Ordered this via DoorDash for their lunch special. First, this is "mall" Chinese food which is perfect for those that like Chinese food but not authentic. It's not bad for mall food but if you want the real deal, this isn't it. Good lunch portions, love that you can get soup - 3 different kinds to try, an egg roll is in the soup option and you can pick between white rice, brown or fried. Ugh. I ate here when I first moved to Pittsburgh years ago and I found the food to be mediocre. For a place with the word "dumpling" in their name, the menu was shockingly devoid of dumplings. Its been a long time and I was craving some basic Chinese food, so I thought I'd order some takeout. It was terrible. The wonton soup was too salty, the shrimp dumplings tasted like chum and I'm not sure what ginger chicken is, but this dish did not taste of ginger and was mostly carrots and green beans. No-fuss takeout with love put into the packaging. The sushi was fresh and the lunch prices made everything really accessible. The packaging had thick cardboard between some items to ensure that nothing is squished or overturned. Lots of vegan and vegetarian roll options to choose from. It has been a long time since I've order Chinese food. Tonight, I scanned through a list Chinese places with cheap food and settled on the New Dumpling and Sushi House. I didn't get their sushi, but tried the chicken fried dumplings and egg roll. The dumplings are an awesome portion for the price. You get 6 for $6.95 if you order directly, and they are quite heavy! Their casing/shell is very thick, which may not be appealing to everyone. I personally prefer a thinner casing but this does make the dumplings more filling. However, they don't skimp on the chicken filling either. And, that filling is delicious! I could honestly just eat the filling without the case. Recommend this dish. 4/5 The egg roll was not my favorite. It is very large and cheap, but is quite heavy on the cabbage flavor. I would have liked more other vegetables. However, it was fried well. 2.5/5 I wish their menu described how many sauces are served with the dumplings. I thought they only served soy sauce, but they also give you a special dumpling sauce, mustard, and duck sauce. My favorite out of all is the duck sauce. It's sweet and they give you about 3 pouches. You get 1 pouch of mustard, which is too acidic and not my favorite. Their dumpling sauce seems to be homemade, and it's a good balance of salty and sweet. You also get 3 packets or so of soy sauce. No need to spend an extra 50 cents on sauce orders! And of course, they give you fortune cookies (a whole 3 for my order). All in all, their dumplings are definitely pretty great. The portion is fantastic for the price, and they are filling (probably enough for a meal if you're not too hungry). Egg roll is meh. They give you loads of sauce! I recommend this place if you want cheap Chinese food or cheap dumplings, but it's not the best in the area. read more

Worst food we've ever had. We were traveling and staying at a hotel nearby and decided to try this place. Total regrets

I had a not-so-good experience. I have been a regular customer at this restaurant for the past four years. Every time, I order vegetarian or vegan food. This week, I ordered tofu and noodles. Instead of tofu, there was chicken. my kids mixed the, before realizing that it was chicken so for us, the meals were ruined. The store would only reimburse one of the meals, despite their mess up and the fact that I had to drive back all the way from Bellevue to get reimbursed if I wanted to. I really can't believe for one order this company would lose my business, but here it is. I would suggest not out of this place if they do something wrong. read more

With so many different Chinese restaurants in the area to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which to go to. New Dumpling provides a good range of different kinds to choose from, some of which I have never tried before! I've listed my opinions about a few below but we ordered quite a few and I can't remember them all (sorry!): Imperial dumpling - the skin was on the thicker side and provided a doughy tasty foundation for the sauce. The sauce was incredibly thick and tasted very nutty, I'd have to guess a very strong savory-sweet peanut kind of flavor. I think the sauce definitely lifted this dish up, but at the same time made it feel very heavy. I was always trying to find that right balance. Shrimp dumplings - skins were also on the thicker side. As a result it feels a bit doughy as I chew, and I think the shrimp filling can have more seasoning. It tasted slightly on the blander side. Overall, I think it's worth trying the different selections of dishes and dumplings that New Dumpling offers as there were some I've never had, but I felt that the balance of flavors weren't quite right for me, and I was in a state of adding flavor with their delicious sauces but risking feeling weighed down by their richness. Perhaps it's the more Northern style of dumplings with thicker skins that I'm not as acquainted or just how rich their sauces were. Updating my review because over the past year we have started to order takeout from hear more often. It always comes really quick! I almost always order the chicken and vegetables and an egg roll. Their egg rolls are really good. The last 2 times I have ordered sushi. OMG so good. Yesterday's order was the cucumber and eel roll as well as the spicy shrimp tempura. A plus!!!! I have been eating at New Dumpling & Sushi House for at least 15 years. I noticed a decline in the food during COVID but understood under the circumstance. I continued to order even after they continued with take-out only. The last two times I ordered dinner for my family, I got food poisoning. Both times I had General Tsaos shrimp and I was the only one who had that The first time I didn't call and complain. This last time, I felt I needed to call so they were aware. I called the next day and was told unless I went to hospital and could prove it was their fault, there was nothing they would do. Very disappointed in their response. read more

