My family has been going to Byron the Jeweler for well over a decade. My mom first told me about him, and I've since spent thousands of dollars there myself. We've always liked supporting a small, family run business, and his daughter has consistently been kind and helpful. Unfortunately, our recent experience was really disappointing. My mom tried to order a bracelet for my one year old, but she was never told there would be a $40 shipping fee. The first bracelet arrived damaged, and the replacement wasn't the quality she expected, so she decided not to buy it. Byron became upset and started yelling at her, which left her shocked and hurt, especially after being such a loyal customer for so many years. A few months later, I went back to see if things had smoothed over, but Byron stood by his reaction and never offered any apology. After so many years of loyalty, it's sad to feel so dismissed. A few years ago, I brought my ring into the Jewelry Tech to have two diamonds removed (out of three diamonds) and made into earrings. I was quoted under $200.00. By the time I left, I paid $365.00. This was after hearing their woes about how expensive it was to feed their large family and the high cost of living....I knew this was a bad sign. Recently, I was reevaluating my taxes for the last several years and saw the $365.00 removed from my account (which was a burn in itself), but several days later they also removed another $100.00 from my account. This review is long overdue as I was traumatized by this horrendous experience for months and unable to convey my feelings in words. This jeweler is a racist. Plain and simple. He looked at me, a brown woman, and flat out refused to do business with me and asked me to leave his store. As a jewelry dealer for over 20 years, I was looking for a new repair person. I was referred to Jewelry Tech by his son. I like to call ahead to explain what I'm looking for and to get a feel for a business. After having a conversation with the owner, Byron, for over 1/2 hour, laughing, agreeing that we were so much alike, we made a date to meet at his store to look at the repair jobs. I am still devastated by the events that occurred while in his store. He was on the phone and behind the counter and his wife asked if I required help. I explained that I had talked to Byron on the phone, and I would prefer to wait until he was free. After several minutes, he came to the front, took one look at me and said, "I don't think I can help you." Incredulity flooded my face and response and I asked what the problem was. He stated, I've contacted one of my Mexican jewellers and I think it would be a better fit. When I referred to our amicable and friendly conversation, we had just days ago, he stated, I'm sorry, I just don't think this is going to work." Byron then asked me to leave his shop. I was visible y shaken by the experience. Never have I ver been treated so cruelly or disrespected in this manner. Storytime, folks. Unbeknownst to me, my boyfriend bought me a beautiful engagement ring from Byron four days before we left for a 3.5 week SCUBA dive trip. The day we left for the trip, we stopped by the Whistlestop Antique shop (the awesome store that's connected to Jewelry Tech) to get some Christmas/bday gifts for a couple of our friends. We found some perfect gifts for them, and then I wandered into Jewelry Tech, not realizing it was a different business or even knowing what they offered. The jewelry was gorgeous--there were pieces from all different eras and styles, but there was one ring that caught my eye. I'm not in the habit of trying on random jewelry, but it was my birthstone and so gorgeous that this time, I did. I told them how beautiful it was, and gave it back. My boyfriend was there, but he didn't let anything slip. Fast forward 10 days: my honey and I are diving at this beautiful reef called Mala Pier in Lahaina, and my boyfriend starts writing something on the slate. When he started writing I went back to looking at corals and fish, trying to spot a turtle, and then he taps me on the arm and points to the slate, and hands me the ring. He proposed to me on Christmas Day, 30 feet under the water, and even managed to squeeze a pun into the proposal. I was thrilled, and of course said yes! There was only one problem: it wasn't the right ring. I don't wear yellow gold, and the design wasn't quite my style. Over the next few days my fiancée and I talked about it, and he told me how he had bought the ring he proposed with a few days before we went shopping at the Whistle Stop together, and that he would have exchanged the ring that he bought for the one that I loved if he had the chance. But we were driving down to the city to drop off gifts and fly out for our trip that very afternoon. There was no way for him to get rid of me long enough to make the swap, so he decided to propose with the ring that he had, and figure out the rest later. He called Byron and asked if the ring I loved was still there, and somehow it still was! We flew in on a red-eye last night and stopped by Jewelry Tech this afternoon and made the swap. Byron and his family were so gracious and helpful. He sized my PERFECT ring on the spot, cracking jokes and checking out our photos from the trip--the kind of customer relationship building that you almost never see these days. Seriously, I couldn't recommend this place more highly. Byron and his family were amazing, the ring is perfect, and they made the whole thing so easy and fun. If you're looking for an engagement ring or another unique/vintage piece, look no further. Businesses like this one are hard to find, and it's up to us to keep them going. read more

Read all the great reviews today. I needed to find a set of wedding rings because my fiance was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer and we planned on getting married in the beginning of this year. But it all took a turn for the worse in the middle of December. Shes at home now and still wants to get married even though she has a very short time left. We are getting married on Monday by a friend of mine whose a pastor. So I checked out this shop and the owners were very professional and friendly and I was able to find to rings at a great price and he resized them right away and I was able to walk out with them today. Because I believe in top-notch customer service. Theres a difference between walking into a liquor store and a pawn shop (right?) When you work at at jewelry shop where people bring in very old, sentimental pieces to potentially sell, the attitude should be empathetic and (obviously) kind. Listen I'm in my twenties, this shouldn't be rocket science. I bypassed this attitude the first time that I sold with these folks because I got to immediately speak with Byron. This time I did not, just the help at the front. Really don't care to put people on blast, but this lady is rude as hell. Zero compassion, hardly a smile... really a pretentious vibe. I've been looking around for a place to replace some batteries for my watches they're not cheap so Ive been looking around and make sure they're reliable and I'm glad I took that walk around DT and I found this place. We looked at each piece, they explained to me very patiently what I had and what it was worth. I ended up selling them most of what I had for what I feel was a very fair price. I also got some great information and advice that will allow me to try and sell a couple of pieces on my own; if that doesn't work out I will happily go back to Jewelry Tech and sell them there. I love this store and it's unique selection of vintage jewelry both fine gold and sterling. Prices are very good for the bay area. I appreciate how knowledgeable they are. They greet you and offer to help but are not pushy in any way. I wish more SF stores retained the charm that this store has. It's disappointing to read a truly thoughtless review here. The woman who says she has trust issues with jewelry stores, cites the misdeeds of an unrelated business, and then proclaims these guys untrustworthy is clearly projecting.
