My friends and I decided to stop by Sumo Sushi Express for lunch. Their lunch menu is served from 12:00-3:00pm and has affordable prices for sushi. While there is seating inside, it's more of a takeout restaurant. We ordered five different rolls and waited a bit. You order up front and wait until your order is ready. Everything comes in to go containers, so even if you dine-in it's still in takeout form. The woman working that cashier was kind. We got a tuna avocado roll, a salmon avocado roll, the Richmond roll, the dragon roll, and a sweet potato roll. These were huge portions. We still had some leftovers and we were three people. We enjoyed our rolls. My friend works nearby and was happy to learn about a new to her sushi spot from Yelp. This sushi spot if a bit farther from me, so I feel like I'd return for the lunch prices if I was nearby. read more

This place featured some of the smallest sushi l've seen in a long time. The role was the size of a soda bottle cap. And that was the bigger cuts. Nothing was particularly good, just basic normal sushi you find anywhere else. And the lunch special that runs to 3 o'clock according to the sign posted, apparently ends at 2:30 when I arrived. I thought this was better long ago, but apparently cost cutting and whatever else has set in. $35 for two itty-bitty rolls and a soda was extreme for what I got. Time to go somewhere else. read more

For being in a strip mall, this mom and pop sushi place is a convinient option for some decent takeout sushi. Portions are large and the quality is decent. Standouts were the salmon nigiri and volcano roll. The tuna maki roll was decent but the tuna was chopped up, not whole pieces of fish. Gyoza was delicious and miso soup was just ok. Talk about a hole in the wall! I've seen this spot several times on my searches and can't belive it took me so long to finally order from them. They're located in a small strip by Buffalo Wings and it is my go to for whenever I'm craving sushi. I called in my order (9 items) and was told to pick up within 20 mins (very quick to be completely honest). I actually arrived in 15 mins and was told that it was already ready for pick up. Very impressive with the service. The buns were not warmed up because the cook/owner told us that it was best served when microwaved for 30 secs before eating. I really appreciated the info and no serving it hot when I arrived. It would've been cold by the time I got home too. Fantastic service. Delicious food. Beautiful presentation. I was driving through Virginia on vacation when I suddenly craved sushi, so I found this place through Yelp. For such a highly rated restaurant, I expected an elaborate restaurant setup. NOPE. If it weren't for Yelp, I'd surely miss this place! Despite the appearance of the restaurant, the sushi here is fantastic. My entire meal ran just a bit over $30, which is a bargain for the quality of ingredients that they use. For example, my favorite roll was the Alaskan Roll, which came topped with a hefty amount of real snow crab meat! As for the service, it's somewhat on the slow side. This sushi restaurant is well worth the 5 stars! I have lived in California, Alaska, and the east coast, and this is some of the best sushi I have had. The rolls are larger than most sushi restaurants and they come with 10 pieces in each roll. The sushi rolls are well dressed, they taste amazing, and the price is great! I check out Sumo after seeing the Wednesday specials on Yelp. Thanks Yelp! I had the spicy California roll (10 pieces) and the crunchy shrimp roll (6 pieces). I ordered and waited about 20 minutes while my food was prepared. The Wednesday special is automatically give to you to-go in a plastic bag with soy sauce. Grab chopsticks on your way out and you're good to go! It was a lot of food and very fresh. I couldn't finish it all so I had the Spicy California for lunch the next day. It held up really well. Forget anything and everything you may have ever experienced at any other strip mall sushi spot. This is a legit sushi spot! They get all of the stars for being 1)super friendly and down to earth 2) very clean 3)having amazing sushi 4) being humble and 5) all of the above! I was running work errands during the lunch hour on a Wednesday and needed a quick bite. Of course, I turned to Yelp for nearby finds and a spot that had such good reviews (in an area that has such blah reviews may i add), so had to try it. I saw someone's tip about Wednesday specials, so yes, why not! When I walked in the owners greeted me with big smiles and were talking to other guests. One of the guest said alright see you next week, and my ears rang out like bingo, this must be the hot spot! Sushi is on special indeed on Wednesdays, so it's the premier items in the case. The owner was making the sushi right on the spot, so even though it was cased, you knew it was still fresh. Sushi was ahhmazing! I had zero intention of dining in, but it was so clean I decided why not. And, sushi isn't the most favorable car lunch dish haha. I also ordered miso soup, which was tasty too. The owners chatted with me while I dined and asked how was the food and were pleased that I was happy with my meal. I left there like omg can't wait to go back...so told my bf and took him there that night to try it (and he didn't share, darn). We went about an hour before close and the case with specials only had about 5 trays left, and not as much selection. So, easy to tell they had a busy day, because it's delish. I came on a Wednesday for 4.99 select sushi rolls around 4:45pm and I was the only person inside. It took 2 minutes for me to get my sushi and be on my way! The rolls have a great 'inside goodies' to rice ratio, and taste amazing. I came here with my parents and my daughter, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. My father was a bit disappointed with his Sashimi, since the portions were not nearly as generous as Sushi in his recent trip to Seattle. However, I thought the Sashimi was pretty generous for RVA standards. My daughter really enjoyed the gyoza, California roll and miso soup. I would definitely come again. There is a wait here of course because the sushi being made is by two people. The woman took the order and then assisted the sushi chef. Many of the rolls are raw but but there are some items for those who prefer not too. The dumplings that my husband ordered were microwaved. The 2 sushi rolls that I ordered were not great.
