I've been a customer at this Joann for many years, splurging on crafts, decor, floral, baking supplies. I haven't been to this location for a year or so and today was the first time I had stellar customer service worthy of a review. The first associate I encountered was a guy stocking shelves with witchy decor, he was lovely and cheery, it was a good interaction, he seemed so nice. Then when I had fabric cut, both of the women at the counter were lovely and the one who cut my fabric was fast and also kind and lovely! I realized my fabric choice was on major sale $13 down to $5 per yard, and asked her if I could have the rest of the roll, which she enthusiastically helped me with. Truly the only downside was a grouchy lady who jumped me in line, but another customer and I chuckled it off. There were a bunch of places where prices were missing or same signs were up with no label for discount in them. But I would prefer kind customer service to everything being perfectly laid out. The crown jewel of the store was Annie, who was the brightest light of my 2 hour journey at Joann. Annie was funny, kind, interacted with me like we were friends, scanned everything while I grabbed a few reusable bags and then when I spotted another larger reusable bag up high I wanted on the other side of the registers, she went and reached up to get me a few of them. What a gal. Annie, don't ever change. You are making Joann a better place and my day is better for having interacted with you. read more

I have been an avid crafter since I was 10 years old. I have purchased the bulk of my craft supplies from JoAnn for 51 years! I had $30 worth of JoAnn gift cards to use that was a Christmas present from a friend. When I saw they were going out of business, I decided to go to the Janesville, WI location to use them and picked out $115.00 worth of products. I went to the checkout and myself and my husband and I were shocked that they wouldn't honor them!!! We told the clerk to take a little over half of my items back because the company accepted the money for the cards and wouldn't honor them. That is beyond unimpressive and is taking $ from purchased gift cards and not letting me use them. IT IS ROTTON AND COMPLETELY WRONG TO TREAT A LOyAL CUSTOMER LIKE MYSELF! I, iniitially, felt sad about the business closing and now I think they royally deserve it. Thiefs are running the organization and their prices went up atronomically! I have shopped here for years, and it's never been good, but it was tolerable due to the lack of options. Yesterday changed that. I had ordered something, and was shipped something totally different. I came in to do the return. Judy, the salesperson, acted like I didn't buy it from Joann because she didn't recognize the brand. I brought it in in the box it was shipped in with my receipt that was for the same brand different item. After messing around with that, she told me she couldn't refund the shipping cost. I told her I understand the policy, but you can clearly see they shipped something I didn't order. "Didn't you read that on the website before you ordered," she snarled at me. Both her and the "manager" who didn't have a name tag or offer a name couldn't understand that I shouldn't pay for shipping when they sent the wrong order. "We have a policy," they kept saying. Does that policy include shipping things you don't order then expecting me to be accountable for that?? They didn't ship it, but they did nothing to help the situation, either. Asked one of the total of 3 staff I could see working (and totally overwhelmed) and they said they "couldn't hire people." But then said no FT jobs available...and pay is horrible. I had two needlework pieces framed at the framing shop. It was the worst job of framing I have ever seen. When I picked it up, I was shocked that the framer had not followed any of the things we had talked about or my instructions. It was off center, the stitches he used for stretching were showing, the sizes we agreed on were different - just awful unprofessional work. When I was told it had to be paid for up front, I should have left right then, and I am so sorry I didn't. DO NOT ever have anything framed at the JoAnn's Madison west side framing shop. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews, but I have had two bad experience here recently. I will share the latest. I brought a fabric remnant up to the counter. It was approximately a yard (just over) and was 50% off the original price because it was a remnant. I had a coupon for 20% off my total purchase INCLUDING sale items. However, the cashier told me that "the computer won't let you use the coupon because you already have a 50 percent off remnant discount." I pointed out that the same exact fabric I had in my had was available on the roll in the back back of the store and just happened to be on sale that week for...you guessed it, 50 percent off. So,if I walked back, got them to cut me a yard and brought it up to the front it would STILL be 50 percent off (aka: the same exact price as the one in my hand) AND I could use the coupon. She refused to try to override the system or call a manager and just suggested that I go get more myself. So I did. I had to walk back, get my fabric, wait in line (which is another issue - two employees working on the same customer's fabric...like 20 different kinds to cut - and only after the other customer suggested they help me instead of both working on hers did someone cut mine), get my fabric cut, walk back up, wait in line to check out and pay with my 20 percent coupon, which then worked. Ridiculous. They were the EXACT SAME piece of fabric. Luckily I am not a sewer and only need fabric a couple of times a year. I think next time I will look elsewhere... read more

