I had to update my review. It's been a few years since I've visited John Brown BBQ. I was excited for dinner because I remember loving it, but tonight? It was a huge disappointment. Very dry meat, no smoky flavor, no bark. I was left with a dry pastrami that was like eating a jerky and the mac n cheese was made with an insane amount of flour for a roux. I taste nothing but flour. There was no cheese flavor at all. The ribs were not good either. I was in disbelief. They were tender but flavorless. This was not a representation of BBQ food. I give 2 stars for welcoming customer service and that's it. I definitely wouldn't waste my time coming back. It's hard to redeem yourself after spending a lot of money and horrible food. How did the kitchen staff think it was okay to serve a pastrami like that? An entire pound of it at that and the ribs? I'm sorry it's a no go for me.

This is a solid BBQ spot! We enjoyed the BBQ brisket and pastrami, and the ribs were truly excellent. The all sides were also delicious. A great place to satisfy your BBQ cravings!

First time back in a few years and it holds up. Burnt ends (got 1/3lb) are good but needs sauce. Their barbecue sauce is really good so not an issue. Rib tips 1/2 lb were better. Corn bread remains phenomenal and the reason to visit. Mac and cheese is also fantastic!

Burnt ends and corn pudding!!! OMG. Soooo good. I highly recommend. I also had the pastrami and the brisket but I didn't love as much as the burnt ends. The burnt ends pack so much flavor. You could taste all the seasonings and overall yumminess. Fatty and juicy and delicious. . For the pastrami, I used the mustard sauce and that was also very good. I also had the coleslaw which was fresh and delicious. I would absolutely come back and obviously, I recommend. There's a reason why this place is so popular and why there are lines out the door. We got there on a Saturday and it was rainy and there was no line but man! That is the most delicious Kansas City barbecue I've ever had. Granted I've never been to Kansas City. So I don't know how it compares to Kansas City barbecue but for this food lover, it hit all the yummy spots. The service was great and attentive. I want some barbecue now!!

The best BBQ I've had outside of Texas... Yeah, who'da thunk. Great BBQ in Long Island City NY. I've been twice and both times had to get the "burnt ends"...AMAZING! I also tried the brisket and rib tips, and while both were fantastic, neither holds a candle to the burnt ends.

I enjoyed my time at John Brown although I was disappointed as the bbq is a mixed bag. Very casual, beer wine soda. Order at a the counter and choose a table. Pros Sausage links, very good with a spicy kick Burnt ends off the charts delicious, by far the best I have ever had. Coleslaw was solid vinegar rendition BBQ sauces, mustard vinegar was very good Straight BBQ was good with a spicy kick Service was great, staff is friendly Cons: Pastrami was very dry Brisket didn't have a lot of smoke and was dry Pulled pork was shredded and ended up being dry. I will go back but narrow down my choices and I will try the ribs. If you go the burnt ends are by far the star of the show.

I have normally been a prime rib gal, but I think I'm gravitating now towards their pastrami and burn ends! Great time to go on the weekends rig before it right at 5P, fresh cuts and slow crowd. Wonderful service by "Ma" and the team. Always feels like home when coming here.

Looks like they're Chiefs fans. Good luck

Still tyne next bbq smokehouse In town. No doubt. Always have the meats. Quick service. I recommend it highly.

    Outdoor spot

The food was fresh and delicious especially the corn bread. I had the pastrami and my husband had the special chicken and ribs. The service was friendly and fast! The place looks small from the outside but it has a huge outdoor space and a closed in area in the back and the front room. Seems like a Kansas City sports bar from the looks. I will definitely go again

The best spot for burnt ends in LIC. Come here occasionally whenever I'm in the mood for this specific dish. The meat is incredibly juicy, and the seasoning is near perfection. Unfortunately, their other dishes aren't quite as good. The brisket, pork belly, and pork ribs tend to be rather dry. Sometimes they sell out of the burnt ends, so recommend coming before it gets near closing time to ensure they're available.

last time i came here was 2 years ago but still a solid bbq spot. got the rib tips which were much better than expected even though im not a fan of the sweet salty peppery flavor profile usually. the collard greens are also amazing and almost too flavorful and there is a hefty amount of meat in there. service is friendly and good.

This place is pretty relaxed, you order at the counter and sit wherever you like, and there's a game playing on the TV in the corner. I've definitely had better ribs elsewhere as it was kind of dry, and the brisket was better but still not amazing. Had to douse both in BBQ sauce just to taste something honestly. The corn bread wasn't bad but it was more of a sweet mushy texture with actual corn (not what I'm used to) though the mac and cheese was pretty good. It comes with a free slice of bread though that doesn't add much to the meal. For the portion and pricing, I think there's better out there.

