Bakery Review! I worked with Marlene at the Bakery to order my wedding cutting cake. She was very patient with us describing our simplistic design. She went through all the flavor/filling options and what the upcharges were for each. She told us when the best time was to come in and order as well as how far in advance we needed to come in to order. Hate the digital coupon idea. Been here couple of times with girlfriend as she likes for some reason but give me Trader Joe's anytime. First thing I said to my spouse as we walked into the store was "remember, this is the store that never gets their prices right". We used to live in this area years ago. We were driving by after an appointment, needed a few things and thought we would stop in. While we were checking out at the self checkout, we noticed right away several of the items were not scanning correctly. (according to the sale price). We gave the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe once we hit the payment button, scanned the barcode on the store sales flyer, the prices may adjust. It did not. How does this even happen? The gentleman who was working the self checkout was extremely busy with all of the customers checking out. He helped us adjust the donut shopcoffee price, focosia bread price and the keebler peanut butter crackers to name a few. Our bill went from $53 to $33. We won't be back. read more

Like everything Kroger's touches, it's gone down the toilet. The latest innovation, which is the straw breaking this camel's back, are the digital coupons, which are an absolute abomination. First, waste my time with one of the poorest, most onerous interfaces to a phone app I've ever seen. Then try to steal my money at the checkout by *never* and I mean *not once ever* honoring the digital coupons. Then waste more of my time when I go make the manager refund my money. Who waits until two days before Thanksgiving to go shopping?! This guy! Despite the fact that it's two days before one of the biggest food days of the year we found everything we were looking for, and at sale prices to boot! We nabbed a delicious ribeye roast (at a great discount!), fresh bread, veggies, apples for our pie, assorted bits n bobs, and of course alcohol! The woman in the meat dept was a gem, helping us pick out a great roast, as well as explaining how I can cut the roast, and making sure I went home with butchers string when I said I didn't have any! Ken, the cashier who assisted us, caught that I hadn't entered in my Mariano's card/phone number, and made sure I went to customer service where a kind woman applied the sale amounts and reimbursed me $47! This is very similar to other Mariano's in the areas which have a great selection of prepared food and bakery items, and awesome options such as cheese and meat boards at super reasonable prices. In particular, I love their better than average choices of baked goods and cakes, which allow me to get competitively priced items for any celebration when I need to. I'm a recent transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area, where you have limited grocery choices - essentially you have Safeway (same parent company as Jewel-Osco), Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's...and that's it. So, it was nice to see the variety of grocery stores available for choosing throughout the Chicagoland. Mariano's quickly became my grocer of choice. A division of Kroger, the first big plus with shopping @ Mariano's is variety. The breadth of product options is truly impressive. Unlike competitors, the options to choose from an array of brands, sizes, and flavors is something you can bank on. For example, there are aisles devoted to international food options, and I was particularly impressed and pleased to see Italian and British groceries. Another example - prior to the Coca-Cola Company killing the brand, Mariano's was one of the few places I could snag Tab Cola - my favorite throwback soft drink (albeit a closet- Tab fan!) What leads me back to Mariano's on a regular basis is their spectacular range of prepared foods - from street taco kits to grilled salmon to turkey meatloaf, there are a ton of tasty, ready to heat dinner options that save a ton of time and allow you to still deliver a decent, nutritious dinner. Another huge plus is Mariano's butcher counter. Need something quick for dinner? Try their delicious pub burgers, house-made sausages, stuffed bell peppers, or tortilla-encrusted boneless chicken breasts - just to name a few. Bakery options are also top-notch including foccacia and delicious pretzel bread. There are a few drawbacks. PRICE: Mariano's (like many other Kroger divisions) is pricier than a lot of other grocery options - definitely higher price tags than Jewel and Aldi for sure. Slightly less expensive than Whole Foods - so to level set, you see a hike in your grocery bill. I do my staples-shopping at Jewel, Walmart, and Aldi, and then head to Mariano's for their butcher counter, prepared foods and specialty items that might not be readily available elsewhere. PRODUCT FRESHNESS: I've gotten duped a couple of times (my fault for not checking) whereby I've purchased an item that has long expired. Mariano's really needs to do a better job at pulling expired products from their shelves and counters. Another pet peeve - If you want cash back, Mariano's charges a fee. For a company that continues to make record profits, this is pretty lame. All in all, a much appreciated, frequently patronized, reliable grocery source. read more

