First time here the other day...everything was great and the portions were bigger than expected. We got 3 lunch specials all were tasty, especially the broccoli beef. Love this place as the food is always delicious! Sweetest lady that owns and waits on you, but sometimes hard to understand. Her son does some of the cooking too. The shrimp dishes are excellent and the fried rice is very traditional with the peas, pork, carrot and egg. They give you so much food we always have leftovers. I was craving hot and sour soup and did't want to drive to Salinas or Marnia so we thought we'd give Jim's another try. First thing I noticed was they've changed their menu, we haven't been here for a long time so not sure how long ago they changed it. Their prices have gone up considerably since the last time here. They used to be a cheap place to grab a bite but no longer. I got my soup to go and when I got home I couldn't wait to eat it. I was sadly very disappointed. It's not your traditional hot and sour soup. It was kind of black with only carrots, tofu, black mushrooms, bamboo shoots and a tiny bit of egg. It just didn't have the right taste or texture that it should have had. But the worst thing was it had no meat? I was looking forward to those shreds of pork but there was none. So I had to pay 7.50 for a bowl of vegan soup. That wouldn't really bother me if I had know first. I think this was possibly the worst hot and sour soup I've had. Update: 1 hour after writing this I've had the worst Diarrhea ever! read more

The place does need a good sprucing up. I am pleasantly surprised with the "American dishes" I had the grilled shrimp penne and it was wonderful. It tasted fresh and well put together. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food here in the states so I didn't order any. I know they do a special dinner once a month usually the last Sunday of the month. I hear it's very wonderful and competes with foods from restaurants in downtown carmel. I've see the menus but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I do wish they would do a thorough cleaning and some updating. It's kinda cluttered and menus do stick a little. But I like the place and a nice place to go if you live nearby. read more

Once was a end of month fixed price dinner which, was very good, and the other was for my birthday several months ago. Both times food was very good and service was excellent. Tonight we tried fir the 1st time this place in our neighborhood shopping mall. Wife wanted Chinese so I stoped here for connivence but we are happy I did. All we ordered was the "House Chow Men" which tasted delicious. It's always good when the wife is happy with where I pick. Soooooo much food! I was a bit skeptical of this place, it being Chinese/American and all but decided to give it a chance, I'm always willing to find these hidden little gems in the most unlikely places. Lunch started out with a (free, generous) portion of fried wontons and a sweet chile sauce. I got the lunch portion of mandarin pork and chow mein, for 6.50$ it was a good sized portion of food, the Szechwan beef with chile was just as delicious and large. Best hot and sour soup I've eaten in awhile, full of flavor and super spicy, the way I love it! Huge cup of it too. Didn't touch the egg rolls (got too full) but the fried prawns were good. The waitress who seated us was super friendly, it was a little slow to get our waters but I think it's because of the fried wontons, after that the service was perfect. I had asked for a glass of their Redtree Pinot Grigio but I guess they were out, instead she brought us one of their nicer bottles and filled (I mean FILLED) my glass, was not stingy whatsoever and charged me for the cheaper glass. Will be back to try more off of the extensive menu and am definitely going to RSVP for their winemakers dinner they hold every last Sunday of the month! read more

The absolute worst "Chinese" food I've ever had. The sauce was watery and tasted of straight vinegar. I couldn't even choke down the dumplings that went with the sauce. When my family lived in Prunedale Jim's Restaurant used to be our go-to Chinese Restaurant and every time we would order food the owners were really nice to us and would treat us with a smile. Jim's is one of Prunedale's secret gems for Chinese food and one of the main reasons why is because of their amazing food and it's so tasty that you can have leftovers and it still tastes great. I can honestly say that the original owners of Jim's Restaurant have turned this restaurant into an amazing business and you can see why the owner has won many awards and why this restaurant is a top Chinese restaurant in Prunedale. As many of you know Steven and Annie have opened a second restaurant in Marina named Annie's House which proves that Jim's Restaurant will be a huge success for years to come through their new ownership and I wish them great success in the years ahead read more

We ordered pork fried rice , chicken chow mein, kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, egg rolls and orange chicken Every single item had a different flavor than what traditional Chinese food is supposed to taste like. It is if you decided one day you were going to make Chinese food and said oh heck I can make Chinese food what do you want pork fried rice? I got this! And then you made the attempt To break it down when you order an egg roll have a certain expectation of what an egg roll looks like and taste like that crispy outer flaky crust... Not here! It looks like a chimichanga and has no texture or flavor of an actual egg roll that you would be familiar with Every single thing was Bland unfamiliar and unappetizing whereas typical Chinese doesn't last the night in our house one plate was all anyone could handle.. The owner is real friendly ..and we are sad to not support them any longer ...but for Chinese this has gotten the ...Never Again label.. read more

