Wow'd me and my family once again! For apps, we ordered the Brussel sprouts, grilled octopus, arancini, and the truffle gnocchi. All of these were delicious, but the grilled octopus won that round. Entrees that were ordered were the salmone, the vitello alla valdostana, capesante, the trota, and lastly the funghi. PLATEs were wiped clean. This place is so chic and such a vibe. My friend and I came here before going to the zoo. What a cozy atmosphere. The service was great and the food hit the spot. Each time I come here, I try something different. The spaghetti with meatball did not disappoint. Highly recommend getting the focaccia bread. It's almost like a dessert. Incredible. Stunning. Modern. I could go on and on and on about our first experience at Plate, but, suffice it to say, we were absolutely blown away. Taking advantage of KC Restaurant Week and the lunch menu, everything was top-notch. The appetizers were perhaps the highlight on this visit, but those meatballs are phenomenal. Perfectly prepared and melt-in-your-mouth texture. The house sauce? Look, I'm picky about Italian places and their red sauces. Too much sugar and sweetness? Not my thing...that's what really stood out to me at Plate - a nice, normal and savory red sauce that could have come from my own kitchen. Our server was attentive on a slow Thursday afternoon, and took great care of us. The restaurant itself sits in a sort of non-descript office-looking building right on the SE corner of 63rd and Holmes - directly across the street from BKS Artisan Ales. There is a two-level parking structure on the east side of the building, though I believe at least part of that is for residents of nearby living accommodations. Everything looked sleek and modern, and definitely is going for a classier vibe. We love to try new things during Restaurant Week, and this will now be in our rotation of date night dinner places! Came in Friday the 4th around 1pm for a solo vibe at the bar. Ordered the soup, grilled cheese and Caesar salad. All solid, no complaints. The cocktail was cute too, bright and refreshing, did what it needed to do. Now the service... when I walked in there was nobody at the host stand and the bartender wasn't behind the bar either. Sat down and waited. When he did show up, his "how can I help you" was giving meh... like sir... I'm at the bar, food and drink, my good barkeep! not exactly the warm come on in and stay awhile energy I expect when I'm spending money on lunch. He brought a menu and warmed up by the end but that first vibe stuck. I'd love to tell you his name but he didn't share. Coulda been an off day. I had no idea there were two Plates in the city and every July I want lots of pasta it's a thing I have and do so we went to plate after football practice and the one in Brookside was close to our location. Keep in mind the Focaccia read is also high in the list of things I love about Plate. So we were seated in no time because there was no lunch crowd. And Kenan was the most attentive Waiter I've had in a long time and our conversation was great and wam and welcoming. We enjoyed the nice cool air conditioning and were amazed that they had Wimbledon on the TV above the Bar so I was able to check the score for IGA and Bencic, congratulations to the winner no spoilers here. We ordered our normal Shirley Temples our summer favorite drink which Kenan kept coming lol. The Truffle Butter Bread, Caesar Salad with Salmon and surprise instead of Pasta my son wanted a pizza so we had the red sauce and basil pizza. What a yummy meal! Met up with some girlfriends for a lil happy hour the other evening and had the best time. First of all, being able to sit outside in mid-November is a huge win! Plate has a nice little patio that was perfect for the occasion. Service was spectacular. Our server had great suggestions for us and was, in general, a great time. We ordered primarily off the happy hour menu. I was a big fan of the arancini amatriciana (mouthwatering) and the burger. I know a burger sounds boring but this one had fontina cheese, prosciutto, and aioli and was anything but boring! We also enjoyed the bruschetta (pera was a bit better than the tomato). I'm thrilled that Plate is doing well and continuing to be a staple in the Brookside area! I've been a couple of times since they moved to the new space, but very recently I went for a full fledged dinner and it was a nice experience! I was bummed that happy hour was only included in the bar area, as we wanted to have both a nice dinner and a bit of a deal, but alas we persevered. The story of my meal was TRUFFLE EVERYTHING. One of my all-time favorite flavors and they had it on their menu in abundance. We got the bread with truffle butter to start and it had great chunks of truffle that I was thrilled about. Then I ordered the truffle gnocchi which is technically on the appetizer menu but I knew I wanted dessert so it was perfect. It was nice and creamy and flavorful. To finish we got the s'mores dessert with the graham cracker on the side due to having a gluten-free friend in attendance. So good! loved the salt inclusion. When it comes to the service, our waiter was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the menu and the gluten-free options! The manager spoke with us which was kind and even took a photo for us after. We went for an early thanksgiving supper last night. We had many items and all tried each others' and the food was divine! We started with the truffle garlic bread (truffle butter was delish!) and it had chili flakes that just made it extra amazing somehow. We each had a different dish and everything was SO good. We also shared a few desserts, probably my favorite part of the meal! I didn't get a pic of my MIL spaghetti and meatballs (they were so kind to accommodate with something not on the menu) or my espresso martini (superb!) The service was great, our server was very knowledgeable and friendly, but I wish they hadn't sent some staff home early, as the staff had a hard time keeping up to the demands. But that cannot be changed. The parking is great, street and garage. The inside was beautiful and clean and the bar area is really neat. My last visit to Plate, I raved about the Carbonara. Unfortunately, this visit was very much so a disappointment in comparison. Never have I ever had such an heavily-greased, over-salted carbonara. This is a fun and modern restaurant in south KC! Reminds me of Union on the Hill--under an apartment complex, but an elevated dining experience. I will be honest, the salads and main dish did not impress me. I think the triangle croutons on the Caesar salad were a great touch, but the arugula salad was rather plain and I would have preferred for the salmon to be accompanied with arugula--I think it would have paired well. My 5 star review is due to the desserts! I was blown away by the plating, combination of flavors and size of them! We got the chocolate cake, seasonal fried dough balls, olive oil cake (forgot to take a picture though...) and tart cherry dessert. Every single one was worth the price and worth 5 stars! I have been to Plate in Brookside numerous times now and every time I love it. There is an easy parking garage right next to the restaurant, then you walk into a serene, dark restaurant that is sleek and clean. The waitstaff are incredibly knowledgeable of the menu and have great, straightforward recommendations. I recommend starting with the garlic bread - a delicious version of a fresh challah-style brioche-y truffle garlic bread sprinkled with hot pepper flakes and Parmesan. The truffle butter makes this a fantastic start to the meal. The meatballs are well balanced and well seasoned. Their pork shoulder papardelle is delicious and so deliciously seasoned, it's an absolute yes! Branzino is delicate, if you're looking for a lighter main. This is a great place for friends and dinner - I haven't tried brunch here yet but I look forward to it! read more

