If you're visiting on the weekend, I'd also recommend arriving early since parking can fill up quickly. The food was good overall, but I did feel it was a bit overpriced for the portion sizes and the overall menu. One thing I really appreciated was the complimentary welcome drink. It was our first time dining here so it would have been nice to be greeted warmly. One host was friendly and the other one was stale and gave me a cold response. From the appetizers to the entrees, everything was underwhelming--and much of it arrived lukewarm, which gave the impression that it had been sitting around rather than coming fresh from the kitchen. The steaks were probably the biggest miss. I ordered medium-well, expecting at least a little pink, but what arrived was completely cooked through and tough. Another person in our party ordered a medium steak, and it was tough as well. At that point, I'm thinking the issue may not have been the requested temperature...the kitchen just may not know how to cook a steak. The cocktails didn't exactly redeem the evening either. They were lacking in flavor and, honestly, the alcohol pour was so light I almost wondered if the bartender was working with a ration card. What makes it even more disappointing is the price. When you're spending that kind of money for a birthday dinner, you expect the food and drinks to match the atmosphere and the bill. Unfortunately, this experience left us seriously underwhelmed. We were her last table, stayed later than we probably should have, and not once did she make us feel rushed. Quite the opposite. She handled the entire evening with grace. Brendan, the floor manager, also went out of his way to make sure my car was safely situated when valet wasn't operating. Small detail, big impression. The food was excellent, the wine pairing was sensational, and the overall energy of the room was unusually good. By the end of the night, conversations had turned into friendships that will absolutely outlive the dinner. We made reservations for 12 at 8:30. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we were able to seat 17 at 9:15 - 6 older people at the regular tables and the remaining 11 at high tops. They put Cheddar cheese, you know, real cheese on their burgers and not that awful American cheese also known as cheese food. That alone makes me return more than once. We love their burgers and they will even cook them the way you want and not burn them because they think they have to. They are the best. It has double patties, cheddar cheese, pickles, lettuce, roasted onion aioli--what more could you want. I know, fries that are great. It comes with them or for a tad more you can get a side salad or truffle parmesan fries. It matters not, they are all great. Their steaks are so great. The Joey Classic is a sirloin cooked to perfection with mashed potatoes. You can also get the Prime NY Strip and it is more money (a lot more) but so worth it. Everything there is great. It is open late. I love that. It is open until midnight, but don't show up at midnight, the kitchen is closing. The service is great. The place is just beautiful. Service is excellent. However the food is average at best .... I usually order the steak + sushi - filet upgrade and seared salmon option Nearly $100 for this dish and the steak comes out lukewarm and sushi tastes like you can make it at home. It's rice with seared salmon and mayo on top nothing crazy or special. Truffle fries didn't taste much like truffle and also came out lukewarm. Butter cake was very dense/doughy and heavy, I could only eat one bite. We also ordered the Mini Short Rib French Dips as well, comes in 2 or 4 pieces. We ordered 4 They have different size meat on every piece. One was a scrap , literally less than half of the others. Imagine we ordered 2 piece and got the tiny pieces, I wouldn't have even known any better. If you're not going to be consistent with the food/portions don't put the irregularities on the same plate as the others!! Just lazy and rookie mistakes you would not expect at a high end establishment. Looks like they don't even care at all to throw in that tiny gimpy piece. Also one of the pieces were barely thrown on the plate leaning off the plate. I fixed it for the first photo, but in my 2nd photo it shows how it came to our table. It is always a fun experience at Joey's. The staff were super accommodating, they were attentive and very kind. I just love how you're greeted with a glass of bubbles as you wait to get seated. The menu is pretty diverse, and it's hard to choose between what to order. For some reason, my ribeye was overly peppered, every bite was very difficult because of the amount of peppers used, I thought I was eating a Cacio E Pepe at that point. Except what was I going to do? Send the steak back? That's a little bit wasteful, so of course we have to eat it. The staff brought out the wrong drinks, a couple of times, which I said, I'll just take it thinking it's not gonna be wasteful, but they ended up charging us for it? God forbids me from being wasteful... but ok. The ambience of the restaurant is chill, it can get really busy, so a reservation is recommended. read more

