The trays were generously packed, and every bite was absolutely delicious. I cannot thank this restaurant enough for helping make our event such a success. Spotted Joe's Downtown Tacos while checking out Chesterton's cute downtown area. Colorful exterior called to our tired selves after a 5 hour drive. Walked into the sounds of tejano music, so cool! Two seating areas, we chose the bar side, with the festively decorated bar. Mini piñatas and greenery put us into a great mood, lifted our road weary spirits. Ordered two Coronas with lime, we just wanted something light and familiar. Chips and salsa on the house came out with our brews. Simple salsa, but hit the spot. Thick chips, my fav kind. Menus extensive but not Cheesecake Factory crazy. Ordered tacos, since that appears to be a specialty. Steak milanesa, chile relleno, and mashed potato tacos were too interesting not to try. Also ordered the queso, a warm creamy white dip that went nicely with the salsa. Faint bite, so if you like things hot, add one of the hot sauces, which are placed on every table. Super friendly staff all around, always a bonus. Also, place was very clean, all tables neat and wiped down, very nice. Looked around while waiting for our tacos and noticed some great murals on the walls. Also noticed the huge tequila collection behind the bar. Ordered our food in to go containers since we planned to take most back to our hotel. But we had to sample hot first! So all the tacos were good. Beans and rice were simple and authentic, excellent! The mashed potato came in a crispy fried shell, light and delicious. The milanesa was also yummy. But the star was the chile relleno taco! Nice bite and so good! Fun experience at Joe's. I give them a 2 stars for the meal. The delivery--eating in--is horrible. They have a couple of entitled young girls, who will not take your order if they don't understand you. They will ask the cooks to come to the table and talk to you. Then, I had to go to the register and ask for napkins and other basic needs like a fork, etc. I hope these "helpers" are just training and will get better. read more

This is my first time here, but has been a favorite of our daughter's since they opened. I really enjoyed my Big Shrimp Burrito and she had the two beef taco dinner. This is a great little spot right in the heart of Chesterton. Should definitely be on your list if you're in the area. When Joe's Downtown Tacos first opened, the food and service were stellar. Today's experience was not so good. I ordered Chiles Rellenños with no tomatoes. The plate arrived as pictured, full of tomatoes. I told the server and she stated. "I didn't make it." In addition, the lettuce was inedible. Enlarge the picture to see how wilted it was. Looks like what has happened here is they can't find experienced servers AND unfortunately don't train the ones they had. read more

My family loves this place! This is now my second favorite authentic Mexican restaurant in my area (the other is actually in Porter). Always great food at a great price, and they have never gotten my order wrong. They are also very fast service for take out, with most orders being ready in 15m no matter how busy they have been. I did eat in once, and it seemed to take a bit longer than usual, but that could also be due to what we ordered. If you're looking for great Mexican food, stop by! read more

This place is amazing! Fortunately, we live very close to the restaurant and walked there on date night. I had the chicken quesadilla and added shrimp with my chicken. Came here after a long morning of fishing upon seeing some good reviews. I was not disappointed in the slightest. I walked in to a very clean dining area and was greeted by a warm and welcoming staff. I ordered the chorizo and potato taco and the tacos Al pastor as well as a side of chips and guacamole. The tacos were amazing and the guacamole was super fresh and perfectly seasoned. Ordered three taco dinner tonight. Two chicken and one pork. In the past the tacos were great and the meat was juicy and the flour tortillas were warm. Unfortunately tonight was not great. There was very little taste to the tacos. The meat was dry, the carnitas was hard and had very little taste. When I pick up a taco to eat it I like a little juice to spill out and the taco shell to be soft with the cheese melted. None of that happened tonight. Not sure if under new management. read more

I am updating my review. I went to place an order today (7-29-2021) and found out that Joe's downtown tacos was sold and is under new ownership. Oh great. That explains why on my last visit about a week or two ago there was several unfamiliar faces and the four chicken tacos I ordered was served with wet unflavored shredded chicken, instead of the usual grilled cubed chicken. I called today to place an order for four chicken tacos and asked about the shredded chicken that was on my tacos on my previous order and they said grilled chicken is no longer available. So with that said as long as the new owners continue to serve shredded chicken instead of grilled cubed chicken they will not get my money for anything served with shredded chicken on it. I might be back for a steak taco or steak burrito but definitely not chicken that is shredded. Note to Joe's management, you need to bring the grilled chicken back! read more
