I've been a Nijiya fan since before I went vegan! It's a small store and parking can be hard to find since it's in a shared plaza, but all the staff are super friendly and they have several speciality items. When I'm in a hurry and hungry, I usually grab the avocado rolls, veggie rolls, inari, or seaweed salad. I'm also a fan of the vegan friendly fruit jelly desserts in the refrigerated section (around the corner from the hot bar). I really wish they consistently stocked vegan Kewpie. Before I went vegan, I used to come here for the sushi, chirashi, sandwiches, hot bar, and milk bread. They also have some cool snacks in the freezer, like pizza baos and matcha ice cream. read more

I used to come to this authentic Japanese grocery store when I lived in Mountain View. I was in the area on Tuesday, and stopped by to pick up some groceries, as well as, some prepared food for lunch. It's conveniently located on E El Camino Real, right before the 85 S on ramp. Parking was easy in the strip mall. Even though the store wasn't too big, they had all the stuff you'd expect at a Japanese supermarket, from fresh veggies/meat, frozen items, dry grocery/snacks, beauty/wellness items, to sushi/sashimi/bento boxes They even had a hot food area and indoor seating. Staff were always friendly, the store was clean and well organized. Prices were reasonable, and a few of the grocery items I bought were on sale. I also noticed they had some new bakery items near the hot food area. They even sold those pretty insulated Hawaiian shopping bags. I loved their huge selections of prepared food items. Besides my favorite yummy lotus root slices, I picked up an order of pork katsu sandwich. They offered me some katsu sauce at check out. I reheated my sandwich in the oven at home, and it tasted like fresh. It's a pretty big sandwich cut into 3 pieces, and it was delicious. A little authentic Japanese grocery store right off the El Camino Real near Hwy 85. The store is always clean with employees constantly replacing stock and straightening shelves. Today I picked up a few sushi trays to share. They have a large assortment for any pallet. I was a bit disappointed with the kappa. (cucumber) The rice and cucumber had no flavor. Came by for groceries the other day and it was a decent experience. Nijiya market is a Japanese grocery store with a few outlets in the Bay Area. Parking is plentiful in the private strip mall lot. There is a hot deli serving ramen, chicken karaage and some other hot snacks during the day. There are also a few tables to eat such foods by the entrance. There is also a cold cooked food selection which feature sushi, bento boxes etc. The grocery store has a good mix of premium-esque meats, frozen seafood, some vegetables, along with chips, ramen etc. Staff almost all wear disposable nitrile gloves with their apron uniform. read more

This is a fantastic and truly authentic Japanese market with a wonderful selection of Japanese grocery, great quality meats and fish and wonderfully made prepared items. I picked up a great bottle of sake, three trays of assorted sushi ( 1 large maki, 1 tray inari, and 1 mixed tray) a tray of gyoza, 1 smaller container mixed seasoned veggies with seaweed salad, carrots and bean sprouts, as well as some pocky pretzels and konjac gummies. They even offered me say sauce, wasabi, and chop sticks at check out. Last but not least if you want to keep your purchases cold, they keep a cooler of crushed ice outside for you to use gratis. Nice, clean little market. While Nijiya sells general groceries and produce, including a good assortment of Japanese snacks and groceries, Nijiya really excels with their hot food court and prepared sushi selections. They offer a small variety of prepared hot foods such as ramen, udon, katsu, karaage, seafood pancakes, and croquettes. Everything I've tried is quite good for a supermarket food court, and like everywhere else, prices have gone up significantly since pre-2020. Nijiya offers a fantastic selection of prepared sashimi, rolls, nigiri, and bento boxes. Be sure to get there early though because they do run out of items later in the day. They even have a small dining area with microwave for you to eat at if you'd like. I like that Nijiya is clean, and while the parking can be a little sparse at times, it's generally quite easy to find a spot as long as you're willing to walk a bit. However, I stronly recommend you try the hot bar items like squid, tonkatsu cutlets, and other items on their own or as part of the plates. I've been here twice and both times I have been very satisfied. I really like their premade rolls and bento boxes. I've tried the California roll and the salmon roll and both were fresh. My favorite is their bento box with rice, the large masago, and raw fish or raw scallop. It's so good!!! I love how the large masago burst in my mouth!!! So salty and good with rice. The second time I came here I decided to grab some fried food from their togo counter. I got half a pound of their fried calamari and 2 crab croquettes. This review is mainly about their Nijiya ramen. I get that it's not a restaurant-quality type of ramen, so set your expectations. But for $14, I feel like I could've went somewhere else, paid around the same price or a little more, maybe a $2 difference (including tax already) and gotten better quality and value. The broth was okay at best, but the noodles didn't sit right with me. They were more udon-like, and when I chewed them, they had a doughy, undercooked texture. Been coming out here for the past few years and have a wide selection of bento, sushi rolls, sashima, udon and other prepackaged meals than the one in San Jose and far cheaper. Here they have dine-in food court reasonably price for under $10 ramen, udon and soba whereas you'll be paying alot more for around $15 at one of many ramen shops. Great bargains 3 croquettes for $4.99 even better 6 takoyaki balls for $5.79 and 6 inari sushi for $5.99 this store is fully pack with Japanese snacks, beer, ramen, frozen appetizers and much more. Wasn't too busy when I came by on a Thursday morning ample parking best to come by on a weekday than on a weekend when it's usually pack with shoppers. read more