Website advertised 2 hours for online pre-order. Got to store 2.5 hours later only to find out that they are behind filling orders. When asked how many hours behind, was informed that it was not hours but days!!!! Don't advertise 2 hours if you can't fulfill that. Ugh, Jo-Ann. We need to have a talk. On the surface you seem okay, but you've got some internal issues you need to work on. I want to like you, I do, but until you get yourself in gear I think we need to take some time apart. The good: + Brighter and much larger than its east-side counterpart + A huge selection including sewing supplies that other craft stores lack + Constant sales and coupons The bad: - On every occasion it is nearly impossible to find a sales associate who isn't on a register or cutting fabric. If you have a question or need assistance, too bad! The ugly: - My last visit was likely the final straw, at least for awhile. It was a one-star experience. I needed a specific, tiny item that I was not able to locate in the rows and rows of sewing supplies. I made about three passes on my own and decided to ask for help. I walked a loop around the entire store and couldn't find a single person on the sales floor. There were about ten people in line for getting fabric cut and five or so in line to check out so I hopped in the checkout line. When I got to a cashier I pulled out my phone and showed the item I needed on the Jo-Ann website which said there were 6 of each color in stock. Cashier: Oh, we definitely have those. Me: I wasn't able to find them. C: They're in the sewing area, by the snaps. Me: I looked there multiple times and wasn't able to find them. C: Well, we definitely have them. Try looking again. Me: ......... Me: Okay, thanks. Proper customer service would have had her volunteer to help me find it, or radioing for someone who could help me find it. I stated I'd looked several times and was still having trouble, but the response was to look again. In fairness, directing me to the snaps was helpful and I was able to locate one (not twelve, as the "up-to-date" website listed). The lone item near the bottom and hanging all the way to the back, aka obscured by other items because it wasn't pulled to the front like everything else. So, not so terrible, right? Annoying, but I survived. My journey was not complete, though. When I walked back to the front the line had grown to be 15-20 people deep. It roped through the checkout lane and back into the fabric area. Someone had finally emerged onto the floor and was tidying up to the right of the registers. One woman stepped out of line to request more checkouts being open, because she saw only one checker (one was set farther back and difficult to see). The tidying woman poked her head around, said, "Oh no, there're two," and went back to arranging items. Seriously?! Again, the correct response would have been to open up another register, radio for someone to open another register, have a manager open a register, or, if there really was no one else who is cash-trained/authorized, to then explain to the person who asked and everyone in line that you apologize for the delay but everyone who is able to be on checkout is and they look forward to serving you as fast as they can. Being dismissive of the request with a contradictory statement is not how you handle things. So, in the end, I had the displeasure of spending about 45 minutes in the store to buy one $5 elastic clip, with about 25 of those minutes spent standing in line, twice. I've been to Joann's a few times to casually browse but lately I've been visiting more. (The addition of a sewing machine helps) I've read a few reviews about staff and proper customer service and agree that it could be improved. However I think its important to remember that shortness of staff is as frustrating to us as customers as it is for the employees. They do need to hire more people but I think it requires patience on our side too. The first time I went was in a Sunday. Big mistake (especially since the Packers are no longer playing) on my part. Things to avoid on post season Sundays: shopping and driving. Best advice? Tuesday or mid-week afternoons or online pick up. With that being said I online ordered a handful of items and followed the advice of the email of not going in till later. After a few hours I hadn't received any word and decided to drop by before going to an appointment nearby. I waited in line and was helped fairly promptly. The woman has helped me before and when I brought up that she was previously helpful she laughed and said she remembered me and the story about my husband. So sweet and was awesome help. They didn't have it ready since they were so busy but the gentleman at the next register (despite my saying I'd return later) ran to get my items and ring me up. Honestly I didn't care that it wasn't ready. It was only two hours it'd been out and I was more than happy to return later with them being so busy. I didn't expect the world to stop for me (another thing 'Mercia should keep in mind) and know they have more important things to do and a schedule to keep. I think it's important to remember patience. That employees are people as well who get frustrated and annoyed at the same things that we find frustrating and annoying. It's management's issue to fix the shortness of staff but it's our job to be decent beings. I honestly don't see their staff as the problem. Management NEEDS to provide better support. Employees who feel supported work harder and ultimately provide excellent customer service. We need to smile and ask them about their day. They don't bite! read more

