Honestly, this location is the closest to me and I still go there but I get frustrated because the store is severely understaffed and unorganized. Boxes everywhere and the shelves half the time look bare. I've even applied there and never heard back from the manager but it says they are hiring. It's almost like they don't want the help. I just called because I need to finish a last minute Christmas gift and the website says that my yarn is in stock but when I called to double check the lady told me that it's still in the back and not available. Half the time I'm waiting in the curbside parking spot for 20 minutes at a time before I give the store a call to tell them I'm out here. I've even been told that they cancelled my order because they didn't want me to come in. This locations employees are highly unprofessional and most times rude and if they workers can't do their jobs tasks then they shouldn't be there. If this wasn't the closest location to me I wouldn't return there. Just terrible. read more

Needed to pick up some fabric for an embroidery machine to test out with some tension and speed on a machine. It appears this store is closing, there are tons of empty shelves here and lots of clearance sections. The staff informed us it's just the end of the season clearance, they aren't planning on closing a. Their performance fabric by the yard isn't bad, $10/yard. Service staff in the fabric are quick and helpful. They can only cut fabric in a single direction, so, it's not possible to get 8" squares cut out at all. Not so deft in crafts, so this is probably only my 5th or 6th time in a Joann store. My kind of art tends to be more fitting on canvas. They sell round shank embroidery machine needles here too. read more

I wasn't going to leave a review for this location because I only did curbside pickup, but the two-star average on Yelp makes me feel compelled to leave a review. I have been wanting to get some frames for some Etsy prints I bought a while back but I didn't want to go into stores if I didn't have to. I checked out JoAnn's website and also Michael's; JoAnn's had the better deals and also the website was easier to use. I got a great deal on three frames, they were like $4.99 each on sale plus I got another 20% off so it was only about $12 for three. I did curbside pick up today, which FYI is right in the front of the store entrance (there are no curbside parking spaces like Target does), and it was pretty fast. The only reason that this location gets four stars and not a five-star review from me is because the frames are pretty cheap, quality-wise - which is why I like to shop in store for frames normally. I placed an online order for pick up at the Madison Heights location. I did not receive a notification that my order was ready, but since the order was placed the day prior I decided to go see if the order was ready anyways. Upon arrival, my order wasn't ready. No big deal just asked if I could be directed to where I would find iron on patches. The selection was extremely picked over and could not find the same ones I had ordered. I asked for further assistance in which they said they had "6 months of inventory in the back that needed to be sorted through". I mentioned my online order that I placed the day prior. Their response was "if I didn't receive an email my order was not ready and they could not tell me when my order would be ready." So frustrated. I placed 2 online orders almost a week ago. No email for curbside pick up. I have tried calling the store all day (11 am to now, 4:47 pm). I got busy signals until an hour ago. Now it gives me the closed speel and hangs up. How am I even supposed to get stuff if I had an email telling me its ready? I called Roseville to see if phones were all down and someone picked up within 1 ring. I simply don't get it. I have emailed corporate for days and no response either. Curbside has been around before this pandemic, so how can this process be so broken. So...been 5 days since I ordered and just left. I've been calling for several days and just getting a busy signal, even at the curb. Knock on the door holding a sign with order number and she ignores us. Finally comes out and tells us they purposely turn their phones off. So if I have a curbside and instructed to call to let them know I am here, how can I do that? Really terrible system. I feel for the staff, but have some sort of system in place to take curbside orders and process other calls. I've gotten different stories from different Joanns, but it seems this store likes to make excuses instead of being solution focused. I know everything has been turned sideways with the world in its current state, but I was beyond disappointed with online ordering at Joanns. It was easy to order online, but picking up was a whole other story. They were running about a week behind schedule, even though it said same day pick up. When I tried to call, I had to call almost 15 times to even get through. This was to find out they were so behind. I didn't even get an email or notice that they were running behind. When I finally got notification that my order was ready, I had to wait in about a 45 minute car line to even let them know my order number. It was then that I realized that they only had one person working. This is completely unacceptable. If there are so many orders, they should have more then one person working. I go to this Jo-Ann because I have to, not because I want to. I've shopped in a lot of craft stores and, having worked in retail, I'm usually pretty laid back. That said, it's almost always an agitating experience shopping here. ... So here I am. It consistently takes forever to get in and out of the store. The people working are very nice, so it doesn't seem to be their fault. It feels like they could use another 2-4 people working at any given time. When workers are tied up cutting and ringing, there's nobody floating on the floor to answer questions. There are often check out lines of 10-15 people in the middle of the day. The facilities themselves feel old, cluttered and dirty. The floors have dust bunnies floating around. The layout is confusing. If you can avoid this location and shop at a different Jo-Ann, do that and save yourself a headache. read more

