2 out of 5 stars We visited Jing Chuan with a party of five after hearing good things, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing overall. The restaurant is extremely dark inside, although the traditional decor is pretty cool and gives the place some character. Prices were fair, but the service was slow, and our server repeatedly forgot things we asked for throughout the meal. To make matters worse, their credit card machines were down during our visit. The biggest issue was the food. Most of it was extremely greasy. The green onion pancakes were basically grease sponges with almost no flavor. The fried rice wasn't really fried rice at all. It tasted like plain white rice with a few vegetables mixed in and lacked any of the flavor or texture you'd expect. The Szechuan chicken was also disappointing and wasn't something we'd order again. There were a couple of bright spots. The orange chicken was flavorful, and the scallops were cooked well and were probably the best dish we had. Overall, while the prices were reasonable and there were a few good dishes, the overly greasy food, inconsistent quality, forgetful service, and payment issues left us underwhelmed. I wanted to like this place, but based on our experience, I don't see us coming back. Two stars because there were a few positives, but they weren't enough to outweigh the negatives. read more

I had a wonderful experience here! Just so happen to come here the same day they got hit by that truck, which is a shame because they have a well-done, newly renovated exterior as well as a gorgeous interior! The staff were all extremely friendly and conscientious of our needs. They made good recommendations and let us know they could accommodate for certain things on the menu such as the spice level. Everything from the tea to the main course was delightful! I highly recommend the flat bread and lemon chicken dish, they were superb! Definitely can't wait to come back and try something else. read more

I have lived in China for 5 years so generally everyone warns against then eating Chinese food back in America that's understandable however my family wanted to take me there and their online menu looked nice but upon arrival us was mainly full of the Americanized dishes that's okay. But the food we ordered gave us all stomach aches even before leaving so I don't see much of any reason to go there also they had a dish labeled Sichuan but didn't include a single spicy pepper. I ordered a pot of tea but the server refused to provide tea cups for my 3 family members. My recommendation is stick to the Chinese recipes and cook more fresh sauces it's not too much to ask for and people would like it more. This was always the go to white tablecloth Chinese option in Toledo. Gone are the white tablecloths... not that I need them, but it was a nice touch, that is no longer there. also, no longer there is good service. We had a six person table, we didn't order anything crazy. The food came out and sat for almost 10 minutes before we ever got plates. No one wants to eat cold food! The food itself was not great. We had a hot garlic shrimp dish that had a very odd after taste. The spring rolls were oily and mediocre. We sat without drinks forever. We ordered the meal for four and had to ask for serving spoons after we had already asked for plates after our food had already sat forever.... The waitress acted weird about it when we wanted to split the meal for four into two checks, even lay down the middle. It should not have been that complicated. When we got the bill, the bill was incorrect, she did fix it pretty quickly. Start to finish the whole meal was underwhelming. I could've gotten better food from any local takeout Chinese. It did not give the fine dining feeling it used to. It all just looks a little dated and rundown. I doubt I'll be back anytime soon. Toledo has a lot of great Asian food options. We thought it would be nice to sit down and have family meal. We could've saved $60 and about two hours of our time and just gotten takeout or went to a competitor. read more

Jing Chuan has become by favorite Chinese restaurant. Full disclosure, my order is always sweet and sour chicken. Sweet and sour chicken is one of my favorite meals, so I can never bring myself to try something else. That said, I think it's very good (maybe not THE BEST but in the top two) but the value puts it on top. Service here has always been very good and attentive. My only complaint would be the lighting. I'm sure it's to provide some ambiance, but it is soooooo dark in parts of this place, I can barely see. It's not friendly to aging eyes. Luckily I don't need to really read the menu, but it would be nice if they could brighten it up just a bit. read more

Came here on a Sunday around 5:45pm and the place was busy, parking lot was full, there was no waiting though. Very pleasant welcome, and our waitress was phenomenal! Food is absolutely amazing, highly recommend. The place is set up and decorated like a pagoda with bamboo-backed chairs and wooden tables. read more