I hate chain stores. I wish I could find a local place. First - I get in there and it is always so messy. There is no rhyme or reason or organization to the store. Second - Once I get my fabric, I have to wait twenty minutes for it to get cut. I get so upset when people have questions and they walk up to the fabric cutters and steal them away. We are all waiting in line, please tell them you CANNOT help them. Third - I was told to buy supplies for a class. I wasted $10 after paying $17.50 for the class on materials that ended up being provided for me. I find that I get overwhelmed when I go there. The workers tend to be knowledgeable on basic ideas, but I have been "helped" right into three wrong purchases. One left me with the wrong needles, the wrong thread and an overpriced option. I just wish that some of the prerequisite for working at Jo-Ann's was actual knowledge of sewing, crafts and the products. Oh corporate America, one day I will escape your sewing store. read more

My first review of a Jo-Ann franchise. Let's get this nostalgic exhaustion out of the way! My mother and aunt would ALWAYS drag me to a Jo-Ann's when I was a half-pint kiddo. The "hours and hours and hours" spent, combined with the smell of the store makes me instantly exhausted this day in age. Therefore, I try to make things quick. I always find yarn for knitting projects, no problem. Easy in, easy out. I stop once every few months with a friend to look at baking supply items...and then I beg them to shop locally. With mild success. If you've been to Jo-Ann's before...you know what you're getting...and you know what you're getting yourself into! Anyway, staff is hit or miss, but with my friendly demeanor ;) it's usually a hit. Like a Starbucks, a Barnes & Noble, a Target, any general chain, it will take a lot to up-sell or downgrade a Jo-Ann's Fabrics in my most humble of opinions! read more

Unfortunately I encountered an employee who shared with me her displeasure at having to work EVERY YEAR THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING. Seriously, lady? It's the busiest shopping day of the year and at least you have a job (unlike myself). Keep your "harrumph" to yourself. This place is OK, generally go to others places but will come here if I have a coupon or if I can't find something somewhere else. Pretty pricy and there is never staff to help you. Its such a big store and I always walk down several aisles before I can find what I'm looking for or an employee to help. I hate writing bad reviews and I would love to give the benefit of the doubt, but I've never had such terrible customer service in my life. Heres why: 1) After waiting in line for 20 minutes to ask for help, we had not one, but two cashiers look at us like we were crazy when we said that we needed some help. 2) Even though both cashiers said they would send someone to help us, we waited for 15 minutes - and no one ever came. 3) After being frustrated by a total lack of customer service, we were ready to check out and leave. When the cashier asked us if we found everything alright, we said no. Her response? "That sucks. We're understaffed. Want a bag?" And we never got a bag. Let's just say this store is barely surviving, no one is thriving in this store. I've lived all around the US and I can confidently say this is the most chaotic neutral Joann's I've ever been to. And I've lived in New Jersey and the south. Like nothing is on the shelves, one checkout line with 30+ people waiting in line. I walked towards the fabric counter because I needed some hot pink sequin fabric (I mean, who doesn't? And they don't even have any options??) - overheard one customer say to another that the numbered ticket system had been abandoned and it was everyone for themselves. Seriously. So I decided to head out and try ordering online. Walking out I passed a woman with her family walking in to the store. She looked around and said to her family, "we don't have time for this." And she turned around and left. No one has time for this Joann's, Madison. No one. I'm sure the people working there are just doing their best trying to survive and I thank them for their courage. Big, but lacking. Back when this store opened (8 years-ish ago) it was pretty fab - though it always seemed to not have as much fabric as many smaller JoAnn's. It's gotten a bit more unkempt in recent years. My recent visit found it in the middle of a minor remodel/reshuffle and finding things was tricky. In addition to having to run all over the store to find things, they -as always - only had 2 cashiers working and a checkout line wrapping around the designated area and back onto the salesfloor. This ALWAYS seems to happen there. And while I happened to get a perky cashier on this particular visit, I tend to be met by rather surly employees. Still, I come back though, as it has things that can't be found in other places. But I usually leave a little annoyed. This store is decent, but it does have the capacity to be awesome if it tried a bit harder. read more

