Love Osaka! Upscale sushi, but honestly more affordable than I'd expect for the quality. We walked in on a Friday night and sat at the bar. They have 2 bars (a cocktail bar and sushi bar) that are both available for walk ups. The espresso martini was fabulous. For food, we split the spicy edamame and 3 rolls - the power roll, LLS, and Jedi. The edamame was so flavorful and not too spicy. Would definitely recommend! All of the sushi rolls were awesome, but our favorite was the power followed by the LLS. The Jedi was a little sweet with the balsamic but still delicious and a fun one to mix it up with. Be very careful with Osaka Sushi. They double-charged -- my bill was only $20, but they ran two transactions, one for $20 and another for $40. Extremely sneaky and dishonest. Thankfully I caught it right away by checking my credit card statement. I've already reported this to the credit card company. Great dinner spot for sushi and Japanese dishes. I would recommend to make reservations especially on a weekend night. It is also a loud environment. The door/ entryway is very narrow and awkward. We also noted lots of take out orders which is a good idea for next time. We started with the Mt. Fuji Shrimp as an appetizer and it was so crispy and delicious that we inhaled it. Osaka is our favorite spot for sushi for multiple reasons. 1. Service is consistently fast, friendly and efficient. 2. The sushi is fresh and the rolls are dynamic. Favorite roll: Poinsettia hands down The only complaint would be that the size of the restaurant is extremely small. Solid choice for some decent sushi. We always enjoy our service, especially when we get Jasmine. She rocks. For the appetizer, we always get the tuna tataki and the truffle Trio. If I could get an app entrée of the truffle Trio, I would certainly do that. But it is pricey for just the app. Jasmine was the first server to suggest keeping my truffle trio plate so that I could dip my sushi in the leftover truffle oil. Genius. For entrées we always enjoy the Jedi roll. They had a special tuna roll that we also ordered which was I think called the blue moon? and it was incredibly fresh and delicious. I actually liked it more than my black Russian, which was good, but didn't feel as cohesive as the special because the fish was all packed in there instead of using some on the inside and the outside of the roll. read more

Osaka is my favorite sushi spot in RVA but on Sat night at 6:15, we waited 45 minutes for an appetizer and our sushi came out about 10 minutes later. The amount of takeout orders outnumbered the dine in orders, which likely backed up the kitchen. For the amount you pay for sushi and service, they should really consider prioritizing those customers who are dining in and maybe limiting takeout. Great sushi! read more

My standards are pretty high for Japanese food. This place missed the mark on everything Japanese with the beer and tea as the exceptions. First the Unagidon did not use sushi rice... so your a sushi restaurant but skimp out on the non Sushi dinners. The eel was not a high quality; it just had a strange taste to it. They added a bunch of pickles as if it was a Curry dish... Just Weird. My Japanese wife had Seafood Udon soup. Which had spinach...Wakame is more seafood than spinach but you checked off the "needs something green" box. . Salmon in the soup was cold which brought the broth temp down to Luke warm and the Udon was the same pre-boiled crap I can get at the grocery store....oh and on top of that it was flavorless. And the biggest atrocity, you have the word Steak on your sign but you offer two non-sushi steak dishes. I got the 12oz Strip because the bigger portion is conducive to share. Seasoning good, sauce good, portion was good. But the quality of the meat was sh*It was probably a Choice steak and $32 for a Choice is robbery. We were willing to pay more because we were celebrating and spent the whole time complaining about meal than anything else. Seriously, I cooked 2 steaks in my Hotel that were better than Chef Hai's professional kitchen. I've also never met a Hai-san in Japan. Stick to the Crab Rangoons. They were delicious. And for those that want to say "don't get a Steak at a Sushi restaurant," if you can't cook a steak what makes you think I am going to let you feed me raw fish. Other than that the place was pretty clean but the huge dead Geisha portrait behind the bar is pretty freaking creepy. read more

This place was fine. I brought my husband here for his birthday. This was our first time. The decor was fine. The seating puts you a little close to other customers. Got the lobster dumplings and the beef spring rolls. They do provide a solid amount of the spring rolls. They were hot, fresh and crispy. Beef was a bit dry. Lobster dumplings didn't have a lot of lobster but the garlic flavor was nice. My husband enjoyed his sushi. The waitresses were very on top of clearing the table. They crammed way too much stuff on it and it didn't go together. The jalapeño sauce was sweet for some reason and gave off a weird smell. The fish also might've been bad? Couldn't really tell between all the random stuff crammed in it and the weird smell might've been from the sauce. Just from this I had to score it lower but the overall vibes and people were good and other menu items were good. Avoid that 10th anniversary roll, though. And overall this place isn't authentic sushi. It's different and can be enjoyed better by people who don't eat a lot of sushi but if you have had a lot of good sushi in your life and know what you like and what's good, stick to what you know. Great sushi and sashimi! Recommended by a friend so I decided to come here for dinner on a weekday and it was popping! Little did I know that they have secret menu items!! They already have a good and wide selection of traditional and fusion rolls, but you can also order the off menu items directly. The one I tried is the "superman roll" with spicy tuna and cream cheese, which I really enjoyed and would recommend!! We also got the dragon roll which was your classic avocado and eel combo. What can I say. I was very disappointed in my experience tonight (10/25). While the food was delicious it took FOREVER to come out. We were here for a birthday party and the host made reservations for 14. We arrived at 7pm, ordered around 7:30/7:45 and did not get food until 9:15pm. When we spoke with the manager about the wait he said "I understand, while this is no excuse, this is why we don't like big parties" His tone was not rude but the statement was tone deaf. We called ahead to make reservations so if they could not accommodate a large party they should have said that. I have dined at Osaka more times than I can remember and this was the worst experience I've had in terms of service. I will be back for the food, but I hope the next time the service and wait time is back to the level of excellence I am accustomed to. read more

