Kathiew Phnom Penh Pho Noodle (16)
    Victor G.

Jiam's opened recently last month, replacing Pho Huyen & Banh Mi. Infrastructure & seating similar. Slight change of decorations. Greeted courteously after entering, assigned a table, ordered. Food came in 8ish minutes. Offerings(Vietnamese, Mien, Laotian, Cambodian): appetizers, papaya salad, banh mi, pho, Bbq specialties, rice/vermicelli plates, specialty noodle soup.. Bites: Kathiew Phnom Penh Pho Noodle (16) -side toppings of red/white cabbage, jalepeno slices, basil, bean sprouts: all added to hot soup. -savory broth, not too hot. Had subtle flavors from contents within: beef/fish balls, pho noodles, ground pork, sliced beef, herbs & spices. -lots of noods made this filling. Deliz. -has similar taste to Vietnamese pho. Sach moun bouk (Cambodian stuffed wings) 17 -lst time eating stuffed wings of any kind. -had fresh side salad of iceberg lettuce, sliced cucumbers, tomato slice. Fresh! -big bowl of rice saved for later. -2 medium sized wings literally stuffed with shredded chicken & pork, wood mushrooms & peanuts. Thin layer of original chicken meat. Rest was stuffing. *didn't add any seasoning nor sauces. Ate it naturally. though food wasn't loaded with flava, subtle taste was nice. Cambodian food isn't spicy like its neighbors. Fried egg roll: had meat filling, crispy, crunchy. Subtle flavors. 4.5 stars good service. Quality: fresh. quantity: reasonable May is Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage month.

S3 Khao Soi - Lao Style

Great new SE Asian noodle spot on international. The banh mi and iced coffee/tea are also delicious. The serving size on the noodle bowls are pretty large. I love that they are open early for breakfast. A nice addition to Oakland for soup noodles. Worth checking out.

Good food. Prompt service. Reasonable prices. Khao Soi was pretty legit and came with an ample variety of protein. Only complaint is the noodles were a tad overcooked. Place was completely empty around 1 on a weekday, besides a few delivery drivers picking up to go orders as I ate. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area.

I love that our local grocer opened this restaurant. I enjoy their noodles, desserts and their grand opening menu. Their papaya salad is good, I didn't know that the spiciness can be adjusted. And ordered it by default medium spicy and it was too much for me. Even so, it was still worth eating all of it. The service is great, and the interior is clean. I'm happy to have a spot to eat with friends. A local gem.

Heard about the grand opening via IG, checked out the menu and couldn't resist giving them a shot solely the Lao style Khao Soi, which contains fermented bean paste - that is something you never find in Thai and near non-existent Lao restaurants. Avoided going during the grand opening day to save myself from impatience and annoyance from flaring up. It was kind of weird that some menus had items that were taped out with "sold out" and some menus without it so we didn't know what was truly sold out, if any. Ordered the Khao Soi and BBQ Combo with vermicelli (less pork & beef). The Khao Soi was the star of the meal! Flavorful, true to taste, and noodles were soft and silky. The vermicelli is traditional to what you'll find in Viet restaurants. Lychee Limeade was definitely on the sweeter side and my "lid" wasn't properly sealed so I couldn't poke the straw in without making a mess. Lao iced tea was strong, but almost resembles Viet coffee without the condensed milk sweetness. Owner and her daughter Diana were so sweet and friendly. Will definitely come back to try other items on the menu, but I know the Lao Khao Soi will for sure continue to take the #1 spot for its authentic uniqueness you can't really find elsewhere... at least not in the bay. Picked up Spicy Chef Mike's Bomb Sauce. Initial dip taste has a really nice kick to the mouth. Can't wait to eat it!

Lao Kasoy, flavorful love that it has a little bit of chopped up pork fat/skin in the ground meat. Very worth $16

The food here is OK. We had the bbh and BBQ shrimp with rice. The fish sauce wasn't very tasty. We had a drink and it was just sugar water. The service was very friendly and the ambiance is nice. I just wish the food was better.