This Nijiya Market has a "fast food" dine-in/takeout area, which I love to get my comfort food of Curry Katsu Rice. The pork loin is deep-fried to a golden brown and is separate from the curry, so it stays crunchy. The sauce is a creamy, mildly spicy sauce that goes so well on the steamed rice. It also comes with Japanese pickles (fukujinzuke). This dish is not complete without it! The fukujinzuke cuts through the curry and gives it a nice flavor profile, texture, and crunch. They had a great selection of prepared food in an open, refrigerated grab-and-go area that was priced well and had a great selection! Always love the food and grocery at Nijiya. There are several tables inside the store so you can eat your sushi inside the market. I noticed that in the recent months there are some special cakes in the frozen or refrigerated section each time. I tried a couple of times and they were really good. Staff are also pretty friendly. Nijiya is a Japanese-American supermarket chain with this location being particularly popular for its variety of affordable lunch bentos and go-meals made daily. Including freshly made sushi. Particularly, my family really likes getting their huge sushi party set platters. They're pretty easy to get normally though ordering it in-person and possibly through phone. For the sake of freshness, there does seem to be a limit to how many platters of available, but it's not something that is an issue until around holidays as they're convenient for large gatherings. Even during the 4th of July apparently (and especially now during the pandemic) when even if it's one shared platter, sushi is essentially pre-proportioned for grabbing. For those living in the South Bay, there is actually another Nijiya Market location in San Jose's Japantown near downtown. However, this Mountain View location is set in a plaza along El Camino Real, which has made it more convenient as the plaza has a whole parking lot on top of being along a major road. As a result, they're popular for people who need to grab a decent, cheap lunch before going back to the office. Overall, a decent corner grocery for the area that's convenient for grabbing a bite to eat in the way most Asian grocery stories tend to be while fulfilling needs for all occasions. read more

We usually come here mostly for the sushi and generally have a good experience with it. However, this particular time we tried this Tonkatsu curry. It just wasn't good @ all. It definitely looks a lot better than it tastes! The curry and rice part was ok. But the Tonkatsu was probably one of the worst I've had. First off, it was only lukewarm. Next, it was very tough to bite and chew into. It was literally like I was eating rubber. Even dried pork jerky is easier to eat than this. Anyhow, we still finished it since I don't want to waste food. Because of this dish I had to lower my review. I will never order any of these "hot foods" here again because of this bad experience. The service here was good though. They were attentive and helpful when I asked for utensils, etc. The sushi was acceptable to me. But even then I felt like these used to taste better. The market is small and has a good selection of different things that makes me happy. I like the fresh veggies and good prices and a good section of bento food along with supermarket sushi. I took a chance to try the charashi and its nothing to wrote home about. The rice is too hard, tuna and yellowtail was too mushy. The little shrimp were mushy as well. I love Nijiya market because of their cheap bentos and sushi but this one really surprised me because there was a food court inside the supermarket. BTW, the price for these food court items are no joke! They're priced so well and it's something that I would love to come back to. I got their beef niku udon and also some tofu sushi while I was waiting for the udon. The tofu sushi is sooo good with its soft rice and also some other vegetables in the tofu skin as well. For the udon though, there was just so many toppings they give and I'm not complaining at all! It was definitely a delicious meal but to be honest, I believe they over cooked the udon. Overall, I'd definitely rate the udon to be a 3.5! I'd definitely buy more things if I wasn't on a budget but I only got two items. For many years, Nijiya San Jose has been my "go to" among all of their locations in the Bay Area. As of late, I've switched over to their location in Mountain View. Not to say it's better, but the parking situation is less painful. Big fan of their bentos. They share the same standard here like they do in San Jose and San Mateo. Nothing is shorted. I'd rather have their bento than dine at many restaurants these days. It's quality and hands down the best. I can't imagine not have my Nijiya bentos. Seriously! Besides bento, I pick up ingredients to prepare meals at home such as fish, poultry, and meat. Cooking at home most of time is the way to go especially these days. Without Nijiya I'd be devastated. I've only been to the one in Japantown in San Jose. Did not know there was one in Mountain View! Decided to go inside and see what they have available. There were lots of empty spaces of product missing. I know it's because of Covid that they cannot get their shipments in (like most foreign grocery stores). This location is a little bit bigger than the one in Japantown. They have A LOT more to-go options to choose from. Everything looked so good. I was surprised to find Canada Dry from Japan so I had to buy and try it. WAY better than the one from the United States! One thing that was disappointing was their candy "aisle". It's not even in an aisle, it's displayed by the registers. It's tough to look at anything because there's people that need to pay and you need to step out of the way and social distance. UGH!
