Their bread is really good, but depending on how the baker is feeling that day. I have seen the burned bread, oddly twisted bread, super small bread, super chunky bread, and the most popular by far is the hot dog bun. Mad moms in minivans come load up on the hot dog bun before picking up their kids from school, so the hdb is gone in a flash. Their breads and cakes are pricey but it is pretty good...not as good as 85 degree (made with banned softening agent from taiwan). I will still take my chances and go for the breads at JJ Bakery. read more

They should start hiring people with better attitude and better customer service. The pastries are delicious, but the service is not a very pleasant. First time in the store, i grabbed a rice roll and ready to pay, the place didn't have any sign indicating no credit card payment less than $5. I pulled out my credit card and the young lady said I can't use card payment. I said, there is no sign saying there is a policy. She didn't even looked at me, was staring straight at air and said, "That's our store policy." with monotone voice. That's totally fine, i grab another item so total sums up above $5 and swipe my card. A generous comment, I suggest to the girl, it's better to have a sign so customer can be prepared. She finally turned her head and stared at me with her "WTF do you want" face, no words spoken. Horrible first time experience...just horrible. Could at least say something like, "thanks, we will consider your suggestion." There was another time, around 5:30pm, not a so rush hour time. I was planning to get a piece of their chocolate cake. The dude behind the counter was talking to another employee and giggling the whole time. He didn't even hear me....I was like whatever and left. Sad to say this JJ bakery has really gone down hill. Used to come here pretty frequently but the pastry quality is so poor. The breads are very dense, tough and the overall texture is off. Had a Japanese pancake with red bean and it was so bland. My taro bun was extremely hard to chew through. The packaged steamed buns are VERY chewy. My go to Asian bakery in this area for sure! I come here every single time after finishing dim sum across the parking lot at din tai fung. That means I've been here at least a dozen times over the last 5 or so years. The place always delivers! Although I seem to recall there used to be a few small tables inside so that I could relax and enjoy my treat inside for the 5 minutes it takes to gobble them down. On yesterday's visit I had to skulk back to my car so that I could sit down for some immediate gratification as I munched my mochi treat. I'm sure I pissed people off that wanted me to leave so that they could park, but I ignored them as I leisurely enjoyed my treat, comfortably seated in my peaceful air conditioned car. I was in my own little happy world for a moment. And then, it was back to the LA freeway scene when I was done 5 minutes later. I always get the mochi covered strawberry short cake. A wonderfully not too sweet fluffy strawberry shortcake with lightly sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries on the inside covered in a nice tender skin of mochi on the outside. It looks funny and not so special from the case but trust me there is a tasty fresh light surprise on the inside. I've tried several of the breakfast pastries here as well and they did not disappoint! I've not tried the whole cakes so I can't speak to those. All in all I plan to return to this bakery in the future after every visit to Din Tai Fung across the parking lot. This JJ location serves breakfast and has a little seating area when you enter to your left to enjoy your breakfast in the mornings! I love it! Came by the place to pick up some slices of cake to take home to mommy yesterday and I hadn't been at this location in a longggggg time, so I was overjoyed to see how it's been renovated! I knew that they served breakfast for a while, but I always thought it was just to-go, I didn't know they redid the interior so people can enjoy it inside the store! I was craving some Asian pastries so I yelped (duh) and dropped by the closest one on my way to my boyfriend's house. Imagine my surprise when I found myself in Life Plaza. Although I didn't recognize the name, turns out, I've definitely been here before with my parents. But anyway. When I picked my stuff and brought it to the cashier, he greeted me with, "Tian qi hao ma?" I said "Mm." He rung me up and said "Liu kuai san mao -- Six thirty-five." Like he decided half way through that I wasn't understanding his Chinese. So I give him my money, get my change ("Eleven sixty-five is your change, thank you") and bust out of there. THE STUPID PART IS THAT as Americanized as I am, I still understand conversational Chinese and I totally understood that he was asking me about the weather BUT I JUST SPACED OUT AND I DON'T KNOW WHY. AND NOW I FEEL BAD because I'm like a shame to my culture or something and I could have just said "It's hot" and there wouldn't have been any problem or introspection of self culture or anything but I didn't and I'm going crazy so I decided to yelp about it. :( I'm a sad soul, or something. PS. $6.35 got me a mushroom bread, a big bag of mini croissants, a pineapple bread, a shredded pork cheese bread, a "cake danish," and two soft cookies. I love Asian bakeries. This one here is four stars instead of five because although their selection is GINORMOUS, they didn't have jalepeno cheese bread (at the time). And I don't know why they put corn on everything. Like others here, I too have experienced JJ's rudeness and lack of courtesy. We ordered and prepaid for a boatload of stuff (for a party). When picking up, we were treated as though we were somehow running trying to run a scam on them or rip them off. They kept going over the receipt as though it were forged. I mean, give me a break. It ain't a fake receipt- how often do you have a mountain of crap premade for a specific pickup time? Actually, I don't think they thought it was fake. It was part of the famous JJ "you're lucky to get our baked items" crap attitude. JJ is not the only Chinese bakery in San Gabriel Valley, not sure why they act as though they were. Haven't been back since, and unlikely to do so. 85C clearly has better products, yet they have excellent customer service, and is quite friendly. And 85C has long lines and 1 hour waits-- hmmm... go figure! Customer service + good products == success. I had their pineapple cakes, which are SO MUCH better than the ones you get at normal grocery stores... I also like their buttermilk pineapple bun... and a bunch more... The next layer was cream and the middle was a flaky, sweet cylinder of Yum!! Never tasted anything like it. There is a wide variety of sweets here. All individually wrapped and ready to eat. The cakes are decorated so beautifully you would feel bad cutting into them. The only downside is that there are a ton of people in the store at any given time of day. We used JJ Bakery for 2 large sheet cakes and 3 small decorative for our wedding as a budget option. Service was prompt, if a little disorganized. They required us to put in the order rather closer to the wedding date than we would have preferred (something like 2 weeks), and it was all taken down by paper and then just stashed in a drawer. Nevertheless, no problems were had. The cakes were delicious and catered well to our very Chinese demographic. All of them were packaged securely and we live in comfort knowing that on our anniversary, we'll be able to go back and get the exact same flavors and get exactly what we want. As an amateur baking enthusiast I have come to appreciate the clean ingredient lists with few additives, all flavored more or less naturally. The chiffon cakes are astonishingly consistent and light and airy, and such a cake is the base for most of their cakes! Some of the more complicated mousse-cake-mochi combos can be a little sweet, but other than that it caters to my light flavor loving self perfectly. read more

