I stopped into Jim's Family Restaurant while traveling through Tooele and it ended up being one of those great small-town diner experiences you hope to find on the road. I ordered the daily special -- an open-faced prime rib sandwich served with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and mixed vegetables -- and it was phenomenal. The portion was generous, the gravy was rich and comforting, and the prime rib was tender and flavorful. Even the iced tea was excellent, which is always a good sign that a place pays attention to the little things. After dinner I tried a slice of Boston crème pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it was the perfect finish. What really pushed this place over the top though was the service. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They treated me like a regular who had been coming in for years, even though it was my first time in town. And the value? My entire meal with dessert was only $21.57 before tip. Hard to beat that for a dinner this good. Jim's in the Salt Lake Valley has just seemed meh to me lately. So I wasn't sure about this location. It was wonderful! Clean and bright, with kind and attentive employees. My bacon avocado cheeseburger was perfectly cooked with crispy bacon and all the trimmings. Delicious and piping hot sweet potato fries were my side this time. My daughter enjoyed her omelette as well saying it was delicious. Great place for breakfast or lunch. We hope to come back! read more

I have eaten at Jim's a few times and the service is hit and miss. Sometimes the service is top notch and sometimes not so much. The food quality and quantity are inconsistent also. Sometimes the taste and portion size are great and sometimes the food is bland and the portion size is small. With Jim's price increases and inconsistencies, I do not frequent this establishment as much as I used to. I don't like feeling hungry after paying inflated prices. read more

You can tell a restaurant is performing well when it's parking lot is full - and JFR had it full today. We were seated in 15 minutes. Our server was polite, flexible, and responsive. The restaurant was clean inside Our party of four got our lunch within 15-20 minutes and our orders were correct. I had the Hot Turkey Sandwich. It came with a corn medley, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a side of cranberry sauce. Meal was good, but turkey tasted like the frozen, presliced TV dinner turkey. Our food was ready by the time we got there. I ordered the California Cheeseburger and it was delicious. It was ooey and gooey and moist. I put a little fry sauce on it and I ate so fast I almost didn't taste it. My husband got the Western cheeseburger which was also delicious. We both thought they were both good enough to rival the other burger joints in town. The fries were perfectly cooked. I was just missing salt on mine. Which I was sad avnit being as we got take out and I ate it in the car. My toddler is allergic to eggs and dairy so we got the corned beef hash thinking she'd be ok. She still had a reaction. Thinking maybe it was cooked on a grill that had either allergen on it. Overall we enjoyed, we'll be back. But maybe not an allergy friendly place. read more

Service is lousy. If you're not a regular, you might get no attention at all. Food is passable when you can get it. I've watched while 3 tables of regulars got their orders taken before I was even acknowledged. I walked out and went to Virg's! My family and I have been visiting this establishment since around 2008. We've rarely had any issues with service, quality/quantity. Staff has always been friendly, food has been great; no matter what we ordered. Tonight though we were in a time crunch so we decided to order food to go. Families food from what they said was good as always. However, the country fried steak dinner I ordered was less than appetizing. Skippy on portion, mash potatoes were thick and dry, country steak was tasteless, vegetables were soggy, country gravy was tasteless. The roll was what seemed like two weeks old. The side salad was welted like it was from the bottom of whatever packaging. That ended in the trash after one look. Needless to say my meal was a complete waste. Hospital food looked better than what I was given. I am really hoping it was just an off day or new staff that knew no better. My family and I will be returning to make sure it was possibly just bad timing, and not another restaurant falling short because of staff and the economy itself. What I really like about Jim's is that they try to go the extra mile and make it something better than just another neighborhood diner. Have been going to Jim's for dinner every time I pass through Utah....10 or 11 times now. Used to love it for service, food quality and value. Sadly my last 2 times just last week were unfortunate...... service was surly, food was just so-so, food was served on a badly chipped plate...when I pointed this out to the server it was met with indifference. It seemed the manager (owner?) was roaming the floor and giving directions and mixed messages to the servers. I understand that for many this is an entry level job, but either the most basic training is lacking, or these folks are being abused and just don't care. Jim's is our restaurant of choice for breakfast. The food is always good, the service is good depending on how busy they are but we're usually not in a hurry, so no problem. The waitresses are pleasant, never had a grumpy one. One day we went in, a group of 12 of us. Some small kids too. Our waitress was so patient and efficient, l actually couldn't believe it. Stopped by for a late lunch. We wanted to go somewhere we haven't been yet but we should've brought bigger appetites for sure. I had the clubhouse, my husband the Reuben. Both with fries. So they make their own fry sauce and we found it to be too mayonnaise-y. The Reuben seemed to have had a mix with this sauce on his sandwich which made for a less than perfect taste. TV dinner quality food for the most part unless they make it there! But the pies are great.

The food was absolutely amazing my some had the French toast and bacon loved it. I had the Jim's cowboy breakfast that was awesome. My mom ate the Chile verde burrito and had only great things to say about it! Our server on the other had was not friendly when she took our order. She was short with us the 3 times she interacted with us. If it wasn't for the good food I'd probably not pay to eat here again. Hopefully future service tops this one. read more

The wife liked her chicken sandwich and I usually get the country fried steak which is awesome, but today my wife said be adventurous and get something different so I got the chicken parm. First question is why is the sauce brown; it kinda tasted like marinara sauce but that was probably just the Italian seasoning that was dumped in it. 2nd why did I get 2 stray kernels of corn and a stray onion? 3rd is this squishy thing supposed to be a tomato?
