This was a good dining experience. The food was decent--a little on the cafeteria side, but it was good. It felt like eating food from home. The service was great--very friendly, welcoming, and warm. It also felt like being at home as it was family friendly and offered free kids meals on Sundays and Mondays. The last time I was at Jim's was years ago. They have great food I told my friend who we both agreed we needed to get something to eat. I made a quick exit and turned around and pulled into Jim's. It was Tuesday night 9:30 maybe 4 booths of people in the restaurant. We were both hungry for breakfast, looking at the menu, the waiter came over kneeled down, I asked the question are your deserts homemade? He replied I don't eat sweets, I don't know. I asked him if he could find out. I was thinking of buying a homemade pie for my friend as a surprise. I must have made him him mad for asking him that. That's when his attitude became very bad and he was rude. When we told him what we wanted to order I asked him what kind of ham do the serve with their breakfast, he turned his head and said "PIG" excuse me can you just find out for me. He got up and went to the kitchen. He returned with the large slab of Ham and said is this ok. I said ok, about that time he plopped the ham down on the table behind him . The manager came out and said are you wanting to know what's in the ham? I told the manager how rude the waiter had been and bullish. The manager didn't apologise he just walked away. My friend and I waited 20 min for breakfast when there were only 4 booths in the restaurant. Everyone had their food except for us. This waiter kept snickering and looking our way making us feel so uncomfortable that we got up and left. Before I walked out the door I stopped and told the Manager I would never be back here no matter how good the food is. His waiter made my friend and myself feel very uncomfortable and unsafe. As I was talking to the mtg the waiter was snickering at me at the counter. The manager said do you want your food to go. Sorry to say but this was the worst breakfast I've probably ever had. I had high hopes for Jim's. I'd seen the parking lot packed full of cars on a Sunday morning so I figured it must be good. There's a true generational crowd here. Maybe it's a social thing for older folks to come to Jim's and chat. I don't know. I hope they're not coming here for the food. I ordered the breakfast eggs migas. The waitress was being frank with me and she said, "good, that's actually the best thing we serve here." Well, I'm not sure, maybe it is the best thing they serve, but it was not good. Everything was kind of watery and tasteless. The beans were clearly from a can and I don't think the eggs were real eggs, probably liquid eggs. That makes me really sad to think of what all the other dishes taste like. And those poor old people eating them every week... I'm sad and I don't understand. Oh well. It's not the place for me and my young hipster friends. I wish the best for all those older folks and the waitresses there. They seemed nice. I thought for a moment me and my "diverse" group of friends might get lynched by some Donald Trump supporting Texan but thankfully that did not happen. Nothing really unique on the menu, very traditional. Although i just ate breakfast there, you can tell that they cook everything very well with care. Omelets and biscuits tasted like they were made from scratch. Pancakes were big and also homemade. Basically it's IHOP menu but the food tastes real and is made with real ingredients!!!! read more