I can only think of a couple family-style sit-down Chinese diners in town, besides the usual corner take-out Chinese. Don't give me wrong; every American has days when you need to stuff a carton full of chicken lo mein and binge TV, but sometimes you want Chinese food, and just wanna be able to sit down in front of a nice round table for a meal. I feel like JC is one of them although I have yet to sit on a round table there.. I think it might be possible that they get the stick because of its core demographics. Every time I went to sit down--which has been a handful now, the place was packed with mainly white oldtimers. But take into account the town's makeup, I think it makes sense that majority of clientelle would older white families. I certainly have not seen any Asian families outside of mine, nor too many black families. Now, I'm not bringing up the ethnic makeup of its clientelle to be a racist. A people whom have lived in Toledo area all their lives I've talked to about JC have mentioned that a lot of people seem to have a preconceived notion that JC is maybe not a very authentic Chinese restaurant because "only white people" go there, which I can understand. Generally speaking, if you're looking for "authentic" ethnic food, I'd look for a place that is infested with the same ethnic people. So naturally, if you rarely see Chinese people in a Chinese restaurant, some might get skeptical. Here's my take. JC IS in fact, a legit Chinese restaurant with proper Chinese taste. You just need to get the items NOT from their lunch special menu, but the full house menu. Let me elaborate. First time I came was with my wife. We wanted a combination of a "Korean-Chinese" dish (it's a thing!) and an authentic Chinese dish. We ended up ordering a sizzling rice soup as an apetizer, which was great. We also ended up liking the Chinese dish better than the other. So we decided to get full Chinese menu next time around. The next time was even better with two full Chinese dish and an egg drop soup to share. Believe it or not, the ED soup was THE dish that had us fully convinced about JC. I'll be honest that we both had our preconceived expectations of what an egg drop soup was supposed to taste like, and that it would be next to impossible to mess this up. What we didn't realize was how much better it would taste if done right. JC's version was so much better than any others we'd had. I don't mean to set anyone's expectations crazy high here. It's not like EDS is gonna all of a sudden taste like a shark's fin soup or anything. But if you know anything about cooking, and how changing a simplest ingredient like using chicken stock over water can make or break a dish, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was full of flavor!! I will, however warn you that when I ordered a lunch special dish that came with an egg drop soup, it did not taste the same at all! I'm convinced that they cook different versions of it for lunch because of the amount of servings. Anyway, my family have been going back to try different dishes every time and we've so far been very happy. My next adventure is their Peking duck. It's not offered anywhere else in the area that I'm aware of. It's definitely in the more expensive side of the spectrum compared to nearby cities like Columbus, but I'm willing to give it a shot with hopes that maybe their ducks might be bigger, or they would offer duck bone soup like a proper Peking duck place would. I will definitely come back to review when that happens! read more

Even though Jing Chuan is known amongst our friends as some of the best Chinese in the area, we've never made it out. Not for any particular reason, other than the fact that it's just a few blocks off the beaten path and just completely off our radar. That is, until now. And now that we've had our first visit to Jing Chuan, we're already debating what we'll order next. Will it be the giant sharable bowl of hot and sour soup, filled to the brim with pieces of tofu, shrimp, and other interestingly chopped or julienned veggies? Likely yes, we'll order that next time. Or maybe it's the green onion pancake, which can serve as an app or even as a light entree with the above-mentioned soup? Yes, we will order that next time too. How about the hilarious appetizer sampler, with a burning volcano-like flame in the middle, which seems to serve no purpose other than to wow you as you eat the spring rolls and ribs? We're not sure about that one, but the point is, the food here is really really good! Some of the best Chinese (American) we've had in recent memory. And while the atmosphere is an odd mix of some older school 1980s Chinese vibes, mixed with some mildly terrible contemporary finishes and furniture, the staff is SUPER friendly, and the food comes out insanely fast. On our first visit, it took longer to take care of the check than it did to place our order and eat our food. From the signs of the tables entirely full by 7 pm, this spot is popular and well-loved by the locals. We're excited to finally have it in our repertoire, and look forward to becoming regulars as well. read more

