As others have mentioned, it states online and on maps that this location is open 24/7, yet they have a piece of paper on the door saying closed from 1 - 5 AM. It's okay if you actually aren't open 24/7 but you need to update your hours and be upfront with people so they don't waste their time! I almost wonder if it's just the employees deciding to lockup and say it's closed without any of the higher ups knowing. read more

It's not my favorite location, but I do appreciate it for its hours of operation. They recently put in a new pharmacy area that is quite large in the back of the store, which was really helpful when it came to getting vaccines. I've used that place for shots at least two times and both were Quick, easy, In-N-Out. In terms of inventory, they have 100% of what the average Safeway would carry, and I haven't come across any shelves that were emptied out other than the boxed cake mix section - were just coincidences. IMHO the produce section could use a bit more variety and I don't usually buy my vegetables and fruits there. The meat section is generally OK and they have a tiny seafood counter, but I don't buy seafood there either. What stands out in the Safeway is the amount of space that's dedicated to non-foods . It is smack in the middle of the store and it's about a third of the supermarket. Other places have only one aisle dedicated to non-food stuff, and maybe another aisle, dedicated to food containers and plastic picnic wear, but this place really wants you to think it's a mini Cvs. Not sure whether that's impressive or just strange layout but since it is open 24 hours some folks might be very happy about that. read more

NOT OPEN 24 HOURS! CLOSED FROM 2AM-5AM! This location is listed as open 24 hours, so please tell me why they continue to close their store down from 2am-5am. REPEATEDLY have come here during an emergency situation in the middle of the night to a paper sign hung on each door saying closed 2am til 5am. Customers who live in either Mountain View & or Los Altos, this is the ONLY location in town opened 24 hours. When asking employees why they have closed, they are unable to give a reason as to why. There is not a whole lot of stores open 24 hours around here and if it's an emergency as being sick and needing something this location would be going too. But when you show up to a closed location with two paper-made signs on the door and no other option but to go home empty-handed and then return again once open in the morning at 5am! Since they are supposed to be open, DoorDash then allows customers to place orders to be shopped for and delivered. But once the Dasher has arrived they show up to a location that is closed, so now they have to have that order canceled. They end up losing money due to that fact that DoorDash only will give them 1/2 of the initial amount shown when either accepting or rejecting that order. So.. if this store location wants to be permanently CLOSED in the middle of the night, then CHANGE your hours! read more

