My husband and I were directed to The Kettle by our hotel staff when we were looking for a decent dinner at 10PM. After a long drive, we were hungry, as we hadn't stopped to eat on the way. Anyway, when we arrived, it was just after 10PM on a Friday night. Though the area was bustling, we were able to find easy street parking less than a block away. The restaurant was busy, but there were plenty of open tables. The place had a bit of the old diner type of vibe, but it was definitely more upscale and modern. We were greeted and seated right away. As we sat down, I saw some of the food being brought out and everything looked great. The menu was quite vast, so it took some time to decide. We decided to start out with the California Tots. They were a huge plate of crispy tots with cheese sauce, bacon and lots of other toppings. It was probably enough for us to share for dinner. However, I then had my mind set on the Tuna Manhattan, which was sort of a fancy tuna melt. The offered a regular tuna melt (off menu) if I preferred. The Tuna Manhattan was served on a bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a huge slice of avocado. It came with a side salad, fries, or soup. They also offered me some other sides I could substitute as well, such as onion rings or sweet potato fries. When I asked about the soup selection, they gave me four I could choose from. I ordered the French Onion. Anyway, the portions were generous and everything was delicious. It was also a great value for the amount and quality of food. The Kettle is open 24 hours. If you ever want late night (or anytime) eats in Manhattan Beach, I highly recommend The Kettle for a good solid meal. read more

They had people so it was still somewhat poppin at this hour. I ended up ordering a tuna sandwich, basically the melt but with no cheese or being toasted/melted. I like their tuna-- not too fishy. Sometimes tuna salad can end up being fishy. It was a healthy serving of tuna as well! Absolutely a generous amount. It came with a side of fruit, which the fruit was interesting. I never had a side of grapefruit before. It's a nice cozy place to stop by if you don't wanna end up at one of the fancy shmancy restaurants on the strip. As good as it's always been! We were in Manhattan Beach for the holiday firework show on the pier and came here after. We've been coming here for many years and the food here is consistently great! - and they are open till midnight if you are in the area and hungry late night. I got the Braised Pot Roast Dip (upgraded to a melt which adds melted provolone cheese - $19.95) which is their delicious pot roast with caramelized onion jam, horseradish mayo & au jus on a French roll. For my side (and I always recommend this at the Kettle) I get the French onion soup. The French onion here is to die for and is honestly dream worthy! Sunday lunch yesterday lacked the excellence of past visits. I can excuse the long wait for service once we were seated. The waitress seemed to have a scowl or attitude that was not welcoming. But then she might have been really tired or busy. I ordered the Patty melt which came with a choice of soup, salad, etc. I chose the French Onion soup. I've had it there many times in the past. And I asked for it (cup) to be upgraded to a bowl. When it came it looked good ... until I peered under the block of cheese and realized the "soup" was 99% broth with a few onions and a tiny piece of bread. It was ridiculous. The waiter could have given me a straw rather than a soup spoon. The Patty Melt also tasted great but had really poor presentation. It looked really unappetizing. Maybe I'm just being picky but it looked like meat in burned rye bread. But like I said it tasted very good. We were seated in a booth by the entrance door. Customers crowded in the area draping their arms down the inside of the booth hitting my guest in the head several times. I had to ask the cashier to please not permit crowding inside the entrance as there's a waiting area outside. No one asked how I liked my meal so I didn't say anything about the soup - which was a big time waste. The actual food itself is a classic type of food, nothing trendy or over the top but you get what you order, which to be honest, isn't a bad thing and I like how their simple their food is. The actual steak wasn't bad, good texture on it crunch on the outside but still kinda tender steak that was cooked well, comes with well seasoned potatoes and eggs. The rest of my party got a burrito and some pancakes and there were pretty good as well and I would say reliable flavors that you know. Back in the 90s and 2000s, I'd find myself here after bar hopping / clubbing on many late evenings enjoying a good meal. Really happy The Kettle is still open as many long time establishments in the area have closed down. This time, I brought my wife and kids here and as usual, the food did