If I could give this place negative five stars, I would happily do it. Let's start with the service. When I walked in, there was no one at the register. Not a single person acknowledging customers. I stood there wondering if ordering food required a scavenger hunt or a prayer. Now let's talk about the food... because that's where things really went downhill. The photo attached might look like mashed potatoes, but surprise -- it's actually supposed to be mac and cheese. Dry, clumpy, and looking like it lost the will to live hours ago. I poked it just to make sure it was food and not drywall paste. And the ambience? Just as disappointing. The whole place felt unwelcoming and poorly kept, which perfectly matched the quality of the food and service. So to summarize: Horrible food. Horrible service. Horrible atmosphere. This may just be the BEST chicken chain ever! We enjoyed our entire meals from beginning to end! I ordered two jumbo tenders with garlic parm fries and it was excellent! The chicken was seasoned to perfection. I loved that the fries were tossed in the parm garlic and it wasn't just sprinkled on top. We barely needed the sauces we ordered because the food was just that good! We were greeted warmly upon arrival and the cashier was very kind while giving us suggestions. This isn't it. I tried to order online, which said orders were supported through 8:15. It was 8 pm. I called to order and informed her of want I wanted to order. There was a language barrier. She was very annoyed. When I got there she explained that the special ended at 8 pm. When I finally understood, I said okay I still want it at full price. I did not get what I ordered. I only received the Mac and cheese (don't waste your time), old oil soaked Parmesan fries (that I couldn't eat), a really great kale salad, nuggets, and chicken strips, both of which were good. I also got 4 drinks for $47. What I was supposed to receive was a meal that would feed four people. It was a special on Yelp and in store that I can no longer find, less than 24 hours later. It included four sides, four drinks, nuggets, strips, dipping sauce. That is what I expected for $47. Please see the picture for a better understanding of the extremely small portion sides. Yes, I informed the lady I still wanted the exact meal I intended to order for the special. It is not what I received. Service was not good. She was annoyed and rushing me even though there was absolutely no one inside when I was ordering and maybe one car in drive thru. Food was mediocre at best. Came here for a very late weekend lunch (~2PM) and there was no line whatsoever at Joella's. We just got a single sandwich to share since we weren't that hungry: Pimento Sammie, Ellas Fav w/ Parm Garlic Fries ($11.50) - The chicken was fried nicely, with a good crisp and a juicy interior. Ella's fav was more sweet than spicy, basically barely spicy - I would definitely get spicier next time. I found that there was way too much salt in the batter/breading. On certain portions of the breading, there was so much salt that I felt like it was burning my tongue. On top of the chicken, the pimento cheese was surprisingly good for the Midwest. Good slightly sweet pimiento flavor and fresh cheddar. The pickles added a good zing and it was all on a nice buttered bun Parm Garlic Fries Upgrade ($0.75) - These had a nice parmesan, garlic and oregano flavor. This was my first time trying Joelle's and we ordered through the drive thru. There was nobody at the drive thru and we got our order quickly. I ordered breaded tenders and mac and cheese. I had the chicken slider plate which comes with 2 sliders and choice of sliders. You also pick heat level of hot sauce. The tweener heat level was spicy hot without overpowering the taste of the chicken. The sliders were piping hot, chicken was juicy, breading crispy, served with a pickle on a dinner roll. The slider was good with a lot of flavor. The fries (my side) were also very hot and really crispy. They were the best fries I've had in a while. My meal was $9 with tax. The portions in the Kid's meals were impressive. There were plenty of fries, large chicken tenderloin and a milk box. All for only $4.99. The kids were happy. The service is friendly and quick. The dining room is clean and not many people at noon. Joella's is out of Louisville. The menu has a variety of Southern offerings such as greens and banana pudding. I'll be back. I always drive by Joella's and finally decided to stop today to see what it was all about. As I pull up to the drive through, I saw a sign that said it was temporarily closed. That is the only reason I am not giving it a full 5 stars. I wanted to be able to stay in my car as it was cold out, but ended up going inside. Inside of Joella's was clean, nicely decorated, and staff was extremely friendly. I had heard of people ranting about how good their fries are and obviously their chicken so I ended up getting a classic chicken sandwich with their crispy thin fries. My boyfriend ended up getting their slaw chicken sandwich with a side of mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. The fries are HEAVENLY. So crispy and salty. Absolute perfection. The chicken sandwich was juicy and the bun almost had a honey taste to it. Also delicious. The mashed potatoes were soft and creamy and the mac and cheese was simply phenomenal. I will definitely be going back to Joella's the next time I crave yummy fries and some good ole chicken. read more