Of all of the Safeway grocery stores in the Bay Area, this is -- by far -- my favorite. The store on Middlefield in Palo Alto is very small. The Menlo Park store is just as large as this one, but there is always a very peculiar odor in that store (almost like they always mop the floor with dirty water). Other Safeway stores in the area are either too congested (in terms of interior design) or they just lack parking. This Safeway is big, clean and nearly always stocked with the selections that Safeway stores carry. When I know that I need something, I go to THIS store (rather than other grocery stores or even the Big Box stores nearby that are perpetually out of half of your shopping list). I do wish that they carried a few more brands though. Even their extensive soda selection lacks some common sodas found around the country (like Barq's Root Beer). That's more of an area issue rather than localized to this store. The customer service here is quite good for a large grocery store. In particular, the deli and bakery staff are always very helpful. I love the location. While parking is very tight in the front parking lot, the second floor parking is very spacious. There are two elevators from the top lot that take directly into the store. There are also a lot of nearby stores and restaurants. A Trader Joe's grocery store is located directly behind this store...and a Wal-Mart just behind the Trader Joe's. This shopping center offers plenty of restaurants ranging from very nice to fast casual. Thus, after eating at a restaurant, you can pick up whatever groceries that you might need and head out on San Antonio Road or El Camino Real. This store should be a model for other Safeway stores. I just wish that Safeway would adapt some of the things that make grocery stores in other states so welcoming (such as Publix or HEB). Pretty large Safeway in a location with a lot of apartments. I'm not sure why reviews are so low because the food is pretty good, but service is a bit on the slower side. I went through the entirety of this place and it's rather large. One of the biggest if not biggest Safeway locations. It's more modern than a few. This is another weird Safeway. I told my husband I have to get a few things, mainly the refrigerated pudding. This store has many shelves of that with a wide selection of flavors and brands. From a huge store next to Los Altos, usually well stocked to the rafters, I was surprised to see that pudding area looked as if a tornado had hit it, with most everything gone or in disarray. I continued on without any and got other things instead, in my cart. While out there on the floor my cart froze up and wouldn't budge. I was still trying to push it as at this point this had never happened to me while shopping INSIDE a store. Just then a manager (looked like) came tearing by, running by me, and told me to take this other cart just sitting there, out of place, so I put my things in it and carried on. Except this cart was hobbling instead of stubbornly stopping, and I only got so far before I had to ditch it out on the floor. Now I had to hobble carrying my items myself, to pick up one more item, and continue that through checkout and out and got a working cart to help me get to the car. While their flower selection is not always the freshest or best looking, I was able to find what I needed. They conveniently have self-service kiosks for those who only have a couple of items and want to check out faster. Pharmacy review: I used to love this Safeway when they first opened. It was clean, open 24/7, plenty of parking with plenty of other shops and what not in the San Antonio shopping center. I even liked their pharmacy. However, now that it has been a few years, their pharmacy has gone to shit. I got my medication filled like normal earlier this year and wanted to change pharmacies since I no longer live in Mountain View. I had called earlier and turns out someone had already filled it so I decided to come on the weekend to pick it up only to find out it was past the 7 days when I had only called 3 days prior. They asked if I wanted to wait 30 minutes to fill it and I declined. I requested then requested that it be changed by my doctor and the new pharmacy received the order only to call me back and say my prescription had been filled elsewhere. So called this pharmacy back and the lady was rude and hung up without confirming or anything. Just cut the line! Now I checked my insurance and it looks like they have been filling and charging me ahead of time without ever notifying me that the medication has been filled. They do put it back on the shelf and cancel the charge but that is medication that I cannot get because I am not notified and I cannot get there before they close early at 5pm! read more

