I've never really "hired" a handyman before Jim, but of all of the handymen I've ever dealt with--Jim is the most clean cut, extremely professional, reliable, and incredibly genuine. Jim's hourly rates are reasonable and he does not overcharge, even if he over/underestimates (especially if a quote is given over the phone without seeing the actual place that needs work done)--his fees are appropriate and completely reasonable. I've just moved into a studio apartment that required a much needed upgrade. I called a bunch of handyman services that I found on Yelp, and Jim was only 1 of 3 that got back to me on the same day. Since he was so friendly and patient with my request, I immediately scheduled an appointment with him. He confirmed our appointment the evening before, arrived on time, and promptly got to work after greeting me. He painted my kitchen, bathroom, and a wall in the living room...and my apartment now looks amazing! He also installed a new showerhead and changed my toilet seat in literally less than 5 minutes. Throughout the day, he was also very conversational and friendly. More importantly, I felt that I could trust him with my apartment and belongings, as I left for a couple of hours while he was still working. Hiring Jim was SO worth it (and I paid out of my own pocket since my landlord was not required to make all of the updates that I wanted to make)...I'm loving my apartment! read more

It's hard to find a good handyman in NY. Luckily, I found one. James Scanlan can do anything from plumbing to fixing those odds and ends around the house. Door isn't closing right? Need a faucet installed? Call James. He does a great job and is a stand-up individual. And the best part is, is that he truly enjoys and cares about his work. He installed a faucet in my boss' apartment. He was on top of the job and didn't waste a moment to finish things up. He makes an effort to keep the area he's working in clean. My boss was also in need of new shelving. I had already had the brackets, but Jim got the wood, stained it and put them up. They look fantastic. I Highly recommend him. read more

If you're looking for a honest handyman, look no further... he's willing to travel to you and he's absolutely wonderful. After reading yelp reviews I decided to contact Jim for a last minute plumbing fix I needed for my toilet. Jim was very nice and professional when we spoke, he showed up on time, did the work quickly, and best of all he did not overcharge at all for anything that he did. He cleaned up all of the work, and was super diligent in everything. Even though the call was for plumbing work, he even took the time to take a look at my apartment, and listened to some of the concerns I had with the place. He has the knowledge and expertise to identify what was the cause of some of the issues I had, and what he could do to fix them. I will definitely use Jim for all of the work I need done in the future, and I would highly recommend him for anyone else. read more

Jim Scanlan is incredibly professional, prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable in his field. I hired him to hang some curtains and blinds around my new apartment, and he installed them with no trouble at all! Furthermore, I mentioned that I intend to hang a decorative rug on my wall, and he e-mailed me a few hours after he finished the job here with a list of different options for hanging it. After that, I would wager a bet that, if you look up the word "thorough" in the dictionary, it'll have his picture next to it. Highly recommended! read more

I have some serious work (many anchoring for cables - curtains, mounting sconces - lights, pictures) to be done on the concrete walls of my new r apartment. Jim was on time (even early to ensure he got the address correct). He asked good questions to ensure items were mounted properly. Work was done efficiently. Now my apt looks great! read more

Update- called Jim to install a ceiling fan- he arrived 5 Mins EARLY to the appointment, brought his own ladder and tools, and got the job done in about an hour. He'll be my go to guy for other fixits. Apparently he also does cabinets, molding, etc. read more

Jim is in high demand and has a tightly booked schedule, and when he repaired the rotted windowsills in my apartment, I saw why. I was mega-impressed by how knowledgeable and competent he was. He knows what everything is made of and how everything works; he even knows how to build houses from scratch. He suggested a solution to my windowsill problem that was cheaper than what I thought I needed, and then did a great job of the work. Nice guy too--friendly, patient, genuinely helpful, and clearly loves and takes pride in his work. A real craftsman. Two thumbs up! read more

