Due to Jim's convenient location, I've driven past here thousands of times. Eaten here once. I only went because they sent me a free birthday meal certificate in the mail. How they knew it was my birthday, I have no clue. On a rainy mid-afternoon, when business was slow, I decided to hit them up. After being seated and perusing the menu, I decided on the Chicken Fried Steak. Supposedly one of their specialties. I had to wait a long time for my waitress to come take my order. This can't be a good sign, I thought. When I finally get my food, it was tasteless and sub-standard, even for a diner. This is their specialty? Blechh. My waitress, who's chatting with her co-workers and vacuuming the place, never comes to refill my empty water glass. I had to flag someone else down that was passing by. The place is nearly empty! Same story when I need to get my check to leave this depressing soul-suck. Does she sense I'm paying with a gift cert., even though it was stashed in my pocket? Does she realize I would've tipped her generously because my meal was free? It takes *forever*. As I leave, I think "this is my birthday meal?" Just got back from eating here again with the same friend as before. This time we weren't subjected to that creepy waitress. We had David, and he was great! We both ordered the same things that we did last time. It was about the same, probably because it's Jim's, and we all know there's not a four-star culinary chef in the kitchen. On a scale of Long John Silver's in Waco to Grill Girls it was a Jim's for sure. Okay, so I've never been to Grill Girls because I'm cheap and tacky, but I've heard it's really good... When we ordered the pie with our food, David made sure to ask when we wanted it. This time, we did opt to have it first. I don't really know why, but we did. He was very attentive, polite, and overall a great server. We never had to ask him to refill our drinks. We never even saw our drinks remotely near half empty. When he'd bring us new ones, he'd even set them down super gently. I appreciated the overall respect that he gave not only us, but also to our "dining experience" so to speak. Anyone ever have that server that always seems to jump in with a "HEEEEEEEY!!! CAN I GET YOU ANYTHING?!?!?" at least once every five minutes when you're trying to talk? Yeah, that will never be David. There was another server there that seemed really on her game too. I watched her take care of her tables and she seemed really personable. I love Jim's!! Ever since my mom brought me here when I was little I have always loved the place. I order the same meal each time- chicken and Swiss without the Swiss with mashed potatoes and fried okra. I love it so much! The chicken is cooked with perfect seasoning with mushrooms at the top. I'm really not one to write negative reviews. I try to be objective as possible while still expressing my personal experience. I understand that most of what happens at restaurants is not the sole responsibility of one person and that the attitude and actions of other patrons can often effect your own experience. For these reasons, I try to retain empathy in bad circumstances and give second chances. I have given the Research Blvd Jim's location more than just a second chance. I grew up on Jim's in Oak Hill. Dated and divey, sure, but the food is exactly how it presents itself and service can't be beat. You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't agree with me. Jim's has proven itself worthy of the sometimes longggg wait on a weekend. For convenience reasons, I started going to the Jim's in North Austin. One look at this location should tell you its the middle child of the group. A little neglected, a little hard to reach, and a little too far off from caring about how its perceived. The food wasn't up to par with Oak Hill but we learned to adjust our order around it. Chicken Fried Steak not good? That's fine, how can you go wrong with Rustler's Roundup or Biscuits and Gravy? I can deal with that. I can deal with the dated and dirty atmosphere , and I can deal with unenthused staff that gets the job done. At the end of the day, I just want breakfast for dinner. But what I cannot deal with is, after all the empathizing and second chances I have thrown their way, when I come in on a weekday morning get sat in a not slow but not busy section and get ignored for 20 minutes as I watch GROUPS of people get sat after me and order before me and my spouse. No drinks, no "hey, be with you in a few". I can wait. I can even understand there are probably good reasons why one group might order before another. But to not be greeted, smiled at, acknowledged while two groups of 5 people each get attended to before you, with the restaurant filling up more and more with each passing minute, I couldn't stand that. Finally, when I stood up, I heard one waitress tell another "can you get to them?" so I sat back down. The waitress behind us nodded, brought the table behind us coffee and walked away. I'm sure she was going to come back, but I waited one minute and said "I'm done." Even more surprising to me, as we are leaving our table and walking out, I see the manager at the register, checking out a customer. I hang back for a minute thinking "Surely someone will tell him what is going on and he will attempt to make amends. " No. I wait another minute, thinking I will say something when he has a free moment. The moment doesn't come fast enough and my boyfriend promises me he will drive us down to Oak Hill for some real Jim's. We got seated, greeted, and orders taken within 5 minutes at the busier south location. Our waitress was kind and helpful and, better yet, when I hung around waiting to give my waitress her tip, the manager immediately walked over to ask me if I needed help with anything. She probably thought I was crazy for how much I smiled at that. read more

It was pretty dead around 5pm, the server was arguing with the cook about answering the phone. She was cursing and complaining about lack of teamwork. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, well done, with only cheese, bacon & pickles. Well I guess the cook was pissed off at the server & took it out on my burger. My burger was burnt, dry & missing pickles. The after taste has me feeling as if I licked the charcoal off a dirty grill. Next time I walk into a restaurant & the staff is acting immature I will just get up & walk out. I'm sorry but how the hell do you mess up a burger?! read more

Jim's is a Texas version of Denny's. The place transports you back to an old diner without the smoke. They have a classic sit down bar with swivel chairs, intimate booths for 2 and family-size aqua color booths for 10. Their specialty is breakfast and they're open 24 hours. I had the pot roast for supper and the meat was soft and tender along with tasty mash potatoes, brown gravy, green beans, a dinner roll with a pat of butter on the side. The music is a throwback too. Friendly, attentive service is nice. Finally, I could resist the fresh apple pie ala mode with either vanilla or Jim's custom cinnamon ice cream. read more