So lets face it its a large corporate grocery store. Huge in fact. It basically checks off most of the tropes you would expect from a store this size. It tends to have more in the way of prepared food than a standard sized Safeway, and is better stocked with far more choices than the small one that lurks in our neighborhood. That being said parking can be a real challenge. They do have a rooftop parking spot, but it still sucks. The other issue is that its hard to find a cart near the store and many are quite filthy. I used to be a hardcore Costco and Trader Joe's grocery store shopper -- with a few other miscellaneous places like Raley's, Save Mart, Nob Hill, and Whole Foods thrown in for those speciality items I need. Very rarely would I shop at Safeway, but since I moved to this area, my shopping habits have completely changed and this particular Safeway on San Antonio is now my favorite grocery store. Here's why: 1) Fantastic selection of both regular grocery items, organic foods, and specialty brands like hard to find cheeses, produce, international foods, and spices. 2) Great meat and seafood department with excellent sales every week. I can now get a wonderful selection of meats and seafoods as I need them instead of going to Costco and having to pack my freezer with more than I want. 3) The sushi department is also a winner -- everything is made fresh daily and it shows. 4) Using the Safeway Club card and the Just4U app dramatically reduces my grocery bill every month. 5) The store is immaculately clean. 6) All of the employees here are very professional and helpful -- especially Joe, the manager, and Katia up front. Joe is a pleasure to deal with -- on every occasion he's assisted me with a customer service issue like a raincheck or refund, he's been nothing short of excellent. He's fast and friendly too! 7) And most important of all, this store is always, ALWAYS well stocked, so I can get all of my grocery shopping done in one shot! I used to have to make several trips per week to Costco, Trader Joes, Nob Hill, etc. because those stores were always out of sale items or several necessary things on my list. So frustrating! And in the words of the inimitable Sweet Brown: "Ain't nobody got time for that!" My only complaint would be that they appear to need more clerks because the last few times I've been there, there wasn't enough checkers up front and the lines were too long, checkers are made to both check and bag groceries (not cool), and there weren't any shopping carts in the corral, so customers would have to stalk someone putting groceries away in their car and ask for their cart -- because there weren't any carts available in the parking lot either! C'mon, Safeway District Manager. Do better. This store is in a vey busy location at the San Antonio Shopping Center -- give them more staffing hours. The actual store itself isn't too bad although I have waited in absurd lines on regular occasion and the self checkout often isn't even attended and there's been countless times (~40% of the time) one random item somehow throws an error and I have to go to the service counter to tell them there's no one there and I (often more than myself) am stuck. But this most recent Instacart order I rec'd from this location is impressively bad... 1. It was missing 1/4 of all the items I ordered but were not marked as out of stock, leaving me charged $15 for items I didn't get 2. I was charged $9.95 for a 1 hour time window which they missed by 4 hours 3. The driver LITERALLY snuck onto my porch, stealthily left the groceries (I'm in the living room next to the door, can hear people coming up the stairs easily) and ran for it (likely forgetting all the items in #1) 4. They charged me $2.26 for qty 1 tomato... not a pound of them, one small tomato They owe me $30 by my math. So I tried to get support this morning. Their hours are 10am - 5pm. The selections were varied and had many chocolate cakes available! Great bakery, samples available. 11/2/19 Walked through the doors and were greeted almost immediately by the store manager. We needed to cash in our lotto tickets and Shawn helped immediately. He was very kind and professional. Haven't ever seen a store manager at night. Well, we shopped and ended up he was helping customers at the check-out. So friendly, efficient, professional and kind. Very surprising. (2) Customer service at the store Rosa lied on who is the manager when the customer tried to escalate the issue, and then issued a one time mercy to issue $0.3 bag fee refund when the customer tried to escalate further. I was verbally abused and disrespected as a customer at this store upon pick up my online order #47197990 I ordered #47197990 on 07/29 and reserved to pick up on 07/30 after 3pm. When I arrived around 4pm, I ordered $7.52 4.5LB short rib (was on sale on 07/29), but it got replaced with $17.2 2.5LB short rib, I requested to return the item when attendant brought the order to me, I got rejected by Alex in the pick up spot, he told me the only way to do is to accept the order and request cancel online (I couldn't find out how to do it online, since the instruction was to work with store attendant directly). I declined the bags before accepting my order, since I brought my own bags. I got rejected as well, Alex told me to cancel it online. Alex seems to be new, so I decided to go to the customer service instead to request return and also request the refund of bag fee. I was with my 4 year old daughter, I went to the customer service, and explained why I need to return the item, I got the same answer that I couldn't do so in the store, (however, I have done that multiple times in the past in the same store). I had to argue 10mins, and the customer service Rosa decided to gave me one time exception to "allow" me to return the item that I don't want. $17.20. I asked her to refund my bag fee $0.3, She said no, I have to accept the bags fees since it was charged when I ordered online. California requires the store to charge bag fee, she can not return the bag fees to me. I told her I declined the bags when I pick up the order, Rosa told me it doesn't count, I had to text/call the store long before I picked up. I told her that I clearly declined the bags upon the pick up, she said no, i have no right to request the refund, she already took back my bags. I said I am willing to pay $1 dollar to the store, to get the $0.3 cent back, it is not about the Money, it is about to acknowledge the right that the customers can decline the bags even if it is the pick up orders. I don't care about the money, I care if I have the right to decline the bags that I don't want. I asked to talk to the manager, Rosa said Alex was the manager (apparently he is not, I am a supervisor in the other company, I can tell Alex is not a manager), Rosa tried to stop me from escalating, I told her I would like to escalate the issue and talk to the supervisor of the store. Rosa told me that "fine, I gave you the $0.3 as one time mercy", I dont need mercy, I need the store to acknowledge it is the customer's right to decline the bags. I almost cried in the store, and in front of my 4 year old daughter. I dont know why I have to fight 20mins to return an unwanted item, and a $0.3 bag fee. I am willing to give the $1 or whole amount of the order to let the store acknowledge that it is customer's right to reject the bags upon pick up. When I left the store, my daughter cried and asked me why I was in an argue, and she was terrified by how i was treated, and begged me not to go to this store ever again. Pretty funny how a small town like Mountain View has four Safeways, which all seem to share the same problems, i.e. stocking different items and being severely understaffed. If you come here late enough in the evening (say, 9:00-10:00), it's a common sight to see all of TWO cashiers open, each of them with a 10+ person line stretching halfway down the aisles to the milk in the back. (This despite having 12 checkout lanes and a huge cluster of self-checkout stations, all of them closed.) This was just as true pre-pandemic. The difference now is that the employees seem to be getting worse. Tonight I got stuck with a cashier who failed at scanning a simple coupon, then when I pointed out how it didn't work, insisted it did, even though the receipt said otherwise. Instead of making an effort to fix her mistake, she gave me attitude, then ignored me, then told me to go take it up with Customer Service even though it was closed, intentionally leaving me standing at a dead counter for nothing (in other words, "screw you pal, you're not my problem anymore"). If not for a much nicer cashier who'd already ended her shift at 10:00 yet volunteered to help, nothing would've been done. Between the wasted time, shit service, and Safeway's high pricing on top of it all, there isn't much reason to come here with Sprouts, Target, and Trader Joe's all right next door. read more

