    Welcome to Jim's
    Rosie M.

On a Sunday morning, we decided to have brunch. Luckily, my partner found Jim's Restaurant as an American style diner. We drove to the restaurant and found parking right away. We didn't have to wait very long after writing our name on the waiting list. We thought that the food should be okay because the waiting area was full of local patrons. Checking the reviews on Yelp, the chicken fried steak looked like the dish to get! I ordered the chicken fried steak with 2 eggs over easy, a side of fruit and wheat toast. The eggs were really good! The chicken fried steak was very dry and salty. The fruit was colorful and most of it was fresh enough. As we were eating, we wondered why it was so hard to breathe. Then we noticed black mold on the ceiling which was kind of everywhere. Looking at the couple in the booth behind us, they had a large dog sitting that was not a service dog, on the bench seat in the booth behind us. The dog wasn't so bad. After we paid for our meal, we looked up at the ceiling near the waiting area and saw more black mold in the ceiling which was very not okay. We won't be back.

This was a double meat cheeseburger, and fries. There was nothing special about this burger. The seasoning was not there, fries or basic.

I went here on my lunch break hoping to get a nice decent good lunch in a timely fashion. I seated myself at the bar and proceeded to order a half-and-half, tea, and a double meat cheeseburger, and fries.. I had to remind a bartender after 10 minutes to bring me my drink, and shortly after that, my food was brought to me. Before I start speaking about the food, let me speak briefly on the gnat infestation at this place . The gnats we're not small they were pretty big in size. I had to keep swatting to keep them away from me flying around my face and flying on my food. You would think that a restaurant will be able to get that problem on the control. It was not a very welcoming situation because you cannot enjoy your food or your space. Asked for the hamburger and fries, everything about that food experience was bland and basic. There was nothing that stood out about Jim's. It was not $17 worth of food value.

Cash wallet with all the money in it.

First let admit , I eat here several times a week. Many of the servers have been here a long time and know me as a regular. That said , I eat here often because it's the most consistently great food and service. But I wanted to add this tidbit that should make you feel good about dining here. I was on my motorcycle so didn't have my usual routine of gathering my belongings after eating. Somehow I left my cash wallet in the booth. I did not discover this until late that night. The next day I walk in and immediately they tell me , we have something for you. My wallet. With the $130 still in it. Great food great service great atmosphere and great honest people.

The service was very friendly and our waitress gave great recommendations for our food. Her name is Michelle. The ambiance seemed like a place to take your family to eat, it was homey inside. Always came to refill my coffee but I wish they had some other flavors of creamer. However, I didn't ask so they might have them. My food was cooked nicely, the eggs weren't overdone and the biscuit was actually nice and flaky. We also got the chicken fried steak which had some delicious seasonal jalepeno gravy on top but I wish it would've been crispier. Overall, I think they've got some great staples, the service is really nice and I like the old fashion diner style. We'd definitely come back here.

2 eggs over medium, delicious greasy sausage, extra crispy hash browns with a side of gravy $8

Still the BEST old school breakfast done like no other. Yelp should let us do less words..

To be fair, we stopped in here while between things we had to do, just got coffee and beverages. We sat at the bar area and were not here long so the three stars is just do that that. It was crowded but we were up front with our server that we just were stopping in for a beverage and to discuss future plans. She was nice and fast without being overbearing. Place hasn't changed much in all the years it has been there. For a old fashioned, comfort food dinner this is the place to go. Nothing was wrong with our visit but we didn't do much or need much on this go round.

Best darn hamburger I've had in Texas. For real.

Why would this particular restaurant qualify for five stars? Furnishings are shabby and dated. I did not detect any environmental practices. There's so much room for improvement. Well... Take note, Yelp: This place is a gem! * When service is some of the best I have ever experienced. Shout out to the friendliest and most efficient waitress of my acquaintance: Ms Kaz! * When hardly any of the main courses are over $12. * When even two of the pickiest eaters (6 and 8 yrs) give new food two thumbs up. * When my $7.99 #1 Jim's Original Burger, fully loaded, is scrumptious. I ate every bite. And all the fries it came with. * When the food is prepared fresh. Not from cans!

Jim's is an absolute gem of an establishment. Local to the Austin area with several locations around town. Offering the old school diner feel and vibe to them. They serve all of your classic items and the portion sizes and prices are extremely affordable. Food was absolutely delicious I got their pancakes and southwest Omlette. Service was great and we never had to wait too long for a table nor for anything from our server. If I'm looking for breakfast with an old school feel Jim's will be my spot to go to.

The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. My daughter and I both ordered the chicken fried chicken, and she substituted the collard greens for mac and cheese. The sausage gravy served with the chicken fried chicken was a little unexpected, but I actually enjoyed the subtle kick of spice it had. The collard greens weren't for me, but that's more of a personal preference since I've never been a fan. The mac and cheese, however, felt like it was missing something. Maybe it was the blend of cheeses, but it wasn't the classic, ooey-gooey diner-style mac and cheese we were hoping for. My brother ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffles had a fermented aroma and tangy flavor that caught us off guard. After speaking with the manager, she explained that they're made with a sourdough batter. While that may appeal to some people, it just wasn't his favorite. Overall, we had a good experience thanks to the outstanding service and welcoming atmosphere. The food simply didn't match our personal tastes. That said, the restaurant was absolutely packed, so they're clearly doing something right. I would still recommend giving 24 Diner a try because everyone's palate is different, and their unique flavors may be exactly what you're looking for.

