Honestly, I don't know how I ended up here but it easy delish and the people were very nice. It's a small place and we made a reservation about an hour before showing up. I am a pretty routine kind of girl and I got the Kung Pao Shrimp and it was spicy! I don't believe in too spicy so I appreciated it. Every bite was delish. The portion size was large and could probably feed another me. I have no idea what my boyfriend ordered but he ordered an entire fish and it came with a glove. Their crab rangons might be the best that I've had in the city. I can't wait to check this place out again. read more

I adore places like this. The whole place was very neat and well decorated while maintaining the classic Chinese restaurant appeal. The dish choices were all so authentic and include anything you could possibly want. You know a menu is legit when they even have stinky tofu! I was overjoyed to have found this place. Our dish felt like eating at a Chinese household on a special occasion. I loved that there was lots of garlic and veggies included within our braised chicken dish. Ultra kind staff too. Our waiter seemed very attentive to us and really wanted to take care of the people there. If you call yourself a fan of chinese food please come here, as it's often overshadowed by the flashier restaurants in the area!! read more

Jian's has some really good take out! We got lo mein, general Tso's, egg rolls, and crab rangoons. Everything was very nice! Rather than sweet and sour sauce, the crab rangoons came with a Chick-fil-a type sauce. Not my first choice but interesting for sure! The portions were really good too. It's a bit of a maze to find the place, but once you get there it's worth it! read more

I don't often write reviews but after eating at Jian's Kitchen, I felt like I needed to write this not only because of the food, but as the restaurant resides in the basement on a bustling street where plenty of other great restaurant are around, I would like to bring more exposure to this cute little spot. I highly recommend the spare rib with salted eggs, one of my favorite dishes and this place does it very authentically. The three tones basil chicken was very flavorful, you would love it if you were a fan of basil. My only complaint was that the portion size was smaller compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Overall, if you are looking to try some authentic Chinese cuisine while in the area, do give this place a try! read more

This was a perfectly reasonable Chinese restaurant, but it was short of being really great. That might be a function of the items I ordered, but I also ordered a fairly wide spread of items off both the standard and authentic Chinese menus. My focus was on vegetarian items, so the experience outside that constraint might be different. To get into the details, the tomato tofu egg drop soup was fine, but I typically expect it to have more depth of flavor. The mapo tofu (vegetarian version) had all the right components, but lacked the spicy and numbing punch that it could have. Some of the vegetable mains were pretty good but could have been better. That all having been said, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The space was low-key, but nice. (After you descend down the stairs and enter the actual restaurant.) It felt like a business I would like to support, but that might mean I need to try some different items off the menu. read more

The new ownership here has replaced Northeastern Kitchen and everything so far is really exceptional. James speaks very good English and the communication/translation between the owner and the customer works well. They are open late enough for me to swing by after work to grab some real authentic Chinese. The liver/kidney and intestines is amazing and perfect spice, the beef stomach mala is amazing, and most of all I like the different steamed fish choices they offer. This is really unheard anywhere else in PGH. I am a fan again! Having the original cook from Northeastern still there makes the deal work! Happy New Year!! read more

The food is good - authentically Chinese. The taste brought instant memories back to our days living in China, so yeah, we missed those tastes of sour, spicy and hot. The 锅包肉is really good, like those in Harbin... the hot plate spicy fish (sorry I forgot it's name on the menu) has only one word - hot! The staff is attentive and service with a smile. It's not a "PF Chang" setup but down a flight of stairs is a quaint experience to locate a restaurant. I admit I might have ordered wrong, but I thought the food here was just fine, nothing special. They do have some dishes that aren't served elsewhere, which might be of interest if you know the dishes well. Shrimp toast: this is basically pieces of shrimp formed into a batter and deep fried. Nice and crispy and has a good shrimp flavor, sort of like a shrimp ball but richer. Northeast Special glass noodles. I wasn't expecting this to be cold, or I might have ordered something else on a hot night. It's quite pungent (in a good way) but the tastes are just sort of mixed up. The vegetables are crispy and the tofu is nice, the noodles are very gooey if that's what one likes. It seemed like it could have been a good dish but something was off. Strange overall. Stir-fried mixed vegetable. This is a misnomer, it's really just one pile of greens, without the promised variety, and it's not spicy even though it's labeled as spicy. Sort of thing you could get anywhere. With so many other places in the area I doubt I'd go again, but if you have specific northeast Chinese dishes in mind that they sell here, it's worth a shot. read more

Yo, they got chinese food in the basement???? Probably my favorite spot in Squirrel Hill because it's hilarious to me to walk down there, be a bit confused descending the stairs, check out all the nail parlor signs, and then stumble into such and amazing quality place. The vibes are cozy, food is delectable, and the people running the place are so so nice :) Feels like a hidden gem even though it's right in the strip of squirrel hill. You know this place is authentic when you walk in and your party (all Chinese-American) are not given the complimentary wonton appetizers. Our waitress even accommodates our request in putting in less oil/salt in our stir fry vegetables and prepared our whole fish as we requested. We were able to eat a Taiwanese dish that is rare to find in the U.S - sour pork soup. Overall, this place has many hidden dishes and you can't go wrong with any of their dishes! read more

This was truly one of the worst meals we ever tried to eat. We ordered the Ramen with chicken ~ the chicken was sliced very thin, and was tough, and the meal was beyond bland. We ordered veggie gyozas, and they sent meat ones ~ I couldn't even try those, but my mate said they were mushy and tasted only if soy sauce. We ordered two salads, only received one and it was drenched in sweet dressing, and I ordered the yellow curry rice noodles with tofu, extra, extra spicy. The tofu was so overcooked I literally couldn't chew it without having to wash it down to swallow. The vermicelli rice noodles were overcooked and in tiny pieces all clumped together. It took a long time to get the order through Door Dash, so the service was slow. I don't know about the ambiance, and will never find out. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Top five most inedible meals EVER. DON'T DO IT!!! read more

This place is phenomenal. I got the twice cooked pork belly cooked traditional style. First off the quality is top notch. They gave me a generous amount of pork belly and it was cooked to perfection. Nice and spicy! I went at an off time and was the only patron. The staff and chef were very friendly and seemed kind of shocked that i wanted a spicy traditional dish, but were more than happy to accommodate once they realized i knew what i was ordering. It was pretty funny tbh. They give you quite a lot of food for the price , around $15, and it is crazy good. This was the best version of this dish I've had in Pittsburgh that i can find. Ordered Dali Mali chicken, not knowing what to expect, and it was the best fried chicken I've ever had (comes with a spicy, slightly sweet sauce on the side, flavored (I think) with kafir lime.)