This Safeway is doing a very good job with Covid regulations. I've felt very safe in the store - there are supplies of wipes if you need them, carts are cleaned, staff are attentive. It's the only store right now that I will go into and I find their shelves are well stocked. Very much appreciate the folks at checkout - they are friendly and helpful. read more

I had such a wonderful experience at Starbucks in the Safeway and the lady named DAYAANNA was so nice. So I want to give a five star to her.

They have no idea what customer service is. This store has 12 checkout stations and they typically have 2-3 open, even during prime time shopping. Most recently, each station, including self-checkout, had @ 8 people waiting. You never see a manager on the floor trying to respond to traffic flow or ease congestion.Their typical response is they don't control the schedule so they can't do anything about it. Great experience shopping early last Sunday (6:40AM). Well marked and enforced distancing outside the store and easy access to cart wipes (however, it would be better to have these right next to the carts instead of inside the doors). Aisles were one way and the store was not at all crowded. I was able to grab everything on my list, including toilet paper! I approve of the one pack per person rule so that as many people as possible could be satisfied. Service was very friendly and shoppers were doing their best to keep their distance. They are open 24x7 and I usually go late in the evening after 9 pm so the lines are almost non-existent. The store is well-stocked and huge, so you can pretty much expect to find everything you're looking for under one roof. The baked goods section is a personal favorite. In case you need to shop around, there's a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart all within walking distance so you're at least in the right neighborhood if Safeway isn't cutting it for you. There's also a Starbucks (not 24x7) inside the store including all the other services you'd typically find at a Safeway. read more

This is a typical Safeway and the store is fine but they never have nearly enough check out lanes open. Even the self service lanes have very long lines. Do you yourself a favor and go to the Safeway in Los Altos, basically the same store except no long lines. You will save the time on check out that it took you to drive there. read more

My wife did a major shopping at the San Antonio Safeway in advance of Thanksgiving. There was a coupon in the app that reduced the price of the item, Despite having "clipped" it, the receipt at the register failed to recognize this discount, We only detected it when she got home, This is not the first time this has occurred, but typically it is not worth the time, trouble and aggravation to go back. This one was worth $10 so I went back. Met w/ the asst mgr working cust service. She explained that the system is down loaded from corporate and she was unable to "fix" the problem. (Who knows how many other customers were subject to this error?). When I suggested she talk to her district mgr, she said she never gets to see (him/her) only the store manager has direct conversations. Further, Safway corporate doesn't listen to employees and is oblivious of bad business practices and loss of customers due to poor customer service. I was offered a $5 gift card as a part of service recovery. Bottom line, whenever I have an opportunity...I'll go to another grocery store instead of Safeway. This is not our first time where we have encountered this problem. If Safeway corporate reads this...check out your software personnel and verify the down load for errors prior to release.