I played Yelp Roulette for Castleton. They were some other options I wanted to try like burgers and BBQ, but I had that recently. #40 on the list was Joella's. As I looked at the menu, it claimed the winning spot for my supper. Joella's is a little different from your standard fast food chicken places. You get to choose your level of spice, more side options, and dipping sauces you do not get from other establishments. I went with the Jumbo tenders at the Ella's Fav level with red-skin mashed potatoes and green beans. For checking in to Yelp, I also got a big wing, which I almost had to argue about receiving. The tenders were big, juicy, and on the spicy side. The green beans were ok but the mashed potatoes was very creamy and delicious. The wing had good flavor but has the flaws of most wings, not enough meat and some maneuvering. One sauce comes with the meal and one sauce is just not good enough for this sauceaholic. So I chose 5 and paid an extra 50 cents for each one. A description of the sauces I tried are: Jojo (Mustard BBQ), Bama white (a lot of horseradish), cheerwine BBQ (Cheerwine is a chery flavored soda), pimento ranchero (ranch with pimento cheese), and my favorite - the spiked honey. I am having a hard time thinking of a sauce similar to it. Either way, that's the sauce I'm choosing next time then either the Jojo or Pimento Ranchero. For dessert, they have pie in a jar. I had the chocolate peanut butter one which was very fulfilling. I get to keep the jar too. Sweet tea was Indiana level sweet tea which means barely sweet. But it was fresh-brewed. I thought of Joella's as a better Southern Pop-eyes. If you love fried chicken with some heat, come give it a try. read more

I've ordered pickup from here a few times, and my experience has always met expectations. Today, I ordered the cod instead of my usual chicken, and it took some time for my order to get ready; I'm guessing because the cod probably had to be cooked separately from chicken orders. Anyway, no big deal; I'd much rather have to wait to ensure fresh food! But, the staff clearly felt badly about the wait, as they were very apologetic despite my not complaining. When I unpacked my meal ay my desk, I saw that the staff had included a complimentary banana pudding, which was a very pleasant surprise! I'm surprised how popular this place is. I stopped in here mainly because of the dine in it offered. I looked at their online menu prior to coming here and I was excited to try their vegan chicken. This was by far a great experience from the moment I ordered. This place is beautiful inside as it is outside. It's sad that this place was understaffed but I can't blame them for that. I ordered a combo menu and the part I was shocked by is that a drink was not included because I was excited to try some of their specialty drinks they sell. I've never had a bad meal here! The food arrived super quick. I barely scooted into my booth before the lady showed up with our meals! It was my friend's first time here and he really liked it! Decided to check out a chicken place we had never heard of, Joella's Hot Chicken, while in Indy earlier this month. The employee that took our order was quick and honestly one of the most cheerful food workers I've seen in a while. We told him we'd never been there and he told us about the most popular items. We both got jumbo chicken strips (mine with southern sauce and his with Ella's favorite sauce, both honey mustard dipping sauce). My hubby got 2 sides (mac&cheese and fries) while I just got mac&cheese. He handed us a number and we sat to wait for our take out. Honestly, it was some of the best chicken I can recall ever having from a restaurant. It was juicy and the honey mustard complimented perfectly. My husband didn't undersell the fantasticness of the mac & cheese. It is creamy and just as delicious reheated. I am so glad we made the stop here. I know I am requesting to coming back here when we are in the area again, especially since they have locations in only 5 states and Indy is the only place I know I'm coming back to. read more

