This was my first time visiting Purple Orchid, and I wanted to try a tiki bar close to home. Overall, I had a really fun time! The vibe is very classic, no-fuss tiki bar, and they have two pool tables inside, which adds to the laid-back feel. The drinks were great, and everyone there was really nice, which made the experience even better. The only thing I'd say could use some improvement is the music. Omg, I was definitely wishing the playlist had a little more energy or personality. Better music would take the vibe up a notch for sure. Wish I could leave zero stars.. This was the absolute worst Mai tai I have ever had. It tasted like sour/rotten juice with some sort of fermented swill floated on top. No mint on top, zero lime flavor, but a cherry on an umbrella. I literally took one sip and pushed the glass back to the edge of the bar. Not one bartender or bar back came to check on my party after sitting our drinks down. After about twenty minutes of being ignored someone came and grabbed my husbands empty glass but left my completely full glass sitting on the bar mat. Another ten minutes or so of still not being checked on and we finally decided to leave. I'm out the twelve bucks for my drink but I consider it a twelve dollar lesson in not coming back here again. I went here after karaoke with some friends on a Wednesday night. Our group loves a tiki bar. This felt like a great neighborhood spot. It was busy but not full. There were two pool tables actively being used. The bartender was friendly and helpful. We considered sharing a cocktail bowl but we all wanted different tropical profiles. So glad I found this place! I was looking for somewhere to hang out and grab a drink before heading to Cinema West, and Yelp pointed me to Purple Orchid. This spot checked all my Tiki-bar boxes: moody lighting, fun kitschy décor, and seriously great drinks. I started with a Mai Tai--perfectly strong but still super tasty--then switched to a glass of Chardonnay so I wouldn't be completely blitzed for the movie. We still had time to spare, so I finished with a virgin Piña Colada and oh my gosh, it was delicious. Loved the jukebox and pool tables, too. Huge thanks to Lindsay for the excellent service. Great place for cocktails in El Segundo. A lot of classic tiki drinks plus some twist. The purple passion and Vic's grog was my favorite. The atmosphere is a tiki bar with island vibes and music. Service was decent but the cocktails were not great if you're seeking a tiki drink. If you want something else, maybe it's better. We love tiki cocktails and this was not the place. We got a typical Navy Grog and it was not edible. My husband took a sip and was done. I had a specialty tiki cocktail that was fine and nothing to write home about but did finish it for the principle of it. I told him I wanted to send the Navy Grog back but he told me not to. This didn't feel like the place to send drinks back so he left his very full drink there and closed out. Especially for $16? Perhaps I'm spoiled from regularly traveling to places with great tiki bars, particularly San Diego, other parts of LA, and even Orlando. However, I also put great effort into making legit tiki drinks at home, so I both appreciate the effort when it's there, and will criticize when it isn't there. I'm not opposed to paying for proper tiki, but I also understand it's a difficult business model; doesn't mean you can't have the fake tiki for the cost conscious consumer, and good ones at a different price point. If you're used to high end tiki drinks, that are faithful to the originals, this is not that. Purple Orchid seems to be a dive bar that serves drinks that loosely resemble tiki drinks, and share the name. It has random tiki decorations, and bamboo, along with a stage (plus tv tuned to ESPN....), pool tables, etc. So, my experience was a sticky counter, served a drink in a sticky glass, bartenders exchanging stories about guests who got belligerent and required eviction, and certainly nothing resembling tiki escapism. If you want legit tiki, just take the longer ride share and hit up Bamboo Club or Tiki Ti. I gave two starts because the staff were nice, prices include tax so your bill is easy to calculate and a nice round number, and the cool tiki memorabilia on the mens bathroom wall. Learned there used to be a tiki theme motel in my home town a few decades ago. read more

What a find! Went there on a double date. My friend suggested stopping in for a drink before seeing Bride of Frankenstein at the nearby Old Town Music Hall for our Halloween themed outing. It was a great idea. I must say that Purple Orchid is the tiki-est bar I've ever been to. Yes, it was divey but it had a cool decor, interesting mood lighting, and I liked my Mai Tai. It was fun seeing the other couple sharing their giant volcano bowl drink with the flame in the center. Luckily, no eyebrows were singed in the process! This review is for last Saturday, it was extremely busy and both bartenders were moving very fast. The one who took care of me was wearing glasses and had tattoos, I didn't get her name. She made me her favorite drink off the menu, which I really liked! I think it was a rum and pineapple grog thingy and then for my second I had originally wanted a pina colada but she recommended something called a painkiller that was AMAZING and it's my new favorite! Purple Orchid advertises itself as a tiki bar and there were certainly opportunities for some island fever-esque drinks to be had. My friend and I went ahead and ordered their Scorpion Bowl ($30) which you'd think we be done with as grown adults in our 30s. But of course, Bruins go hard so we had to enjoy one during happy hour times. Our drink was stiff, had the tiki umbrellas to boot, and was