I grew up eating bread from this bakery! Whenever I come here, it's difficult not to go crazy and put everything on my tray in this carb-heaven. It's a bit pricier than other Asian bakeries but they have good quality stuff. I love the pineapple bun, red bean bun with mochi, custard bread, and other classics like the pork sung bun. When I see a bakery that tons of fellow Asians are walking in and out of, I have to check it out! We had a fab Sunday lunch next door at Kai Ramen, and I needed something sweet for breakfast. It was my first time there, so I did a complete walkthrough just to check out all the goodies. Settled on a Garlic Stick, Pineapple Bun, Cheese Mochi Bun, Cheese Cake Stick, and 2 massive Taiwanese Egg Tarts. Boy was I pleasantly surprised how delicious everything has been, especially the Cheese Mochi Bun which I nuked for about 15 secs and had it w/my morning coffee! Omgosh it oozed out the most amazing buttery, cheesy, mochi flavors and I will definitely get more next time I go!! Also, I love the massiveness of the egg tart, and it's not overly sweet. Just like how most Asians like their desserts--not too sweet! Besides 85C Degrees, this will be my other go-to Taiwanese bakery! Finding a good bakery isn't that hard, because in my opinion, many serve the same varieties of products. What's difficult is knowing when they put out their fresh fare, because let's face it, if it's been out for a couple of hours, chances are you're going to enjoy it a lot less. With that said, going to a bakery later in the afternoon is kind of pointless, unless you want sub-par snacks. It's always a good idea to go in the morning or at noon if possible. Anyways, on to what's important: the food. I'm a carnivore, so anything with meat I'll eat. Hot dog in a bun (or whatever Asians call it), bacon and ham cheese roll, bbq pork (when it's available) were all good. See why it's important for it to be fresh? You don't want to be eating meat that's been sitting out for hours. JJ is good with serving things fresh, but more often than not, ppl snatch them up fairly quickly so it's not a problem. The variety is decent as well, so I decided to try this walnut looking pastry. Not so smart. The bread (doughy in texture) was a little chewy and hard to bite into while the inside contained a pseudo-paste walnut mixture that was a little difficult to eat. I'm sure it's just a hiccup in their wide range of other tasty goods, but I'm afraid it stood out rather glaringly. I haven't tried any of their "real" cakes (or mooncakes), but I did enjoy their slice of NY cheesecake. I'm no cheesecake expert but I know what tastes good. Fluffy and not overbearing. For $2 +, it might be a bit pricey, but to each his/her own. To the right of the store there are refrigerated sponge cakes and sandwiches I have yet to try. They do look moist and fresh. Parking can be crowded, especially with Din Tai Fung nearby, but there is a rear parking lot that usually has enough vacant spots. They speak Cantonese and Mandarin (take your pick) and of course, English. Overall, a more sophisticated bakery well worth going to. read more

