I have been going to Joe's since I was a kid and although the owners have changed, the pizza has not!!! This is by far the BEST "upside down" pizza. The OG joint had a fire when I was kid, and moved twice since then but still stayed in the 'boro. If you like sausage the pepperoni and sausage is a must very bite you will have sausage!! I wanted to show my wife and father in law the difference between pizza and tomato pie. I picked Joe's because it was open and they had a good Yelp rating. When I ordered the tomato pie he asked "is this an order for tomorrow sir?" I said I would like one now. He said "well we have a shell that we can top." This should have been my cue to say "thanks anyway" but I figured I would give it a shot. Here is my very quick diagnosis. Sauce good. Everything else very, very bad. The "shell" was like crispy cardboard. They pulled the pie out of the oven and placed it in the box. We ate it immediately and it wasn't even warm. They put a pathetic amount of parmesan on top too. Maybe their actual tomatoe pie is good but the alternative should not even be available. read more

Greasy. Bottom bun drenched in grease, both paper plates soaked in grease. aluminum foil stuck to paper plates with soaked through grease. I guess if you like a soaked through cheesesteak you found the right place. ...also was charged a fee for using a debit card to pay instead of cash. read more

Even though my boyfriend and I have lived in the area for a couple years now, we only recently discovered how good Joe's is- it's the only place we've tried that actually makes their wings extra crispy when we ask! Tonight I placed an order for a pizza and wings, and when I came to pick it up, they realized they had never done the wing order. The employees were so kind and apologetic and completely owned up to any mistake that was made, which is all I can ask for! Everyone makes mistakes, but the wonderful customer service is what I'll remember. They even threw in an antipasto and celery and blue cheese, which they didn't have to do. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to work in the food service industry right now- in the midst of a pandemic, and during the playoffs! I'm very disappointed in the new owners at Joe's Pizza, ive ordered a few times, and twice the food was overcooked, some of it burnt, not enough sauce on the wings, the sauce was spilled all over the onion rings. i took half of my order back to prove it to them. I was told I would get a phone call, I'm still waiting. this was in January. they are obviously not going to make it right, they got their money. I've been going there for years. Philly i miss ya!!! I grew up in w'boro and this was one of my go to spots back in the hay day. But that last two experiences I have had makes me wonder how this place stays in business. Today I ordered a small pizza. The wait time was 45 min. Pretty long for a Tuesday but it's o.k. Once I got the pizza home it was very crispy, dry and cold. Like it has been sitting around for at least 40 min. It is very disappointing seeing the quality go down like this over the last few years and hope to see it get better. But next time I will be buying a frozen pizza from Hannaford. read more

What can I say about Joe's pizza? Their light and crispy crust made from scratch with their sauce always made fresh daily making them one of the best pizza joint in the area. Not your ordinary slice of pizza, Joe's makes their pies with the sauce on top an cheese on the bottom giving it a unconventional twist that I swear will blow you away. Joe's wings are also just as good as their pizzas. Their wings are humongous and amazingly delicious especially their everything wings. Make sure when you order to ask to make them extra crispy because they taste 10x better that way. Overall, Joe's pizza is one best pizza joint I've had. This is the best pizza in the world. How I wish I could get quality like this in the islands. The sauce is tangy yet mild. Occasionally you get a rogue bay leaf in the sauce, which is fine. They use pre-baked shells, which are crispy and light, and not too over-filling, and never greasy. The cheese is generously given and so delicious. The sausage pizza with the home-made sausage pressed over the entire pizza is fantastic as well. When I'm in the area I usually buy at least five at a time. not the 'best pizza in the world' c'mon! much like the beer world and the trend to higher end beers, there are some artisans putting out some high end pies, Joe's ain't one of them. BUT, having said that, it is unique, great sauce on top of the cheese and mushrooms. I always thought it combined the best of pizza and tomato pie (if you don't know what that is, add it to your bucket list just behind utica greens and chicken riggies). Not a huge menu but who cares. When I'm in the Utica area, home to too many good pizzas to count, Joe's is my pick. Price is great, people nice. This is the standard in upside down pizzas. I grew up on Joe's since the family moved there in the late 1950's. A few years later, growing up in town, we did the Joe's ritual most Friday nights, or if not, on Saturday. The pizza simply melts in your mouth. Granted, we usually almost always get the sausage and green peppers. But the quality of the sausage, which goes on the pizza immediately on top of the crust, is simply superb. A bit of spice (believe they are fennel seeds) makes it just perfect. Plenty of cheese, nice firm crust, not too thick, superb sausage. The flavor is impeccable. Baked to perfection. Some outsiders are not fond of "upside down" pizza, from reading a lot of reviews. But if you're visiting Utica, and want to try one, Joe's is the place to go. If not Joe's, try Trio's. Same basic recipe. This pizza will not stuff you up. It is the flavor that wins. The sauce is simply stewed tomato sauce. But the simple flavor nicely complements the overall pizza experience. A very nice balance. Wish I could buy some here in the midwest. I guess I'll have to wait til my next visit to Utica. In the meantime, I have created a clone, but it's not the same. Absolutely the best pizza in Central NY. If I could, I'd move you guys down here to North Carolina to show them how it's done the New York way. The pizza made it more than 700 miles safe and sound. Of course, now that it's cooking in our oven in Raleigh, it won't be safe and sound for much longer.
