Tiki-themed divey bar. Casual place, no pretense. Loved the exterior purple lighting. Had a taste if their cocktails which were good. Check it out if you're in the area!

So glad I found this place! I was looking for somewhere to hang out and grab a drink before heading to Cinema West, and Yelp pointed me to Purple Orchid. This spot checked all my Tiki-bar boxes: moody lighting, fun kitschy décor, and seriously great drinks. I started with a Mai Tai--perfectly strong but still super tasty--then switched to a glass of Chardonnay so I wouldn't be completely blitzed for the movie. We still had time to spare, so I finished with a virgin Piña Colada and oh my gosh, it was delicious. Loved the jukebox and pool tables, too. Huge thanks to Lindsay for the excellent service. We'll definitely be back!

Great place for cocktails in El Segundo. A lot of classic tiki drinks plus some twist. The purple passion and Vic's grog was my favorite. The atmosphere is a tiki bar with island vibes and music. The staff was super nice and very informative of recommendation of the drinks. There's also two billiard tables for entertainment besides the sports TVs.

    Delicious drinks!

If I could leave a review higher than 5 stars, I would!! The amazing Lindsay helped us host the tiki party of my DREAMS! Everyone raved about the drinks, atmosphere, and incredible service from Lindsay. The coolest place in El Segundo with the best energy, and best drinks! Recommending to everyone I know and can't wait to go back! Thanks for treating us like VIPs!

Not what I would consider tiki...

Wish I could leave zero stars.. This was the absolute worst Mai tai I have ever had. It tasted like sour/rotten juice with some sort of fermented swill floated on top. No mint on top, zero lime flavor, but a cherry on an umbrella. I literally took one sip and pushed the glass back to the edge of the bar. Not one bartender or bar back came to check on my party after sitting our drinks down. After about twenty minutes of being ignored someone came and grabbed my husbands empty glass but left my completely full glass sitting on the bar mat. Another ten minutes or so of still not being checked on and we finally decided to leave. I'm out the twelve bucks for my drink but I consider it a twelve dollar lesson in not coming back here again. Sadly, the only reason we chose to get drinks at this bar was because I insisted I wanted a drink before heading home.

Perhaps I'm spoiled from regularly traveling to places with great tiki bars, particularly San Diego, other parts of LA, and even Orlando. However, I also put great effort into making legit tiki drinks at home, so I both appreciate the effort when it's there, and will criticize when it isn't there. I'm not opposed to paying for proper tiki, but I also understand it's a difficult business model; doesn't mean you can't have the fake tiki for the cost conscious consumer, and good ones at a different price point. If you're used to high end tiki drinks, that are faithful to the originals, this is not that. Purple Orchid seems to be a dive bar that serves drinks that loosely resemble tiki drinks, and share the name. It has random tiki decorations, and bamboo, along with a stage (plus tv tuned to ESPN....), pool tables, etc. So, my experience was a sticky counter, served a drink in a sticky glass, bartenders exchanging stories about guests who got belligerent and required eviction, and certainly nothing resembling tiki escapism. If you want legit tiki, just take the longer ride share and hit up Bamboo Club or Tiki Ti. I gave two starts because the staff were nice, prices include tax so your bill is easy to calculate and a nice round number, and the cool tiki memorabilia on the mens bathroom wall. Learned there used to be a tiki theme motel in my home town a few decades ago.

The Purple Orchid is a beautiful neighborhood, tiki bar with pool tables. The custom wood bar is very long and decorated with Hawaiian memorabilia. The bartender was very friendly and outgoing. We came during happy hour and my Mai Tai was only $10.

If you are looking for a Genuine Tiki Bar with a totally sassified Bartender and the best Mai Tai that I've ever had, you got to check this place out. We love the vibe, the music & the staff. The interior never left the early 60's and I hope that it never does. It's a great reminder to times gone by, and what goes around comes around! Go, enjoy and travel back to what truly were the good ole days.

