I am beyond ecstatic with the work I had done by Jimmy. I went in knowing I wanted a tattoo by Jimmy (he had tattooed several of my friends and I had my Uncle go to him when he was in town). I knew that my tattoo would be a chrysanthemum, but nothing more than that. My tattoo took 3 appointments, but I appreciated that it was broken down this way. The first appointment I had was to consult with Jimmy about what I wanted. I explained that my tattoo was a memorial for my mom who had passed away. It was to be a chrysanthemum because it was our shared birth flower and a favorite of my moms. Jimmy asked about colors and I mentioned I wanted to encorporate green because it was mom's favorite color. He showed me several images of chrysanthemums and explained their significance in Japanese art and tattoo culture. Knowing how well the flower matched my reasons for getting it, I was confident I had chosen the perfect artist for my piece. My second appointment was for the outline. I appreciated that Jimmy took the time to explain the process to me and made sure I knew what was going on as he worked on my. He checked in to be sure I was comfortable (as comfortable as you can be getting a tattoo). I left with a beautiful outline in a relatively short amount of time. My last appointment was for color, shading and completion. Jimmy showed me the colors he had chosen based on our initial consultation and again talked me through the process. My husband received a tattoo from Jimmy last night. The tattoo itself is all the way awesome, and will help tie the islands to him for the rest of his life. Extreme artistry and integrity went into Jimmy's work. It was very cool watching an artist so deeply in his element, inspired and activated. My husband was so lucky to be in his chair. His tattoo is EXCEPTIONAL. I was born and raised in Hawaii, so was my dad. I know what Aloha spirit is, and I also know that it seems to be more and more spare especially on Oahu, which is unfortunate. I got my first tattoo about 5-6 years ago & swore I'd never get another one, that was enough for me. But someone said that tattoos are like potato chips, you can never have just one...and whoever that person was, was a very wise person because within the last few months I started to get that "I need a little more ink" itch. I did my research, looking for someone with a light hand, a master with fine line tattooing, black & grey art & good with organic portraiture since I wanted a photo-realistic dandelion with blowing seeds. In all my research I kept coming back to Jimmy Mack's work. He's an amazingly talented artist, in many media, not just tattooing. So I made my appointment, put down my deposit & came in for my art. Jimmy was the utmost in professionalism & artistry. He had various photos of what I wanted & then free-handed the artwork onto my skin to make sure it flowed with the curvature of my rib cage and breast. When I told him I wanted a bird, all he wanted to know was what kind and he sketched a sparrow straight onto my skin. I'm always deeply impressed at pure talent like that. No stencil, nothing stuck onto my skin, everything drawn by hand so it would fit the curve of my body perfectly. I'm still amazed. The tattooing itself went super smoothly. Jimmy has SUCH a light hand that I hardly bled at all. The only place it REALLY hurt & I wish I'd signed up for an epidural was when he went on the flesh on my "underboob". That hurt like a mother. Other than that, little pinches & scratches. I did most of the talking, mainly to distract myself. I noticed that if I asked him something he'd raise the gun off my skin to answer. I liked that. He didn't want to compromise the integrity of the tattoo by yammering on. I eventually shut up & just tried to look at all the great artwork around (he did it all, btw). Im actually shocked from all the positive reviews because this is the first tattoo shop I had to give a negative review for. Maybe I got the wrong tattoo artist. Walked right in and was able to get serviced right away. In hindsight I guess I should be worried when a place isn't busy and there are no customers there because it might indicate that you shouldn't go there either. Anyhow.. My husband and I had just gotten married on the beach and wanted to get matching tattoos of our wedding date on our inner wrist. They're numbers on a wrist. It's cheap, simple, and how hard could it be? Boy was I wrong. I've been to several tattoo shops before and have quite a few tattoos so I know how the process goes and what to expect. James was really nice and talkative and the process was easy but the tattoo ended up horrible. I shouldve seen the signs but he was supposed to be a professional tattoo artist so I trusted him. First we chose the font and told him what date we wanted tattooed on our wrist. He freehanded the design on the paper and said, "Something like this?" which was literally just the date on a sheet of notebook paper. He didn't trace the font from the book or use tattoo paper which is what other shops have done. I thought he was just practicing or showing us an example of what it might look like but his freehand example ended up being what he used to transfer to the actual tattoo. Maybe for custom designs that might be ok to freehand but not for font tattoos because the font was uneven, some numbers were bigger than others and some lines weren't filled out completely. Initially, I could tell he laid his "stencil" down crooked because it was really obvious so he had to remove an redo a few times. It was upside down on my wrist so I couldn't really notice the other items until I looked at it after it was done and it was too late. As a professional tattoo artist, he should have been able to see these things and correct them instead of leaving me with a permanent mistake. read more

On vacation with my friend and decided to get a Simple "Aloha" tattoo to take home. Both having a lot of tattoos, we went in thinking this was going to be a piece of cake and super easy haha. I got 2 small tattoos done here and at first I was extremely happy with them. About 3 weeks later I noticed the tattoo on my wrist started to fade a lot and parts were completely gone of ink. I went back in to talk to Jimmy and he basically blamed me for not taking care of my tattoo. When in reality I did everything he said to do. I have 3 other tattoos as well so this isn't my first round in the game. He said that the younger generations gets charged too cheap for tattoos and they don't take care of them and that it needed to be done. He charged me 80$ for 2 very small tattoos. For the tattoo to be fixed he wanted me to pay again and said that the tattoo didn't look like any of his other work. At first loved the work and probably would have went back but after those comments he made never again. read more

After having a great experience at JMT in Nov 2015, I took my wife and daughter while we were visiting the island in Nov 2016. We had spoken to Jimmy and his wife several times and he understood there were 3 customers coming in and he told me he "reserved " the whole day for us. My daughter had some vague ideas but was looking for his help finalizing a design . My wife discussed her ideas with him and they agreed on a style/ design and got it going. Mid way thru the 8 hour process we noticed that he and his wife seemed to be engaging in verbal skirmishes over several things and Jimmy's attitude visibly changed. By the time he finished my wife's tattoo at about 9pm , he was acting very irritable and we decided we were not going to invest anymore time or $ in getting ink because the vibe was really bad and we had to catch a flight at noon the next day. I guess everyone has bad days, I get that, but when you know you have 3 paying customers in your waiting room , a professional just needs to deal with it or cut the losses and say "sorry but I can't take the other customers" No one wants to listen to the guy putting ink in your skin bitch and engage in trivial arguments with his sig other. Bottom line: JMT does do great work , as noted in my review on 8/22/16 for work done 11/15 but I guess you gotta catch him on a "good" day perhaps? read more

Jimmy is in my opinion one of the greatest artist there is. Not only that but a great person to work with. Always friendly and willing to help. I came in with a portrait of my grandfather holding me when I was a baby and wanted to get that tatted on me and. He offered so many opinions and was there every step to make the tattoo look amazing. He is a kind hearted person and super friendly too be around. The tattoo turned out absolutely perfect and I'm super pleased with it. I wouldn't have picked any other artist to do it. His art work is good and his prices are fair. However, I went to get a tattoo from him and at first everything was cool. Untill we got two sessions in. In the next sessions over three to four hours he stopped moving as fast with his tattooing. Of course I want an artist to take their time. All I got done was a half sleeve and I didn't even get it finished because it took him three months just to get a little over half way done. I had already paid him $1600. He told me it would only cost $1500. Then he said we could use my deposit as the money to finish my work. Then when I tried to get it finished it was as if my work didn't matter and he just couldn't find the time to fit me In when I only had a month left on the island.