We must have come at just the right time because almost everything was fresh out out of the oven!!! Basically we compared squeezing and touching the pastries to soft boobs.. why go to a strip club when you can touch AND eat? The scene was something akin to piranha smelling blood in the water and the ensuing bloodbath frenzy of squeezing, touching, snatching, and eating of soft, flaky, warm pastries here. I LOVE JJ Bakery! I've been getting baked goods here from when they first opened and I was still... young. Since then, they've opened a lot of other locations, and remodeled this particular one. Now there's a seating area! They really just have a lot of yummy options for breakfast, lunch, and dessert for a really good deal. The bread is always fresh and tasty. My favorite thing to get is the egg salad sandwich and green tea. Such a perfect combination. Bought my graduation cake here and it was tasty! I have only tried the usual white cake with fruit on top from asian bakeries, so this time I decided to be daring and try a chocolate cake. I was not disappointed! I believe the name was "Sahara Chocolate Mousse" (not sure why lol). The plaza that JJ is located in is the same one as the second location of Din Tai Fung (not the main one, the other one). That being said it can be very difficult to find parking here, but we were lucky and parked in the 20 minute spot since we were just picking up a cake. When we walked in it was PACKED with people! I was kind of caught off guard but I shouldn't have been since it was around lunchtime on a Saturday. There are two registers and the lady at the one on the left said since we were just getting a cake we didn't have to wait in the long bread line and could just tell her which one we wanted. I pointed it out and she put it in a very pretty purple box that even had handles built in. They also provided a serving utensil and candles. Awesome! Granted it was an expensive cake ($32) but boy was it worth it. The mousse was deliciously light and paired well with the chocolate cake that was perfectly sweetened. There were even chunks of raspberry jelly layered inside which was surprising but yummy! The fruit on top was fresh and overall it was an awesome cake! I'll definitely be back when I need to buy a cake and I'd also like to try some of their breads that everyone was lining up for =D read more

Ugh stupid Yelp just erased my review, so annoying. Anyway, I think JJ the usual Taiwanese bakery with the usual assortment of buns and cakes, pineapple and hot dog buns are in abundance. They have the usual taro cakes, egg tarts, and swiss rolls with the light whipped frosting commonly found at most Asian bakeries. They're all good, but the prices aren't phenomenal and I don't find any of those items to be particularly better than most other places, but it's still good and it's still close. But! Like other places there are some items that make it worth coming here and give it that start boost. The tuna sandwiches and the refrigerated mochi cakes. The tuna sandwich is cheap and so tasty, it has thinly sliced cucumbers and a thin layer of egg omelet with seasoned tuna salad (I love white pepper in my tuna, so yum). The pastries seem to stay good longer, I'm not sure why that is but they're still soft and supple the day after I stock up on i-can-eat-you-in-the- car snacks. The creme de la creme of all items that I've had is the refrigerated mochis they have in the glass case. I am almost thinking of boosting it up to 5 stars just for one of them. I ordered the strawberry since it was strawberry season and it was good, it's a thin layer of vanilla cake, sliced strawberries and whipped cream wrapped up in a thin layer of soft mochi. That was pretty good, and it was the last one left so I thought it would be the best out of the two I got. I was wrong, the green tea mochi cake blew my mind. It was SO GOOD and so abundant it made me think the world didn't know about its secret deliciousness. It was a thin layer of green tea cake, a layer of red bean, and green tea mousse with a konjac jelly topping. The whole thing was wrapped in super soft mochi skin that practically melted in your mouth. The whole dessert was an explosion of complementing textures and flavors without being overly sweet. I easily ate the whole thing without stopping, and they're massive. Get the green tea mochi if you love mochi, green tea, and red bean, best $3 spent at that bakery...ever. read more

I rushing to go to get some cakes yesterday it was late at night. Ordered a strawberry/vanilla cake but the majority of the cakes looked the same. Well the ones that were left. But when i took it to go it wasn't the cake i had originally wanted off the label/ordered =(. I wanted strawberry vanilla but it ended up being strawberry chocolate. Their cakes aren't dry it was really good still but i was upset i didn't get a chance to sink my teeth into the cake i wanted to eat at my gf's birthday. But their deserts are overall yummie.