I've had a Popeye's chicken sandwich, I've had a Chick-fil-a chicken sandwich, and now I've finally had a Joella's chicken sandwich. I've driven passed this place an infinite number of times, and finally decided to stop by and give it a try (after being highly recommended by one of my co-workers). The menu itself is relatively simple with lots of customizable options. I went with a chicken sandwich and added pimento cheese. For my side I went with mac and cheese. My girlfriend got the chicken tenders with a side of french fries. After ordering the chicken, they ask which spice level you want. There are 6 different levels ranging from no heat to inferno. We both went with "Ella's favorite" which is level 3 of 6. They also have several sauce options including Jojo sauce, cherrywine bbq, spiked honey, pimento ranchero, honey mustard, ranch and blue cheese. We went with ranch and Jojo sauce (the basis of which is a mix of bbq and honey mustard). We got our order to-go, but there were several families dining in. They had every other table blocked off for social distancing. Overall, I was very impressed with my chicken sandwich. The chicken was high quality and very tender. The pimento cheese on top added a really nice flavor. My girlfriend also enjoyed her chicken tenders, which were served on top of a slice of bread. Jojo's sauce complemented it well. However, we were both a little disappointed in the french fries, which were kind of bland and nothing to write home about. That said, the chicken is definitely worth coming back for. The chicken and waffles with spiked honey caught my attention, so I'm looking forward to giving that a try next time. read more

It's not the easiest location to get to, but worth it. Typically very speedy service and consistent. They offer dine in and take out. If you're getting a large order I would recommend calling in ahead for curbside service. Jumbo Tenders with One Side is great for a cheap and fast lunch. Two sides is not much more and worth it if you are more hungry. Ellas Fav and the Honey Mustard are fantastic. Great fries! read more

My first clue this meal wouldn't be good was the fact it was about 5:45 pm on a busy commuter street and there were zero people at the restaurant and my food was already sitting on the shelf but I was early to pickup. Then, I looked in my bag to find the $4 glass jar shortcake I bought was actually a $4 3-spoon-serving of shortcake in a plastic takeout container. When I got home, our chicken was so dry it was inedible. The breading was falling off, too. We redeemed a reward for a free side and got the fried pickles...They were not fried. They had barely a dusting of coating on them (not even enough to make them soggy but somehow...they were soggy) and they basically were just plain raw pickles. My son took one bite of his meal and asked "What's wrong with this chicken?" So...ultimately it's a snack dinner night. I'm really disappointed, Joella's used to be so good. read more

Joelle's Hot Chicken is a step above the rest when it comes to fast food. I decided to order some jumbo Chicken tenders for dinner tonight through Uber Eats. I was surprised to see a buy one get one free deal on Chicken tenders, so I immediately jumped on it. I ordered the kale Crunch salad as my side which is awesome!! The chicken tenders are definitely huge and tasted wonderful! I have been to the establishment on 96th St and it is just like any other fast food restaurant, except this was very clean and high quality. The staff were very professional and friendly, and they handled each order with grace and elegance. The restaurant was busy and is always busy every time I drive by the establishment. Joelle's puts out an excellent product from what I can see, and the spiked honey is incredible and fabulous!! This is a excellent fast food restaurant for dinner and Joelle's will always remain #1 on my list for Chicken tenders. They are irresistible and you cannot get enough of them! read more

