They have recently renewed the store and it looks much brighter than before, it looks super clean. Better organization and more items. Grocery items were good before as well and I like how I can quickly go grab fresh fruits and also veggies for cooking. This store is super close to the Mountain View downtown train station. So it's super convenient even if you're biking / don't drive. They've also resumed their restaurant servings as well - I saw sushi and Mexican. They do have some seatings outside and it is well lit and the ambience is great now. I love supporting this local store and buy some items from there every few days. Staff was really cool and respectful BUT..... I have never had a burrito this greasy in my life. Halfway through it I realized i had so much meat grease running down my hand. Normal American groceries are not the cheapest around but certainly tend to be cheaper than Safeway. JL Produce is awesome. Such a convenient local market filled with (mostly) fresh produce, a variety of fresh cheeses and salsa, milk, ice cream, and plenty of dry / canned goods. This is one of the very few places to shop in the mostly residential neighborhood and is a nice destination to walk to during my evening walks that take me on Stevens Creek Trail. It's just a short detour away on Central Ave. My only con is that the line sometimes gets really backed up with only 1 register ever open here. So sometimes, I'm done shopping in 5 minutes, but waiting in line for 10 minutes. In any case, if that's what keeps the prices low, so be it. It's a convenient market and a nice destination for my evening walks. I do wish they were open an hour later. read more

I think these guys used to be up near san antonio. The weird mix of Russian and Mexican ingredients is the key. Though this is more cramped and theyve got a taqueria got a Topo Chico 1.5L drink and then tacos of caneza, al pastor, chorizo and lengua. The cabeza was good but the rest were just ok. Great selection of items at reasonable prices. I can grab the majority of the items on my grocery list including household essentials in a pinch like tp, laundry detergent, etc. Their produce is reasonably priced and of good quality. I notice that their produce has a lot more flavor than that at any of the local big name grocery stores. They have a pretty large variety of cooking spices at very reasonable prices. This is a great spot for affordable produce and meat. The variety of produce offered is extensive and prices are very reasonable. Meat is also very affordable (almost suspiciously so!). I can get often get everything I need to make a complete meal for under $10 which is great. I will say that some of the fruit I've bought here hasn't been the tastiest or highest quality. For example, I bought a pound of strawberries for $2 here once and they tasted mealy and bland. I chalked this up to the fact that if prices look too good to be true... They probably are ;) They have a good selection of international items from a variety of areas as well as a taqueria inside the store. They have an ok selection of pantry items (canned goods etc.) but inventory is limited compared to a bigger grocery store like Safeway. Same with the frozen items. Bread skews toward international/Mexican selections with a serviceable but limited range of other other options. Checkout is usually efficient. The parking lot is small, but I've never had difficulty finding a spot. The location is central and convenient. read more

They often don't follow the storage guidelines and, for example, can store stuff that has to be frozen in fridges. I've been also overcharged many times for the weighted items, so you better remember the prices and check each item when check-out. LETTUCE-GATE J&L Produce in Mountain View is a small grocery store specializing in produce, but carrying every kind of groceries imaginable from many countries. It also has a taqueria. I have gone there almost daily for over 6 years, as it is within walking distance from my apartment and has lots of neat stuff. The lines for check-out are often very long, going all the way to the back of the store and sometimes winding around the aisles. The employees are friendly and helpful. A few days ago I bought a lot of stuff, and when I got home noticed that a head of lettuce was not in my bags. I looked at my receipt and everything was there, listed by name, as well as one item that said "No Description" and was exactly the price of a head of lettuce. I went back a day or two later with my receipt and asked for my head of lettuce. The cashier took me to see a woman who was stocking the shelves. The woman said the "no description" item was not lettuce because it did not say lettuce and would not give me the head of lettuce. The cashier rings items up very fast, and maybe hit "no description" instead of "lettuce." There is no bar code on lettuce at this store. In all my years of shopping, nothing like this has ever happened to me, especially for a head of lettuce. If good customers come back to a store and say a head of lettuce was not in their bag, they are given a head of lettuce. Period. If I had wanted to cheat them, I would have said the $15.00 bag of shrimp was missing. J&L Produce Market is an interesting place, and I recommend it, with reservations. Some of the produce is definitely priced better than at other stores, but you have to make sure it is not rotting. I have gone home with a lot of that, and never said a word. If you go there, do not be overcome by the haste of the cashier in checking you out, make sure everything gets into your bags, and check the receipt before you leave. I will shop there again, but only for 1-2 items on a trip, and if I do not have the time to go somewhere else. At least all I lost was a head of lettuce, not a bag of shrimp. read more