Since Mariano's was purchased by Kroger it's really gone down hill. Was there today. They no longer have seasoning for fish. They no longer have Lipton's ice tea in cans -12pk. They no longer have popcorn salt. And in many of the isles the shelves are empty. I guess I'll have to go back to Jewel Osco where they have these things. Out of all the other Mariano's I've shopped at, I find this location best among the others. First of all I would like to say that the staff here has been phenomenal, very helpful, as well as feeling fond to say hello. Usually I'm all about saving as much as possible, though I don't mind from what they have to offer, as it's usually unique in some way, or just something worth trying! Mariano's has so much to offer, like. Honey... they have around, over 30 types of honey, that's really astounding! Along with a large selection of teas... So many teas to choose from and exotic honey to pair... heaven. Purciutto, as I've realized not many other grocery stores sell at the deli (unless prepackaged). Oh! The breads at the bakery are wonderous! Definitely check out the large selection of Jelly and jams they have in stock! Wine too.... eek, quite a selection and inventory for variety. Oh! Icecream, the gelato is delicious! Especially Lemon, mango, strawberry. If you're someone who enjoys reading, looking and browsing, you'll definitely lose track of time with their products on the shelves, especially with eye catching packages. read more

Considering that this is the newest Mariano's in the area and it has the main offices for all the local stores, I had pretty high expectations and was prepared to give them five stars. Well, that's not happening. I'm used to the employees in the other locations being super friendly, talkative, and knowledgeable (side note: I used to work at another Mariano's location and prided myself on being a pretty good cashier). I didn't get that impression here at all. The first cashier -- when I purchased my so-so lunch to eat there -- didn't really know what she was doing. The second cashier in the checkout lane did not greet us or say anything. The third cashier -- when I bought my kale smoothie -- was really friendly -- yay! However, all of them were really surprised when I asked them if they wanted my Mariano's card and seemed like they were still learning everything. Maybe they didn't have as much time to prepare prior to the opening as the other locations? I don't know. I definitely was disappointed by the lack of excellent customer service here. The aisles here are big, which is great, but the deli/produce/gelato/bakery area seemed cramped. Prices and selection was great (whew!). However, (I know that Mariano's is not a health foods store) I was disappointed with their vegan selection -- not as many vegan cheese, meat, and yogurt options as the other locations would offer. I was really bummed because I was counting on coming here for those since Whole Foods and Trader Joes are quite a drive from my new apartment. Oh, the kiddie carts! Ugh!! Unlike other stores, the ones at this store are painted reds and blues (and maybe other colors) so they almost seem to encourage children to race them around the store -- because that is exactly what we encountered. On top of that, the people here seemed slower (employees and customers) and indecisive about what the wanted to order (the deli bar was crazy)! My husband and I were anxious to leave. The only thing about this location that thrilled me? THE JUICE/SMOOTHIE BAR! I had an amazing Kale smoothie and ended up buying all the ingredients for it so I could make it at home. I will probably find myself more at a smoothie place for these kinds of drinks than here, but it's good to know they have the option. We are sticking with the Palatine location for our Mariano's trips. I might come back here in a couple months to see if things have [hopefully] improved. read more

