We contracted Custom Outdoor Living (COL) to replace an existing BBQ and island. The project was projected to last 5 days. It ended up taking 3 weeks. This was due to a series of mistakes by the office staff and the installers. There were communication breakdowns between employees and with me the customer. I would have only given a one star review because they installed a natural gas grill and tried to pass it off as a propane grill. We found out from the grill manufacturer that this would be a DANGEROUS option. I am giving a three star, because they ended up replacing the grill and fixing a number of other problems. read more

I wish we had the same service as almost all the other reviews. We had been going on almost two years waiting for a project to be finished by Custom Outdoors. We had been told they were finished with the job, despite the job not being finished. Had to go through the contractors board (which takes months as well). The contractors board agreed, job was not finished. Finally had some resolution to at least that part of the job. The job was still not up to our standards, but the contractors board decided it was "good enough". They drilled into our allumawood patio cover and used a color that didn't even match to add a decorative slat. Then didn't even paint match all the things that they did to the rest of the cover either. Took about three times of asking to just get that part done. The tile backsplash, should have been sealed or something, as anytime there is smoke from the grill it leaves the tile dark and dirty. There were contractors on site who smoked and left old cigarette butts under the grill. It was insane. There was nobody it seemed to hold anyone accountable. We tried multiple times in the beginning to get in touch with the owner, Josh. He never could be bothered to even come out to the job site. Hopefully this was just a fluke and they don't normally have jobs go this bad. read more

We have used Josh' team for rebuilding our fire pit and also installing a bbq burner in the past. They did excellent work each time. This time we asked Corbin from Josh Custom Outdoor Living to redesign our bbq grill island to make it larger, providing adequate room for a new 44 inch TEC infrared grill, a Lion high btu side burner and more prep area. We also wanted something different for the island top. Josh came up with a very practical 'L' shaped island and helped us to select the Italian ceramic tile for the top. Their team did a super job demolishing and removing most of the original island (no easy task since it was built with a lot of rebar) and fabricating the new island. As you can see from the picture, they matched the original stucco and paint perfectly and we have a stunning and highly functionable grill island. read more

I wrote two previous reviews on Custom Outdoor Living (COL). I'm writing this third because I am using them again for another project: to install a pergola on a second floor patio/deck. COL is the best. I can't say enough positive things about them. The design they came up with for this outdoor addition/covering for the second floor balcony is outstanding. The architecture and detailing is top notch and contemporary. I worked with Corbin who's a genius. It's hard to explain all the details but trust me: my backyard pergolas are the talk of my neighborhood. The quality of the materials is the best. They do all the structural engineering and detailed plans. The workers are great (Frank is the head guy at my installation and he's the best). They are creative and innovative. I've been telling everyone to use COL and a builder friend of mine who builds high end homes in Ascaya was really impressed with them. Needed a fire pit rebuilt. Had seen Custom Outdoor Living's ad and checked their background. Josh (the owner) came out and reviewed the existing one. explained the alternatives and provided me an estimate while he was there. He was punctual and very professional. We shook on the proposal and he and his crew showed up on the agreed upon date, actually early, to do the work. They were very good. Removed all the existing materials including sand, rock and rusted pipes. Took it down to the main gas junctions at the fire pit wall which were in good shape. Installed all new pipes, wrapped them to protect them, new stainless steel fire rings, brought in new pea gravel, etc. Replaced the volcanic rock and ensured all was working properly. Then they totally cleaned up including vacuuming all around the fire pit, wiping down the stone, etc. It looks gorgeous and functions perfectly. His invoice price was exactly what was in his proposal. Highly recommend. They take pride in their work and it certainly shows. read more

We hired Josh to design and build our living space outdoors. From patio cover to bbq - and it turned out amazing. The project took about 4 weeks given the time of year. Josh is professional, cares about his clients, and stands by his work. His outsourced partners also had the same level of care and concern for the client's happiness. As with all projects of this size, there were a few snags here and there - to be expected. What I appreciated was their ability to resolve those, be responsive (text/call/meeting), and make sure in the end everything was excellent.
