So I would really give this a 4.5 star rating but since that's not an option and this Jinya is at a 4 star average rating I felt 5 stars would bring it closer to what I feel it should be at. I've eaten at the midtown location, loved it, but hate all of the traffic, parking, and smells that come with a trip to that area. In comparison, the environment is definitely better here. Great parking and not as busy(I actually got to sit at a booth! Yay for elbow room!!). I had the tontsui(spelling is off, sorry) black and shared a gyoza and salad combo, and edamame. The fiance's ramen was the same but spicy. Gyoza and salad - both a 5/5. I love how fresh their gyoza tastes, better than most places where the wrapper is a little too thick. The fat girl in me wishes they gave more pieces, but the logical side knows that they give an appropriate amount. I've seen other reviewers that don't like the ginger dressing on the salad. I have to disagree with them; I love a non-creamy ginger dressing, and this one is deliciously balanced with a strong kick of ginger and radish flavors. Edamame - 3/5. Similar to the other location, I can tell their edamame is just a reheated prepackaged edamame. I've bought the birdseye brand from kroger and it tastes the same, being slightly soft. For my ramen, I would give it a 4.5/5. I think that this was the only meal item that differed from the midtown location slightly. Perhaps it's because this location is newer but I thought the seasonings were a bit overbearing. It wasn't bad but not as good as the other locations. My fiancé was slightly disappointed in his spicy version. They forgot to add the spicy stuff in but told the waiter he would just add it in with the hot paste they had at the table. The flavor ended up tasting really off. I'm not rating this one since I didn't actually try it, but in case you like your ramen spicy and they forget to make it spicy, send it back instead of going the DIY method. Overall, I would still go to this location over the midtown jinya. read more

The Best things to order here are Tonkotsu Black & Crispy Chicken. This is possibly the second best Tonkotsu bowl I ever had after the Hide-Chan of Akasaka, Japan! Being in the US, I'm quite certain they don't have the access to all the ingredients that they do over there in Tokyo, but JINYA somehow managed to make it work and it tastes better than most Ramen bars in US. Interior is great, ambience is spot on and the staff is very friendly! (My only gripes are lack of buckwheat soba & sake selections. Maybe you guys can work on that in future.) The ramen was pretty good, if you just want ramen come here. The small plates were underwhelming, I love to get a bunch of apps then end with ramen. The apps were a let down. We ordered gyozas which were super greasy, the server dropped two of them when delivering the plate so she was getting f more made, no big deal, but the were ice cold and undercooked when the replacements arrived. I couldn't eat those. The pork bun was eh. The bun was nice but the pork was all fat, hard to swallow. But the ramen was good which is what most people come here for. This was an interesting weekend for me when I visited the 2nd and 3rd locations (for the first time) of some well-known, well-respected Houston restaurant chains. I happened to be in the Katy area and drove right by this 3rd location of JINYA, and made it a point to stop back by for lunch after my appointment. When I came back, I was thinking the decor and style might be similar to the one in midtown, and I was right. It's upscale-looking interior is not quite as fancy, but definitely has the bar area and open kitchens as the focal points. I was seated right away at a side table and already knew what I wanted, even though I briefly reviewed the "Chef's Special" ramen which they change up on a quarterly basis. I still went with the tried and true Tonkatsu Black. This is a great ramen for garlic and onion lovers; it's really flavorful! I love spicy food, but when it comes to ramen, I want to taste the pork and broth, so I don't order any additional chili paste from the kitchen. They have the labeled sauces for additional seasoning on the table and that is usually fine for my tastes. I do add the fresh garlic. Just ask and they bring out a press and jar of several peeled garlic cloves sitting on a saucer and you just go to town and press as many as you like. I also tried their crispy fried chicken (5pc), which comes with a dipping sauce. The chicken was excellent and very juicy! My server did not give his best performance, since he initially forgot to bring out my fresh garlic, he never refilled my water, and he didn't charge me happy hour pricing for my crispy chicken, even though I came during happy hour. When I asked, he tried to claim the time was not right, even though I arrived at 330, ordered the dish and he rang me up by 4pm, still well within their happy hour window. SMH, the customer is always right!! He also kept pacing back and forth in front of my table, never actually reaching out and asking if I needed anything, so I'm not sure what the purpose of that was. Regardless, he should have been paying attention to every need of a customer (e.g., refilling their drink), not just whether they want to order something else, or get the check. All in all, I will keep returning to JINYA even if it's out of the way. I'll probably try the Clear Lake location next. read more

