Having gone to the Richmond location when I was last in Vancouver and loving it, I knew I had to go back to John 3:16. Unfortunately, the Richmond location was under renovations when I went so opted to try the Kingsway/Burnaby location instead. This was honestly my favourite meal during my most recent Vancouver trip and definitely lived up to the hype in my mind. The restaurant is located along Kingsway with a few other food places in the plaza. The parking wasn't the easiest, but luckily managed to snag a spot. There were a few tables ahead of my party so we had to wait about 15 mins during dinner hours, so not bad overall. Staff was super friendly and was readily available to help. The inside is nice and good seating. We got a large table for 4 of us and luckily we did with the amount of food ordered. We went through the whole menu and just knew we had to try almost everything (even with just 4 of us). Opted for the roti canai (one with beef and another with chicken curry), the beef rendang, char kway teow, beef satay, Hainanese chicken, curry laksa, and stir fried green beans. The roti was just as flaky and buttery as I remembered with the nice complement of the curry on the side. The beef rendang was super tender with lots of beef. The char kway teow had the nice wok hei and good flavours. The beef satay was tender with peanut sauce on the side. The hainese chicken was super flavourful and the rice was absolutely amazing. The curry laksa was creamy with a good hint of spice. The green beans were nicely stir fried and were a nice balance since we just needed some veg. Highly recommend trying as much as you can and just recommend the restaurant overall. I'll still be thinking about this meal and will definitely be back when I visit Vancouver again. read more

Their newer location in Burnaby is a good place for Malaysian cuisine and delivered decent service. Ambiance here is ideal as a dining choice for large group gatherings. There's free parking available and within walking distance via transit. I don't have a personal favorite dish at John 3:16 and usually go with the group preference. If dining solo, I would order the roti and the popular dishes. I mostly prefer this location over its other location for parking convenience and for its spacious interior. My group likes the corner with a round table for parties over 6 ppl. read more

finally made it to the new burnaby location of john 3:16 malaysian delights on kingsway. the restaurant is part of the john 3:16 malaysian delights group, which has been serving malaysian favourites in the lower mainland since opening its richmond location in 2014. the menu covers all the comforting malaysian classics you'd expect, from satay and roti canai to nasi lemak, curries, stir fried noodles and plenty of rice dishes. the reservation website was showing dates starting september 15th and onward, with an option to join the waitlist. interestingly, the waitlist showed no wait, but that didn't actually work when we showed up. instead, we had to scan the restaurant's qr code to join the waitlist, and there were six parties ahead of us. fortunately, the wait wasn't too bad, about 12 minutes for a party of three at around 7:30 pm on a thursday. there's patio seating outside, while the interior is casual and fairly straightforward, with warm wood tones, booth seating and a mix of tables and chairs. it's a comfortable enough space, although the ordering tablet was another story. it was finicky and seemed a little sticky, requiring multiple taps before registering, followed by a delayed reaction. i also couldn't find the drinks tab, which made the whole ordering process more frustrating than it needed to be. and yes, john 3:16 is a reference to the bible verse, rather than some mysterious malaysian menu code. we started with the chicken satay, four skewers served with peanut sauce, and a couple of pieces of cucumber and red onion. the skewers came out looking nicely grilled, with enough char to add some extra flavour without overwhelming the chicken. the ipoh sar hor fun was probably the standout for me. the silky flat rice noodles came in a generous amount of savoury sauce with prawns, chicken, vegetables and egg. there was plenty of sauce coating those noodles, which is exactly what i want with this style of dish. it was comforting, savoury and easily my favourite of the dishes we tried. the hokkien char mee was another solid choice, with the noodles coated in that rich, savoury sauce that makes this dish so comforting. we also ordered the nyonya eggplant, which was tender and nicely sauced. between the satay, noodles and eggplant, there was a good mix of textures and flavours on the table. the menu does a good job of covering a broad range of malaysian favourites, so this is definitely the kind of place where ordering a few dishes to share makes sense. the current burnaby menu has everything from satay and roti canai to nasi lemak, beef rendang, char koay teow, laksa and hainanese chicken on rice. service was the weak spot. everyone was friendly enough, but it was slow and not particularly attentive. we had to look around and flag someone down several times, first for a jug of water, then for extra pickled jalapeño, a box for leftovers and finally to pay. the extra pickled jalapeño also came with an additional charge, which felt a little nickel and dimey, especially when we were already dining in. overall, i'm glad to have finally checked out the burnaby location. the food was generally enjoyable, particularly the ipoh sar hor fun, and there's enough variety on the menu to make a return visit worthwhile. the ordering tablet and service could definitely use some work, though. hopefully, as this newer location settles in, those kinks get ironed out. one thing i do wish they had on the menu? ice kacang. because no malaysian food adventure feels quite complete without a colourful mountain of shaved ice, sweet syrup and assorted toppings. read more

I went here 2 weeks ago with my sister and her roommate. We went out together for a farewell dinner and thought this was a great place to go. We ordered Satay Chicken ($11.95), Mee Goreng ($16.95), Hainan Chicken Rice ($16.95), Lychee Juice ($4.95) and Sayur Lemak ($19.95). Everything overall tasted sweet. Not sure about lychee juice, but each dishes didn't have a distinct flavour. Mee Goreng reminded me of Pad Thai smothered in ketchup sauce. We ended up taking Hainan Chicken Rice, Mee Goreng and Sayur Lemak home. Food could've been better. I'd stick to Green and Oak instead. read more