The eggs were cooked over well, way over well. Ok. Things happen. The hash was not fresh at all. Really quite soggy. Ok, so guessing it may have been cooked a day or two prior to ordering. Not well prepared, but not the end of the world, right? Here's the thing: there was an unmistakable flavor of rubber and/or plastic. This was the predominant flavor. I simply couldn't eat it. Maybe a wrapper or some other foreign item was inadvertently added. The small dish of watermelon, strawberry and pineapple was ok. This, with tip, was $65.00 just had water to drink. Wonder if they used to be good and have just fallen off, but IMHO not worth it at all.

My beautiful girlfriend, traveling home from Vancouver, had a morning layover in Austin just recently on a weekday, and I got us a reservation to Paperboy East. Compared to the weekends, their schedule was a lot more open. On the weekends it can be nearly impossible to get a spot unless it's a few weeks in advance. We had a reservation at 8 am right when they opened, and when we walked in, we were seated immediately. The place looks like a modern twist on the old-school diners your grandparents love. There's also an upstairs and downstairs patio. Plenty of space! We were sat at one of the two-person tables. To start, I ordered their house drip coffee while my girlfriend got their "Lil Remi," an iced cappuccino with salted caramel. The black coffee was excellent and flavorful, while my girlfriend thought her Lil Remi was like a milkier shaken espresso that she really liked. From their starters, we ordered their Blueberry Lemon Pop Tart to share. I am a sucker for a homemade Pop Tart, and the jam on the inside was extremely fresh, and the icing and crust of the Pop Tart itself was sturdy and full of flavor. For our entrees, I ordered their Texas Hash with added avocado while my girlfriend ordered their famous Paperboy Pancake with chocolate chips as a full breakfast with bacon and two over-hard eggs. It wasn't a long wait at all to get our food. The Texas hash looked great and was presented quite nicely, which is a shame because I immediately proceeded to mash it all together to make sure every bite had a perfect balance of the roasted pork, sweet potatoes, egg, and avocado. It was very filling and substantial, which is great because I needed it to last me up to dinner. The pancake is the star of the show and is worth the order alone. The flying saucer they serve rises like a cake in the oven and is extremely fluffy. She was surprised with how it was a traditional pancake but loved how moist it was for its size. A perfect pancake to her. A perfect pancake to me because she couldn't finish it, so I took it to go and ate the last few bites immediately after dropping her off at the airport. For being an upscale diner in the prime area of Austin, I knew Paperboy was going to be pricey, but I honestly thought that it would crack $100 before tip between the two of us. I was very happy to see it was not even close to that and cost us about $80 with tip. To me, that felt fair for Austin, and I would pay that price any day of the week for a breakfast like we had. I've had a few of the locally owned brunch and breakfast spots in Austin and concur with the masses that this sits strongly at the top of the list. Best pancakes, best atmosphere, and the best times. RIYL: Good vibes served with maple syrup

My biggest issue started before I even got seated. There is a QR code that you're required to use to join the waitlist/queue, but this is not clearly communicated on their website. You essentially have to arrive at the restaurant and figure it out once you're there. For a restaurant that is known for having long waits and high traffic, I feel like this information should be clearly stated online so people can plan accordingly. Once I joined the queue, I was number 43 and ended up waiting about an hour and a half before being seated. I understand that popular restaurants can have long wait times, but the lack of transparency about how the process works made the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. Once inside, the ambiance was actually quite quaint and charming. That said, considering how much traffic this restaurant gets, I was surprised by how limited the space is. I honestly think expanding the property would make a huge difference, although I understand that may not be entirely within their control. One thing I will give them major credit for is the menu. Online, the selection makes it look somewhat limited, but once you're there, they actually have 50+ food options, so there is plenty to choose from. That was definitely a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, my entrée was disappointing. I ordered a shredded beef taco with salsa and substituted a side salad. The beef was extremely tender, but unfortunately, it was also very dry. The salad was another disappointment because the vinaigrette was honestly not good. I don't think I've ever had a vinaigrette that I actively disliked until this meal. Thankfully, my fiancé had a much better experience. He ordered an enchilada and said it was one of the top five enchiladas he's ever had, so clearly there are some standout dishes on the menu. That definitely made me curious about trying something different if I ever return. I also really enjoyed that they offer hibiscus tea. I was very happy to see it on the menu, although I personally think it would be better served on its own rather than incorporated into one of their mixed drinks. The drink itself was just okay, but the hibiscus flavor was great. Overall, I can see why this place has become an Austin staple, but I think the experience could be improved significantly by making the waitlist process much clearer online and by improving the consistency of some of the food. The menu has a lot of potential, and clearly, some dishes are excellent! Unfortunately, mine just wasn't one of them.