The burnt ends were moist and probably the best among the meats; brisket was quite dry with mildly decent bark. The rib tips weren't fall off the bone tender and had not particularly flavorful. Pork belly could've been better and rendered down more. Corn bread tasted good but was structurally poor and crumbled. Coleslaw was fair and collard greens were decent.

I can't believe I've never written a review (maybe because I wrote one for Studio Square and in some way, I am still very much grieving its shuttering after all these years), but it's a solid spot and has carried on Studio Square's legacy. I've come here for various outings over the years and the casual, counter-style setting always works out perfectly for those big group settings. If you're from the South, obviously don't expect the bbq to be mind-blowing - it's simply a chill place where you can get fat and drink and not feel too bad about spending a lot of money and vibe at the same time. I've pretty much tried every side and meat they have to offer and the brisket always wins (pulled pork is a close second, though way too saucy for my liking). I've never been too crazy about any of their sides, though their potato salad is nice, at times. Great drink selection and pricing - they have a nice seltzer selection and reasonably-priced beer and cocktails.

We placed our order through the restaurant's ipad system, and somehow the bill ended up including extra items that we CLEARLY DID NOT order, and inflated quantities that were inaccurate. Whether this was a technical issue with the ipad, poor management, or outright incompetence, that's not the customer's problem. When the staff brought the extra skewers and soup dish to our table, we immediately expressed confusion and said, "No we didn't order this" but they IGNORED our concerns, insisted that we did, and left the food on our table anyway. Very strange and disturbing behavior. Did they really think their customers are so oblivious as to not remembering what they ordered??? What truly ruined our experience was their overall response. We had to argue multiple times to get the wrong charges removed from our bill. Not once, not twice, multiple times. It was as though we were being treated as the problem for questioning charges that never should have appeared in the first place. The staff showed zero accountability and seemingly zero concern for customer trust. Being overcharged is bad enough. Being forced into an extended argument just to pay the correct amount is outrageous. We regret spending our evening here. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

I would gave them a 2 star for yesterday's experience. First, the place was empty on a Friday night at 10:00pm. Probably have 3 takeout order while we were sitting down. The first time I went was on a weekday night back in December, and there were more patrons. Not sure if the place is going down hill, but they dont have slushies anymore. We had the mango slushies the first time, and the only drinks available was whatever bottle drinks they have in the fridge. Mind you, they dont serve you water, so you have to get drinks since the food is garlicky or spicy. We wound up getting the milk tea ice rice this time. It was ok. I never tried it, but the rice is a bit hard. I won't order again. Best dish is large eggplant. Very flavorable, maybe a bit too garlicky. Will order this again. Also, the chicken wing is huge, for the price of $3 each. Thats why we ordered 2 chicken wing this time. But, I think it wasnt grilled as nice as my first time. Still good since it is a lot of meat for the price of $3. Lotus root is also pretty good, glazed with sugar. The worst i would say is the lamb, a bit too chewy, lack of flavor. The bathroom has all sorts of postcard of famous album. I found that pretty neat. Lastly, I think the squid tentacles is much smaller than before.

It was so cold out the night I went so I was very happy they kept it nice and warm inside the restaurant. There's a very large selection of skewers, they have basically everything you could want. I especially appreciate that you can order just one of any skewer, unlike some other places where certain types only come in orders of 3 etc, allowing you to order a large variety even if you're dining alone. The seasoning was delicious, and every skewer was not coated in identical seasoning. None of it was spicy at all if that's what you're looking for, but none were lacking in flavor. The meat was juicy and you could taste the smoke from the grill. I loved the different textures of vegetables which were all well cooked. I'm still thinking about the crunchy exterior of the rice cake. I think my favorite skewer was the lotus root, which was perfecting complimented by the seasoning mix. An amazing meal! 16 skewers came out to less than $50. I look forward to returning!

The place is LOUD albeit with good taste of retro, 90's music and not the modern trash that floods the radio waves so I can rock with that. Place is sized pretty well with an outside seating area and plenty of tables inside the albeit dimly lit bar/restaurant. Coming into the place I was greeted by a blonde woman who seemed to be a supervisor of the area. She directed me to a comfortable seating area and a server took my order afterwards. The place was relatively busy so the wait for my food was kind of in the long range, about maybe 15 minutes. I ordered Chicken & Waffles with Iced Tea and the food was definitely worth the wait. That chicken was so good, a bit on the crisp side but it's solid in taste. The Waffle had such an awesome texture with the right measure of powdered sugar, decorated with Blueberries and Strawberries, the entrée was plated very well. The Iced Tea, I didn't know it was unsweetened so that threw me off but some sugar kinda fixed that. Service was also 'A' Tier. The place was busy so it was a tad on the slow side but they were very attentive. About 3 different servers tended to me whether it was about my order, how I liked it and paying for the bill when I was finished. That's dedication and I always give props to that.
