My husband and I went to the Chesterton location and we both got an awful case of salmonella poisoning. It was so bad we were not able to keep any fluids down for 4 days. We then were talking to other people about our experience and another couple we know went there the following day and also got salmonella poisoning! We all had some sort of chicken in our dishes so obviously they need to do a better job at making sure their food quality is safe for customers. read more

I used to come here all the time; was my favorite place in Chesterton. Now it's terrible low grade food that, based on the chewiness was way over microwaved. Maybe multiple times, maybe it was last nights food? I don't know but never again. read more

Very unfortunate this was one of our favorite restaurants. Sometime in July my husband and I got horrible food poisoning. It could've been salmonella poisoning but we could not keep any fluids down. Our family ate here recently. It was their first time at an El Salto. There is a location in Portage near my office and I'll admit I wasn't a fan after a couple of lunches there. This Chesterton location was a better experience. It is a bigger location and much more traditional inside. The food was good, but admittedly still just your average Mexican joint. Nothing great, but nothing horrible at this one. With several other options in the area, this won't ever be my first choice, but I would visit again in Chesterton. read more

My wife said the margarita she had was good. I had the two shredded beef taco combination with rice and beans. My wife had nachos with cheese and beef. The food was...well...I would have rather gone to Taco Bell. The shredded beef was like a sloppy joe mix texture, soggy and bland. The rice, although not terribly dry, was orange and flavorless. The refried beans were an unnatural rust-colored bean purée and again very bland. The portion size was acceptable but the taste was disappointing to say the least. The nachos were microwaved guaranteed. The cheese appeared to be string cheese and melted on the chips in the microwave. The beef was browned...but not seasoned beyond the browning process, which again was terribly disappointing. The service, however personable and polite, was slow and forgetful. It was a pleasant evening so the majority of folks were outside in the patio area, which was spaced well enough to have a good conversation with your table whilst not feeling like you were talking over the neighboring tables. We won't go here again. Taco Bell is on the other side of the 49, cheaper and a better representation of Mexican food. read more

Alcoholic drinks are ok, although not much booze in them. They've got a nice little patio, but the food is just awful. Small portions for the money, and twice now my food has been presented to me less than warm - almost cold. Oh my gosh. El Salto is hands down my favorite Mexican resraraunt in the region. I'm so lucky to have this & the Valparaiso location so close to me. Anything on the menu is fabulous. Heed my warning, unless you want to take the meal you ordered home in a bag.... go ahead and order the white queso for your chips. It is amazing on ANYTHING, AND IT IS SIMPLY TO DIE FOR! Pros: excellent patio that was pleasant to sit on and plenty of parking. Cons: well, everything else, really. The service was slow, the food was bland and on the low end of run-of-the-mill as far as Mexican food goes. The queso dip was OK though. What really ticked me off? I ordered a strawberry daiquiri. My sister ordered a virgin (non-alcoholic) strawberry daiquiri. We could not tell the difference. We each went back and forth tasting each others (because initially we thought he made a mistake and gave me the virgin). We were a party of five for lunch on June 17, 2017 around 1:30pm. My husband became deathly ill at 3am on the 18th with food poisoning. Arriving at 7am on the 18th, we spent three hours in the ER. His son, visiting us from another country and we were celebrating his last day here, texted us from the plane that around 11pm on the 17th after he had boarded, he also became very ill with food poisoning. The only common denominator at El Salto's was they both drank tall tap beers in mugs. I called and told the manager Francisco, and he said he would have the owner call me tonight. I will update this if and when he does! 6/19/17 UPDATE: The owner never called me back on 6/18/17, like I was told by Francisco. So I called the Porter County Health Department, they can deal with it. read more

My experience at El Salto was mixed. I arrived there on a weeknight to have dinner with my dad. We were sat right away but a server did not come to our table right away. In fact it was about 10 minutes before they acknowledged we were there. This was frustrating especially for a weeknight when they weren't as busy. In terms of food, my dad and I split the fajitas for 2. There was plenty of food for both of us and we even had leftovers. I would say this was a good value for what we paid. It wasn't the best Mexican food I've had but it was the worst. Expect standard Mexican fare when you walk in. You do need to be careful to not let the food burn though. They bring it out with the burner still on and the meat continues to cook at your table. read more

Had a hankering for a margarita so we stopped here for dinner as we were headed to Michigan. Overall it's not bad. I love that they have all types of margaritas and they come in 4 sizes. But when it comes to a real Margarita all ya need is a simple on the rocks Patron with salted rim. Mmm, they were good. I opted fro small and my husband got medium...boy was that medium big! He didn't even finish it. Small is 8 bucks, medium 9.50. For dinner my boys got the cheese quesadillas, I ordered fish tacos and my husband had a trivets of a chixken, shrimp and beef soft tacos. my fish (Mahi mahi) were just right. Light and not heavy at all. I tried one of my husband's tacos and boy it tasted like it was dunked in salt!!! Not tasty at all. He likes that, I suppose. I went to El Salto for lunch with a friend and was not impressed. I ordered the torta ahogada and it was okay. The torta was filled with carnitas, grilled onions, and guacamole and was covered in an overly salty, bland, cold salsa. I had a couple of problems with this: First, the guacamole added a soggy texture to the inside of the sandwich, which was not pleasant. A torta ahogada should be soft on the outside from soaking in the sauce and firm on the inside since it is filled with meat; this was a soggy mess. Secondly, the sauce that covered the torta was cold. A hot sandwich + cold, salty sauce = no thank you. The salsa that was served with the chips tasted like it was from a jar. The service was good and our server was very nice, but I was not impressed with the food. read more

Our dinner came almost immediately (3pm on a Tuesday) when I saw the cheese on the top of my enchiladas not melted, I should have known... My Enchiladas "Yolanda" dinner with Rice & Beans was only luke warm. Granted, it was a Tuesday night, 6 pm, and we beat the crowd. I like seafood, so I tried the shrimp quesadilla. I subbed bell peppers with poblano and WOWZA, so delish. Ingredients were all grilled and so good! Flour tortilla was toasted before being sauced with their yummy cheese sauce, extra yum! Shrimp was not overcooked... Randy was our waitress, and very attentive. Cuervo margaritas in the rocks with salt were pleasant. Mixer was mediocre, tequila pour was above adequate. Husband had steak dish with onion and bacon... Steak cooked perfectly medium, but bacon overwhelmed the dish. Will surely go back. 200% better than local equivalent Hacienda (overrated!) and vying heavily with prior fave El Bracero in Michigan City. read more

I have never been to this location, but we came for my husband's birthday. He ordered off-menu and got arroz con pollo and it was amazing! I ordered flautas and they were so greasy it made my stomach hurt later! The waiter took so long to check on us that when he finally did arrive we had a list for him! They charge you for tostada chips (which is ridiculous all in itself), and they're quick to serve you, and get you out the door.
