A lot of reviews mention horror stories in the check out lines. I gave up on those some time ago and use the self-checkout lanes. I don't mind scanning and bagging my purchases. There is rarely any kind of wait to get to the self-checkouts and when there is a wait, it is very short. My other opinions about Jewel match many of the other reviews: (1) their prices are higher relative to other grocery stores, (2) they do have a good produce selection, meat and fish counters. (3) They also have a wide variety of staples. (4) There is usually a mismatch in some pricing shown in the aisles and when you check out. (5) It is very hard to find anyone working at the store who can help you if you need something. So, for selection and fresh product freshness, they score well. I am extremely disappointed with my repeated experiences at the Jewel-Osco on the corner of Roselle Road and Golf Road in HE. The weekly specials are constantly marked on the shelves, but when you get to checkout, the discounts "never seem to apply." It's frustrating and feels misleading. When I've asked staff about the pricing discrepancies, I've been met with dismissive and rude responses instead of helpful customer service. Rather than correcting the issue at the register, I'm told to go stand in line at customer service for a refund. Unfortunately, the representatives there have also been unfriendly and unprofessional, like they are doing you a favor. On top of the poor service, the prices in this store are outrageously high compared to other grocery stores in the area. Between the inaccurate sale pricing, the attitude from employees, and the overall experience, this location has been by far one of the worst grocery stores I've dealt with. THE WORST! I've pretty much had it-- I've reached the breaking point after watching the quality slide ever downward over the course of a few YEARS, so buckle up: The only thing this store-- corporate and this location-- focus on are newer and sneakier ways to overcharge, deceive, and make me buy more than what I want to, all while making me jump through more and more obnoxious hoops. So let's start with the epidemic of "sales" where you only qualify if you buy crazy large quantities instead of the single unit you want. It's a gimmick-- the "normal" prices are so high no one would ever buy a single unit. So really, the "sale" price is the normal price. But because it's a "sale" they change every week, to prevent you from remembering what the normal price actually is. Just stop! There are some items that I have never seen NOT on sale in years. And the amount of products sold that way is ever increasing. It seems like half the store, at this point. Just set an honest sale price and let me buy the quantity I want, for cryin' out loud. Just stop! And some of these sale prices are insane, too. No one will believe me without a photo, but I've seen a "Buy 4 for $5.00" sign on items that are originally priced at... $1.29! WHY!?!? Why are you so obsessed with making me buy large quantities that only save me $0.04?!!? WHY?! Just stop! And then there's the newer version of that, the "digital coupon" where I have to use the stupid app, in the stupid store, to scan a stupid coupon in order to get the better price. Give me a break. No one wants this. No one has time for this. I don't need to be reading fine print on sale signs to figure out the terms and condition. I don't need to be have my grocery shopping experience turned into a bloody video game! Just stop! Another fun thing they do is stocking the higher priced versions of something in the space for lower priced versions of the same thing. Ever wonder how you got suckered into buying a dozen eggs for $10? Because it was sitting in the space for much lower cost eggs. And it wasn't a customer putting something back haphazardly, it's full shelves of this stuff. Just stop! And despite all this epic, Las Vegas casino inspired nonsense designed to trick you, fool you, and part you with your coin, the prices continue to go up and the level of service continues to go down. They often run out of whatever they put on sale, which is incredibly annoying. And probably tied to the fact that they make everyone buy three, four, five things, instead of whatever quantity they want, like some low rent Costco clone. There are never enough checkout lanes open. Ever. Bagging the groceries is too much of an effort. We're increasingly funneled into the self serve lines (which are just not designed for people doing full weekly grocery runs) so we can do their jobs for them, while they're jacking the prices up. And any complaint is met with, "Call corporate." The last defense of the incompetent. I don't wanna call corporate. I don't want to carve out another half hour of my busy week to call someone else who won't take me seriously, either. I want you, store managers, to tell your own bosses how much your customers are fed up with them. read more

I am in line at the Jewel-Osco in Hoffman Estates (today 8-11-25) chatting with the woman in front of me. The cashier rings her up and just leaves her groceries on the counter - no movement just leaves them there. When the woman asks about bagging her food the cashier replies that the bagboys are on break and that they will bag her items when they get back. The woman continues that she needs to take her groceries home - the cashier just ignores her and then reluctantly starts bagging the goods. Uncomfortably the woman says she doesn't like to bag groceries or she would shop at ALDI. I agree with her. The cashier ignores the comment and just puts the bags on the counter so she has to take them herself. Then comes my turn. As I am paying I let her know that I would like my items in paper thinking I would ignore the scene I just saw. She just ignores me and leaves the items on the counter and goes to move to the next person. I don't move so she reluctantly reaches down for a paper bag and very slowly opens it and hands it to me. I take my milk and juice and put them in my cart directly like I usually do (I am in the store about 5 times a week and while I run across a testy cashier once in a while most are quite friendly). When she continues to ignore me I slowly start bagging my food (like the previous customer I don't pay $5.99 for eggs and feel like bagging too) and pretty soon she is at my side making comments like "see how easy it is" - "look at you bagging your own food". I ignored the rude behavior and just walked out. Across the street at Amazon Fresh many of the items I buy are $1.00 to $2.00 less and they bag with a smile. If Jewel-Osco has changed their policy and no longer is going to bag our groceries they should make that clear as we enter the store and we can choose accordingly. read more