Their breakfast is DISGUSTING. I ordered steak and eggs. My steak was to be medium rare and my eggs were supposed to be over easy. The eggs were cooked as requested. However, the steak was not medium rare. It was over cooked to almost medium WELL. The meal came with hash browns which looked really good but they tasted as if they were burnt. This was my first visit to this diner and we absolutely loved it. The decor was dated, but we were thrilled it matched the 80's music that was piping through. The food was delicious. All of us ordered breakfast even though it was 10p.m. (Because breakfast is great anytime.) Nathan was our server. He was patient, attentive and courteous. PLEASE dont let the divey fool you. We arrived after an early morning meeting at our job (myself and Daniel). We looked at the reviews and made the correct decision. We were greeted immediately and seated immediately. Service was on point and super friendly. There are alot of regulars here we noticed as we chatted and waited for our food. Which made us feel like we stepped into another place and time. Austin is not Austin anymore but Jim's gives you that old Austin feel, it's just heartwarming. I ordered biscuits and sausage gravy (theres a choice of cream gravy). My biscuits were fall apart fluffy. Soo light and flaky, I was quite shocked it was something I did not expect. Ordered a side of bacon which came out meaty and crispy. Gravy was on point. Full of sausage, creamy and delicious. Daniel ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast and we shared bites so we could taste them both. His chicken fried steak was tender, seasoned, and light considerering it was fried and was super tasty and satisfying. I only give 4 stars because we only tried 2 things on the menu and I'm looking forward to adding more stars on our next visits because this resturaunt offers great variety and I look forward to delving into their menu further. We both enjoyed it soo much all we could talk about as we headed to work for the later shift and all day was how good the food was and how we look forward to coming back with our family. My shrimp was raw(scary!), my steak was burnt and tasted like the scrapings from an old grill, the vegetables were inedible mush, my dinner roll was clearly microwaved. Only thing decent enough to eat we're the fried mushrooms. The most heartbreaking part was my potatoes which turned to a flat pile of liquid once my fork touched them. Hideous! My chicken fried steak had more batter to it than steak (and it tasted frozen) and the meat was super tough, if that wasn't bad enough it was salty and dry. My broccoli tasted like it was from 1947 (The Year Jim's Restaurants opened) And it tasted frozen. Gordon Ramsay needs to have this place on Kitchen Nightmares! I mean for real! I don't know what was more hideous the food or the disgusting green carpet that looks like baby vomit. I'm sorry to be so blunt but I'm giving my honest opinion! We go here about once a week and the service is great and the food taste great. I've ordered lots of different menu items and they've all been fantastic. Our favorite waitress is Jenny and our favorite waiter is Alex. You'll get consistently great food here and it's got a family Homestyle atmosphere. This morning I enter Jim's as I do most morning and sat down to make my order to go. I sat waiting to be acknowledge, the mgt. looked at me and turn her head and two waiter did likewise. I continued to wait and another waiter came from the back looked my way and asked had I been waited on. I politely stated "no just being ignored"! I finally was able to make my order, at the checkout the mgt. came over and asked me was everything ok? I said to her you ignored me along with two of your employees. She just stared at me and never made a comment. I have never been treated that way and I will never go there again. Just left this Jim's about an hour ago and have to say the service was excellent. I informed the waitress I had a flight ot take and she had the breakfast on the table in less than 5 minutes. She refilled the coffee, asked if I wanted a coffee for the road, took my check to the cashier for me. Com'on even mom didn't do it any bettter. I like Jim's and its diner vibe. We stopped in this weekend after not having been in a while. The quality of the food is still the same (yummy!) and the prices are still low (awesome!). We had an amazing server who was quick to top off my husband's coffee to keep it hot. I ordered the eggs with diced bacon mix in and a side of hash browns and a biscuit with gravy. My husband ordered the french toast. Two people with full meals and one coffee cost around $13. We'll be back! read more

Great brunch place. Went here on a Sunday and it was very busy about a 30 min wait so I'm glad the food was worth it :) I got the eggs Benedict which they only have it one kind of way but it was tasty and for the portions you get it was a great price. Austin, in my opinion, lacks good diners. Jim's is one of the exceptions. Most of the food is mediocre, but I love the fries and the fish sandwich. The fish sandwich stands up among the best in the city. The bun is slightly sweet and complements the fried fish well. Too many places nowadays like to gunk up their fries with batter. Jim's is like a Texas-specific version of Denny's, which I actually dig the idea of. The service is quick and friendly, but the food is only mediocre. This location is not open 24hrs but others are. The pancakes are really good. My absolute favorite is the Chichen Fried Steak breakfast with my eggs over easy, hashbrowns, toast & biscuits. Their is something about the yolk and gravy mixing together and then dunking your toast into all that messy goodness....yum! If you dont want soething as heavy, try the Rustlers Round up. 3 eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, and hashbrowns or grits. Either way, you will love it! My total was $11.67 I gave the waitress a $2 Cash tip and paid with credit upon signing the receipt on tip I wrote cash and put total 11.67 why they took an additional $3 off my card I have know ideas as if my broke behind wasnt going to notice. Nice homey place. Classic diner with the classic diner food. Chicken fried steak has just the right amount of breading, which makes the dish nearly perfect. Biscuits and gravy were tasty as well. I miss the old fashioned diners that use all the good, flavorful dishes with real bacon or sausage drippings. You know, all that stuff that's bad for you! I have been eating here for over 20 years. Several of the wait staff have waited on me all of these years. We have gotten older together. It is what it is....a good diner. I eat breakfast here at least one day a week and it is good food, good coffee, friendly service. The food was okay, the scrambled eggs were a little runny, the hash browns a little too oily, and the pancakes were kinda crispy. The reason for the five stars is our server, Javier. I watched him take care of 9 tables, four of which (us included) sat at the same time. I also watched a waitress stand and watch him get flooded while she stood and talked with another employee. I dont know what was so important that she couldn't lend a hand. After all, customers don't care who's section it is, we just want to be served. Javier seemed more concerned with putting customers first and for that the whole restaurant benefits with a five star review. You either talk about great service or you do it. Javier has innate customer service skills. He will not be there for long so learn from him while you can. Side note, customers can see and hear everything that goes on behind the counter so servers and employees should be mindful of how they are perceived by patrons. read more

Jim's is just a regular old place but it's easily accessible and open 24 hours. I go there with my parents for breakfast when they're in town. The biscuits and gravy are the way to go and the service at this location is good enough to get you in and out in enough time to get to work or get to bed depending on when you visit. read more
