We've used him for about 10 years. He's very honest and does a great job with our multiple cars.

I called John Harrington last week to schedule an appointment for an oil change. He told me the earliest date he had available was today. I asked what time I can come to get it done and he said he gets here at 8AM. I've had work done here before as has my wife and in laws. I've since moved to ELA and I still drive 30 plus minutes to come because they seemed like a trustworthy mechanic. Well I came at my set time (as much as they say it wasn't an appointment) well than what is a scheduled time for an oil change if not an appointment? I showed up with my 2 year old on time at 7:51. Insured he had my number and told him I'd be walking around the neighborhood. 1 1/2 hours later I walked back to see they had my car in the front (with the hood left open) I figured it must be done. I was then told it wasn't even started. That they didn't have my filter and had to order it (again I have a history here, set an appointment and my car is on my file) no call to tell me they didn't have the filter, or how long it'll take to get there. He said it wouldn't arrive until 11. I had plans for my day so I took my car. After calling to reschedule. Hoping they would try to make wasting my time right. He hung up on me. I'll never go here again nor my family. I recommend you take your car elsewhere to get worked on. Btw after my 1 1/2 hour walk the dude was just playing solitaire and wouldn't even answer my phone calls every 10 minutes for the next hour. Go somewhere with an actual office staff that will make sure your parts needed are there for your APPOINTMENT. read more

My hubs was having transmission issues again with our 2007 Chevy Avalanche. We had gone to Amco last year and it wasn't that good, In fact we had to bring the truck back the very next week after they "fixed" it and we paid about $2500. We had just passed the 1 year warranty when the truck broke down again. We weren't about to go to back to Amco so I asked around and my boss highly recommended John. I of course yelped him and was pleasantly surprised that he had a handful of satisfied customers. John is a no nonsense guy so he very straight forward. He does not try to sell you extras nor does he try to rip you off. His work is legit and even though the truck took a week to fix its running great. Transmission fixes are pricey so we did shell out $2400. Less than what Amco charged and we haven't had to bring it back. 11 years later and I'm still a happy customer. It is so important to have an honest mechanic who will not upsell you or tell you something is wrong when it isn't. If you're a female who has been the victim of dishonest male mechanics who are betting on the fact that you don't know anything about cars telling you about "problems" your car has and pressuring you into fixing them right away, you will find John Harrington a Godsend. He does a great service to the community by being reliable, honest, and fair. I once told him I thought my car needed new brakes. He told me, "Your car does not need brakes yet. You can go a few more months on the brakes you have." He could have taken advantage of me and made me pay for brakes I didn't need. The owner is rude as hell. Got a flat tire right at the corner of his shop and he wouldn't even let me use his log nut wrench to exchange my tire out super rude and unprofessional. PLEASE READ BEFORE taking any of your cars to John Harrington Automotive. UPDATE as of MAY 2017. John refunded the cost of the radiator ( ~$230 - not the entire cost of the service) after Mitsubishi fixed our radiator. While we appreciate this, the entire process and way we were initially treated was unacceptable. Read the rest of my review to hear the saga. I had heard that John was an honest, fair, and reliable mechanic. Our recent experience (or better yet, saga) left a very bad taste in our mouth due to John and his team not properly fixing our car's radiator because he put the wrong one in, and forcing us to pay $570 for the wrong one that leaves us with a car that is now worth nothing because it can't pass a smog test due to his mistake. I understand that mechanics don't know everything, and that once they start working on a car, other problems might occur. But John didn't take responsibility for putting the wrong radiator in our car. And he didn't offer to put the right radiator in the car, without charging us for both! Here is what happened... Our radiator was leaking coolant, so we took it in to John to have it checked out. He said we needed to replace the radiator and hoses. Fine, we've gotta do what we've gotta do. After replacing the radiator, he calls back and says the radiator he put in is not the right one for our car. Not only is it not the right one, but because it is not the right one, our car won't pass a smog test because of the radiator he installed due to it needing to be a California emissions reducing radiator. He called the Mitsubishi dealer to see when the right radiator could be ordered. He said it was back-ordered until October. I called multiple dealers and the corporate office of Mitsubishi to find out when we could get a new radiator that is the right one for our car. They said by the end of April. We even had a connection with Mitsubishi who said we could order the radiator ourself and pick it up from a corporate office, and not have to use a dealer. I thought - great, we'll order the right radiator and take it to John to have it installed. I ask John if that's fine. He says he can replace the incorrect radiator with the correct one, but he has to charge us for the wrong one too. He said 'it's already installed, and I can't take it off or return it.' I understand that you can't just return it. But it was your mistake that you put on the wrong radiator without verifying the correct part number - which was easily found online or in the owner's manual. He told us we should 'play hardball' with Mitsubishi and make them pay for a new radiator. WHAT?! It was your mistake! You ordered the wrong one. Why are you trying to pass the blame on something you could have prevented from happening, and something that you could've fixed if you let us get the new one for you. So we're left having to pay over $500 for a radiator that isn't the right one. We also will have to purchase the right radiator and have it installed if we want our car to pass a smog test - which is required by law. So, yes, we'll have to do that. As of now, our car that should last another 5-10+ years is worthless because it can't pass a smog test. We can't ever sell the car because it won't pass a smog test. And this is all because John put the wrong radiator in our car. All I asked was that John realize that he made a mistake by putting in the wrong radiator. I don't mind paying for the right one. I don't mind paying for the labor to put it in. I just don't feel it was fair that we have to pay for his mistake on top of the fix. We should only have to pay for what we came in to John Harrington Automotive for - to fix our radiator (which we assumed would be done with the right one). The saga continues... Unfortunately, we won't be back at John Harrington Automotive, and I'd be careful about bringing any of your vehicles to him too. read more