fun all around. The one drink that didn't really meet our expectations was the Singapore Sling. It wasn't red nor had much sweetness, so they either forgot the grenadine for ours or they chose to not use it for their version. If you're looking for a divey, semi-tiki themed bar with strong cocktails in the town of El Segundo, this is your place! I tried the Vic's Grog ($14) because it was noted as winning best cocktail in the Tiki Oasis contest. It was described as having fruitier notes of passion fruit and pineapple, but all I could really taste was rum hahaha. Came here with four friends after a Clipper game. All of us are Asian. It was a friend's birthday. All I did was ask the bartender if I could charge my phone and she said not on this wall but over there next to the stage. To get to the plug, I stood on the edge of the small stage (easiest way to get to the plug) and the bartender FLIPPED OUT on me and started yelling and said my entire group needed to leave and she got the bouncer to kick us all out. We ordered $100 in drinks. We kept asking what did we do??? AND THEN THE REGULARS AT THE BAR (white) STARTED YELLING AT US TO GET OUT! They just kept yelling at us to "GET OUT!!!" AND THEN THE BARTENDER CALLED THE COPS ON US. WTF. We left before the cops came. We saw the cops pull up as we left. The craziest thing about this was for 30 min. I was talking to the bartender and the people at the bar and was nice to them and they were being nice back. I still don't understand why the bartender flipped out on me and us like that. Guy we 4 girls were with asked female bartender if he can charge his dead phone. She told him where. He went to go do it. But he couldn't get to it due to tight space. He went past this rope to do it then that bartender yelled @ him telling him not to go over the rope it's there for a reason we r supposed to follow the rules. Honestly it just looked like decor & we didn't know. He asked her y her tone was rude when he was tipping her well & they were having good conversations throughout the night. She immediately asked the security to kick us all out. His girl asked y she suddenly caught attitude & trying to kick us out we didn't do anything wrong. Security told us to all leave. We all got up to ask y do we have to leave & does he even know the situation. I told him we will leave but can i explain to manager what happened cause it's a lil unfair. Everybody @ bar ganged up on us & started yelling & cursing for us to leave. We were yelling too by then. They even asked if we understand english. We were mixed ethnicities group. The bartender called police. As we were leaving the security & 1 customer who's been cursing @ us for no reason got in to a scuffle who was asked to leave but nobody else who was cursing & screaming were asked to leave. This is y i say racist. & i overheard bartender tell security to get license plate cause our guy is driving drunk. He never drank cause he was our dd. This probably wouldn't have happened if we weren't a mix ethnicity group & bartender didn't overreact. What a horrid bday experience. Bartender knew it was my bday too. im writing this review because the customer service was horrible. my friends and i were waiting to get drinks at the bar, waited about a whole 10 minutes just for someone to notice us. it felt like we were being ignored. actually TWO bartenders said "we will be right with you" but never came. it was a saturday night but NOT a busy one for them. finally we were able to get a women bartenders attention, the one with back hair, glasses and gauges in her ears (also with attitude), took our order. we ordered like normal. she took super long making the drinks, talking with other customers and getting distracted, which is whatever but we already waited long enough for the drinks. anyways once it was time to pay, we did but it got to the tipping section and we decided we were NOT going to tip because like i said service wasn't good. this women bartender decides to announce to the whole bar "JUST SO YOU KNOW HE DOESNT TIP" and kept going..... like girl we tip if we think service was good/ if you were nice.... CLEARLY you are not. very rude. drinks were mid and the whole place seems so unwelcoming. never again... read more

My friends and I went to this place after some time at the beach. Service- That's why this review is being written. All of the bartenders seemed to have an attitude. When I simply asked for waters with umbrellas, yes quirky but oh well, bartender smirked and tossed them in the cup. At the end of the night, my phone was about to die and I had an hour drive home. I saw a charger behind the bar and asked the bartender if I could charge my phone at least a bit to get me home; she said no and I "better figure it out" because they are closing however she was still making drinks and people were still at the bar. In Customer Service customers are going to ask for things even if they're unusual. It's part of the job. A requirement should be when this happens to be approachable, nice and help out the customer, which these bartenders were and did not, especially if the customer bought drinks and tipped all night. Came here for drinks on a Friday night with a couple friends. It was quite crowded, and it took us a minute to get the bartender's attention to order drinks at the bar. The bartender was quite busy and didn't seem particularly engaged in answering our questions about the drinks. We wanted a drink that had an umbrella in it and the bartender told us, "any of the drinks can come with a tiki umbrella". So we realized that we needed to just order a drink quickly and go. I ended up getting a Singapore Sling. It was decent -- decently strong, decently sweet, decently good. Got decentluy buzzed after that.