If you think you like P.F. Chang.. you need to stop and come to Jing Chuan. Hands down the best Chinese food in the area. The food is excellent and the staff are always helpful and knowledgeable of the dishes. It does have a cozy atmosphere, and the lighting is a little dim, so you may have trouble reading the menu. That being said I would highly recommend some hot and sour soup and pan fried dumplings to go with your meal. You will not be disappointed if you give it a shot. read more

This is my preferred Chinese restaurant in Toledo. I order their sweet and sour chicken and it's always a generous portion served with soup and a chicken wing. The egg drop soup has fresh vegetables in it like celery and tomato that give it a nice flavor and balance. The sweet and sour chicken is moist and crispy and served with a bright red sauce that fits the bill for sweet and sour. One time I ordered an egg roll and found it to be heavy with grease and the vegetables inside were too mushy for my taste. I would not order them again. The service is not quick but any means, but it is acceptable. The restaurant is busy and does a brisk business. Service is brisk but efficient and the food really is good read more

We were there recently and have always felt this as an excellent Chinese Restaurant. We arrived early on a Saturday to celebrate a special occasion. It was very warm inside, as if the air conditioning was not on. When our food arrived we were so hot we had a difficult time wanting to eat the hot food that was served. My suggestion would be if you want to keep customers, make sure the temperature in your restaurant is comfortable for your customers. On a side note, we noticed more vegetables on the dishes we ordered than meat. The food was tasty but we ended up taking it home to sit in air conditioning. read more

It's been some time since I've been to Jing Chuan. I've been a customer since they opened waaaaay back in 1983 (or so). I stopped going there for various reasons, but thought I'd give it another try last Friday. Wow, am I glad I did! Jing Chuan has the best Hunan, Szechuan and Mandarin in Toledo. If you're looking for Cantonese, go somewhere else - they don't do Cantonese very well. I've been told their General Tso's chicken is good, but that's not real Chinese food (seriously, you can't find this dish in mainland China - it's an American dish that's made for Americans...). If you want Hunan beef, Szechuan shrimp/chicken/beef, Basil Chicken (my absolute favorite), this is the place. Their stir-fried garlic chicken is amazing. If you can pop in for lunch, do so. It's the best deal. The restaurant was remodeled during COVID, so it's new, clean, bright and nice. The prices went up, but that's life. Plan on $20-25 bucks for an appetizer and entree per person. Lunch is around $10-12 per person. Great place... read more

One of the few old school Chinese restaurants in Toledo. Still outperforming the newer ones after all these years. If you can get there for lunch it is definitely your best value. All lunches include the most delicious egg drop soup; like no other I've ever had, a light broth with such umami and two chicken wings. Servings are very ample; enough for take home. Some of my favorite entrees include walnut chicken, tofu with vegetables and Mongolian stars. All here full of fresh vegetables and delicious. Don't forget to order a spring roll and scallion pancakes are amazing. A true Toledo Gem with a family staff that will make sure you are satisfied. read more

My friend and I were seating at a table that must've been right by the ac vents. It was very cold. I ordered hot tea and it did not taste like the traditional hot tea. The crab rangoons I ordered tasted sweet? I have never had crab rangoons taste sweet and I was not a fan of them. I also ordered wonton soup which was the best thing I ordered although it did have mushrooms in it. Not a fan of mushrooms. I ordered the almond chicken for my entree and it was nothing like the almond chicken I get anywhere else. Barely any sauce, and it is served to you with loads of onion, green peppers, and mushrooms. One of our long time favorites for Chinese and a long time Toledo restaurant. Service was good and our waitress was very attentive. Soup and appetizers came out quickly. Our entrees were serviced correctly and hot. Jing Chuan decor has that authentic fell but most of all is kept very clean. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