We've been to John 3:16's other location multiple times, but this was our first time at the Kingsway location, and it met our expectations. Food was delicious (and fast!), restaurant was clean and modern and the portions were huge. We ordered 2 entrees and 1 appetizer for two people and had enough leftovers to pack home. One thing to note is that John 3:16 is closed on Sunday. Yes I made that mistake. On Jan 16, I finally got a chance to dine in here with 3 other people. B and I ordered roti canai, beef skewers, roasted chicken and rendang beef. My other ordered the char kway teow, a dessert, sambal dried shrimp filling and nasi lemak. The food was quite delicious. out of the 4 items I ordered, the roasted chicken was a bit disappointing because I expected the skin to be crispy. The roasted chicken did come with a soup. The beef skewer is interesting. It has a nice sweetness to it. The food was delicious. Service was so so. After finishing a dish, our plates were not removed and just ends up sitting there until the end of our meal. Ordering is done on an Ipad with pictures and I really like that. At least I know what I am ordering. The ambiance/décor is nice. The place is bright and is newly renovated with a very open seating. It is located in the basement of the haunted house but I don't feel any hauntedness due to the nice bright decor. Maybe all the ghosts moved upstairs. read more

John 3:16 is always one of the better restaurants serving Malaysian food. I used to go there often when it was in North Van. Not so much after it closed that location and was just in Richmond. Now a branch has opened in Burnaby Royal Oak area which is convenient for me. Getting here is a challenge. It occupies the ground level space. The entrance is nearer the parking lot of the plaza next to it. So it does not face kingsway. The entrance on the side street (Burlington) is not opened to the public. There is free parking for John 3:16 but it is located in the garage underneath the restaurant with the entrance on Burlington. It's dark and dodgy and stinky. I think it is much safer to park on the street or in the paid parking lot next to it. The restaurant is packed as expected. We were lucky to get a table. I got there shortly after it opened for dinner service and it was already 70% full. It was full house by 6 pm with a long line waiting for tables. The service was good, with the food coming out very quickly for some items. The roti took a while though. But char Kway teow, satay, Nasi lemak, rendang and dessert came out quick. I was a bit confused why they would serve the dessert at the same time as the other dishes. So some food was kinda pre-cooked and ready to be served. I had the panggang pulut udang which I always ordered at John 3:16. It didn't disappoint. It was good with decent filling of the udang (spicy dried shrimp floss) in the soft glutinous rice. I tried the char kway teow which lacked wok hei and was only ok. I also ordered the Nasi lemak as I could smell the aroma from the next table which had it. Mine was ok, the chicken was a bit tough. Ikan bilis (small fried anchovies) and peanuts were good. Rice was passable with slight coconut taste and fragrance. I had the pulut hitam which was also good. My friends had the beef rendang with rice. The rendang looked more like curry as it was liquidy and not real rendang which was to be a dry curry thing. The roast chicken was tender and came with fishball soup. Nice! The beef satay looked dry. The roti canai looked ok. Overall it's a good place for another option to have Malaysian food in this area. There is a 10% discount as part of their grand opening promotion. It ends January 31, 2026. That could explain the crowd too. read more

John 3:16 Malaysian Delights lives up to its name. The food is truly a delight to eat. Now that we have a location here in Burnaby, it's an even greater delight! We came here for a family dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year. Managed to book a table for 5:30pm. The restaurant gave us an hour and a half for our table. Good thing that made a reservation and came early because when we left, we saw a pretty significant crowd of people waiting to get tables. We had an assortment of dishes on the table. My absolute favorite was the eggplant dish. Slightly biased being a bit of eggplant freak but there were others at the table who aren't as crazy about eggplant as I am but also commented on how good the eggplant was. We had two plates of Char Kuey Teow noodles. One had sausage in it, and the other one was sausage free. Nice to know that the restaurant is willing to make adjustments such as omitting meat from certain dishes. We ordered a couple of drinks as well. One Lychee juice, and another Lychee drink with Soy milk. The Soy drink was pretty good and very different from your standard glass of Lychee juice; however, we unanimously agreed that the Lychee juice was better. This place is an absolute "must try", and once you do try this place, you'll find yourself wanting to come back again and again. The food here really is an absolute delight! read more

I plan to come back and try more dishes! Pro tip: if you can, try to commute. They only have a small parking spot. The food came out very quickly and almost all at once shortly after ordering. Beef Rendang was my favorite. The beef was so tender. The chicken skewers was also delicious. It tasted lightly marinated and I enjoyed the dipping sauce that came with it. However, we were disappointed that the sauce was on the colder side. Dips should be served at the same temperature as the main part of the dish. Otherwise it takes away from the experience/enjoyment of the dish. The samba veggies were OK. The seafood flavor was stronger than what I am normally used to. The Roti was good, but it was less of doughy texture and more of a bread-like texture. I loved having both the curry and sugar options to dip it in. The sweet potato roll was different, but very enjoyable. The noodles were also good, they were lightly flavored. Our bill came out to a lot less than all of us expected, which was a nice surprise. Customer service was ok. Tried John 3:16 Malaysian Delights and the food was really good, especially the fish, which was very tasty and almost melts in your mouth, but not quite. Everything was flavorful and well cooked, and you can tell care goes into the food. The wait was over an hour on a Saturday evening and very crowded, so plan ahead if you're hungry.
