Very poor experience getting a bid for a pergola cover for a future outdoor kitchen. The initial turnaround time for a response was very quick. The woman I spoke to initially (Diane) was overly curious about exactly who else we were getting a bid from. We just said we weren't getting a ton of bids but had reached out so far to one other company. They sent out their estimator (the woman I spoke to - it was her husband) the next day (just a bit ago) who was a half hour early unannounced. He explained he could not meet in the backyard as he could not walk around the back to meet (he was extremely elderly and not very mobile) - and he would need to come through our house and sit at our kitchen table (this during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic). I am at higher risk for contracting the virus so I stepped into the bedroom. While waiting for us to answer the door he picked up some color samples on our porch and was looking at them and then abruptly dropped them so as not to get caught when my husband answered the door (this was captured in our doorbell video). He did not have a mask, gloves or any precautions on. We have not had anyone in our home in eight weeks. My husband was masked. In hindsight we should have refused as the experience went downhill from there. Once inside he sat down at our dining room table and on his way out to the backyard he touched all the dining chairs, the kitchen counter (to use for balance) and our patio chairs and table. Once outside he immediately sat down in our patio chair. My husband asked him if he wanted to take any measurements over at the pergola area and he said he wasn't able to get over to the area to look at it physically. He began telling my husband why he couldn't do the job and how we had the pad poured wrong (our concrete work was just done last week by professional licensed contractors), questioning our permits (we are in the middle of a large pool/landscape build and we are fully permitted for everything - and he was saying that the pergola roof would go over the neighbors fence, which makes no sense at all. We had an estimate done late yesterday afternoon and none of these issues came up. My husband told him this was not going to work out and asked him to leave. It took a bit to get him out and he had left his briefcase on our dining table so he had to come back through our house touching everything again. My husband asked him why he wasn't masked, wearing gloves etc and his response was that he wasn't infected. All of the contractors we've had working here *outside* our home the past six weeks have been appropriately masked and kept their distance appropriately. This was a poor experience all around. Very disappointing as I have never written a review like this and we have always had such great experiences with the local contractors. And this company has such amazing reviews which is why we contacted them for a bid. This is completely unacceptable business practice during a pandemic and then not to have even gotten a bid out of it was very frustrating. We spent the last 20 minutes disinfecting everything he touched inside and outside our home. Edit: Diane - the daughter of the estimator - keeps editing her response to this review. In case she now deletes the edit, she has added on that her dad had a mask and gloves in his hand and offered to put them on but my husband (who again was masked) refused saying he didn't need to. Diane was not here so I don't know if she is being untruthful or her dad is but the story keeps getting stretched on her end. Again, he DID NOT have any precautions with him or on him as stated above. He said he was not infected so he didn't need them when my husband inquired later in the visit. In addition, we have full doorbell videos of this gentleman and the dialogue that occurred as well as him picking up an item on our porch while he awaited us to answer the door and then dropping it. Anyone is welcome to contact me for the full videos or the pre-edited response Diane initially had before she added that her dad offered to put on safety precautions. I've tried to attach them here and it appears Yelp does not like video attachments. If this modification of Diane's Yelp review response continues, we will be contacting the contractors board and the governors office regarding their lack of mandatory safety procedures during the Covid-19 epidemic. Maybe we should do that anyway? Diane states her dad is 88 but still doing a great job. An estimator needs to be able to walk around the side of a home to estimate a patio cover or pergola. An estimator needs to be able to get up close to the area he is estimating. An estimator needs to be able to take measurements. He was unable to do any of these things and could not provide us an estimate. It was a wasted visit and he jeopardized our health by failing to take proper safety precautions. read more

This included 2 fan beams and a solid cover patio spanning 32' x 12'. Bad weather and HOA approval delayed our install. But Ken, the installer, remained in communication with us and installed the patio within a couple hours. We have recommended JMAR to everyone we know interested in installing a patio. read more

We decided to go with this company because we really liked Karl but he isn't the one that actually does the work and there is no communication between him and the subcontractors. We signed the contract 2 months ago and still have no patio cover. I have had to call repeatedly to try to get this going. Nobody seems to know what's going on. Then to top it all off the sub contractors dug in the wrong spot. My husband tried to stop them and called in to the guy who did the measurements. Now one of the guys in charge took off to Mexico and wont be back till next week . I have never seen such unprofessional behavior. At this point our faith in this company is nonexistent and we just want to cancel and go with someone who would do it right and in a timely manner. We cannot get a straight answer from them about being able to cancel and there was even mention of us having to pay for the work that was already done , even though it's wrong. Karl came to give an estimate on a patio cover. Yes he was very reasonably priced as compared to others. And in his eyes everything was doable. Fans, recessed lighting, and outlets that I had asked for could all be done afterwards by a licensed electrician he stated. I asked if it could be done with the install of the patio? No, because we aren't licensed electricians he said. I really wanted a beautiful extended living space with recessed lighting, fans and outlets for those string lights. But the truth is that the lighting, outlets and fans could never be installed afterwards on these patios because of the way they are manufactured. You either need to buy the lighting strips from them $450 per light that are not dimmable or forgo any recessed lighting afterwards. I had asked many questions of which he couldn't answer. He had no samples of his product, no knowledge on product specs, no significant portfolio of their work done.???? Never took an outside measurement. Seems to me he'd sell his patio and be done with the deal. Leaving me to only find out later that the electrical lights, outlets, fans could never be installed on this product. :-(( read more

I would not recommend this company the permit was approved 2-15-19 the installation was completed today 5-13-19. I wanted to cancel after footings were poured because 1 of footings was 2 foot short of where it was supposed to be which was brought to their attention before concrete was poured and was told it was fine, which made concerned with the competence of the builder who is different from patio installer. I then asked how they were going to set columns since they were not poured in the concrete and I was clear from the first conversation with Karl I did NOT want the columns drilled and bolted through the pool deck which was poured 4-30-19. I was told that's not how they do it . Had I been told I would not have went with jmar. When asking about the cancel process my wife could not get an answer the only thing we got was harassment from the owner about the review she had posted. I already paid 500 and was told I would not get that money back and my wife did not want to deal with taking it to court. We figured to let them finish as its already been 3 months and by now my pool is almost done. Fast forward to today columns are drilled and bolted to the pool deck exactly what I did not want . After it was completed, I was informed the columns could have been bolted to footings and deck poured around like I wanted. The only calls I got from Karl was asking me to tell my wife to remove her review which was multiple times. even today. I am happy with the installer Ken, his finished product looks good However the customer service from the owners, I give 0 stars . They did nothing at all for us to make up for the inconvenience and 3 months it took to finally get my patio. They care only about their money and Yelp not happy customers. Jmar construction installed our patio cover 14 years ago and it still looks great. It was the best investment we made to our house. It not only added value to our home but it made a huge difference in out outdoor living experience. Jmar personally worked with us in giving us an unbelievable deal. We had other estimates that came in 3x higher than Jmar construction. We wanted outdoor electrical wired into the patio cover so we could have outdoor fans installed. Sounds easy but the only access to the electrical was in a wall filled of pipes and other wires making it very difficult to run the power line. It took several hours to add the wires and a lot of persistence on their part to make it happen. They worked on it until it got done and they didn't charge us extra.
