This is an a-ok and pretty typical Jewel-Osco. We drop by occasionally if we happen to be nearby and in need of something. The store is typical but the parking lot situation and location are not. By that, I mean this Jewel shares a strip mall parking lot with the Des Plaines DMV, and that place is often crazy busy. So if you come by during DMV hours, don't be surprised to have difficulty finding a parking spot. Just a heads-up for you! read more

I used to shop at this Jew for years. (40+). i stopped about a year ago. They have deteriorated so badly. Now you have to go on the computer and download coupons for sale prices, buy 4-6 same items to get a sale price, stand in line forever with one checker....all around horrible experiences. Store staff are very helpful. Today I went in to buy the large Coffee Mate on sale. None of the large containers were there. I asked Lillian (service desk) if she knew when the item would be restocked. She called the grocery staff and asked them to check the supply or restock delivery schedule. Then she walked with me to the aisle to see if she could substitute another Coffee Mate item. We were still comparing sizes when Linden appeared with enough to restock the large Coffee Mate sale item. Thank you for the smile on a dreary, rainy day. read more

Most Jewel's are outdated and need remodeling. They do have a good stock of items including produce, and including the OSCO items to compete with Walgreens. Did you know they are owned by Albertson's which is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Their Signature brand is very good and covers many different products. Love their app too. Very convenient for us as they are just down the street and they have more locations in nearby towns. read more

This is probably my favorite grocery store in the area, although I do go to it less than Mariano's. The produce prices are better than average and can be spectacular when using the digital deals. The selection of vegan specialty options is pretty good. They have some things that other stores don't have, other stores have some things they don't. It's a mixed bag, but all in all this store is excellent, the staff is friendly and helpful. The other customers are so-so - today I got to stand behind a customer arguing with the cashier that sometimes her digital coupons don't scan even though this time they all did, so who knows what the point of that was? It has been a while since my previous review, and some things have changed, while much has stayed the same. First, I have not seen that snarky manager since shortly after my previous review - either he got promoted (???), moved on of his own accord, or... Also, team members are regularly helpful and friendly. Can't find something? Just ask and they will check, and sometimes even walk to the likely aisle with you! Prices are moderate, but there are some good deals, and their app always offers incentives to try new products or get a deal on your favorites. read more

I wrote a review a while back in reference to the ice cream section. However, I thought I'd give them another try and the same thing is happening the ice cream seems to have melted and placed back in the freezer to form crystals, which is a waste of money. I went in today around 12:30pm and 5 people waiting around by the deli who couldn't be helped. They couldn't be helped because the 2 women working there were scared to ask or talk to the older gentleman in charge of the deli. They were out of the chicken wings they advertise and no one knew if they were making more today. The old man had suck an attitude about having to go into the freezer. He came back out and slammed 2 bags by the fryers and walked off shaking his head. What a horrible and toxic place to have to work and be around people so miserable. If you e been here before, you'll know who I'm talking about. Always so unpleasant. Funny how everyone today just walked away when they witness his attitude problem. At least I know he works the day shift and will only be coming in now in the evenings to not have to even see him. Smaller than the nearby MP Elmhurst Road or Niles Dempster St. locations but in many ways better and often less crowded. . . Stop for hot and de-lish chicken near the deli; solid meat selection in the cases; decent produce department plus typically well-stocked shelves and helpful staff can be found on the floor. Deals and more galore often abound. This is a generally pleasant, go-to for anyone in the area or passing through. Some days the nearby Secretary of State office has many parkers and some shoppers making the area a bit crowded but plan ahead. If you need more than Jewel's offerings, then you can find other grocers and smaller stores nearby. Best of all. . .this is a union shop. Show your support. Shop wisely. Pretty nice Jewel, friendly staff, fast self check out. It's interesting how every Jewel is SO different though. This one, the floral dept is so tiny and they don't carry the nice candles I love getting. Versus the other Jewels I have been to have a huge floral section and many candles. Anyways the wings are still consistent though! So that's a plus. Overall great store OH but this one does have a huge magazine section lol versus the other ones. Kinda funny. But cool. read more

The store on Lee Street is ALWAYS, for years, out of produce items, especially their top items in the ad. They make all kinds of excuses, a lot of times saying they can't get the items from their warehouse. Their most popular one is "Out truck is coming in tonight. we'll have it tomorrow.", which is unbelievable on Wednesdays and Thursdays when he sale just started. I've left numerous cartfuls of groceries there, gone to the Park Ridge store, and found huge displays of the items(s) I was looking for. If you don't want to make multiple trips for an item, avoid this store. read more

I was a believer in Jewel due to its prices and quality. After today's experience at the one in Des Plaines on Lee, I will no longer be going to Jewel. Was picking up some lunch stuff before work today with my girlfriend. Got home, was opening the mayo and thankfully she looked at the expiration date before using it. February 2018!!!! I can see maybe like beginning of May or early June but 4 months ago??? That's crazy to not check what's on your shelves. We could've gotten sick. No longer a customer at Jewel even in an emergency. Decent selection of most staples. Pricing as always depends on the sales but they are reliable and convenient. Deli staff is always friendly and there are a few hot items usually available. There is an Osco attached so you can various sundry items and hey, liquor. There are several self check out lanes. read more