Jim did some work for me last week. He arrived right on time, maybe even a few minutes early, I can't recall. He had an excellent attitude. Whatever I suggested, he did his best to accommodate. He is very easy to talk to. He is extremely knowledgeable and skillful at his craft and showed his familiarity with putting stuff together, building stuff from materials, design, plumbing, and other areas I required his help in. He is highly professional and polite. A lot of guys in this field are rude and surly- not Jim! I also found him to be honest and trustworthy - I had no worries about leaving him doing some work while I went out to run some errands. He also thoroughly cleaned up the areas he worked in, like from sawdust and stuff. Overall, he did an outstanding job. I recently hired Jim to install a closet system that frankly I was too afraid to tackle myself. After one year of living with my clothes in bins, Jim made me and my clothes very happy! During the first hot week of the (almost) Summer I called Jim to install two wall air conditioners in my apartment. I expected that it would be very hard to schedule a time, but it was all done perfectly less than 24 hours later! Jim was exactly on time, explained what he was doing, and had the patience of a saint as my two year old asked him "What are you doing?" every 3 minutes. Yelp readers, BEWARE! I found out about Jim through Yelp and felt comfortable hiring him because he had received good ratings overall. But, how wrong was I! I hired Jim to install an in-wall air conditioner. He was extremely friendly and helpful at first and because of that I excused some unusual behavior during our first meeting. Upon seeing my air conditioner, he recommended that we try to fix it instead of purchasing a new one. So, adhering to his professional opinion, I drove him to Home Depot and picked up the materials he needed to fix the unit. Three hours later, his recommendation was unsuccessful and yet he still charged me $150. That weekend, he e-mails me some other suggestions which I did appreciate. He apparently found a 6-7 year-old used AC and wanted me to purchase it from his client at a lowered amount. It seemed reasonable and fair enough, though, it was strange how much he wanted me to purchase this AC. Fortunately, I was able to find an AC from my parent's house and asked him to install this one instead. Two days later, he sends me a very unprofessional and rude e-mail accusing me of using him. I still do not know how I supposedly took advantage of him if I am the one left having paid $150 with no AC installed. This experience has left me frustrated and disappointed. Jim is unprofessional, unreliable and moderately skilled. Yelp readers, I suggest you to reconsider before hiring him. read more

I give this guy two stars because on my particular job, he failed to impress me. I asked him to install a new vanity, which he did, but the job took about 3 extra hours because there was a leak that he could not correct once everything was put together. I believe he did not have too much experience with pluming, but other jobs he did for me that same day, like install window guards, and open up a wall A/C whole on a wall, were done ok. He was very professional and guaranteed that he would return to re-do the job, should the leak start again, and he was good on his promise. He maintained a positive and professional attitude. Also, he did not charge me for the extra time it took to fix the leak, nor for having to return. Overall, he seems more experienced with A/C jobs and nailing in things on the wall, but may not be too experienced with pluming. read more

GREAT JOB JIM! I found Jim on this site (YELP) - And after comparing and researching many other handyman services, Jim was my final choice! And a good choice too! I had a 1pm appointment with Jim to take care of several projects in my studio. He and his assistant Giovani showed up at 12:45pm - nice and early! Already he has scored high! He introduced himself and his able assistant and they both got right to the jobs at hand. I had several! I needed my 42" flat screen mounted, rods hung, shelves in my bathroom, a medicine cabinet removed and replaced and so on and so on..... JIm and his assistant Giovani adequately used their time and worked with professionalism and a polite smile. I had no problem with leaving my studio for an errand or two while they worked. HIs pricing was totally reasonable - Especially if you are on a budget. I am on one and Jim was very honest with his final bill. I "will" be asking him back again! read more

Worked with him a great deal - had him on retainer with a property and also at my home. While he was always prickly he was dependable and efficient to an extent. When it came to a small job (flushing radiators and getting the boiler going in time for when heat needed to go on in mid- October) he became a horror show. Despite having complete flexibility in hours, he blew it off for six weeks straight till it became a desperate situation. He yelled at me saying I couldn't expect him to do it on a Moments notice when he has six weeks. He lied and said he had flushed the system and it was filthy. He actually yelled at my sick and elderly tenant and told her to use more blankets! He ultimately just texted instructions on how to work the boiler and expected thanks for that behavior. When I eventually needed to get into my basement which he had padlocked and filled with his crap, despite much advance notice, he flipped out again. He finally emptied only half of the junk he left there, threw concrete powder down a drain and removed light fixtures just as revenge. Apparently he got involved in a restaurant partnership and they were not doing well. But he had worked for me for three years and if paid him Loads of money but he just flipped out and became Nasty and irresponsible out of no where. Very strange man. read more

Maybe this guy is too busy now that he has so many good yelp reviews but I am sorry to say that my experience with him is not a good one. I contacted him via email with a detailed list of what I needed done. He responded a few days later with an affordable price. I replied saying that the price was good and asked how soon he could do the work and that I could only be home during evenings or weekends- this was on a Tuesday. He responded quickly and asked how early in the evening I could be home on that Friday. I responded 5:00 p.m. He wrote back quickly and said, "Great!" and then asked if there were any restrictions in my building that he needed to know about. I replied and said no, we're good to go. I left work early that Friday to be home for his arrival. When he still was not there at 6:30 p.m., I contacted him to ask if he was still coming that night. He replied that we never confirmed the appointment.....which is ridiculous. He asked if I was available on Monday and I wrote back and asked if he could come over the weekend instead. I still have received no reply from him and it's been over a month. Apparently, this is guy is no longer reliable. Beware. read more