UPDATING RE: COVID19 (Sept2020)- They completely removed all floor stickers that encouraged customers to social distance. And the employees are not wearing their masks correctly, their noses are completely exposed. Sigh. Really terrible jewel location. Unfortunately it's convenient for me so I continue to return, but it is never a good experience. They have SO many products on their shelves that are past their expiration date. I always check everything because so often I notice items are already expired. They are always understaffed and seem very disorganized. This store always has what I need and it's a convenient stop, but the customer service here just stresses me out most times. At the deli there were several people in line and two people behind the counter. I was next, but the second woman decided that was the ideal time to cut up some boxes and disappear to the back room. I get it, they have other things to do besides serve customers but why wait until you have a line formed? The young woman who did end up helping me was very kind though and apologized for the wait. Fast forward to my groceries being bagged and the milk thrown so hard into the cart it breaks the top of my dishwashing soap so I have to go back and get another one. Really?! Experiences like these are why I typically go to other places and probably spend more money, because I know I'm likely to have a stress free shopping experience. The best part about this Jewel are the helpful pharmacists who take time to answer questions, even if you're not getting a prescription. I view Jewel as a staple grocery chain, no frills, average prices. I don't expect exceptional quality or especially interesting unique items here, however if you need some basic things, this is the place to go. Everything about the Jewel chain is outdated, it's not visually appealing and they don't have the most interesting selections. The employees are typically helpful and friendly, which is a big plus. This location is pretty indicative of what you will get from any Jewel experience. I remember the last time I went to this store which is exactly a month ago from now. I stopped by to buy few groceries that I have not bought to the grocery store I always go to since it is not available and I was kind of hoping that it is available on this store. Good thing is that it is available in here and I was able to get everything that I needed on my lists. I took that day and the chance to explore the store since I do not usually go here for my groceries. I must say that they have a good selection of products plus the prices are very reasonable including the sales on everything. I was just a bit disappointed before I left the store because the staff in the checkout was really rude. This is a terrible location. First of all my most recent experience: had a party of 12 for a baptism. Ordered 40pc of chicken 48 hours in advance. Went to pick it up they made us wait 30 min!! We had other food delivered already and people at our house! So embarrassing. People at the deli have ALWAYS been rude if you don't like your job get a new one! Also this happened last month : went to pay asked the cashier to split the payment on 2 cards. She ran the whole thing on one card. I was so pissed. I stood around waiting for 30 min for a manager. Finally I said let me load my groceries ill come back. I get inside and they say they need my groceries!! So I unload them all they have to refund it and re ring it . The whole ordeal took 2 hours and I got cash back since it was debit so I had to go to the bank!! I am considering moving just so i Can live near a different jewel ! 3.5 stars While the prices and selection aren't the greatest, this Jewel has everything you need. I've been impressed with how the selection has expanded over the years to be more like grocers across the country. Lately, they've stocked everything from the usual goods to kombucha and protein oatmeal. Wild. Go, Chicago suburbs! Also...can we observe a moment of silence for their cheesecake? Technically it's "cheese danish coffee cake," but my wonderfully foreign mama just called it cheesecake when I was growing up. Jewel-Osco is such a very nice place! Perfect for big families or bunch of friends to shop. Their products are always fresh and new, from fruits, veggies, meats, and up to other products. All of it are always up-to-date and well-maintained. The staff here is very helpful, friendly, and so caring. All of them knows how to treat and assist all of their customers so well. They will accommodate you the whole time you are shopping. And even escort you outside when you are going to leave the store. This place is so big, clean, nice, and so near. It is so easy to find, they are so near to other well-known places around, and also their place is so popular so you can find them easily. They have the nicest and best employees I have ever met. All of them made our experience so much better and memorable. No wonder why lot of people keeps coming and shopping here again and again. Sadly, 1 star! Came here today (been here before too). Picked up some food and essentials. Noticed they had a rack of lamb! Score! Or so I thought. Got home and put everything away. Noticed my freezer smelled like rotten eggs. I only bought some meat: rack of lamb & rack of ribs. Ribs seemed fine when smelled. I don't have the best sense of smell myself, so, I had my wife and daughter smell. Ribs were fine to them and me. Then the rack of lamb. I smelled a faint rotten smell. My wife said, "oh, that's bad". My daughter said "oh yeah that smells like rotten eggs". Package shows it it still well within date (was still closed, never opened by myself. Which means the smell was getting through a "vacuum sealed" bag). It seems the vacuum seal isn't fully sealed; the plastic isn't tight against the lamb in all places. It must have a hole and must have gone bad. Thank god I didn't not notice and cooked it for my family! This item was over $20. I just noticed (same day about 4 hours after shopping). I haven't gone back yet. My wife is a cancer survivor and I had asthma as a kid. During this pandemic we try to stay home. I hope someone from Jewel will contact me and offer me a credit or gift card. I plan to throw these rotten nasty things out. $20 isn't worth me going back to maybe get exposed. Very disappointed. At least we have plenty of other food to last for weeks. read more

