Jimmers Backcountry BBQ is on the main highway as you come into Montrose from the north. The building is pretty non-descript and I have driven past it wondering if they were even in business. However, the last time we saw an open sign so turned around and went back. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The choices for barbecue in western Colorado are mainly chain restaurants like Rib City and Famous Daves. I would rate Jimmers as a definite cut above over these chains. We ordered the dinner for two which gave us a chance to try the smoked turkey, pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, and a half slab of pork ribs. Most of the time smoked turkey tends to be dry, but Jimmers was pleasantly moist. The brisket and pulled pork were also tender and moist. The pork ribs had a nice seasoning rub on them and I guess if you had to complain about something, the part of the rack on the end was tougher but the rest of the ribs were not. Fries are fresh cut and portion was ample. Baked beans were unremarkable but can easily be doctored up with barbecue sauce. Jimmers has four sauces on the table. Original sauce is the sweetest. Hickory sauce is still sweet with a touch more tanginess. Chipotle sauce has a little more zing but the chipotle flavor is not real strong. Hot sauce is the spiciest but it is not tongue searing hot. As one review mentioned, there isn't a huge difference in flavor but that's not all bad since all of the sauces were tasty. Service was fine. The drinks come in large glasses (24 oz?) so refills are not needed frequently but our waitress did come around and give us refills and check up on us. It wasn't very busy so our food came out pretty quickly. One thing of note is that the men's restroom is tiny and definitely not wheelchair accessible. The women's restroom is apparently larger though. Having been disappointed by mediocre barbecue in western Colorado, I came into Jimmers with admittedly low expectations. I was in town for a 2 week conference recently. The host provided lunches and one week we were fortunate enough to have lunch catered by Jimmers. EVERYONE loved the food. This place tasted as good as it smells! We ordered the burnt end meal with pork, onion rings, and jalapeño bottle caps, the beef brisket sandwich with fried pickles and the loaded fries with brisket. Went to Jimmers with family (8 of us total) and had reservations set and ready to go. The place is quite small but we were all able to be seated comfortably and close. They had $1 tacos, of which there were 4 different varieties. They were out of tortillas for the tacos, but one of the workers went to look for some while we ordered. Honestly this place was a hot mess. We called in advance to reserve, we got sat not long after coming in which was not the issue at all. We are not even from here and had high hopes for this place after looking online. We were greeting right away by a server, got most of our drinks one was missing and we asking for it again, never got it. So we moved along and ordered our food, after waiting for over an hour the server came back and said " oh we ran out of 2 of the things that were ordered" so we had to choose something else to eat. After waiting for longer, our food finally showed up. My food was cold the bun was rock hard, the fish someone else ordered also cold, the person who ordered the burger was never asked how he wanted it and it was so over cooked he couldn't eat it the bun on this also rock hard. Everyone around here is not professional at all, no manners dressed like they just got out of bed , people coming going in and out of the kitchen had sweat dripping so much it was dripping all over the floor. Best bbq I've had! If you stop in for lunch, make sure to sit at the bar with Autumn! You will get nothing but the best service, great entertainment, and a 5 star experience. I had the baked potato with pulled pork, potato salad on the side and it was pure deliciousness. Their ribs and pork tenderloin are also mouth watering- the pork was so tender it just melted. Paired with the bbq sauce you can't go wrong. Jimmers has a great atmosphere, you can be in and out for a quick lunch or have a nice dinner. Put in a takeout order, to be ready in 15 min. Hadn't even started when I arrived 20 minutes later-- thus had to wait 20 more minutes. An hour wait for the "feast for two." Although the ribs were good, everything else was dry and the pulled pork had a funky taste. read more

We went in for a nice evening out. It was not busy at all. They sat us at a table after the first two were dirty. For the next 20 minutes we sat there and every employee walked past us and not once did we get spoken to by anyone. It was horrible. We got up to leave and all they did was stare at us and no questions were asked. Waste of time to even try this place. A bunch of young kids with no leadership and no drive to give service a thought. Traveling through Montrose and stopped here for a quick bit and a beer. Their wings were excellent, smoked then giving them a crispness before serving. Great flavors! I went on Monday night and it was all you can eat rib night. What a deal, and not disappointed. Flavor was good and jalapeño bottle caps were yummy. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the service was great. My hubby has the Mac and cheese with his meal and ended up sharing it with the grandson. It was the favorite side. My brother and I were on our way back to Cortez after visiting the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for the first time since 1968 when we were children. It was lunch time and we were driving down Highway 50 into Montrose and saw Jimmers. We decided to stop there to see what they had. We each had pulled pork and brisket with sides. I agreed with my brother when he said it was the best brisket he had ever had. The pulled pork was also outstanding. The service was quick, friendly and attentive. Been there twice in the last three weeks. Sandwiches (pork and brisket) the first time were really good. Shared a Feast for 2 last night. While it was missing the cornbread muffins, the rest of it was good. Pork and turkey were moist and very good. I was very surprised at how moist and good the turkey was. Brisket was a little dry, ribs were well cooked but not smokey enough for me. Beans, coleslaw and fries were really good as well. I'm visiting from Minnesota and I can't wait to come back! Mom and I met some friends for lunch. We asked for a quiet part of the restaurant, so we could hear. They were so accommodating and put us in an area that wasn't being seated. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. We started with a plate of fried pickles. DE-LI-CIOUS! We also wanted to taste the kale coleslaw before ordering and we all loved it. (Coleslaw with a bite to it.) Then, we each ordered something different. All of us enjoyed every bite. Good portions. And tender! I had the burnt ends sandwich, which had the special coleslaw. (Other meals had regular slaw, which was also delicious.) The only thing I wasn't thrilled with were the baked beans. It was Mom's birthday, so she was treated to a mouth-watering bread pudding for dessert. The BBQ Pork Sandwich is great and so are the sauces. However, $8.00 for just a sandwich....not much bang for your buck.

I have to be honest, The service was mediocre at best, a little more personality and forgot to bring a dinner salad. Had to ask for it. she was friendly and did check back a few times. Needs more experience. There were small children running around in the kitchen, I'm guessing there's and that was a turn off. The food, St. Louis ribs were re-heated just warm not hot. my fries were cold not fresh out of the fryer. coleslaw tasted like it should but was limp not crisp. Brisket sandwich was dry and the side salad was lacking a bit an the to-go tub of dressing should have gone with a to go order a couple of days ago. By the time we got home we were both running for the bathroom. The food did not taste bad but could have been much better for the price. I won't be going back there again. Not happy with the food at all. The service was great which is why i gave it 2 stars. I ordered mac and cheese. It was super blan, tasteless has a grainy texture. I left the whole thing. I also ordered loaded french fries with pulled pork . It was good. Although The pork had no flavor whatsoever. Our order was supposed to bring bread aand she didnt bring it I guess they didnt have. I have to say I'm very disappointed in the Fatboy tacos. I am a huge fan of Serious Texas down in Durango and when I found a restaurant here that had similar tacos I was so excited. When they came out I was more than sad about what was on my plate. I gave this review two stars because the flavor was there, and it tasted good. However, when I pay $6 for a taco I expect to have more than what came out. We are talking the size of a Tacobell soft taco. If you decide to choose this for dinner make sure you order two or three, that is if you can swallow the bill. read more
