    5. Chicken Teriyaki

We got sushi and chicken teriyaki. The food was ready and hot. The staff was nice. The sushi was okay. The chicken teriyaki was not good. It tasted like they boiled the chicken then added some teriyaki sauce later.

Definitely one of my favorite places to grab sushi. If you have at least three people, I recommend going for the party tray. I believe it comes with 2 soups which makes it seem like it's meant for 2 people but it is so much food! The volcano roll is a fan favorite with my family and so we usually order an extra to satisfy everyone but I personally love the sweet potato roll that comes with the tray. The tray also comes with classic spicy tuna and California rolls as well as a couple others. All for under $40! The wait staff in my experience can be a little gruff but not off-putting. Especially given how much I enjoy the food! Recently it seems like the name may have changed to Jing Sushi? Here's hoping it's the same delicious little hole in the wall restaurant I've grown to know and love.

    Party Tray #1 - 6 rolls for $34

DH and I were looking for something new and close by for Friday Night Date Night and remembered Mai Sushi. Tucked away in the alley of the Village Shopping Center, we have walked by plenty of times and have said "we need to try this place". Well, we finally did. They have a pretty extensive menu of rolls and such. DH and decided on the squid salad and seaweed salad to start and the Party Tray #1 for dinner ($34 for 6 different rolls). Both the appetizer salads were delicious - crunchy and full of flavor! DH declared "they make a damned good salad". Yes, sweetie, they sure do. The Party Tray also comes with miso soups, so we had those to enjoy as well. Then the main event arrived. 6 rolls is a LOT of food. The presentation was lovely, including the flaming volcano roll, and we could not wait to dive in. It was as much of a treat for our tastebuds as it was for our eyes. I think my favorite was the Volcano Roll. We tried all of the rolls but it was a lot of food and ended up having to ask for a to-go box as our eyes were obviously bigger than our stomachs. But it meant we had a nice lunch the next day! On the way out, we noticed a delivery guy. So not only is this place convenient for pick up on the way home from work, but they deliver too. I have a feeling DH and I will be dining with Mai Sushi more often.

I'm always looking for great sushi in Richmond, especially delivery during covid! A lot of sushi places don't seem to be delivering right now, and it can be hard to tell which are good. I tried Jing on a whim, and it did not disappoint! The sushi was fresh, perfectly sized, and delicious! I got spicy tuna and eel rolls, my two go-tos, both were great! I ordered through Grubhub, so haven't had any direct contact with Jing staff yet, but look forward to visiting in person once dining is a bit safer!

Never has such a delightful eatery been so aptly named! Trouvaille is a glorious find indeed! Mind you, if you read my reviews you will see I know a bit about good cocktails and better food! So context: I was completely blown away by this little tucked away spot on Lombardy Street in Richmond's glorious Fan neighborhood. To begin: Top shelf alcohol, merged into glorious soothing cocktails expertly blended and presented as swanky as any NYC or SF bar! If you like an expertly blended Manhattan this is the place. Next time the old fashioned or anything frankly on the menu! For dinner: I had the gnocchi with fresh spring peas in a light cream sauce with the kind of tender savory chicken one dreams of. The whole thing was an imaginative yet comforting fusion of Japanese-Italian-American comfort food. Think: deconstructed chicken pot pie! Hubby had the short ribs which melted in my mouth alongside a perfectly crispy yet tender Japanese inspired (Korean?) rice cake next to perfectly unctuous kimchi!! Just amazing! I traveled the world in every bite! Umami perfection. But I skipped telling you about the appetizer of fresh spring salad with arugula, burrata, and just fresh everything. The dressing was a tiny but overpowering but totally tolerable because of the perfect tang and balance of creaminess. So good and the serving was beyond generous! We ordered delicious Homemade... like a truly homemade fresh loaf of bread arrived with perfectly not-too-sweet strawberry (what?) butter!! And save room for dessert! The oh so thin crepe cake with uh-mazing strawberry sauce and sweet (not too) crème was just light and pleasing. Again I could feel/taste the Japanese influence And then! An on the house chocolate pot de crepe had me swooning! This with our Malbec wine was like heaven on earth. Finally? The bill. So freaking reasonable! We spared no expense and had a bottle of wine! Nothing but pleasure here. The bill was a pleasure to pay! And I love thoughtful decor! I am happy to report: The vibe is incredibly cool, too. Think Gothic-minimalism meets the gilded age. Such a glam space but not in the least bit intimidating. I am in LOVE! Don't miss this place. I see Michelin stars in Joe the Chef's future. Mr. James Beard get to Trouvaille if you want to see the best of Richmond! You will not be disappointed.! We will be back for sure. Hope to see you there!

But after being seated, no one came back. We were the only customers in the restaurant. The two employees were sitting just a few tables away, including the person who seated us. After waiting for a while, we assumed ordering must happen through the kiosks by the tables. When we got up to use one, we were told they could take our order instead. It made for a strange first impression. There was an odd smell throughout the restaurant and the restroom smelled especially unpleasant. The food came out fairly quickly. Unfortunately, we found it underwhelming. I ordered the chicken wonton ramen. It was bland, and the wontons reminded me more of something from a frozen meal than something made in-house. My fiancé ordered the tonkotsu ramen and had similar thoughts. Lunch for two ended up costing over $40 after tax and tip, and that was with just water to drink. For the price, we expected more. This is not somewhere we plan to return.