The pho was solid, with a clear, deeply flavored broth and noodles that were slightly al dente, which I personally enjoyed. That said, for $20, it didn't feel especially memorable. The crispy spring rolls were fine, but I prefer the ones I make at home, so I'd probably skip them next time. I was especially excited to try the Vietnamese beef carpaccio, and the presentation was beautiful. The beef was fresh, evenly sliced, and topped with baby greens, onions, crispy fried onions, and edible flowers. Unfortunately, the sauce leaned far too citrusy for my taste and overpowered the flavors I wanted to come through, such as fish sauce, vinegar, and sugar. I also think a little more fried onion and garlic would have made the dish more flavorful and satisfying. Overall, we had a decent meal with both highlights and misses. They also offer dishes like bánh khọt and bò lúc lắc, which may be worth trying on a future visit.

We ordered the tofu bahn mi, tofu, veggies and mushroom vermicelli and Vietnamese pancake with shrimp. They were all amazing. The tofu in the banh mi was stirred fried w/ mushrooms not fried like how I'm used to. So it was a little different but very tasty. My fiancé had the vermicelli bowl which he said was pretty good with all the stirred fried tofu, veggies and mushrooms. What was surprising the most was the Vietnamese pancake. It was so good that I would come back for just this appetizer. It has a crunchy texture on the outside, but the inside was so creamy. Wrap that with a lettuce and dip in the fish sauce and wow! My mouth was happy. Service here is top notch! The server was super attentive and he knew just when we needed more napkins and more water. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon for those pancake!

This is a fast place, table sharing, no room having place. If you're looking for a western style dining, it can become overwhelming. But, just embrace the speed and efficiency of this restaurant. Because once you are seated, you're served immediately to get you on the way. With service, don't expect tier 1 experience, but you'll get your water/tea. Savor it, don't assume they'll come back while you're still eating. Just saying! There's a few things on the menu that are must have.. 1. Chow Jew Ho Fun with soup on the side - the obvious that everyone orders. I like to get soup on the side, and then put about two tablespoons soup back into my noodle and add all the sauces! Then occasionally, sip the soup to wash everything down. 2. Beef Stew Ho Fun - My boyfriend's must have. Flavorful, soft meat, delicious. 3. Fish Cakes - Personally, I don't care for fish cakes, but my boyfriend and his family order it all the time, so of course I'll still eat it. It's still good. I'm just a person who feels I can buy it from the banh mi shops and it taste the same. Lol I don't eat anything else here. This is one of those restaurants where you go and eat what they're known for, not wander off too far away from the menu because the other stuff is just legit filler items. The only problem I have is, it's so expensive now for a small bowl. So it makes me not want to come back, but at the same time, flavors are really good. You just would think with the amount of customers, the business thriving, you could at least keep the portion size the same as before..

We were informed there may be a Pri-fixe menu beforehand but that was not available that day either. We had no issues with that, but it would be preferable if they made sure they are able to offer the experiences that are available on the website. We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. I've tried quite a lot of bún chả, and I could detect the marginal increase in quality here compared to other places. The phở-nominal cocktails and fish sauce ice cream were also delectable. I loved the savory take on each, and since they're rarer finds, I was glad that Tay Ho had them on the menu. Also notable is that even though we came early, there were already a substantial amount of diners and the place was busy, which is a good sign this place delivers the goods. They're only open Friday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., so I finally made the trip out on a Friday and arrived around 9:30 a.m. It was already fairly busy, and it only got more packed while I waited for my order so I would strongly recommend getting there before 9 a.m. or phoning your order in ahead of time. I ordered 4 sandwiches total, and it took somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes for everything to be ready, but both the #2 Special Combo Ham and the #13 Meatball and Egg were absolutely fantastic and well worth the wait. The #2 is how I benchmark a good banh mi, and this place really delivered. The pate was out of this world, the sandwich was piled high with delicious cold cuts, loaded with perfectly pickled veggies and jalapeños, and stuffed into a roll that had the perfect balance of a crisp exterior and pillowy interior. The #13 seemed to be a popular choice as well and for good reason. It had all the same great attributes as the #2, but with the pate and cold cuts replaced by a sweet and savory crumbled meatball paired with a perfectly soft boiled egg. It was every bit as satisfying and delicious and had such a different flavor profile to the #2, which I really appreciated. It is not in the best neighborhood and the hours are painfully tight, especially if you want to avoid a long wait, but the end product is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. And at $6 to $7 per sandwich, the value is still a good value, even if it is a far cry from the $4-6 range that it seemed to hover in for a long time.