I received an email saying they received my order and that I would hear from them soon about the status of the order. I have contacted Customer Service and they passed me along to "upper- management." The upper management person said she would call the warehouse and look into it. She then emailed me that I would hear from them soon with shipping information. That was a week ago. I emailed them again to tell her I never heard from shipping. I received a message that my concern would be passed to upper management. They asked me to give them three business days to respond to my concern. Here we go again. Now I discovered you can't cancel orders from them even if they have not sent it out or even processed it. They allow you to cancel if THEY haven't responded to you after a month. That is terribly poor customer service in my book. I will not shop at Joann Fabric again. I have wasted hours trying to get my order to process. I have decided that if my product ever arrives, I will return it. I will not contribute a dime to this store and its lack of respect for customers. read more

Joann is the Target of the craft world. Chances are, what you're looking for you can find in their store, as long as it's not too much of a specialty item. Their website features a vast array of all colours, textiles, and styles of whatever you might need. The Madison Heights location is my nearest outpost of crafty craftsmanship, and given proximity to Target, it's actually quite easy to get in and out of. Convenience plays a major role in how I end up in here. That said, the parking lot and store layout do not accommodate a pile of people nearly so well as other stores (looking at you, Auburn Hills, high-five) so you are highly advised to dress accordingly if you go at a busy time. You may be trudging. This store is just okay in my eyes. I appreciate it often has what I want stocked, but it suffers from cramped confines and a lot of guests who shuffle things up. I can't tell you the number of times I went in to find a standard item and either never located it, or found it buried somewhere shelves away from the original location. Very annoying. You're fairly safe for fabric and the front seasonal cap materials, but the situation grows more disorderly the further back into the store you journey. I knock off a star for simply having trouble acquiring what I'm looking for without studiously checking the website a half hour before I show up. This is especially true for sale and knitting supplies. Yarn frequently wanders off or ends up as an empty bin. Need three greens? I consistently locate one. Size 9 needles? Oh, all out except the $15 bamboo ones. In short, I have to plan and drop-in ideas are never very good. Staff are helpful -- when you can find them. If not welded by ball and chain to the cutting counter, good luck finding them at peak season or hours. I think the store is a bit understaffed because the lines never seem to shorten at the front counter or the cutting counter. Those you do find are knowledgeable, but harried and rushed, usually chased by four other customers desperate to find this chimerical image of an endangered species. Sometimes, I need help interpreting what goes with what, and this is especially true for fabric. I'm no walking crafty encyclopedia, and sometimes just snagging my sister-in-law as a font of lore is better, but less convenient. So, you get what you want some of the time and deal with the couponing hordes who amass here. The cashiers work hard, though they can be absolutely swamped by the coupon collectors who pile up $93.00 in savings on $21.00 in items. Yeah, well, go figure how that works. The secret of Joann is that everything is either on partial sale or subject to a coupon, so walking out without a discount is like the surest way of showing you don't do this regularly. I make that walk of shame now and then too. VERDICT: 2.75 stars Service: 2.5 stars - Finding someone when you need help is tough. The cutting counter can take forever! Stock: 3 stars - I can usually find what I'm looking for, but always check ahead of time first. The staff at the Madison Heights store is " pro customer service" without a doubt. When the pandemic hit, I had already registered for several classes. Melanie, who I believe is in management, reached out to me and made certain that I was reimbursed for each class, taking the time to reach the right people to allow it to happen. Her follow through was exceptional.I had the most pleasant experience with her. Recently I expressed interest in one on one instruction , to abide by the covid safety protocols , if any instructor was interested. A wonderful staff member , Perry, was available to assist me. While I'm waiting see see what happens, I wanted to share my great experience with this store and these two exceptional ladies. This location has major issues with inventory control and online order processing. If you order online expect 50% of your order to come back cancelled because the items are not in stock, but if you look the next day they will still say the store has them available for pickup. Even during the pandemic I haven't has this problem (at least not to such a degree) at most other locations. They also take 1 week minimum to prepare an order for curbside pickup, while other locations have been fulfilling orders much faster. As other reviews said, they do not answer the phone. Ever. If you go there to pick up a curbside order you must wait in line until they come to your car and get your information, then go into the store and retrieve the order... there is far more in-person contact than is necessary. read more