not disappoint. Our hostess was very patient and attentive. Kids were overwhelmed with all the choices to eat and they couldn't decide right away. Usually I found good quality at the Kettle and have been going there almost for 50 years. I ordered the Chinese chicken salad with tofu and gota pile of lettuce and tofu. This was 2 PM and the place was empty. The salad tasted awful to me. Seems the dressing was bad. I eat a few bits and my muffin and left. I looked for the Manager who has been there for 45 years. He wasn't there. The waitress basically ignored me and only asked if I wanted a box. No way did I need 18 dollars worth of lettuce I always like the breakfasts there, but I will stick to burgers and breakfast, as the salad is something that I would not recommend. The menu offers so many great options like guava juice (or apple, or OJ, or tomato, or cranberry) to "The Breakfast Club" meals. And if you get a sandwich or burger, I highly recommend trying their homemade soup. ** FRENCH MARKET ONION SOUP ** Let comfort feed your soul with a bowl of their soup. One of their most popular items on the menu, it's topped with a thick layer of parmesan garlic toast and melted mozzarella & Swiss cheese. The Kettle in Manhattan Beach is an excellent spot to share a bite to eat. It has a very homey feel to it which makes it so cozy and inviting. Its location can make it tricky to find free parking, but there are lots of metered parking and paid parking lots nearby for pretty cheap. We were sat right away, the staff were all very friendly, and our food came quickly. I got the pulled pork quesadilla and my friend got the kettle burger with fries which we split so we could both try each meal. It was so much food I had lots of leftovers which was great. I come here for their legendary french onion soup, but always end up trying additional items. Tonight I went with Southbay Crab Melt and it truly hit the spot. The blue crab patty was super tasty, very fresh, slightly crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The taste of crab was felt in every bite. The patty was covered by the warm pimento cheese and topped with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and onions. All of that was beautifully placed inside of a grilled brioche bun. When this place was explained to me before we stopped here I wasn't sure what to expect or what it actually was. What I do know was that I was not told about where we were going or what they had like it was some kind of big secret. Then I saw the giant kettle with the red lettering over the horizon as we created the hill down towards the beach, and I was immediately excited! What was this place? I still had no inkling of what they served, but I knew it was incredibly interesting looking and the only information I was given was that my wife loved Manhattan Beach and used to come to The Kettle frequently...I did not know walking up to the doors that this would become my favorite restaurant that we stopped at on our entire trip, and I'm constantly wishing daily that I could drop back in for one more bite. My first impression was that The Kettle is like a diner, but it is soooooo much more! From the ambiance to the people, to the downright elevated and delicious food and wide menu, I can't say enough about how much this place takes it to the top. I had such a hard time deciding what to order that eventually we decided to split a Cuban sandwich because if I didn't just compromise and go along with some suggestion, I would've been sitting staring for an hour. The kitchen is just behind a classic-stooled bar coffee counter and the sounds and scents of the food cooking permeate the air throughout the whole place, giving a wonderful feel to your visit. Everyone was satisfied and ended up ordering vastly different things off the menu. Oh, and did I mention they are open late??? Ultimately, I also had the French onion soup...and this was where The Kettle truly captured my heart. If you have read any of my other reviews, you will know I am a rabid soup fanatic. Not only was this my favorite food experience while we were in California, this was by far, the best French onion soup I have ever had in my entire life--and I have had A LOT of French onion soup. It wasn't overdone and it wasn't understated. Everything about it was perfect, and obviously painstakingly made from scratch. Savory and delicious with the right amount of bread to cheese to broth, unmatched in its complex simplicity. If I lived nearby, I would come here at least weekly for this soup on top of all the other wonderful food. From what I can gather, The Kettle is a Manhattan Beach staple. The people who have grown up here and live here all know it and most that I spoke to seem to love it, and with good cause. If you happen to be passing through or visiting any time soon, do not pass by the bright red kettle lit on the main corner in