This place is amazing! I have ordered the vegan spicy tofu ramen and that taste was addictively excellent and delicious!!! I am more than excited to see and taste those yummy Japanese vegan ramen! I've been to the downtown location before and honestly after checking out both locations, I prefer going to this one in Katy only because it seats more people. If you're looking for a ramen place where you can fit a party of 6 or more, then I'd recommend this location. The wait time was not long. I went last night (Friday) around 7pm and I only had to wait for about 5 minutes. Now about their food, I order the spicy chicken ramen. I even ordered my ramen at the "hot" level but sadly it wasn't hot enough for me. I had to add a lot more hot sauce into my broth. But otherwise, I still enjoyed it because I was looking for comfort food. Their broth is thick but not overboard unlike some other ramen places I've been to. I do prefer their thin noodles rather than their thick. You can add other options like a seasoned egg to go with the ramen for only $1-$2. All I can say is...FINALLY!!! After waiting for several months and leaving empty-handed this past Monday (they were having Friends & Family soft opening), I was so very excited that I was able to finally go to the grand opening of Jinya in Katy! I arrived at precisely 11 AM, for the fear that there may be a long line (those of you that have been to the Midtown location, you feel me). Upon entering, the familiar shouting of some Japanese sentence indicated that I was in the right place. I was seated at the ramen bar, and I must say the ambiance was very nice! It's a bit brighter than the Midtown location, and it is quite spacious, although I can imagine the restaurant getting super packed, since it was 90% occupied by 11:30 AM. Anyways, to the food! I ordered the famous Jinya Bun, which was soft and pillowy on the outside, with super tender pork on the inside along with some delicious condiments; I was impressed. For the main event, I ordered the Sproutin' Up Ramen, a personal favorite. It was very, very delicious as usual; I did find the chashu to be more tender than the Midtown location, while the brussels sprouts were less charred (I prefer a little more charred, but that's a personal preference). I was not disappointed at all, this location was definitely up to the usual Jinya standards. Lastly, compared to the Midtown Jinya, this location has A LOT more parking, plus a new boba shop right next to it (Kravin'), so I'm really pleased. Went here on a Saturday night at around 8pm with one other person and we were seated right away. At the expense of sounding like an old man, the ambience is very loud and I had a hard time understanding to my friend who was sitting across from me. Different from the Midtown location, the space is larger and brighter, but they've installed a big flatscreen television that was loud and distracting. My friend ordered the SPICY CHICKEN RAMEN and I ordered a small CHICKEN CHASHU bowl. The waiter made it sound like it would only be the size of a rice bowl but the portion was more than enough to fill my stomach - perfect if you don't want to be weighed down by the heaviness of the ramen. I've had the chicken chashu bowl before at the Midtown location and I absolutely loooooved it, but it was more satisfying than the one I had here at the Katy location. They skimped on the sauce for the bowl and the chicken didn't have much flavor to it. Then again, this could've been my mistake for ordering a chicken rice bowl at a ramen restaurant, but it still felt disappointing. The waiter accidentally dropped one of the toast and another full fresh order was brought to us on the house! Great food and service! I got the black tonkotsu ramen. It was a perfect blend of noodles, meat, eggs and seaweed. The egg was soft boiled, creamy, and delicious. Even when I was done with the meat, I could still eat the noodles with the seaweed or veggies. The noodles were cooked just right, with the perfect amount of chewiness. The soup was flavorful too. I'm quite picky when it comes to Asian cuisine, since I had amazing ramen in Asia and Vancouver, I can't say this is the best ramen ever. Can I just say I'm super happy that Jinya opened a location in Katy?! knowing the quality of Jinya it's nice to have quality ramen without having to drive halfway across town to get it. Unlike the Houston midtown location, this jinya has a spacious layout (with lovely outdoor seating as well, weather permitting) and plenty of parking. Short wait time. I think even during the busiest hours, the longest I've ever experienced was 15-20 mins. Friendly customer service. The ramen to get: Tonkotsu black!! Even when I've tried the other ramen on the menu, I always find myself wanting to go back to this particular item. Something about that black garlic oil that marries well with the pork chasu, pork broth and seasoned egg. That being said, I havnt had a ramen there that I didn't like. There are a good variety--get your choice from spicy, garlic heavy, vegetable, chicken etc that I'm sure you will find one suited to your ramen tastes. Non ramen things to get: -rice bowls are delicious and filling (I lean torward the pork chasu and the beef sukiyaki) -jinya bun: price comparable to other baos sold at other places. I like the texture of the bao and the flavors of the slow braised pork chasu inside of it. DONT FORGET ABOUT HAPPY HOUR!