Great lunch spot with a floral ambiance and excellent food. It has a mom and pop feel so that's a perk. We came after the lunch rush, so the service was pretty quick.

We all ordered a different drink, but got two of the same. It was not worth the visit. Bill came to 48, way over priced.

Poor experience, wrong drinks, long wait time, we were overlooked while bartender was friendly with other people. Very strange, disappointing experience. Overpriced for what we received.

It's literally walking distance from our hotel in Torrance -- so close we actually walked past it the first time without even realizing it was there. Super hidden, easy to miss. The space itself is small, and when you first walk in it doesn't hit you with an over-the-top tiki vibe right away. But once the drinks start coming out, it fully delivers. The glassware is so fun and themed -- I was obsessed with the flamingo cup and actually ended up buying a couple online since I couldn't take the real one home with me. Drink-wise, I stuck mostly to my usual zombie, which has this great earthy, cinnamon-y flavor that's just different from anything else -- does the trick every time (there's a two-drink max/minimum on it, which I respect). We also tried a Makahiki Mua and a Painkiller, both really solid. The Makahiki Mua had a fun flavor, kind of similar to a Painkiller, but the zombie is still my go-to. Service was pretty good overall -- the bartender stayed mostly in one corner of the bar, which actually worked in our favor since we got served fast. A couple of small quirks though: they only have a limited number of menus, so we kept having to pass one back and forth around the bar, which felt a little silly. They also seemed to be running low on drink cups at times, having to wash and rotate them back into use, which was an odd thing to notice at a bar this size. Also wish they had some food or snacks available, even something small -- but that's a minor gripe. Vibe-wise, this is easily one of my favorite tiki lounges I've been to -- doesn't quite topple Broken Compass Tiki for me, but it's up there. Fun, easy, great drinks, solid service despite the small hiccups, and a perfect spot if you're staying in the Torrance area. Would absolutely go back and would recommend it to anyone chasing that tiki lounge crawl.

Very fun themed glassware. Presentations were beautiful and well thought out. Our server did a great job at recommending drinks that built on top of the previous one. Food- the weakest part of the experience. While certainly not bad however when compared to the rest of the experience it just was a bit lacking. The Loco Moco looked very nice. No one was at the station in back and after waiting in the heat for five minute, we wander through the patio, still spacious and actually more done up than my last time here a couple years ago when me and a group sat across from a tv celeb and his friends, ironically all coming from the same event. Lots of tables and chairs and cool fireplaces and pits for when the cooler nights and days return. Inside the temp was perfect and not as busy as we'd assume. We got greeted and guided to the open "U" shaped couch area with a small candlelit round table. Good music was vibing away and I ordered us the Mojave Punch. Still a big fan of their Tiki Punch Bowl, Pain Killer, TBD, Dark and Stormy, Blue Hawaiian, Mai Tai, Nutty Chi Chi and several seasonal drinks. Draft beer, cans and bottles also available with a solid assortment imported, including alcohol free, plus tons of craft brew. Getting a drink was easy when we first started, but became a challenge at the end, not to mention closing out. During our afternoon cocktail we has some chips and salsa from the stand in back semi partnered up with Tonga Hut. They have a variety Mexican street food style dishes including tacos, burritos, and more. Outside food is welcome - in fact a medium size party enjoyed a pizza party on the patio. When it's mellow seating is pretty easy. They tend to have one to two bartenders at a time rarely more as it's a tight space behind the bar. I have seen up to three in the past, but even then good drinks take time. Patience is very much still a key. They can do classic well drinks, soft drinks and have a water station as well. Restrooms are single use. Juke Box is solid though it did cut out at the end when me and this poor guy in front of me waited for what felt like an endless amount of time to close out. He had already been up there for 10 minutes during the shift changes, mini breaks (for staff) and one bartender handling everything for a while. After 15 minutes for myself and almost 25 for him we were able to depart. Highly recommend ordering early on and maybe something big or shareable. As the oldest tiki bar in Los Angeles, serving it up since 1958 it's hard to keep up all the goodness without any waves. They do their best and everyone is personable. Walk Ins are very welcome but they also take reservation for parties up to 15, beyond that reach out via email on their website. Also visit their other location in Palm Springs. Parking in the lot or on the street. Open from 4pm to 1am during the week, Monday through Thursday. Fridays and Saturday until 2am. Earlier hours Saturday and Sunday, open by 2pm.