I trust Harrington Automotive. Being a female I think trust in your mechanic is important. In my case, I have no idea what they are telling me when they say I need "this" or "that" .. and its going to cost "this much"... I have no choice but to say "okay". My mom took her car to another mechanic in San Dimas. I went with her to talk to the guy and he listed a bunch of things that she needed to do to the car; new brake rotors and what not, and his price seemed really steep. Something about the guy made me feel uneasy and I felt like we couldn't trust him. So, I talked my mom into leaving that shop and going to John Harrington. That first mechanic was NOT happy that we were leaving. ... Anyway, I went to John, explained our situation and what the other mechanic said. He did an inspection found out that our brake rotors were fine, we possibly needed new brake pads, and it was up to us if we wanted to get them then, or come back they really needed to be changed. It was so nice and refreshing to not be finagled and ripped off. I've been back to him many times since (my car is a piece..). And he has always had the lowest price estimates and has always been very helpful. If you have car trouble, go to John Harrington! read more

Excellent service, and fast/cheap It seemed like my electrical was not working at all in my truck, I had AAA try to jump start it , didnt work, I went and bought a new battery, still no life... Had it towed to John Harringtons, and by the end of the day it was repaired for 290 for a new starter with installation. it only came to about 80 bucks for labor. John is a man of integrity and profound skill when it comes to diagnosing and repairing automobiles. He's not looking to make a quick buck, make a boat payment, or sell you something you don't need. And he doesn't take advantage of people who are very car-illiterate. I have been coming here for the past 5 years exclusively. Even for minor things such as a simple oil change! I go to school 4hrs up north. I don't let anyone else touch my mustang. Not even the dealership (or should I say, especially the dealership!). The place is in a small industrial park at the end of a cul de sac (to the right). **I've read some reviews about past experiences and am a bit sad if they are true. One guy talked about the incorrect radiator being installed and John charging him regardless. And one person talked about being charged a price quoted differently on the phone. For the radiator review, I cannot truly believe it without seeing evidence or even hearing both sides of the incident BUT, if it is true, that's a shame to hear and I am very surprised/shocked. I wish he had brought the matter up in person and expressed his thoughts to John. He seems like a rational person. He doesn't read these Yelp reviews so posting stuff here won't make him reflect on a customer's experience. For the brake job guy...I think being quoted on pads for $140-150 and not taking into consideration tax and labor and calling it a ploy is a bit misleading. But hey, I know what it feels like to be bitter and disappointed when you accept a certain price and it's not what you expected because you forgot to factor in other costs or didn't ask what other costs might be expected. That's why I always ask, "what' is the out-the-door cost?" That means parts, labor, tax, and any disposal fees (if applicable). **Any brake work (new brakes, re-surfacing rotors, etc.) I take it to BrakeMasters. That's their soecialty. Everything else (non-brake related, I take to John). John sometimes will come out and greet you in the office if his daughter isn't there. He's a tallish, thin man. Very kind, very quiet and straight to business. You can tell he is very passionate about his line of work. I once took my car to get an alignment. John had "eyeballed it" and then I went to another shop (for a different issue) and I thought, hey why not have them check it for me. Well, they used a machine to do an alignment via laser. And it was damn-near perfect. Off by .01/.02. Didn't need to be adjusted at all. DOES NOT WORK WEEKENDS, so call ahead and plan ahead. Also, CALL A FEW HOURS BEFORE your car is supposedly ready for pickup. Sometimes they don't go according to schedule or he gets caught up on a car that is problematic and if his daughter isn't there at the front desk, he might forget to call you and let you know. I took my car to a mechanic that I had previously had a good experience with and he misdiagnosed it as a transmission problem and sent me