Jewel is consistent in one thing. Poor customer relations/service. Standing in the window of the customer service desk, of course with no one in sight, an associate appears out of the office, looks directly at me and starts to walk away! I said "hey, anyone working here?" Only then does she offer to help. I have had similar experiences at other Jewel stores. Either you're invisible or they think you are stupid. They just don't understand what customer service really means. This store is small and outdated. It should really be closed. read more

Never, never, never does this Jewel have enough cashiers/baggers. When you pay more for your groceries (& you do at Jewel stores), you should get better service - like Trader Joe's. I have no problem with employees. It's not their fault they're understaffed. Other than that, store is clean & has decent selection. read more

OK This review needed an update. Shortly after my initial review I noticed several changes within this store. They changed out the entire deli staff which in it's own would deserve two additional stars. But the problem here has always been a problem. Most everything in this store is too expensive for the quality of meats/produce they offer. And, as of this writing the store is under renovation, some of the parking lot (which was an issue before) is under construction and they have taken away the self check-outs and replaced them with several 12 items or less lines. Which would be fine if they had more than one or two checkers serving them at one time. Still, as in my original review ... I walk in, grab a sale flyer, buy what I need that is on sale ... then I make a bee-line to Shop-N-Save for most everything else. read more

I'll tell ya why (1) Not a great selection (2) too many times I have purchased something to find when I get home it had already expired. I like this Jewel Osco store a lot. It is close to my house and the customer service is great! Besides the produce being pretty expensive which is a company wide problem, I am very pleased with the meat department which has always been fresh and neatly packaged. (ewwwww, no one likes a dripping bloody pack!) I always find great clearance finds in the Osco areas especially after major holidays which is a must-visit area everytime I stop in to shop. read more

I've lived in the area for 1 month and have been to three different Jewel-Osco stores. I haven't liked any of them. I visited this location today to check out the floral department. Selection was 'ok' at best, prices were fair, but the woman working in the floral department didn't even acknowledge me when I walked over. Being the only person shopping the department, I expect at least a little bit of customer service. My suspicions about this employee being unfriendly were right when she was rude to another one of her co-workers. I left purchasing a small bouquet for my MIL's birthday. The first thing I noticed was NO hand baskets!!!!! Usually a bad omen, and for me, almost as big a pet peeve as an 11-item dude, in the 10-item or less line! I was pleasantly surprised. Good selection, good prices, and best of all, since I was visiting and didn't have a Club Card, the nice older checkout lady gave me a generic card discount. Advertises senior hours Tues and Thurs 7AM to 9AM but does not enforce special hours for essential workers and seniors. Very disappointing as not only do I not want to get ill and would have appreciated a retail store taking the effort to assist essential workers and seniors. The freezers are either broken or whoever stocks them allows the ice cream for one to melt then it's placed in the freezer. It always has a taste of crystals. Disgusting. There has been times when you pick up the containers it even feels soft. Stay away from the ice cream. read more

Coming from MN, I don't have much experience with Jewel-Osco; however, the few times I have come they have left me with mixed feelings. They are a lot like a hybrid of Cub Foods and Rainbow (Minnesota branches). They don't have as wide a selection as some of the places that I have been to, but it is big enough to make it worthwhile. I'm pretty sure I will be shopping here when I move, because while it is just average it is better than a lot of other places. There are a lot of good prices, so you can get a lot of food. Good luck having your food bagged. A lot of the grocers don't seem to have a clue. You can put all the milks together, put the cereals together and the canned food together and they will still manage to put your raw chicken in with your produce. They get the extra 3rd star simply because they are the ONLY place that I have found that still carries my hair dye. read more

Shoppers need to be aware that this store uses customers' shopping carts (YES, THE SAME SHOPPING CARTS YOU USE TO PUT YOUR GROCERIES INTO WHEN SHOPPING) to empty trash containers from outside the store. This has been happening for years, I have complained to store management several times and have contacted their corporate offices. The last time I contacted their corporate offices, just about a month ago, I was told by President of Jewel-Osco Doug Cygan's personal secretary that this nauseating, disgusting behavior should not be happening and will not happened again. Yeah, right. Who knows how many times it has happened since then that I was not aware of but tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, I caught yet another employee emptying DRIPPING, STINKING, SMELLY TRASH from an outdoor trash bin into the customers' shopping carts!! This behavior is absolutely disgusting and extremely unhealthy and I will be contacting the FDA as well as local health representatives. read more