We headed here after attempting Garozzos before The Nutcracker.... This place is a hidden jewel. The atmosphere gives modern but slightly 90s rom com New York restaurants- make sense?? The seating was confusing to me.... Perhaps in terms of layout, but for the most part it was pretty empty in there. Our dishes were ALL to die for. The wait staff was so attentive and kind- great service. Dishes: house baked bread served with a seasoned butter- Chef's kiss! I wanted this as my MEAL. Ragu Bolognese- both ground and shredded beef was in the sauce- so smooth and almost creamy, but packed with beefy flavor. I feel like it's a good (safe) choice for someone not adventurous. Carbonara- *sigh. It was perfection. Creamy without being too heavy, when combined with the yolk- it became the dish of the night for all of us. We will be sure to visit soon! read more

We made reservations to eat at Plate for our 30th anniversary. When we made the reservations, there was a question asking if it was a special occasion and I answered that it is our anniversary. We each ordered pasta dishes, and neither came with any bread. We were not satiated, even with salads. There was no mention of our anniversary. Even when we mentioned it, it was largely ignored. Most places will give a small dessert. (I'm not sure why the question of special occasion was even asked during the reservation.). Lastly, you should know there is a fee added to your bill if you don't pay cash. We're surprised at how stingy they are for a fairly expensive restaurant. read more

I understand you don't need to be over the top but my boyfriend mentioned it was my birthday and asked for a candle to add to the dessert we bought and she said no candles but didn't even acknowledge the birthday...pretty odd! This is one of our favorite go-to, reliable neighborhood restaurants - with ample parking available in the garage which is just the cherry on top of their delicious food offerings. My boyfriend & I go here OFTEN lol, so we've tried quite a few of the menu items already. We always love how chill the restaurant is so, we do pull up in our sweats and sit at the bar comfortably on a weeknight usually but even on weekends, its not overstimulating which I love. Our favorites are (besides the happy hour menu items ), the KC strip is always cooked to perfection with that butter on top, we enjoy their house-made starter bread with the truffle butter (with real truffle pieces inside) ugh so good.. & then finally one of my FAVESSS is the arrabiata (spicy red fusili homemade pasta) with pork/veal meatballs and the arugula salad. But the service was not great at all.... things like having an empty martini glass for a very very long time and having to ask someone to have the server return to the table to fill water glasses, place another martini order, etc...at this price point, you don't expect to have to do that. I took my wife here for Valentine's Day and we were both disappointed. The food not only did not feel worth the price paid for it, it did not taste too great either. The appetizer we got seemed like it should have cost $5 not triple that. I never felt I would have my first wedge salad at a "fancy" restaurant; in my opinion, wedge salads are just lazy since all the dressing is on the top leaf. The entrees were just bland and a very small portion from what were used to with other Italian restaurants. The dessert was not worth mentioning anyways. Paying almost $200 for dinner, I would have loved to even be sat at a table that did not wobble. The hostess seemed like she was going to seat us at a booth like we requested when putting in the reservation but someone else came and made her put us at a tall wobbling table. The restaurant itself looks great and somewhere I would go if I want to give others the idea that I am fancy but it's truly not worth it in my opinion. Their very minimal menu that does not seem very Italian to begin with is what kept me from going when I first moved to the area. This experience will be what keeps me going to Garozzo's instead. Plate is my favorite Italian restaurant in Kansas City. I came here with a friend for restaurant week last Friday. We arrived during happy hour, which offers great prices on drinks and food! I was really impressed by the number of happy hour apps that they offer, but it does end at 5pm, so make sure to get here early. When we arrived around 4:45pm, the restaurant was empty, and we were seated at a high top table. We ordered two glasses of wine to start. We then ordered dinner from the restaurant week menu. I had the arancini, salmon, and tiramisu for dessert. The arancini were delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked, but it did not come with any side dishes, and the sauce was pretty sweet. The tiramisu was tasty; it was still slightly frozen, which actually made it tastier! I have yet to have a bad experience at this location, and I highly recommend a visit here! read more