to his transmission guy.... after $400 and tearing apart my transmission, we discovered it wasn't. I took it to John and he quickly figured out it was my catalytic converters. I wish I had taken it to John in the first place. He quickly got my car up and running again. This man is the Harry Potter of automobile mechanics. He is literally a wizard. I've been going to Harrington for a long time. My father introduced me to his shop and since then I've been going only to him. He does honest, quality work. He takes his time, I'll be honest about that. But he gets it done and if he doesn't, he'll look at it again for free and devote his time till the problem is solved. He is in a hole-in-the-wall business center so it's hard to find him. But he is worth the wait and trouble finding him. I'd always call first. Usually its him or his daughter on the phone. He is a very....meat and potatoes kinda guy. Not a fan of small talk. So don't take it personally. But he, like any human, appreciates gratitude and compliments. So don't forget to let him know how amazing he really is. Needed to find someone near work to get my front brakes replaced. Usually do the job myself, but with this heat I didn't feel like spending 3 hrs under my car changing the pads. I Yelped and saw this J Harrington place near my job and thought it would be perfect. drop the car off when they 1st open and it would be ready hopefully by noon. I called the nice lady who works the front office the day before and told her I would be bringing in my little put put car in the morning for the brakes and asked how much it could cost. She quoted me as the pads costing between $140 and $150. If the rotors had to be changed then it could go up to $200. I thought the prices were fair and said I would see her in the morning. Morning came and I was 1st one in the door when they opened. She said once the mechanic looked at the car she would call me with the exact price. I didn't worry since I was already given a fair price the day prior. She called at 9 am and told me the cost of the brake job would be $209. I was a little shocked but figured maybe they had to replace the rotors, so I asked what was needed. She said, "Just pads." I asked why so much, she said that $209 was normal price. I told her the price she gave me the day prior was $150. She seemed unaffected and simply said it takes the mechanic 1.5 hrs of labor at $85 per hour plus the cost of the pads. I was about to start an argument but figured it wasn't worth the hassle. I needed them done and they already had the car up so I'll eat the extra $50. I don't know if this is a ploy or tactic knowing most people will just agree like I did.. I don't know. So I told her just get it done. Now remember, it's 9 am, I made an appointment the day prior and I was the 1st one in the shop that day, so I was confused when she said, "We'll try to get to it today and get it done for you." What? Wait, what? She said they had to go get the pads and then they have a lunch break so she can't guarantee the car would be ready today. I am an older guy and I have never heard of a shop needing 24 hrs to do a simple pad replacement on the brakes. I told her politely, if it can't be done by 2 pm, put the tires back on the car, lower it and I will be there in 15 minutes to get it. She said, "Oh you need it by 2 pm? let me check." She put me on hold, returned and said they could do it. She called me at 130 pm and told me it was ready. I went there, paid their inflated price of $209 for 2 front brake pads and left. That was a week ago and the brakes are squeaking. I Yelped a mechanic by my house and found Patrick at A-Tech Auto in Chino. What a breath of fresh air. I brought my daughters Honda to Patrick and he replaced the pads and machined the rotors for how much? $145. I had him take a look at my car which he did for free. He said the pads were fine, there was just a little too much tension or something like that. He took 2 mins and fixed it for ... How much? Free... I won't be back to J Harringtons. Don't like their tactics but 3 stars because they did the job and the front desk lady was cool even though she mislead me whether deliberately or by mistake. read more

Thanks to yelp I found this place. Took my car in for new brake pads and rotors and the service was perfect. The best part is I was ready to pay for new rotors but they were able to machine them one last time before I get new ones (for some reason my car dealership said they couldn't machine them again). read more