The staff at this store is really hit or miss. I have had great experiences. I recently had a very sour experience with one of the managers, whom I think is named Kat. I came in to ask a question about why my student discount didn't work with a coupon I had used, because on a previous purchase I had made they both worked. She told me only one discount was allowed, and I was surprised and said "Really?". She proceeded to look at me and say "I have worked here five years I think I would know." then huffed off without another word. As much as I like Joann's, rude staff is a huge turn off. read more

I've been shopping here for the past 4+ years and I've always known they had their issues, but I just always gave them the benefit of the doubt. I always found it fun to shop here, but lately, an incident is leaving a very sour taste in my mouth. I'm never going to shop here again. I placed an order online to pick up in-store the next day. According to the website, there were 2 in stock. The Tuesday of the following week was my friend's birthday and I found something that I thought would be perfect for her. That night, my order was CANCELLED without any indication as to why. I only received an email saying it was cancelled. I called them and asked them about it. They said they couldn't find it. They claimed the website was wrong and that they didn't actually have it in stock. REALLY? Whatever. They said they would restock on Monday and to pick it up on Tuesday instead. I just placed an online order and had it delivered, but that was turning out just as bad because it wouldn't deliver until Thursday. WHATEVER. I told my friend it would be two days late. THEN, I find that the stock on the website for the store changed from 2 to 1. SOMEONE WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE IT. HUH??? DID THE EMPLOYEES EVEN ACTUALLY LOOK FOR IT? My online order finally shipped yesterday, but it wouldn't arrive until Monday, so I called them today (my friend's birthday is today) to see if I could pick up the remaining one or if they had managed to restock the items. (I was planning on returning the online ones at this point because they lied about when it would be delivered, not my fault). The store told me there were no updates and I should check in again next Monday. WHY DIDN'T THEY MAKE SURE TO RESTOCK THEM IF THEY KNEW I WAS WAITING ON THEM? They just washed their hands clean of the problem and stopped caring. No, they never cared. Otherwise, they would have reached out from the beginning. They don't care about the customers at all. I give up. This store is full of incompetence and disorganization and apathy. I've been shopping there for more than 4 years, but they've completely destroyed my faith and trust in them. I've been disappointed in the customer service I have received at this store - I've visited a couple of times. My most recent visit was the worst. I was in to return a few unused items I had purchased for Christmas crafts. After reading on the wall "no hassle returns" I was disappointed in the service I received which was anything but friendly or pleasant. While the cashier was completing the he return, she twice mumbled under her breadth about the hassle of holiday returns. When she completed the return, I said thank you. Terrible. I always come out of there feeling miserable. Most do not know what they are doing or do not belong in a craft store...... sorry burlap allergy? Not a place to work then for you.... Just saying. And no one can cut a straight line.... maybe a few, but most cannot. I wish I could say good things, but everytime I go, I sink when I come out. And there is never a sale. Trust me. The coupons are good for full price items.... everything else constantly has a sale price on them so they are not actually good for a coupon... frustrating... Everything is always "on sale". Drove in from Sauk for painting supplies and was shocked at the messes everywhere, every aisle! There were random items mixed in with items actually from that department, many shelves and racks were empty as they hadn't been stocked in a long while. There were items on the floor in many aisles, everything from costume parts to skeins of yarn, rikrak, etc..There were boxes of mixed items in different parts of the store, and near unused checkout lanes, stuff stacked in shopping carts piled taller than me, one box partially blocking the exit door as tyou leave. When I finally found my 3 items, I saw there were 23 people in line in front of me, only 2 cashiers, both having to answer the phones as they rang customers out. Cashier was very polite, and pleasant, which made up for the 25 minute wait in line to check out. Then, I get home, open the tubes of watercolor paint I traveled there to buy, (SimplyArt brand), and so far, 3 of the 12 tubes have colors in them different than what the label says you are getting! I specifically came for the shades of plums and purples and so far, have not found a single tube of anything purple. Very, very saddened with my experience there. Management needs to consider a major cleaning, stocking, and perhaps hiring enough cashiers and floor salespeople to answer customer's questions. It was a frustrating mess! No excuse. I can see if they had a bad day with employees out sick or something, but it was apparent this store has not been cleaned in a long time. read more