I received a confirmation email that instructed me to wait for another email for pick up time. And waiting and waiting. Order placed 5/12. Figuring 5 days to process the order I would be on schedule. Checking Joann app for this location shows store closed 5/14 through 5/23! Where is my order? No answer. When will I be able to "pick it up "? This is unacceptable business practice. Avoid Joann. This Joann's is what some would call a "hot mess." The store is always over crowed and the lines are ALWAYS long. The people that work there seem knowledgeable in their information and the products in their store. But the only thing they lack is enthusiasm. I am not saying you have to be super happy to work a $8 per hour job, but a little smile wouldn't hurt. I do really love the fabric section at this store. They seem to have the freshest and newest options of most Joann's which is nice. And they always seem to keep this section up the most. So the fabric is organized by colors, textures, and prices. I love making blankets and pillows with fun fabrics so it works out. Their seasonal section is always over picked, which kinda of makes me sad. It's like you know you are a busy store! Orders from every other JoAnn location is ready the following day you place your online order, or at most 3 days. This location takes a minimum of eight day (even if you order one item). To make matters worse they won't answer their phone or emails. There's no way to contact them. First visit- waited 45 minutes upon arrival at the store to pick up order. No one came out to help the 15+ cars lined up in front of the store for 30 minutes. No one inside would answer the phone. Order took 8 days to prepare 2nd visit- due to construction arrived at the store at 6:02 (store closes at 6). Spoke with associate explained I lived 45 minutes away and got stuck In traffic. Would not hand me my already paid for order because it was an too much of an inconvenience to them. Would not answer phone. read more

Today was my first visit to a Joanns Fabric store. I will never return. If I could give the place zero stars, I would. The reviewer who said it was a "fluorescent hellhole" was absolutely correct. Dust everywhere, a filthy floor, poorly-marked aisles, many shelves bare of merchandise, bolts of fabric lying on the floor, a ladder completely blocking an aisle (on a Saturday afternoon) with no employee in sight to move it, prices neither marked nor on shelf tags. Quilting supplies were in two separate locations in the store, far apart. No help on the floor, so I had to walk up to the front of the store to ask a cashier call for help. The person who responded to the call did not know where to find the item I was looking for, or even what it was, despite the fact that it's a very commonly used quilting notion. She just shrugged and said, "I don't know what that is." When I asked her if she could ask another employee where it was located, her response was, "Well, we're pretty busy now." When I finally found the fabric I wanted, I had to wait in line for 40 minutes to have it cut. Forty minutes! This was while the employees at the cutting table chatted with each other and slowly finished each customer's cutting order. No sense of urgency to get through the line. Apparently, store management sees no need to have sufficient employees on the floor and at the cutting table on a day - Saturday - that is a peak shopping day at fabric stores. The line at the cash registers moved a bit faster however I was dismayed to see that some registers were closed despite the fact that there were at least 25 people in line waiting to pay. When I got to the end of the line, I felt as if I was interrupting a party between the cashiers, who were calling across the store to one another about their weekend plans. All told, it took 75 minutes to buy one quilting notion and three yards of fabric. I couldn't wait to leave the store. You couldn't pay me to go back. read more

Oh boy...for some reason I feel bad giving this place a meh-review...probably because it is my local/go-to Jo-Ann. I'm here at least twice a week since it's cheaper for me to use their 40%-off coupons than to pay for the materials I need wholesale+freight. The good: I can honestly say I've never had a bad experience with the people working here. A few apathetic or lackluster experiences, sure. But never bad. This location more than any other is friendly enough to inquire about what I'm making, etc. Parking: Do yourself a favor if you're here anytime other than early on a weekday morning, and park just south of the Dunham's. It'll spare you a lot of stress and fighting with the Target shoppers for a spot. The bad: This isn't exclusive to THIS Jo-Ann (and I've been to a LOT), but if you're brave/foolhardy enough to shop for fabric during one of their BIG fabric sales, bring along your patience, fortitude, and probably a Kindle e-book for after you snatch your next-in-line ticket. You'd think management would have every single station staffed...but no. I can't complain about the employees at all, except to say this...when I visit Guildcrafters in Berkley, they automatically pile up four bolts and cut them together (with an inch leeway!) if I'm ordering the same amount, as opposed to cutting each bolt one-by-one (of the same brand! just different colors!). If this is a corporate thing, please feel free to tell me so, because it's maddening! I do really miss the Jo-Ann superstore on Telegraph from when I worked Downriver...but this one will do for my basic needs. I just wish they'd open up one here!!! read more

I suppose I'm partial to the Novi location given that it has not the single floor but two floors of merch, a friendlier staff and is easier to navigate with wider aisles. On my mom's recommendation of choice purveyors I went looking for a quality iron for pressing shirts and slacks. The Madison Heights location is closest to my house so I started there. I found a small selection of Rowenta products but their prices were a little high after comparing them to Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. I'm just not really a fan of this location. The plaza it sits in is rundown and it's usually a mad house with rude people milling about but it will work in a pinch depending on what you're looking for. read more