I was checking out at the register and a customer ahead of me asked the older male at the register who would use their credit card for 95 cents. The older male attendant bent over and whispered to the customer, before I knew it both men were staring at me. I am a black female who frequents this this market at least 3 times a week. I have enjoyed shopping here and have never experienced any racism up until now. I have brought them numerous customers and I have always praised their politeness. Sad to say today was my last day at this market. I will be giving my business to a different market down the street. I won't spend my money to be publicly shamed. Great produce selection and price. It is within walking distance for me so its ideal for days when I just need a couple things. My husband likes their fresh meat options for fish etc. I always get my peppers and tomatoes from there. It is the only place nearby where I can find manzano peppers. My only complaint, is that some of the produce isn't refrigerated, so it probably goes bad faster. It's still worth it for the price and convenience. read more

I want to support a local business, but this store has gotten so bad. Be very careful at the checkout. The price listed per pound in the vegetable section is not always what you end up getting charged by the cashier. Take the time to scrutinize your receipt before you walk out the door. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I was charged a much higher price per pound than what was written next to the food. Unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened to me here. Their computer system is either not always updated with the correct amount, or the sign is incorrectly written. It feels like bait-and-switch. I wish this store had better management. There is a little bit of everything in this store! There is a small butcher/neat counter, they have ACME breads, tortillas, organic milk, Russian kefir... Swedish gingersnaps, Manila mangoes. Ice cream. JL Produce is a small store, so when the are 5 customers in line, it does feel cramped. I'm torn whether I should write a review, because part of me don't want blow the cover of this hidden gem. But at the time I want everyone to know about it as well so they stay in business. And so that you can come and be pleasantly refreshed as you skip the 30min it takes to go through Safeway. In San Francisco there are small Latino markets like this everywhere. This is a wonderful smaller international grocery in mountain view located near the main drag of castro, specializing in specialty food items from around the world. There is a small meat counter of good quality, and the produce section is competitively priced with a good selection. It does tend to spill out of the store onto the sidewalk. The dry goods are a selection of what could be called ethnic or regional cooking items. There is a small selection of halal items in the freezer and an even smaller selection of kosher items on the shelves. I have to say if you are looking for all halal/kosher this is not the lace to shop, but it's pleasing that they at least have some selection.Additionally a very good selection of indo-pak items-fresh drumsticks, besan flour, pulses, dal, maggi (of course) and what seems to be the full range of MDH, Shan , and Priya brand of spice packaging.There's also a good selection of European goods so if you're looking for some georgian style beans, appel canned fish (in all the varieties) Mestemacher or Feldkamp they've got those as well. I could go on and on but the point is if you're looking for something tasty from the olde country-wherever that is-they'll prolly have it as long as it's not to unconventional. No balut, or lutefisk. They get fresh bread both Latino (sweet breads such as conchas) and European (italian country loaf, baguettes and an assortment of batards both sweet and savory) every day, Though with those the availability is variable as they may sell out depending how many grandmothers have stocked up that morning for their family. So far so good, there's enough conventional things to keep you going and all the food items your grandparents knew, plus some stuff that you may have always wanted to try to keep you happily coming back again and again. Alas this grocery is not perfect, there are some small flaws I'm discounting for now as I really enjoy shopping here, but that totally aren't cool. The taqueria in back-it's just not that good. More rice then anything else in the burrito and all the items seem to be skimping on ingredients. Boo!!! The time things spend on shelf-the plantain chips we got were the stalest things I've tried to eat in a lonnnggg time. To be blunt, they were inedible. I recommend checking the lot dates on any frozen or dry good item before purchasing. The parking-there's always space but since the parking lot is shared with a half dozen other businesses including four restaurants during the lunch rush you could be circling around the back to park. A nice little family market that's packed with variety. JL has a great selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables that far exceed the quality of the surrounding markets and groceries. I've read previous reviews about the hit and miss quality of produce here but realistically produce ages. I appreciate JL in that they don't use the same shady practices big S around the corner does to hide poor quality. Just like everywhere you should always check your receipt; Since they're a small outfit and get quite busy it's easy for anyone to accidentally charge an item twice. The fruit and vegetable at this local market are cheaper and way better quality than Safeway or even whole foods. It must be family run and everybody works very hard. I appreciate their work and support them in every way I can. I would recommend them to change the printer or ink in their cash register because the recepts are hard to read. Twice I have noticed errors in my receipts. I honestly believe they were in good faith but you might want to check your receipt before leaving. I work super close to this store and I come here at least once a week. They have fresh produce such as Bananas,lettuce, tomatoes, guavas and so much more. They even carry organic strawberries which I buy weekly. In the back of the store they have a small carneceria and sell Mexican cheese, salsa and meats. Can get crowded at lunch time but I haven't had any issues. Parking can get tight as the lot is pretty small. read more