This time around at Joellas I ordered the 3 piece tenders - hot with a side of Parmesan garlic fries and Mac n cheese. I was super disappointed with my experience. The tenders.. these almost felt reheated. They were super tough and slightly warm with a almost wet batter that wouldn't stay on the tender. Overall really dry piece of chicken. The fries.. almost seemed like normal fries. They were shoe string with a little amount of Parmesan on them (not worth the extra charge). Came out cold and underwhelming The Mac.. this might have been the worst part. When I went in for the first bite my fork took the whole portion out in one piece. Meaning the Mac n cheese was cold and almost felt reheated as well. I usually come here once every 4-6 months and am pleased with my experience. I love Joella's! This is one of the few local places that I am an ever repeating customer at. I like that it bridges the line between fast food and classier food as there is still a drive through! I recently ordered through DoorDash and it got here super quick and still warm. I ordered a variety pack of the chicken tenders. It came with tender with each of the sauces and spices, so six total, ranging from mild to burn your mouth hot. The Fire in Da Hole tender looked innocuous, so I took a bite and at first I thought it wasn't bad but then it BUILT in heat and soon I was running for a glass of milk. So if spice challenges are your thing, go for it! I think I will stick with the hot honey version myself from here on out! Having extensive travels through Columbus, OH & Nashville, TN (hot chicken staples), I was hoping for some good hot chicken but left disappointed and underwhelmed. Chicken portions: For the price point, I was surprised how small my chicken tenders were. For $1 more, I could get double the portion at other national hot chicken staples. Chicken: Skin had heat and flavorful but it didn't reach the core of the meat so if you got a bite of all meat and no skin, it was bland. Decor: Their booths offered a nice place to sit for groups of 4 but the table length didn't even reach the end of the booth... so my booty was on the seat but my food was to my side. I placed an online order at 4:50p on a Tuesday. The process was easy with no complications. I received an email confirmation stating the order would be ready at 4:56p. I arrived at 5:08p and walked inside to pick up my order. The place was empty, only one table being occupied and no one at the counter. I was greeted upon entering. I said I was there to pick up a take out order and gave my first name. She asked for my last name, looked at the only order sitting on the counter and handed it to me and told me to "Have a nice day". I ordered a Dixie Chicken Sammie with french fries and a Jumbo Tender with Mac n Cheese and honey mustard. Everything came as ordered with nothing missing. I ate the sandwich and fries and took the tenders home for lunch the next day. The Dixie sammie was a fried chicken sandwich with cole slaw and a pickle. This sandwich reminded me a lot of the chicken sandwich at The Eagle (for Indy locals). It was delicious! The breading, the seasoning, the cole slaw...YUM. The only thing I didn't care for was that it was made with two side by side pieces of chicken, so it was hard to keep the sandwich together. The french fries on the other hand were the worst fries I have ever tasted! They were cold, rubbery and had zero flavor. I could only eat a few before tossing the rest. They were disgusting. The next day I reheated the chicken tenders in a toaster oven and nuked the mac n cheese. Again, the chicken was delicious! It was still moist and flavorful the next day. The Mac n Cheese was just okay. I liked the seasonings and the cheesiness, but it tasted more like mashed potatoes. I felt like I was eating cheesy mashed potatoes. Nashville hot chicken that can give the original a run for its money. I love fried chicken, I also love Nashville Hot Chicken. I have eaten Nashville Hot Chicken in Nashville at some of the original joints that invented it. Joella's Nashville Chicken is a chip off the old block of the original recipe from the south. I am not from Indiana but, I will say that if I lived here I would eat at this joint at least 2 times a week. Hate to leave 3 stars, I love Joella's! Always pretty fast, staff is always super friendly and nice, and the food is always so great! My bf and I live close, and pickup from Joella's multiple times a month. But recently a few changes have been made and the last 3 times (including tonight being the reason for my review) have left me very disappointed. THE RANCH!! The recipe for the ranch changed and is thick and doesn't taste good. I always get and LOVE the kale crunch salad as my side, but again the last few times has tasted extremely acidic and just different. We are also so sad about the collard greens no longer being on the menu! Again we love Joella's, but these changes have left me looking for something else when we need to pickup some food. read more