Would be awesome if it was still 5-8pm like it seems it used to be. Overall a fun time and we'll likely be back!

We recently visited Secret Island Tiki which has been on our list for a while. It is located on the…read morecorner of Broadway and Pine under Shannon's. We parked in the multi-story parking garage behind Hamburger Mary's. Secret Island is a little over a block away. You can make reservations on OpenTable. It has a bit of a speakeasy entrance, as it is not plainly marked. Look for the staircase going down with greenery around it and the Secret Island sign downstairs. Go right at the bottom of the stairs and there is a little walkway where you see a very cool tiki display. It you stay there long enough, the lights will flash and you will hear thunder. Walk a little further and go through the door to enter. I was blown away by the atmosphere and build. Kudos to Bamboo Ben! It is dimly lit with a ton of cave wall, bamboo, thatch, netting, tiki lights, floats, skulls, tikis, and other décor. The bar is loaded with bottles and looks great with dark blue and green backlighting. The bar top is wood with deep cutouts that are filled with clear epoxy. The booths in the main dining area are little tiki huts and even have clouds overhead. There was great tiki music playing the whole time. A few times an hour a thunderstorm hits. The lights dim, lightning flashes with thunder sound effects, and red lights illuminate cracks in the floor that looks like lava veins. There is also a photo-op "Pele's Throne" which is a big lava rock surrounded chair. We sat at the bar and had the coconut shrimp appetizer ($12). The shrimp were breaded and cooked well, and had a coconut sprinkle on top. The spicy dipping sauce complemented the shrimp well. I started out with the Drunken Monkey (Makers Mark 46, Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, cinnamon, allspice, Angostura bitters, normally $19, $17 during happy hour). It was somewhat bourbon forward with a little funk from the Jamaican rum. I definitely got the cinnamon notes with a little banana and allspice in the background. She started out with the El Capitan Hook (Del Maguey mezcal, pineapple, banana liqueur, Luxardo cherry liqueur, lime, $17, $15 during happy hour). This was smoke forward with light pineapple and banana flavor. I had the Hula burger ($18) which was very good with a lot of different flavors from the various toppings. It came with a decent amount of fries, and was a filling plate. She had the pineapple bowl fried rice and added with BBQ pork ($17 + $5 for pork add-on). It is served in half of a scooped out pineapple and had a good amount of rice with pork and green onions on top. It had a good mix of teriyaki sauce on the rice and BBQ sauce on the pork. Next, I had the Rum Runner (coconut and blended dark rums, banana liqueur, raspberry, grenadine, pineapple, orange, lime, $18, $15 during happy hour). It was very pineapple and coconut forward which overpowered all of the other ingredients. She also had the Let That ManGo (white rhum agricole, coconut, mango, lemon, $18, $16 during happy hour). The primary flavors here were mango with some grassiness from the agricole. We were here from about 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead with only a few other people in the place the whole time. They do have a stage in the back with live music acts, so it is probably busier when there is entertainment and on weekends. Our first bartender was Alex who was nice but we barely talked with him. Manager Pedro took over the bartender duties later on and we had a great time chatting with him. Service was great from both of them. The drinks are a few dollars above average, but if you come during happy hour, the drinks are several dollars off. Happy hour is currently all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and Thursday through Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. The food was good, the drinks were ok to good, and the atmosphere was great. Normally, this would probably be a one and done, but I really liked the build and would like to come back when it is busier, maybe on a weekend.