Joey Manhattan Beach is a nice spot that clearly gets a lot of business, especially with the many offices and companies nearby. The restaurant was busy for diner but they gave us free champagne! Prices are on the higher side, which is expected for MB, but the food quality was solid. We ordered the Katsu Chicken Salad, which was the highlight. The katsu was nicely breaded and crispy, the salad was really tasty, and the portion was filling with a good amount of food. I also tried the seared salmon sushi. The salmon tasted fresh and well prepared, but the portion was pretty light and honestly not very filling compared to the katsu dish. The mall itself is nicely remodeled and has plenty of other food options nearby if the wait at Joey is long. It is also very close to Handel's Ice Cream, which makes it easy to grab dessert afterward. I parked in the south parking structure which is right next to Joey. The parking is convenient but it can get crowded unless you get lucky with timing. Overall the area feels very safe and pleasant to walk around. It makes for a nice little date spot, though it is definitely priced according to the location. I would return again. read more

We went to JOEY on Friday night for a date and sat in the bar area. Unfortunately, our server was incredibly rude, condescending, and dismissive throughout the entire experience. We didn't get her name, but she had long black wavy hair and large brown eyes. I'm including that only so management can identify who was serving our section that evening. It took approximately 10 minutes for her to greet us. There was no introduction or explanation of the menu; she simply asked if she could start us with drinks. We were still deciding, so we ordered waters. When she returned, we were ready to order cocktails, but she dropped the waters and immediately walked away. My date had to flag her down for straws. She returned, threw the straws onto our table, and walked away again without asking if we were ready to order. About 15 minutes later, she finally returned. I ordered an espresso martini, and my date asked if she could recommend a wine on the sweeter side. She looked at us as though the question was ridiculous and responded in an extremely condescending tone, "We don't have sweet wines." She explained that their wines range from crisp/buttery to dry. Fine--maybe JOEY doesn't carry traditionally sweet wine. That wasn't the problem. The problem was how she spoke to us as though we were stupid for asking. My date then asked which of two rosés would be sweeter in comparison to each other. She dismissively responded, "Well, I haven't tried them, so..." and again reiterated that their wines weren't sweet. Not knowing is completely okay. She could have said she hadn't tried them but would ask someone, recommend an alternative, or offer a sample if available. Instead, nearly every question was met with attitude. The same thing happened when we ordered food. My date asked whether any sushi options were cooked because he remembered previously having a tempura-style roll at JOEY. She responded, "We don't have cooked sushi. That's not a thing." He pointed to the seared salmon roll and asked whether "seared" meant it was at least partially cooked. She responded along the lines of, "Yeah, I guess. It's a light sear, I guess." He then mentioned having been to restaurants where certain sushi is torched tableside and simply asked whether JOEY did anything similar. Instead of saying, "No, ours is prepared in the kitchen," she responded condescendingly, "No. The chefs do not come out to the table to sear the sushi. The chefs don't do that. Why would the chefs do that?" That interaction perfectly summarizes the problem. It wasn't that the answer was no. It was the unnecessary attitude attached to every answer. My date then asked whether they had eel sauce. She responded, "Eel sauce? No, we don't have that." When he asked if they had a mayo-based sauce instead, she replied, "Like aioli? Do you want an aioli? I can charge you for an aioli." Again, a completely normal question was met with a dismissive tone. Our food was delivered by a food runner, and our server never once returned to check on us. She never asked how the food tasted, whether we needed anything else, or if we wanted another round of drinks. Around 10:50 p.m., she finally came over and essentially said, "I'm going to close you guys out, or I can transfer you to another server." There was no, "My shift is ending, is there anything else I can get you?" After barely checking on us all evening, the interaction was incredibly abrupt. I want to be clear: my complaint is not simply that service was slow. It was Friday night, and I understand restaurants get busy. My issue was her attitude. She repeatedly spoke to us in a dismissive and condescending manner while we asked completely normal questions about the menu. A server doesn't have to know every answer. Saying, "I'm not sure, but let me find out," is perfectly acceptable. There was absolutely no reason to make guests feel stupid or annoying for asking questions. My date remained polite throughout every interaction despite her attitude, which made her behavior stand out even more. We otherwise enjoyed our evening, but her service made us feel extremely unwelcome and put such a negative cloud over the experience that I have no desire to return to JOEY. read more

One was Duke's and the other was a Michters Rye. I tried each of them and both were made superbly by the Joey's Bartending staff. My curiosity learned that Duke's Rye is from Duke's Spirits and one of the founders is Ethan Wayne (John Wayne's youngest son). As many of us know; the legendary actor John Wayne was known as "The Duke". Learning and sharing this information with the staff (Kirk, Brandon Lee (psuedo..LOL) and manager John Stokke made it such a fun and entertaining afternoon at Joey's.