This is a health warning I was shopping at this Jewel, I asked for a six piece chicken. The man said eight would be cheaper. I said ok He drops the plastic bag on the floor. Picked it up, fumbles with it, opens it up. Then puts his dirty gloves in side of it. Spreading it open whith the dirty gloves. All over the inside of the bag. I said are you serious!!! You are not going to use that bag that dropped on the door. To put my chicking in, so he gives me this. Shocked look like what just happened here. He does throw the plastic bag away, grabes a new one. ( Both shocked and to my dismay ) With the same gloves that handled the dropped bag. He begins to open that one then uses the tongs. To grab a chicken breast, when I said he'll no that is just wrong! And left as he gives me a both a shocked and puzzled look. Not only is the floor dirty from raw chicken solids and liquids. But from feces, germs, dieses, and dirt from both men's and women's bathrooms! From the parking lot as well, now especially with the coronavirus. Is this nut case serious??? read more

I visit my folks in Des Plaines and on Sunday, Nov. 3rd, I decided to try this location one more time....surely, they can't be rude and short with customers every time, right? Once again, no carts when I walked in. This time, I went to the service desk to politely let them know that there were no carts. The chunky blonde gal at the desk replied "Yeah, that happens a lot"...the service desk is not accurately named. They are a surly bunch. With the new grocery stores opening in Des Plaines, you'd think the Jewel would step up there customer service. Today, again, they only had one regular checkout line open and what looked like a manager was bagging groceries on the 15 or less checkout line with no bagger on the regular checkout line. We ended up helping the clerk bag our groceries to move things along. I'm trying to still give Jewel some of my business but they're making it hard with the great service offered at Mariano's. read more

Why do I shop here? Good question. I suppose because it's close, what the turnaround time the last couple of times I've been there makes me start to rethink the whole process. 2 weeks ago there was only one cashier on a Wednesday night for about 30 customers. Last night the fruit didn't scan and they had to call in the back to get a price check on half the stuff. And the manager has to override everything. None of the cashiers are over 21 which is fine but usually there's no manager around to ring up alcohol. I have a hard time thinking wide Dominick's went out of business and Jewel still around given the recent experiences I've had at this location. read more

I am so mad at Safeway for closing their Chicagoland Dominick's stores. Now my closest store is the Jewel on Lee St. and I HATE it. I have shopped in a great many grocey stores and supermarkets over the last 55+ years and I can say, without hesitation, that this is by far the worst I have ever experienced. If I could have left zero stars I would have. It's too dark, which makes it difficult to check the produce - which always contains some spoilage. The selection on the selves is not very good, and is frequently mis-placed or missing altogether. I could keep on listing things that are wrong with this store, but there just isn't enough room. I can't wait until the new Caputo's opens. read more

I have complained about this Jewel more times than I can count. Via email, surveys on receipts, in person, etc. This store is awful. The only good thing is that most of the employees are nice and patient despite being overworked and understaffed. #1 There is no bathroom on the first floor. Yes. You did not misread that. This is 2015, right? I have had to take my toddler (now I find out there is one on the second floor that has an elevator - slightly better, but really???) down the grungy stock room steps to go to the bathroom. Disgusting and ridiculous. Their employees have to endure this daily. #2 The self-checkout (and customer service desk) is ALWAYS understaffed. You will stand and wait for help and look around and wave your hands while desperately scanning for any employee to show up and help you. I have seen employees RUNNING to get from one customer to another. This store is less than a mile from my house; so, I end up there often, unfortunately - at least for certain items that I cannot get at Aldis or Caputos. At this point, I am hoping this Jewel is replaced by a Marianos. My complaints have made no difference. read more

This bakery was fantastic in more ways than they know. My friend picked up vanilla cupcakes with hot pink icing on them for my birthday. My birthday took place in a huge gay bar so the pink cupcakes were very fitting. We all ate them as they sang Happy Birthday to me and all was well. The cupcakes tasted so good. However to my surprise the next day the food coloring must have done its trick because all of our poop turned pink ( I checked in with all my friends and their duty time). It was awesome! Nothing says Awesome Gay Birthday like the next morning with pink poop, the only thing I wish was that not only was my poop pink but had glitter in it as well! So as I live literally right behind this store I end up shopping here a lot because the location is so convenient. Recently they've made renovations to this store which included removing the self checkouts and instead putting several express lanes. It looks like the service desk has turned into an express lane in addition to this and that person now multitasks Between returns and completing people's purchases. It also looks like there is no register on the Osco side of the store anymore. I understand why the self checkouts were removed and I support that decision. However the problem is customers have lost the convenience of checking out quickly because although express lanes were put in, nobody is actually working them. You can't just eliminate​ 7 extra self checkout lanes and replace that with 1 express lane and have the service desk operator running themselves ragged trying to multitask. That being said I avoid this place on the weekends because you'll be standing in line all day and all night. They have some good sales and the prices are reasonable for the most part except perhaps for produce. But it's just not worth the hassle to checkout. Also the Monopoly games in my opinion, are a really stupid gimmick. They should go back to the free cookware. Everyone was happy with that program and everyone would win because all it took to win was spending money. Stop understaffing and having barely any cashier's and I may consider changing my review. read more
