Another chain I do not understand the hype. My college daughter knows the menu by heart and said the JJ in Iowa City is as fast as the commercials claim, super fast. We waited maybe five minutes. I thought it was reasonable for four subs. I got a 16" Turkey Tom with hot peppers. I had to laugh when I got it. It is gigantic in terms of length. It is the girth that was lacking... shaved deli style turkey, thin lettuce, a row of tomatoes, so few peppers I could not taste them, and way too much mayo. Doughy bread good. Very low nutrition value. The sandwich was two stars. Also got jalapeño chips, good. Triple chocolate cookie, all 410 calories worth it. My kids will be back. I might. There was no reason to ding the place for service, cleanliness etc. staff very nice.

Had such an attitude in the drive thru. Made me feel bad for even ordering. They were probably mad that they had to stop their smoke break.

Chef Pedro took our order (bonus points) and we had a lovely conversation about New Orleans. The menu here has a lot of New Orleans food intertwined. Based on where Pedro previously worked in New Orleans, he has an outstanding culinary background. I was going to order the Muffaletta, which can be served hot or cold, but they were out. When I heard why, I was impressed. In New Orleans, the gold standard of bread is Leidenheimer. Minnesota doesn't have the same bread (Trung Nam Bakery is the closest substitute). Pedro uses Leidenheimer for his Muffalettas. Pedro also makes his own olive salad. I am looking forward to trying a Muffaletta. My husband ordered the Zambon Dip and really enjoyed it. I had the Herb Brooks Focaccia. It was great. Big portions. What is really funny is I knew the North Stars as I worked at the Met Center. Fun memorabilia too. On street parking and some tables outside. What we used to call a neighborhood joint. Stop in and say hi to Pedro. Now I just wish he would make Gumbo with some okra and filé.

I wasn't super hungry so I decided to get a bowl of wild rice soup. The sandwiches looked like the thing to get so maybe another visit when I'm more hungry. The soup was good. I ate it on the sidewalk patio. Not a lot of cars passing by so it was nice. There is so much North Star memorabilia in this super small space. I love that a 9-in tv was playing a video of caddy shack. I feel like I stepped back in time. Oh yeah, and Norm Sucks.

I immediately started to worry. Unfortunately my worries have slowly " come true" ...and with an extremely upset heart, Crossroads has changed. Scott and Stu had dedication and sheer love of cooking and baking with the BEST of ingredients and exquisite rare perfect use of spices. Their flavors in everything they touched were some of the VERY BEST I have experienced nationally and in my home state of NY where my father taught Biochemistry in the Bronx at Einstein Med School (1955-1980) and where my intense passion for Delicatessen cuisine originated. Coming almost daily to Crossroads truly made my day! I adored EVERYTHING they created. Even shipped a large lemon coconut cake to mom's beloved 90 year old boss at Scarsdale Medical Center 8 years ago! Today: Their rye bread with caraway seeds was identical to Grossinger's. Now almost zero flavor. The broasted chicken if served hot fresh out of the cooker is still excellent. Some of the original spices gone. The lemon coconut cake has zero real lemon flavor just deep yellow coloring, Their pastrami and corned beef also lost 1/3 to 1/2 of their original flavor plus the size of the sandwiches 1/3-1/2 the original size. The new main dishes are almost tasteless. Their original recipes for matzo ball soup, etc are still good - - vary 8-10 rating. They no longer use as much/ perhaps any butter in their coffee cake " breads" which used to be a 10. Many cookies and tiny pastries in the same display case are still good. Compared to many other restaurants today they are now just " an ok". Gone are the days when Crossroads Deli was " TRULY SPECTACULAR "......

We ordered the charcuterie board, which looked great at first glance until you realize it's an (extremely) salted pretzel, though that was the best part of it- along with (packaged) thin slices of cheese cut in half, canned black olives, pepperochinis, regular deli meat (ham and salami), bitter slivered almonds you'd find in the "sundae toppings" section at the grocery store, and maybe 3 cherry tomatoes sliced in half. Not to mention a handful of plain spring mix and shredded carrots, I see the vision but none of it went well together, and cost $18- for something I could have made for $3 TOPS at home. We ordered a margarita pizza, $17 for 10 inches, which was disappointing as the pizza looked like the best part of the restaurant. A bit soggy and not as distinct as what you'd expect from a margarita. Who knows, maybe the specialty pizzas could have been better. Overall, we had a friendly waiter- I love the ambiance, but the quality of ingredients are WELL below the price and extremely disappointing, even coming in on an empty stomach. Though I believe there is a lot of potential for this restaurant.

Being 5 minutes from our destination we decided to give it a try And boy are we glad we did! The sammiches weee absolutely outstanding. We had three turkey sammiches and one ham, and everyone chose to modify their toppings slightly (note/ if you desire tomatoes, those need to be added as they oddly aren't on included in the smorgasbord ‍) I opted for everything - perhaps a bit anxious about how well all the flavours would mesh (mayo, mustard, horseradish, oil and vinegar along with various toppings). But you know something / it worked really really well. We also chose the potato salad as a side and it was also quite tasty. Lighter, northerly mayo's. While the sammiches weee being constructed we perused the offering in the attached grocery.
