Seating is limited and parking is a nightmare depending on what time you go. It had a clean feeling on the inside and I like that they moved their refrigerator goods in a normal fridge than what they had before. I was shocked I had not reviewed jj poke, it was my comfort meal throughout college and my favorite restaurant in Oakland. I have been here countless times and then some and have had a 5 star rating every time. This is a small shop with very limiting seating and a poke pre set bowl menu with a more popular pick your own poke bowl option. They have multiple bases, proteins, toppings, and sauces to choose from and I've always thought their prices were so reasonable for the amount of food you receive. The fish is always fresh and on par with the nice sushi restaurants in the area. Personally? I go for the 2 scoops of salmon sashimi with sushi rice, jj ponzu, seaweed salad edamame, pineapple, carrots, scallions, corn, shredded nori, and garlic crisp. So many ingredients in the prepared ingredient bowls that are so good for gut health and I loved that. I like how welcoming into the Pitt campus community (my alma mater x2) the business is. Our latest visit consisted of a simple spicy salmon poke bowl, the yasai bowl and baby octopus salad. As simple as the spicy salmon was I love that it wasn't overly sauced, the rice was fluffy and fresh and the garnish with green onions and masago was perfect. The Yasai bowl is their vegetarian option which was completely filled to the top with a colorful variety of fresh vegetables. It was incredibly filling and tasty. Now I understand quite a few people don't like the idea of octopus but definitely give this a try. Crunchy, sweet and salty, and light all from the first bite. My order usually consists of three scoops of meat: 2 spicy salmon, and 1 spicy tuna. A mix of zucchini noodles and rice for the base, topped with pineapple, wasabi, nori, ginger, and a little curnch on top! This bowl is absolutely unreal, and always fills me up! The ingredients tasted fresh - from the rice to the toppings to the fish. You get a good variety of toppings, even if the pre-chosen options. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount that came in the bowl. It lasted me almost 2 meals. Only thing I was disappointed in was that my fish/tuna wasn't cut well. My tuna pieces were not fully cut so multiple pieces were still connected together by a thin piece of tuna that I had to cut/chew off. I got the classic black tea boba and was happy with the flavor. I custom ordered my poke bowl which usually turns out well, but the toppings and flavors were bland. Maybe, I should've picked a signature bowl but I didn't want to pay $13-15 for one. For one scoop of protein, it is $8.95 so the prices are reasonable! They also have Taiwanese bubble tea which seemed very popular to the current customers. The seating is quite limited too. If I could give JJ 10 stars I would. I had poké once before moving to PGH and thought it was pretty good, so I was excited to try it here and lord...I think I may have paid for this business's rent for the rest of 2023. Longest wait was 45 min, fastest was 33! And I know all that time was drive time - they are FAST to make your food so it is super fresh. Second, I usually go for the BYOB and do the 2 scoop with all the delicious mix ins. I always do salmon and tuna, and it is always incredibly delicious. I also usually do some asado, they're different types of seaweed, and other fresh vegetables. When I say every single bowl I eat is amazing, I mean it. The ponzu sauce, the rice, the mixins - I'm just obsessed. The fish is always fresh and generous, they do not skimp!! I feel like I get a major bang for my buck here. I got delivery from here tonight and WOW, I am impressed. This is a great addition to Oakland, even though there are a ton of other places to get poke and bubble tea in the neighborhood. But this option might just outshine the rest!! First of all, the delivery was FAST. That's probably half on the restaurant's preparation speed and half on the delivery driver, but it's worth mentioning. Especially since it's raw fish, you want your food to get to you asap and not get to a weird or dangerous temperature. My food arrived 10 minutes before the estimated delivery time! I built my own bowl with spicy tuna, salmon, and tons of veggies with the JJ shoyu sauce. It was delicious! I appreciated that they kept the scoop of spicy tuna separate and didn't mix it in with the rest of the ingredients like I've seen at other poke restaurants (it just isn't appetizing looking when they do that!). The bowl was $12 and was more food than I could eat, so I'd say it's a great value! I just wish that I could've tasted the sauce more. I think it would have helped to pull all of the ingredients together flavor-wise if they were more coated in the sauce. I also got a thai iced tea with tapioca that was also delicious! It wasn't too sweet like thai iced tea tends to be. I could actually taste the tea, and the tapioca was a good size, texture, and flavor. It was about $5.50 with the tapioca for the 700ml drink, which is pretty on par with the prices at other places. I will definitely be back here, hopefully in person next time!