While looking for some soul and comfort food to overcome the cold weather... found this place while yelping... yes, I drove an hour to give this place a try. I stopped by around 2pm on a Sunday and the parking lot was full! Walked in, said table for one and the hostess picked up the American menu and started to lead me to the table... before we left, I asked for the Asian menu (yes, most places have separate Asian Menu, always ask). The hostess stopped, grabbed the Asian menu and I got seated. They gave me the booth seating, which I would not recommend if you are big and tall.... it's hard to get in and out, the table itself had bar at the bottom of the table that made stretching difficult. I already knew what I wanted, but wanted to see what other items they had. For drink, I went with water and tea and for food I went with the following (yeah, I ordered a lot of food for myself): - Sam Sun jjajangmyun/ (Seafood Black Bean Noodles) - Sam Sun Jjampong (Seafood Spicy Noodle Soup) w/o Noodles - Kangpunggi (Dry Braised Chicken (Deboned)) FYI: The do not serve kimchi, yellow radish or sliced Onions Sam Sun jjajangmyun/ - Literally means saefood jja jang noodles. The sauce basically contains seafood. Here at Jian Chung - they use beef, squid and shrimp in their sauce. I was bit surprised to find beef instead of pork, but it was still good. It was not salty (which is good) and it wasn't sweet as well. In terms of flavor, it was bit bland, but decent for midwest. Sam Sun Jjampong (Seafood Spicy Noodle Soup) w/o Noodles - since I ordered black bean noodle, I got this w/o the noodles. Like black bean noodle, this version comes with seafood - they used, shrimp, squid and clams and I also noticed they used beef in this dish as well. Like black bean, pork is typically used. This dish definitely had the flame taste, but they added too much salt/chicken powder as the broth was too salty to eat. Also be careful when eating this dish, as it had lot of clam shell pieces throughout. Kangpunggi (Dry Braised Chicken (Deboned)) - typically the chicken pieces would be like popcorn size, but here its large, think of whole deboned thigh. This dish should be sweet and tangy, but it was more of salty and sour. I understand there's sourness in the dish from the vinegar, but it had no tanginess at all. Overall, their food was decent, had it not been salty, it would have been better. The service was ok (what I expected at Asian restaurant). This place is very popular with non-Asians, as I was the only Asian in the place. Would I drive an hour to try the place again? Most likely not, I mean, I would not go out of my way just to go here to eat. I might stop by enroute to Cleveland when visiting friends, but that's a hard sell. If I did stop by, I'll try the other noodle dishes and their Korean sweet and sour dish, granted the price tag at $40 might hinder me from ordering it. We'll see... happy eating & yelping! read more

Ordered for the first time and had the food delivered. Food was delivered fast. The flaming appetizer was great. I liked the variety. Lemon chicken and broccoli with beef were both delicious. White rice was just as it should be. My only real complaint was the fried rice. It was as white and flavorless as the white rice, with what stemmed to be just a few veggies thrown in. Not worth the $3.50 substitution charge. I will try again in as a dine in customer, but will avoid the fried rice. read more

But I could make a list of mile long first of all how does mayo get into a Chinese menu you never in 1 million years would find mayo in China but you're sneaking it into sauces here ....you should be taken out back. Absolute worst service ever! We waited an hour and a half and had to ask to place our order. People that came after us had already started eating before we even placed our order. Some people in our party of 8 received their food while others had to wait quite a long time. The waitress was very rude. She would put our meals on the table and with an attitude she'd push them across the table to people. She was obviously very irritated about something. I reached my hand out to get the bill and instead of giving it to me she placed it on the table across from me. Not sure why she didn't ask but she put all 8 of us on one bill and then she got upset when we told her that we were not all on the same check. The food portions seemed smaller than usual and they were never big. We're absolutely done with this place. read more

I have ate at several Chinese restaurants in several cities and states. This is my favorite! it's a hidden gem. The service, tea, appetizers and dishes are wonderful. since leaving Central Michigan in 2003 and 6 states later, they are the only other place who makes Mongolian Chicken right!! AAA+.