This guy is great. I can't say enough about him. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix that, for its age, is a great car with pretty low miles. Anyway, last summer, it started stalling out when I started it. I took it to my regular shop, and finally out of desperation, to the dealer, and after getting nickle and dimed for over 5 months to the tune of about 6000 grand, I was told to just buy a new car. Yeah, with all the money I just spent on repairs? They kept telling me they fixed it, but it kept stalling, and then it was always something new and very expensive that needed to be replaced. I finally gave up and decided I'd just drive it until it died. Then it started leaking some type of liquid, and my neighbor suggested I take it here. The leak was just something that needed to be tightened, but the miracle was that John found out way my car was stalling. It was the fuel pressure regulator ( or something like that; hey, I'm a chick ) and the grand total was $300. My car runs like new, no stalling. I sent a friend here who had a quote from the same dealer for brake repairs for $1500. It was kinda strange, cause he had just had work done on his brakes not to long ago. Turns out, he only needed 1 of his brake pads changed. John is honest and fair in his pricing. Come to this guy!!! read more

John is honest and straightforward: he doesn't try to sell me repairs I don't need, and on two occasions has let me know that repairs recommended by tire shops were not necessary. His prices are very reasonable. During my last visit he waived the labor charge for installing a new antennae when it turned out to be easier than he had expected. John is quiet but polite, and his staff is friendly and outgoing. Overall, my experience so far has been excellent, and I will continue to rely on John Harrington for car repairs. read more

How many times have you gone to a repair shop and, a few days or couple of weeks later, something else goes "bad". When John Harrington fixes something IT STAYS FIXED, without subsequent collateral repair work being required. John and his team thoroughly evaluate the problem and provide you with repair options that include his recommendation. They also notify you of other potential problems, including their severity and cost estimates. There may be shops with lower up-front costs than Harrington Automotive. But I am certain you will not find a more trustworthy and accurate shop! I would highly recommend them to anyone!! read more

I have been extremely grateful to John Harrington Automotive over the years. He has fixed my family's cars for forty years. He kept the junk cars my sister and I drove as teenagers road safe and now as adults still gets our business. My parents still bring in their vehicles. He is extremely knowledgeable, honest, works as fast as he can, communicates well and doesn't gouge his customers. Mr Personality! Seriously.. We dropped the truck off at 8am in the morning. He wasn't even there yet although his hours state 8am - 5pm. He cruises in 15 min late and literally just walks by us and doesn't say a thing! No good morning, no hi, nothing at all. Finally he decides to speak and says he will take a look at the issues I was having w the truck. I tell him Im gonna call him around noon to get an update. Socially this guy is challenged. Don't mistake it for a no nonsense attitude. I have a no nonsense attitude and it doesn't make me socially challenged or restricted. Anyway I call at noon and he tells me my truck is too custom for him to work on. He says he doesn't feel comfortable working on my truck since it has a fully custom suspension and lift. Someone that reviewed him earlier mentioned he worked on custom cars so I guess thats not true! Then I ask him to check my alternator belt because its making a squeaking noise. I figure at least if he fixes this or tells me what he thinks is wrong it won't be a complete waste of my day having my truck there. I did drop it off at 8am. He tells me in a very relaxed monotone voice "We haven't checked that out yet but I'll take a look at it tomorrow". I was like ok.. It was only 12 noon and he couldn't just pop the hood up and take a quick look!? I mean the interest in taking care of me as a customer was below 1 star. Not only is this guy socially challenged and awkward, he completely wasted my day. He clearly seen my truck in front of the shop in the am. Its pretty obvious my truck is customized. If there was an issue or concern about working on it or if he was busy that day he could of just said something. I wouldn't be here writing a bad review if he would of at least "acted" as if he cared to help me out. Instead he came off as rude, weird, anti social and not interested in new business all together. I've worked with a dozen shops on my car builds and have never had an experience like this. He made me feel as if I brought a space ship for him to work on. If you have a stock car and don't care about personality, this is the perfect shop for you! read more

He lets us know when we can delay a repair and what needs to be done immediately. I agree with Amanda V., it's very important to have an honest mechanic , especially if you're a female. Our whole family has been going to him for years and would never go anywhere else. The last time I took my car in because when I'd go to start it, the starter would make a really funny sound unlike any other "bad" starter sound I've heard in all my years of driving. Anyway, unlike some other places I've been to in the distant past, instead of telling me I needed a whole new starter (and who knows what else?) he advised the starter had come loose and he fixed it for $20.00. John Harrington was recommended by a friend and so I called him about a service on my 1961 Corvette. He was open to setting an appointment as I wanted to wait for it. John was so meticulous and thorough, I am very impressed. Remember this is a 50 year old classic and requires service quite different from a modern car. My SUV needed a fuel pump. John provided me with an estimate over the telephone and stated it would take one day. It was not a small job as the 30 gallon fuel tank was full and the tank needed to be removed to replace the pump. At the end of the day I had a new fuel pump, a great running car, for the estimated repair price, and I still had my tank of gas. read more