THE REAL DEAL could be used to describe this place. when i go to "my" jims, i get reminded that good service, professionalism, attention and courtesy are what i typically expect when being waited on (you know, by a waiter). HOWEVER, for a waiter to possess all of the above---all at one time, consistently?-- never happens. if youd like to witness all of the above, please go to "my jims"-- ive lived here all my life (eek im 50), ive not ever been disappointed (well, except when they run out of mashed potatoes). may i now address the food? its got a home-cooked feel. real REAL good. they sometimes have specials that run for a month or two. STAND BACK! those are especially yummy--always. a quick example from my to-go order, earlier tonight: among other things, i ordered french toast, with fixins on the side (powdered sugar, cinnamon and syrup). when i got home, i began unpacking my order...everything correct and clearly marked, the best part---the syrup was HEATED, in separate little special containers. you gotta love that! its a cool place with a great vibe---a dying breed to jims #11: keep on keepin on!!! read more

Super disappointed with this location. We stopped by hoping to have a nice late brunch at around 1pm on Wednesday 3/11/2020. Food was decent. Our waiter seemed nice until it was time to pay. We gave him my card and waited for over 20 minutes (they were not busy). My fiancé later got impatient and decided to walk up to the register. An old guy, didn't even greet us or pay much attention. We asked to check out and let him know we had given our card to the waiter. His response "I think your card was stolen. You should cancel your credit card". We laughed thinking he was joking. NO he was dead serious no emotion no remorse. Just a "no really you should cancel your card, someone took it". DO NOT TRUST THIS JIMS SUPER SHADY!!! Jim's breakfast was A-OK. The atmosphere is a 70's-like with turquoise booths and gold lamps hung from the ceiling. The portions were generous for breakfast. I tried a veggie and bacon omelette with fruit and hash browns that were very crispy on top (morning goodness). My husband tried the plate with eggs and fried pork chops and was more impressed with his plate than I was with mine. The side of pancakes was light and fluffy and tasty (just like other reviews said). A complaint - the coffee was weak. Staff was nice. Drinks were refilled frequently. Most of the staff have been with Jim's for years. They have great breakfasts, burgers and chicken. This location is probably the busiest during weekend hours, but they seem to move people through quickly and they also have counter service. As a fixture in Austin for as long as I have been alive, Jim's has been a staple. This place is open 24 hours. The reason I give it five stars is that no matter what the day or the hour, I can get decent food, and the location is easy to get to. If I want pancakes at 2:00 in the morning, this is an easy stopover. A BLT on the way back from work, no problem. It also is one of the few "old Austin" places left. read more

The best Patty Melt in Austin that I know about. No really, they use an 8-ounce chopped steak instead of a hamburger patty....great place to get chicken fried whatever at a reasonable price. You will probably leave full for not too much money. Also I love the big parking lot, large space and extra-cool 70's appeal (you can almost sense the liesure suits and smoking section), it is almost always easy to get in and out fast on weekdays. Staff is (usually) friendly and most are long timers. So I gave them five stars to up their overall score. read more

My family and I were at this Jim's location two days after the Charlsie negative review. We had the completely opposite experience. Our waitress was excellent---I left a $15 tip. The food was fantastic. I had cheese enchiladas and they were on par with the wonderful enchiladas served at The Vermillion in Brownsville, Texas. An A+ for Jim's. I don't know how anyone rate's Jim's above 1 star. 1 star is really too much. Our waitress, while nice, was totally insane and couldn't remember anything while regaling us about her phone conversation that kept her from bringing me coffee for 10 minutes (had to ask again). The coffee tasted like it was the third time they had run the water through some stale not-as-good-as folger's grounds. Eggs = ok, edible. biscuits and gravy = the worst I have had in my entire life, no exaggeration. 1 biscuit was soggy and didn't taste like bread. The other biscuit was so stale and old I couldn't cut it with a knife (yes really). The gravy was most certainly poured directly out of a can - you can just hear the thwoop / splat. totally gross. the orange juice was ok because they had an outside vendor orange juice machine which prevented them from screwing it up. The service and food was REALLY slow (like 35 min to get food) and it wasn't even busy in the restaurant. Jim's is the waiting room for hell. read more

The worst service I have ever received. From the moment you walk in the door it's awful. Not a single employee was friendly. We were standing by the "please wait to be seated" sign for 5 minutes and watched MANY employees walk right past us without even saying "we'll be right with you." So we seated ourselves at the bar so we could get some food. Our waiter didn't say "hi" or "how are you?" He said "know what ya want yet?" Ummm no we just got here. He never said thank you or even your welcome when we thanked him for our food. Food was average. The prices are VERY good though. Very fair priced. That is the only reason I put two stars. read more

Been craving their pancakes and they didn't disappoint! I feel their pancakes are some of the best! They are light and fluffy and absorb butter and syrup like a sponge! Most pancakes don't do that and the syrup just runs off on to the plate. I have tried both of the Kerbey Ln location's pancakes (Nutella and cinnamon roll) and still prefer Jim's. read more

I have always been diner person that is how I grew up. This particular Jims compared to all other diners in the Austin area. Granted nothing replaces my home town diner in North texas but this comes damn close. The tenure of the staff is remarkable I am greeted by first name like many other customers that come. The reason I am giving this place 4 stars is because the waitress we had was amazing and the food was good! The waitress we had was busting her butt waiting on the whole restaurant while the other younger Hispanic girl was leaning on the counter scratching her scratch offs. Then made an announcement that she won 50 bucks and she go home because of it. I called her to the table bc the other women was running around taking orders and getting food and drinks and when I did she replayed with huh what do you want! I was in shock of how rude and disrespectful she was but I guess I was making her work how could I!