Then when I got to the front one of my items didn't scan up right so they had to get a worker to go with me back to where I found the items check the price. Turns out the item was in the wrong place because the whole place is disorganized. Definitely the perfect place to find nick nacks or do-it-yourself tools and equipment. I picked up quite a few hobby's within the last 6 months. Deco and mesh wreaths, knitting, jewelry repair, you name it. What I find to be most helpful is having a coupon readily available upon check out. Some items can be expensive, and almost always there is a 50% coupon on their mobile app. The best part about that is their mobile coupons and their ability to scan them straight from the app. My only criticism revolves around my experience with the employees. In my experience, they aren't too familiar with where specific items are kept. For instance, I was asking about a tool that would hole punch a penny for a necklace, the employee responded as if to guess and gave me quite a few places to look. I've had this experience on a few occasions. I figure they hire so many part-time employees they don't become fully aware of all the stock to be as helpful as they should be. The Madison Heights store is woefully understaffed--always, regardless of time of day or season. Signage is ambiguous and even the managers don't understand what is on sale. Because of the poor signage it's often a crap shoot if your coupon will be honored when you finally arrive to the cashier. Hope like hell that your fabric--carefully washed in cold water with no other items-- doesn't bleed because the return process is ludicrous. You'll have to wait in the interminably long cut table line to have the piece remeasured to make sure you're not returning less than you purchased. And then--you get to wait in the super long line to get to the cashier to get your refund. So--they sell poor quality goods and then punish you for having the gall to return the item. Call the manager to voice your complaints? She'll hang up on you. Call the Hudson, Ohio customer service? They'll say within 24 hours a regional representative will contact you but I can say after 5 days that that's probably not going to happen either. Also note, if you purchase a custom frame and they give you a due date know that's merely a suggestion. I had an order that was 12 days past its due date and I had to spend 2 hours to get my art back because I had to take it out of town to present as an unframed wedding gift. A day or two--well that happens but almost 2 weeks and have to involve two managers then that's just really bad customer service.   And the cashiers? Well, some seem to be swift and expedient, while others want to chit chat despite the really long lines and then there are the ones who are incredulous because you want to use your 20% off coupon on a $3.85 bill. Hey, it's my money so don't judge. And by the way, Joann you could probably get 15 more people an hour through the line if you stopped printing all those coupons at the cash register. This place is great if you are a midwestern 80 year old woman with a house full of crafty cow ornaments, who loves to crochet sweaters for your smelly dachshund, and makes camouflage quilts for your son, the hunter. For everyone else, you gotta search those aisles high and low for useful fabric and materials. The fabric selection is great if you are looking for 4 kinds of camouflage, or kooky krazy prints. I expect stores to be wheelchair accessible and clear of clutter. So it disappointed me when I told an employee someone had broken a huge Christmas bulb and there was glass everywhere could they clean it up because I needed to go down that aisle and after 15 minutes I decided to seek someone else. I asked for the manager and explained that I am on wheels and can not go over glass but I really needed something down that aisle. So the manager walks over to the aisle and with her feet push the glass out of the way and said there you go. I said as thorough as you think you are there are probably little splinters of glass that your shoe didn't get and you should probably get a broom but I'm not telling you how to do your job. I decided to just leave because I felt that was ridiculous just when I heard a little girl start crying. Her mom was looking at the ornaments and her daughter (maybe 3 years old) picked up some shiny pieces of broken ornament off the ground. I said I just told them about this issue 20 minutes ago since my tires going flat wasn't a big deal maybe they would be more concerned knowing your little girl cut her finger on the glass. The mom was irate to say the least but it was a little amusing listening to her go off on the manager who then told the mom well why is she picking up shiny pieces of glass? Hello....she's 3! This isn't a stable as far as I know, so I'm not sure why the employees all had long faces. Stopped in on Halloween weekend during the evening to pick up a few extra supplies to complete my costume and the store was booming. I was wondering if I had time warped to Black Friday but on further inspection realized I was safe since there was still a decent selection of Halloween decorum around. Whew. You could tell a few customers were getting slightly unruly because of course they were somehow special and shouldn't have to deal with a wait but what did not help the atmosphere was the fact that the employees (and I mean every single one I interacted with or saw interacting with another customer) seemed like they were about to take the plastic axes, swords, and other costume accessories and impale us with them. I tried to be as pleasant as possible and was able to win one of the three women over but I mean why am I doing all the work here? The other two were lost causes. I asked how they were doing, said my thank yous and goodbyes to pretty much blank stares. This increased traffic can't be something new, most retail establishments know their patterns, so I'm just wondering why the fact that the checkout/fabric cutting line was snaking into the abyss was making the employees mad? They have to be there anyway right? Luckily I was able to find everything I was looking for or the equivalent of so no complaints there, though the stores setup leaves something to be desired. But after hearing the following interaction I left a bit shell shocked: Customer- "Is this sold by the yard or do you buy the whole thing?" (Holds up ribbon) Employee- "Read it" Customer- "It doesn't say" (Starts reviewing the spool again) Employee- (Staring) "Yes it does" (Turns around) Ahhhh! Is that a plastic grenade coming!? Never again.