We had Starburst roll, Manhattan roll, tuna roll, salmon roll and eel roll. My husband loves the salmon roll. I like the Manhattan roll and eel roll. Sorry no pictures! Service was good, they were super busy when we went, Saturday night. I recommend to have reservations to avoid waiting. Our table was ready when we got there. Overall, I will go back and will try to chefs entree. A friend an I had dinner there last night.The appetizers were descent and the soups were meh ok......But i noticed in my Water glass, after drinking from it, had some kind of visible build up inside. It was on both sides of the glass and you could scrape with a chopstick and feel it (bottom half of glass inside) , Got it replaced. The real problem was the main course i ordered, a 8 ounce Fillet Mignon. What i got was a end butt roast piece with chain and fat still on it with MAYBE 2 1/2 ounce of center cut fillet.....it was also over cooked. We ate here last night and the food was not all that great. I order the New York Strip. I ordered it medium and it came out well done. It had no seasoning on it and dry. They re-cooked a new steak which was okay on the cook however, there was no seasoning on it and it was tasteless. On the other hand the sushi was good. The manager is not very personable and has a dry personality. He appears that it is a bother working there or dealing with customers. He brought me the new steak and did not apologize for my experience, just left the steak and look at me to see what my reaction was with the new steak. I think they should take steak off of the name and focus on what they do best which is sushi. Lastly, our waitress was Carol and she was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! She was the best part of the visit! We came here for happy hour. The bar was full, so they sat us at a table. After we had sat down, they told us that the happy hour menu was only for people sitting at the bar - even though the bar was completely full and there was no room - but that we could still get happy hour drinks. We got one glass of wine at happy hour prices for $5. Went to get a second glass of wine after happy hour ended, and our server told us it would be full price. We agreed, thinking it wasn't a big deal and we might have to pay an extra few bucks. We get the check and it's $18. A $5 glass of wine 10 minutes earlier turned into an $18 glass. Looked on their menu and there isn't even a single glass of wine listed for more than $13. I walked out of there feeling like Osaka baited us with a good deal and screwed us over on our bill. Our server was really nice and felt awful that we came there for happy hour and ended up paying way more than what we thought we were going to. The server stood out. I should have gotten her name because she was efficient, professional and caring. I ordered the steak box. The meat was a little chewy but it was cooked as I requested. I truly loved everything about this place. Our first time visiting and we will definitely be back. All the food was amazing. Cannot recommend enough the beef spring rolls and the spicy dumplings. The people next to us at the bar ordered the lobster dumplings and they were huge. The sauce in the dumplings was phenomenal. The blue oyster cult sushi roll was unique and extremely tasty. I really like this place! It is definitely a step up in terms of ambiance versus other sushi places in the area. I haven't been here in a while, but I do remember how much I enjoyed the roll I got over a year ago and how flavorful it was. I'm pregnant so unfortunately had to stick to vegetable and cooked rolls. I was feeling frugal so I got the Vegetable Maki combo. It was $13, came with a miso soup and ginger salad, a seaweed roll, cucumber avocado roll, and half futomaki. I wasn't exactly sure what futomaki was, but it was good! There was sweet tofu skin, avocado, and I think pickled carrots, beets, and radish? I'm not sure. I thought everything I had was great. The vegetables in the futomaki were a bit TOO crunchy, making the roll hard to eat. Also, I wish I would've asked to substitute something else for the seaweed roll. Not that anything was wrong with it, but I think it's just not for me. My friends' fish rolls (pictured) were HUGE! See the tuna and spicy tuna roll. I mean, that's a lot of fish. Which is great, especially for a 6 piece roll. But, I've literally never seen sushi rolled out that big before! The spicy tuna looked weird to me, but I'm unsure the exact way you make it so I can't really say it was right or wrong. The tuna looked so fresh and bright magenta. My friend's Friday roll she said was really good. Again, my rolls were more normal sized, but theirs were all really big! I'm not sure if this is the norm, or if there are some newer sushi chefs behind the counter.
