JJ's Cafe is amazing. I am a local here in Old Station where the restaurant is located. Our family eats there all the time. The owners Anne and Chuck and great cooks and always so welcoming. They have homemade bread, buns, cookies, jam and more. It's always clean, prices are good and the food couldn't get any better. We ate lunch here twice during a week long camping trip on Hat Creek. Sat on their patio both times so our dog could join us. We ordered hamburgers with fries and local Fall River beer on tap. Burgers are hand formed from fresh local beef on homemade buns. Result: best burgers ever! Tasty, juicy, scrumptious! Also tried their beer cheese soup which was the daily special. It was made with Fall River Hexagenia IPA. So good! The service was friendly and efficient and they have WiFi. I hear they have good breakfasts too but will have to wait till our next trip to give that a try. read more

Stopped on the way back to Reno and was not disappointed in the other reviews for this hidden gem. If you find yourself in the general area, this is a MUST stop. I had the corn beef hash with egg and "pancake". The hash (as the waitress described) was cured and spiced by the chef - AMAZING!!!! The "pancake" was actually two that were more than a meal in themselves. My wife and son were impressed with their selections and we have a difficult time deciding on what to order as everything on the menu (plus the pies, strudels and breads) looked terrific. Weather was nice and we should have enjoyed the patio sitting but the atmosphere of the 6 tables and the family feel inside was terrific. read more

Popped in here for some lunch vittles, during our annual ride thru Lassen. Great ambiance and service, with outdoor seating and attitude from our server. Top it all off with home baked breads, pregnant little ground squirrels, house cured meats and you've got some good times in the Sierras. The best lunch spot we found our whole roadtrip, and they use locally-sourced beef. It's a very small cafe with a simple menu of salads, burgers, and sandwiches, accompanied by a daily soup and fresh baked goods. When I inquired about the daily soup, our server's sassy answer was "beef brisket." Yes. Beef brisket soup! If it weren't for the fact that I wanted to fit in a cookie with my sandwich, I would have gotten the soup too. P got the swiss mushroom burger, and I got the pulled pork sans bun. I did not expect such a delicious, tangy, and slightly fatty (in a good way) pulled pork. It was a hearty portion for a sandwich, and there were plenty of fries with skin on. The fries were a little bit too dry for my liking, but doctorable with ketchup. P left completely stuffed after she cleaned her plate. Pies are in the narrow fridge in the corner behind the counter, and cookies, breads, and pastries are out on the counter. Many customers opt for a treat to go. Their oatmeal cookie was thick, chewy, and studded with raisins. I wish I had gotten a backup for the next day. They have a separate menu for breakfast, which I wish I was close enough to try. If you're driving along the 44, or near Lassen Volcanic National Park, this is a must. read more

Stopped on 29 & 30 June for lunch with my grandson (7) and friend - we stayed just south of JJ's at a rental called Fish Inn. My grandson had a grilled cheese the first day and a JJ's Junior burger the second day - the Junior Burger with cheese was more than he could eat so we took half along with us. My friend had the hot pastrami and JJ's Burger - he preferred the burger over the pastrami. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich both day - yes it is good enough to have it two days in a row. The first lunch we all ordered home fries - but the second day my friend and I opted for the cole slaw, while my grandson order the fries again - only because he did not want cole slaw, salad or soup options. The home fires are wedges of potatoes with the skins that I think are baked rather than deep fried. The end result is a potato that is too dry. The cole slaw was a better option. Service was good both days - despite a crowded restaurant on Sunday. I also bought cinnamon rolls for breakfast the next two mornings from the selection of freshly baked goods on offer. The nearby location, decent food at reasonable prices, makes lunch at JJ's a no brainer. read more

We have stopped here a few times for pies and pastries, but this was our first time eating breakfast. My husband had the corned beef hash and I had the JJ's light breakfast with a small order of biscuits and gravy. Everything we had was excellent!!! The biscuit was the perfect size, not some obnoxiously large thing like I've seen at other places. You could taste the homemadeness of the gravy...it was so good that I made up that word for it. Prices were VERY reasonable and if you remember, buy a pie to go before you leave to take home and share the deliciousness with others. read more

The burger is awesome, I have ordered Pastrami burger the other day while we waiting our packs been sent to Old Station. The waitress was very nice and the owner even nicer to provide us free taste on their homemade local beef jerky! They are super hiker friendly and knowing the hikers' need. Just let them know how you think your meal in person and they are willing to improve their service. They are also provide power outlets and wifi! read more

Stopped for lunch on our way back to Reno from Ashland. Great food and service, plus nice spot outside for the dog. If you like pastrami then have one of the various dishes that include it. Will definitely return when in the area. read more

Have had some nice experiences at JJ's recently. Lots of nice outdoor seating available, WiFi, bathrooms, etc. Food is coming out efficiently and hot. Good customer service and hot fresh coffee served. I do still wish portions were just a bit larger for the price but besides that it's a decent place. read more

There's not a lot of food choices between the south entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park and the other side, unless of course you packed it in yourself. I was pleasantly surprised to luck out and find JJ's. I actually drove past it but "Cafe" caught the corner of my eye and I turned around to check it out. They have a few local beers on tap and a regular cafe menu with choices to satisfy everyone. Pretty standard fare but JJ's gets the extra star above the average three for being out there in the middle of nowhere feeding the hungry wanderers. UNDER NEW MANAGMENT ~ I was so disappointed, No flavor on the Pastrami Grill, nor on the Rueben Grill Hot sandwiches. I was so pleased with the previous owner, she had some class. First of all this little placed is WAY over priced. Secondly we ordered the bacon chicken sandwich yo share which came with Potatoe wedges....There were a total of maybe 5 or 6 on the plate. We weren't expecting much as this is the only place to eat in Old Station... And we were all pleasantly surprised! We arrived for dinner, and sat out back in their roomy patio. We shared our dishes and picked clear winners: the pork loin sandwich was okay/decent, the sriracha burger was really quite good... And the pastrami sandwich was amazing! The best sandwich I've had in a very long time. Good beer on tap, too! We returned for breakfast, and ordered traditional American fare: biscuits & gravy, eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes... And the corned beef hash was exceptional! They also make their own bread, but I was too happy & full... Have breakfast here, hike Lassen, then eat at JJ's again for dinner. read more

i have been coming to hat creek for many years, and have been making it in may and october the past few years . . . know the creek well and catching trout is never a problem, although it was more of a challenge this past may because of high water . . . besides enjoying the fishing and the beautiful surroundings, a real highlight of our trip -- my dog tag and me -- is eating at JJ's . . . great good, great people and they let tag sit in the patio !!! had a nice visit in may and hope to be back in october . . . bruce meadows santa rosa, ca. read more

Best burger I have enjoyed in a long time! Everuthing from the house made bun to the grass fed beef patty, to the bacon were quality ingredients at made the perfect lunch on our busy day. I had breakfast at JJ's after camping near the Hat Creek Rim Overlook. I was up early and off to drive through Lassen Volcanic NP and was hungry. JJ's was a great mix of locals and tourists, and got surprisingly busy for a Monday. The coffee was fresh and hot, the food was excellent, and the conversation with Shane, a retired local guy, was great. Would eat here again next time I'm at Lassen. read more