I always pass by this place and I finally got to try it. * Food: From the title of the restaurant, of course we had to try their dumplings and sushi. We tried their steamed dumplings, Szechuan Dumpling in Hot Sesame Sauce, Scallion Pancake with Beef, and my boyfriend got a plate of sushi (I don't remember what he ordered). The steamed dumplings and scallion pancakes was definitely one of the best I've had in Pittsburgh. The dumplings had thick dough and a good portion of meat inside. The beef was cooked just right with the pancakes. The Szechuan dumplings were okay, I felt that the paste they put on it was too sweet for what I wanted. * Cost vs. Worth: The whole menu was pretty inexpensive. The steamed dumplings were $5.50 for 6 dumplings and they were a good size. The scallion pancakes were only $7.95. Both of us were full by the end! They have been able to accommodate gluten free options for nearly anything on the menu, and when we used to live in their delivery radius we would order from there pretty frequently and enjoyed the food. That said, the delivery person once knocked so aggressively that our upstairs neighbors thought that there was an emergency, so that's something to be cognizant of if you're working from home/have a sleeping baby or a barking dog. It was weird because we had mentioned calling us due to the "front door" of the house opening up to a shared stairwell instead of our apartment, and usually calling was not an issue. read more

The sushi was pretty underwhelming and expensive for what you got, chicken was okay, dumplings were spectacular, it wasn't the most delicious food I've ever had but it def wasn't bad. We were in a sushi mood, so we opted for two special rolls and a hand roll, in addition to edamame. All were incredibly delicious, and tasted like high quality fish. The server was super nice and very attentive, and made sure to ask if we preferred a straw, silverware or chopsticks, water or something else. The prices also seemed reasonable! The food is always delicious, that is not the reason I am writing this review. I never do this but i feel as if its necessary because its going to hurt their business. This is now the second time we have had an issue with the man who delivered our food. (Older Caucasian male). When i went to our lobby to collect the food I did not see him, I decided to wait outside because i thought maybe he hadn't arrived yet. After about 5 minutes we called the number back to see if maybe he was at a different entrance. He told my coworker that "he had been here the whole time and saw me just standing there on my phone". So clearly he saw me waiting there and just didnt come up to me to see if i was the person waiting for him. He walked outside and went back to his car and looked at me. I then realized maybe this is the man from new dumpling house. We walk towards each other and he rudly goes "i've been inside the whole time waiting for you". I apoligize that we mustve missed eachother and that I walked outside because i did not see him inside. I did not get an apology or response back. Instead, I got a rude comment about the tip i gave him and how it was "not enough" for what the price of the order was. I wanted to take the cash back because clearly, he did not appreciate what was given to him (which i did not even HAVE to tip him after all that) to bring the one bag of food to us. You really need to reconsider having this man deliver for you because its giving your company a bad name. I now will be ordering through doordash instead of directly with the company because i do not want to deal with this delivery person ever again. read more

We have ordered from them a few times before and everything has always been acceptable this time however 2 of the 3 orders were done incorrectly. When I called to speak to them I was twice referred to my ticket which of course I can't read because I do not read Chinese. They made it very clear that they did not really care and intended to do nothing about it, So now our food gets chucked and we still have to go somewhere to get something to eat... First time for this restaurant. No sushi for me, so I picked around for new food. The tempura veg did not keep the crispy texture during delivery, but they were very good anyway. Sauté string beans also very good. The rice noodles were great- I loved all the meat and veggies. Also got a duck dish. The sweet peppers complimented the duck perfectly. My experience at New Dumpling and Sushi House makes writing this review challenging. My party of two showed up around 9PM Friday night and we're told to choose a seat. Our server quickly took our drink orders and brought us sake and ice water. After scanning the menu, we decided to try the sushi sampler for two. When our miso soup was brought out, we immediately noticed that the broth was much darker than miso soup usually is. I tried a few spoonfuls but immediately regretted it because it turns out that we were being served the dregs of the day's miso soup which were essentially overcooked seaweed, mushy tofu and about 8000% of our daily sodium intake. Our waiter brought out the salad next, which was also a complete miss. The carrot ginger dressing and iceberg lettuce salad is hard to mess up, but New Dumpling and Sushi House somehow made this inedible as well. After two bites, the puddle at the bottom of my bowl put me off. It seems as though the greens weren't drained after rinsing and the dressing wasn't mixed again before going over our salads. When our server returned, we explained the issues we were having with our soup and salad. The server was apologetic and thanked us for our feedback, but at this point, my dining partner was ready to leave and get other food. Morbid curiosity won out, however, and we stayed for our sushi entree. Somehow, after presenting the worst salad and miso soup we'd ever seen, New Dumpling and Sushi House presented is with a decent plate of sushi. The sashimi was quite delicious, and my dining partner contends that it may be some of the best tuna and surf clam he's experienced in Pittsburgh. The house special roll was okay but had a lot of mayo-based sauce. The bottom line: I can't recommend New Dumpling and Sushi House at this point because there is such inconsistency in quality between dishes. If servers get soup and salads for diners, they need to receive remedial training on the basics. read more