Let me start by saying this review was made during the frenzy of corona- I visited this store today and I see the butchers restocking and they have blood all over their aprons, not splatters either but arm length down meaning they're not changing their gloves and wiping it into their apron. Then the cashier said she wasn't provided gloves when I asked why she felt the need to put her entire hand into my produce bag to get the #s off the sticker. If you're from the area it's majority older generations. We know corona is very dangerous around these groups. If a location can employ people walking around not changing their gloves I can assure you their health practices that you DON'T see are not up to par as well. Am I concerned about the corona personally? NO. But as a shopper I am disgusted with these health practices. And in a time where other stores are doing deep cleaning and I see these instances I know I am spending my money at the wrong place. read more

Every time I go to this location I have a problem with their employees. The lack of customer service from this Jewel is bad! The bakery department is the worst. They are either very rude and nasty or completely unknowledgeable. The cashiers have a constant look of dread on their faces while working. I love Jewel...usually visit the one on Barrington and Schaumburg and I will keep on going to that location. This jewel has such a bad atmosphere when walking around. Sweet baby cheesus. It took me approximately 3 minutes to grab everything I needed: bell peppers, a cucumber, Roma tomatoes, and Draino (long story). It then took 30 minutes to leave this hell hole. Naturally, one lane was open and that single lane contained everything pure evil about grocery shopping: the cashier who doesn't know the codes, the bagger who won't just shut it and put your stuff in the bag, and the customer who forgot something and needs to go back. Gotta get those Rachael Ray dishes! 25 minutes later it's my turn and it goes smoothly enough until the Draino is rung up. The price is incorrect, so I ask for a check on it and feel horrible because I've got a line forming behind me and I wanna get going. Of course, the sale price was for something else and whoever stocked the shelf put it in the wrong place. She asks me if I still want it. I tell her I just want to get out. I'm too defeated to fight it. I need this Draino, so I hand over my $30 and mumble profanities when she tells me they don't do the Jewel Card anymore. On my way out I am nearly hit with full force by someone organizing the shopping carts. Go anywhere else - Dominick's (while you still can), Shop & Save Market, Valli Produce or even SuperTarget. There are only about a jagillion places in the greater Chicagoland area where you can get a prescription filled. If you live, work, or visit anywhere near Higgins/Golf and Roselle, you should show your love to this particular Osco Pharmacy. The pharmacist here is the best dude ever. He talks to people, greets them by name and treats them like human beings not just bodies in line that need to be moved. It's not that corporate "hihowareya" either, which you sometimes sense people just do because their managers are around. This guy is genuinely the most helpful pharmacist in the world. He's helped me with a few tough situations involving my insurance and payment for prescriptions, and that's rare, especially in a chain store's pharmacy. It's kind of nice to have someone who isn't just able to help you but seems to genuinely want to, especially when you're feeling sicker than a sack of cooties. The rest of the store is pretty mediocre, but as long as I am in the suburbs, this will be my pharmacy. read more

I've been shopping at this Jewel for many years off and on. I stopped going for a long time due to poor quality meat and produce and so-so service. Today, I shopped there and when I was in the parking lot trying to return my cart, I was snapped at by the person doing the cart pick up. I simply asked her if she wanted my cart, also, and she whined at me in a high pitched voice saying, "NO, I'm only getting the small ones right now!!" And when I said, "Well, I'm sorry. I was just asking", she snapped the same sentence at me again. I get that people are pandemic weary but that includes customers, folks. No reason for that at all. I was trying to be considerate and I'm the CUSTOMER. It's enough to make me think twice about returning any time soon! read more