Updated review: The food can be very good-- and such variety! It's fun that your friend can dig into fried rice while you enjoy an excellent hamburger on an herbal bun. I would give it 3-4 stars on the food alone but I've left it at 2-3 because the place could stand a thorough cleaning. I was also recently disappointed because the fries, which had been good on other visits, were very greasy & dark. I think they may have re-fried some leftovers. They were very unappealing. Don't let its location and exterior fool you. This is some GOOD food. (Just ignore the fact that it's in Prunetucky and right off the freeway.) I liked the batch of hot crisps brought to the table while we perused the menu. The homemade chili sweet and sour available for dipping was top-notch. There was a variety of food to choose from -- traditional Chinese and American "bistro" fare. We decided to stick with Chinese and we were not disappointed. We had: Hot and Sour Soup - Piping hot and perfectly spicy. Salt & Pepper Shrimp - Hot and crispy, right out of the fryer. Perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper, chili, and other spices that make your nose run. The shrimp was mixed in with some green onions, thin-sliced bells, and some onions. All very, very flavorful. Jim's Egg Foo Young - I think it was called Jim's. It was the "special" egg foo young. There were three, large, fresh egg patties filled with mung beans. The patties were topped with crisp, fresh veggies (celery, broccoli, zucchini, asparagus), BBQ Pork, Shrimp, and Beef. I couldn't stop eating it...and I hate eggs. We were too full for dessert, but asked for the dim sum and brunch menu and vowed to return in two weeks. The tough choice will be...do we have bacon apple sausage and waffles? Or dim sum? read more

Jim's has dim sum on the weekends, and since there isn't a huge crowd for dim sum, he cooks to order. Amazing food. There is both Chinese and American food, and both are wonderful. Authentic Chinese and tasty American food. I don't know where the chef was trained, but I know that he used to work in a hotel in San Francisco, where there are foodies abound. You can't go wrong with the menu since everything I have had is very, very good. I keep missing the winemaker's dinner nights. Jim's is a hidden gem to say the least. I was brought here by a local resident who raved about how wonderful everyone was and how friendly they all were. Boy was he right! The guy that owns the place has been a chef for a really long time and specializes in Chinese and American foods. The menu can make your head spin with all the varieties and decisions you have to make, but none of the food will disappoint you! They have everything you could ever imagine to eat or drink, and the quality is pure bliss. I didn't expect a ton based on the location of the place, but the recommendation lived up to every minute of it. We had a sampler plate of some wontons and fried shrimp. The cream cheese and spinach with the sweet and sour sauce is *drool*. We than had some homemade bread and butter. Followed up with a wonderful bottle of local wine. I had a nice 28 day aged New York with a ton of vegetables and mashed potatoes. The portions were out of this world, and the food was just so good. At lunch the place was nearly empty, but it's sort of hidden, so that is part of the problem. Place is a bit of a throwback and service was fast as was the delivery of food. As far as the food goes, it was really pretty bland. It seemed like they heated up the basics and threw and existing sauce on it. I could not tell the difference between carrots and beef like it came from a crockpot. I left most of my food on the plate. It's convenient to my house and just wish it was fresher tasting but I think I will pass next time I need a Chinese food fix. read more

I was lured in by the banner reading "Dim Sum, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm, Sat & Sun." Having to go to South San Jose for the nearest dim sum once a month, I was excited to see food culture arrive in Prune-tucky! While the diversity of items could never rival a dim sum palace like Grand Fortune, it was a respectable offering of the old classics. What made this special is that it was so obviously house made. Sometimes the thickness of the noodles varied showing that it wasn't a Costco special, but rather made to order. The siu mai was some of the best I've ever eaten. The shrimp rice noodle could have used a bit more filling, but overall, everything was fresh and delicious. And, in true Prunedale style, by the time we'd finished eating, everyone at the five filled tables were chatting with each other about dim sum. Fun! read more

My wife took me to Jim's today for my birthday lunch. We got mongolian chicken, kung pao shrimp and walnut shrimp with chow mein. GREAT WAITSTAFF. The woman was very nice and very thorough in cleaning our table and the young man was fantastic. We got our food and the chow mein was very very good and unusual! (in a good way!) The walnut shrimp was among the best we've had and the other dishes were terrific, super hot (temperature)... just a really really great experience! We'll be back for sure as we live close, we'd been meaning to go for a long time and now we did! some women near us got a sandwich with shrimp and avocado and it was absolutely beautiful to look at!