Terrific spot! Wasn't in the mood to cook dinner the other day, so my son and I took off in search of a good place for Chinese food - he was in the mood for it. Drove into Squirrel Hill, and we stopped here, as we had never been there before. Glad we did! The service started a bit slow, but it was pretty busy (Sunday early evening). We ordered some sushi, and then Beef Lo Mein and some Shrimp Fried Rice to follow. The presentation was nice, but exceeded by the taste! Really, really good! The sushi was fresh and well made. The noodles and fried rice well exceeded the normal expectation for these old standards for Chinese fare. Very well done! Our server did get caught up and did a nice job of checking on us and taking care of our requests...so overall she did well. The food will bring us back, when I plan to get more daring with the menu. That's what my wife and I were lamenting to each other after our first and only visit to the New Dumpling House. With a craving for dim sum, my family and I set out for Squirrel Hill to check out the special weekend menu at New Dumpling House. Boy, were we disappointed. We had very high hopes with a special dim sum menu only offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. With items of names we recognize like siu mai, fried bean curd roll (with shrimp even!), red bean buns and on and on. Service was a bit odd. The place for a Saturday lunch service wasn't all that busy. There were 2 servers for the restaurant with only about 3 or 4 tables taken up. We could not understand why it took so long for our waiter to greet us, get us a dim sum menu and then for the food to arrive. There were crispy noodles with sweet and sour sauce and hot mustard already on the table when we arrived. Totally a throw back to the 70s and 80s for me going to the Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood. The crispy noodles that were free with our meal was probably the 2nd best thing on our table according to my wife - I totally agree. When the crispy noodles were gone, the food arrived. And again, it was a huge disappointment all around. Here's how it all went down: * siu mai - microscopic portions of 4 dumplings, tasted just a little bit off which is not good considering it's pork and shrimp. * steamed BBQ pork bun - the wrapper just looked plastic - my wife tells me the filling was good. * steamed red bean bun - the filling was OK, wrapper was a problem * sichuan dumplings in hot sesame sauce - the dumpling filling was good, the wrapper had the consistency of mucus and the "hot sesame sauce" was basically creamy peanut butter. * crispy bean curd roll - the shrimp was a surprise, but this was by far the only decent thing we ordered. It wasn't great enough to have us come back, but at least something was decent. Though we were lured in with the promise of dim sum with a special menu and all, we left New Dumpling House $20 lighter. The price was right but we won't be returning. To hear my friend tell it, this used to be his after school stomping grounds when he was at Alderdice. I was excited to take a trip down memory lane because I hold his opinion in high regard. The only problem with this is that my friend graduated high school in the 90s, and this place doesn't look like it's been remodeled (and in some places, thoroughly cleaned) since the 80s. We walked in and were greeted by a guy in jeans, a t-shirt, and a windbreaker who asked us if we wanted to sit down. Confused by the guy who didn't seem to be in any sort of uniform and didn't look at all like he worked in a Chinese restaurant, I cautiously said yes and he grabbed two menus and told us to choose anywhere. Once sat, I visited the bathrooms that were another trip down memory lane. They were mostly clean, although it didn't look like it had been scrubbed in awhile. I washed my hands and moved on. The waitress bought over tea in a dirty teapot so I did not partake of it. She was friendly and the only server on the floor, but her timing took entirely too long. At one point she came back to our table smelling like cigarettes. The food was good, save for the szechuan dumplings. They were glorified gyoza in chili oil/soy sauce. They don't taste of anything, and I wasn't a fan of the presentation. The steamed shrimp dumplings were excellent, smoky, and everything I want in dumplings. My friend and I split a chirasa platter and chow fun noodles. Both are delicious, though the noodles were a tad too greasy. I've come to expect that from Chinese places, so it wasn't that big of a deal. The fish tasted good but some of it was very very cold, almost as if it juuuuust got done being thawed out. Odd. Another lunch paid for by my work! Score! This time it was the Dumpling House. I've mentioned in several reviews how I'm not much a fan of Chinese food, but I still eat it anyways. I always look for something tame rather than going outside of my comfort zone when it comes to Chinese. I got the Chicken and Peanut Platter. Their lunch special consisted of the entree, rice, soup or a spring roll and a fortune cookie. Everything was really good. For somebody who isn't crazy for Chinese, it was a good dish. The sauce wasn't overwhelming and the rice was cooked just right. I wasn't a big fan of the spring roll, but that's just my taste buds. The reason I'm giving this four stars is for the value.