Honestly this place thrives on location; there is not a lot of competition for grocery in the immediate area...and they are not cheap When compared to others grocery stores it falls flat on stock and diversity of products. But the worst is the service; I had a issue with the inattentive teens who seem to flood the cash registers some time ago so I only use self checkout (which other jewels seem to be getting rid) but the few times I use the deli I get the WORST people to interact with. If possible stay away from the large red headed woman (I can't speak for the rest) behind the counter, I felt forced into giving her my order today while trying to see through the fogged deli case. This Jewel-Osco is tucked in the back of a small shopping center. Every time I shop here, it seems really cramped even though there aren't that many people. Somehow, I wish they could make the aisles wider. It's convenient though and the hours are fairly good for those that work. On many occasions, though, I have seen police cars in the parking lot and have seen a lot of loiterers in the area which does make shopping here a bit more of a nerve racking event. Though, props to the Hoffman Estates Police Department for always being responsive :) read more

Getting my rotisserie chicken on tonight! I gotta admit I do like the flavor of the rotisserie chicken from jewel. I had to dig through a few packs before finding one that was cooked through and browned. I believe I have found a winner...yup, chicken dinner! I only gave this location three stars because it could use a face-lift, makeover, and renovation. It is always understaffed here. Any given day, there are only two registers open. Makes for an annoying wait. I admire that they have young high schoolers working there but I also would encourage management to promote their staff into at least smiling at the shoppers. read more

I like this Jewel. They do a pretty good job day in day out. Out of stocks are rare and the people are above average. The pharmacy in Osco is really top notch - as professional as you will find anywhere. To be perfectly frank, I had no idea what this place even was prior to heading out to it via GPS. All I knew is that this is where I was instructed to go to get an "ipass" for the Illinois Tollway (newbie to Chicago). I was getting sick of having to stop and lay cash on them every 5 seconds, especially when I have to do lots of client visits during the week that puts me all over the city. God the traffic here sucks! But that is a rant for another time. I waited at the customer service section to get my device for a solid 10 min before someone took the time to help me. Though the place was busy as hell at the time and the lady that came over to assist was very cordial and helpful in instructing me how to use the device. Since I was there anyway and the place looked like your typical grocery store from my vantage point, I figured I would grab a cart and pick up some items. This place is a bit of a hybrid between a grocer, pharmacy, dollar store, and florist. It reminded me a great deal of the HyVee grocery stores we have back home. The selection was decent, but not great, especially if you like to cook as much as I do. Prices were also a tad higher than the other grocery store close to my house, Valli Produce, which I prefer. Overall, not bad, but nothing to get too excited about. It is your typical chain grocery store with some other "one stop shop" types of services thrown in for good measure. I really hope I am able to track down a decent farmer's market local to me this coming season. read more

The muffins at this store are A-MAZING!!! Better than any bakery, better than the muffins I have had in L.A., NYC, ATL, at "specialty" bake shops. They come in a pack of 4. The blueberry...they put me into euphoria! But they are all Deee-lishus! Everyone at work goes crazy for them too. I buy them 3 packs or more at a time, if they have them. I make a special stop here early a.m. so I am sure to get them when they have them. And I will admit, that I have eaten an entire 4 pack of blueberry. I do my other grocery shopping here, occasionally. I like the self check out, this way the cashier can't see what a muffin freak I am with those muffins. If you go there, & enjoy a really good muffin, pick up a pack. Blow your mind. Also, their sesame seed bagels are truly amazing...when fresh. Customer service is friendly, though you often have wait for someone to come from the backroom. I sometimes wonder what's back there?! This store is so dirty, it's disgusting. Just look at the front doors and entranceway. Very dirty. 3-4 day old meat on the shelf is the norm. The smell from the butcher area is disgusting. Super convenient location for me and I love that they have shredded chicken. Deli employees usually depends on who you get as far as efficiency and friendliness. But the store in general has changed a lot. Seems disorganized compared to about three years ago. They took out the Osco counter and now the area is cluttered with bins. Also, they should be more attentive to the checkouts and have more available, especially late afternoons when people are heading home from work. read more

Today, I went to this Jewel to purchase their fried chicken special (12 pieces $8.99). Was supposed to include 3 breasts, 3 thighs, 3 legs and 3 wings. Upon arriving home, found that I got 6 wings and no thighs. Very disappointing. I should not have to check the job that the deli clerk is doing. I should be the store's and employee's responsibility to do their job correctly. Getting tired on the poor service at this location. Mariano's service is superior. read more

Unfortunately I hate this Jewel, but it is the closest to my condo. They usually do not have great deals, or an over abundance of fresh produce. It also takes a really long time to get fresh fish, chicken or steak because no one is ever behind the counter. On many occasions I've stood there for 10 to 15 minutes without any help. read more