It's a damn shame that chose to take my first ever trip to Mariano's on the second day of a store opening. Stupid me!! The police directing traffic on Golf due to the droves of people that are being magnetically pulled to mariano's should have caused me to continue driving past but I really wanted to try out this new place. I have hated Dominick's for many many years, so I support anyone that takes over their buildings! :) I picked up some cherries and a loaf of bread. We needed a quick bite before a meeting the other night and I have heard that their prepared food section was quite a hot spot. I had a chicken finger, a piece of italian sausage and some mac & cheese. The chicken was a nice white tender and the sausage was a little overcooked. The mac & cheese was pretty yummy. My fiance had some italian sausage and really enjoyed it. For $5.99/lb, it wasn't a bad deal. The salad bar is $4.99/lb. and has a nice variety of choices, guacamole, fruit, salad, etc. We never made it passed the produce and prepared foods section for a number of reasons....we were in a hurry, the large crowd wasn't very appealing for either of us. You can't really have a cart in that area, the people are everywhere. I sampled the pizza and it was fantastic. They offer cooked (just need to heat at home) meals...entree + two sides for $6 or $10. These foods looked great and I think we'll have to try that out sometime. The $10 options are only the tilapia and beef entrees, everything else is $6 per meal. Quite a great deal, if you ask me. I look foward to returning soon to try walking through the whole store and see everything they have to offer. ps. Costs: depends on what you're buying..the costs of the products might be a little bit on the higher end.. or a little more expensive than Dominicks or Jewel, but similiar to Whole Foods?... they have a values card which you accrue points on and get something from it.. like if you spend a certain amount.. you get the something discounted or free.. **both times I came here.. it was packed.. but probably because it's new.. and I went during peak grocery shopping hours... Store Review: A combination of fruit market with whole foods. Mariano is a bustling grocery store that required police to direct traffic during the opening. There is a combination of normal grocery items mixed with the organic type of food you would find at whole foods. Overall the prices are reasonable on sale items and not so much on regular price things. There is a ice cream stand as soon as you walk in and hot food items as well. I've been to many of the Mariano's in Chicagoland. While it's become my new go to grocer in the last 6 months (bye bye jewel!!!) , this location has become my favorite. The staff is really on point. Joe and Melissa at the Seafood and Meat Counter are awesome. Both remember me by my orders and Melissa has twice offered to make something that I wouldn't even ask at other Mariano's. Noi, the short lady that does Guacamole on the weekends and samples during the week is amazing. Today she did the kindest thing for me that was so ridiculously above and beyond! She whipped up a lb of guacamole just for me with a smile even though I insisted she didn't. Seriously this lady is the kindest person and is one of the few left that understand what customer service is about. Good crew here Mariano's. Good crew. When I'm in the area, the primary reasons that I visit this Mariano's are the Friday Download freebies and hazelnut gelato ice cream if available. The Vero Coffee & Gelato cafe here is smaller with only two counter-top tables nearby, and the selections are much smaller than the West Loop location. However, I like that it's right by the entrance. What's nice about this location is that the Friday Download freebies are all in one section next to the flowers section so that you don't have to wander all over the place, They also usually keep an adequate amount of freebies in stock, at least for dry foods. If it was ice cream, there's a 50/50 chance that it'll be out of stock. People love their ice cream I suppose, including my parents. Checking out usually isn't an issue. I'm glad they have enough registers open where you don't see long lines like some of the Chicago locations. If you purchase alcohol, they will need a supervisor to come over to verify your date of birth and enter information into the system. Remember to grab your food samples along the way that are placed throughout the store (usually during the day)! read more

The new pharmacy manager, Charles, is destroying the phenomenal customer service reputation Stephani and Kunjal built. The only reason I gave them 3 stars is because Stephani is still there and because of the addition of Matt. They are both amazing, helpful employees. Charles couldn't be bothered to call and tell me he didn't have the medication that was called in or perhaps he just didn't fill it because I was told there is always a supply of the medication I needed and getting 2 pills shouldn't have been an issue. When I came to pick up, I was supposed to get 5 prescriptions. Charles was rude, short tempered, never looked at me or made eye contact and seemed to be bothered by my presence. He never told me he didn't have the one prescription filled just handed me the other 4. When I checked the bag and questioned where the other one was he continued to snap at me and seem bothered that I was questioning where the 5th medication was. He preceded to tell me it needed to be ordered and he would request it tomorrow. I asked if he would have it tomorrow since he knew today it couldn't be filled there. He asked me, "do you want me to order it or not?" Previously if a medication isn't in stock the pharmacist calls to let me know so that I have the choice to transfer the script if I need it right away. That never happened. I checked with the pharmacist today who told me that medication has been in stock. I was there a half hour before the pharmacy closed, it appears now he just didn't want to be bothered to fill it. I was very disappointed to hear that he is the new pharmacy manager in this location. I switched to this pharmacy because of their amazing customer service and Charles definitely doesn't uphold that level of care nor seem to care to. It's disappointing to have to interact with an employee who has no business interacting with customers. It is BY FAR the worst customer service I have ever experienced there. read more

Mariano's is our favorite grocery store. It has a great selection with decent prices, not as pricey as Whole Foods, but still has unique items. They have really good meat at the butcher, they will also grill your meat while you wait if you request it. I really like the huge pre-cooked meal area, which is perfect for lunch. We were going to check out on February 18 around 5:00pm and it was pretty busy. My issue was they had 3 register lanes open, all in succession. People were lined up 4-5 deep in all 3 lines right next to each other. When I went to speak to a manager (her name was Jessie) to see if it would be more safe to have every other register open and that the current situation was very unsafe, she told me "well you can shop somewhere else if you don't want to be here". Boy YOU CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE now that KROGER has full control if Mariannos it is getting more Shop N Savish everyday , and dirtier and grittier as well. The check out conveyor belts are filthy sticky disgusting, and who likes shoping in ridiculously dimmer lights. The hot food islands are not refreshed enough. And worst of all long ever so slow Walmart style checkout lanes. For true UPSCALE shopping I go to Heinen's in Barrington their hot food salad bars are the bomb.