town, and stop in to have some soup or any other diner staple you have come to love over the years...or even some totally unique fusion or specialty dish you wouldn't expect to find in that setting. The Kettle is definitely a staple for my family because of the variety of options on the menu and the amazing view that the beach has to offer! The wait can be overly long along with parking being a bit of a distance sometimes because of the limited parking on the streets. I appreciate how consistent this place is, especially the muffins and tater tots as they are truly yummy. I do wish the pancakes were better as they are one of my favorite foods but on multiple occasions, it's been well done and hard on the top which is not something I enjoy. But all in all, the service is mainly helpful and I'm glad restaurants like this exist. read more

The guava was delicious but they give you such a small glass! I needed double that amount lol. We also tried the House Made Carrot Raisin Muffin. It's pretty balanced, not too sweet, but slightly burnt. I had higher expectations for it but outside of the butter which added a nice creamy texture, it was hard to really taste the carrot raisin. Seeing as my original review was 17 something years ago, I figured it was time for an update. This place still rocks as an all-night diner, a dying breed in Southern California. Their breakfast, especially both types of sausage, still hits as much as ever. And even though their giant muffins are no more, I'd still choose this joint to break my fast any day. And what with Uncle Bill's just up the street, this locale is a 1-2 punch of first meal excellence. The staff is still as stellar as ever. They managed to fill mine ahh Toby's coffee cup a combined 10-11 times, which must be some kind of record. This is one of the few places that anticipates your needs--drink refills, extra plate, more napkins, &c... you name it. That too is rare these days. And as always, I love the space. We agreed that the open dining room combined with all those windows just gives the impression this is a lively and jumping place to eat, and not some dark corner to hide away in. STEPH JUDGEMENT: A neighborhood institution that's still bringing the goods. I came here for the first time with a group of friends for brunch and had a great time. It was on a Monday, but between Christmas and New Year's so it felt like a weekend crowd. I think we had to wait about 30 minutes, which wasn't too bad. It's very spacious, with the look and feel of its early 1970s origins, but clean and well-maintained. I decided to get a cup of coffee and their Crab cake Benedict (poached eggs, house crabcakes, english muffin & orange cilantro hollandaise with potatoes and side of fruit). The orange cilantro hollandaise sounded kind of weird but turned out to be delicious. I forget what all my friends got, but I know we were all pleased. It describes itself as an "upscale diner" and I'd say that's an apt description, with its extensive menu of comfort foods executed well. Worst restaurant experience in Manhattan Beach. After awhile finally getting acknowledged, we got seated. Literally never got waters to start. And the so called server never came back to talk to us, no joke. He was an older guy. How is this man allowed to keep his job here with this level of unprofessionalism? After 10 minutes we got up and simply left. THANK GOD there is so many other options in the area with great food and services. We ended up with exceptional service at another place. As a customer for decades, it's always a treat to revisit the kettle. I've been getting the same thing for years, which is the Chinese chicken salad, and a blueberry muffin. Today was no different although we did add the buffalo chicken tenders, the Cubano sandwich and the kettle breakfast. There was a little bit of a weight on a Sunday around 10:30 AM. There are paid lots of meters around the area and parking can be a little difficult. Just a classic everything on the menu restaurants. We sat outside. The location was rather busy. I have to say the stand out of the meal happens to be the buffalo chicken tenders. You get seven very large crispy chicken tenders with a light sauce on it and ranch and vegetable vegetables on the side for $14. The kettle breakfast comes with three pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. If you're hungry or hung over, this is a go to for you the pancakes are light and fluffy with a hint of sweetness. The Cubano was just OK. Not our favorite sandwich, but I'm glad we tried it in general. It had a good portion of ham and cheese on a brioche bun. Service was a little slow today which I understand because the place was rather busy. But even just getting simple things like refills on our drinks or even the check took a little bit longer than expected. Just bring your patience. We'll definitely come back. read more
