John came out and did nothing. He did not attempt to walk around the property as other termite inspectors do. I explained to him I had dealt with subterreanean termites that were treated with powder. Then I told him the same company treated some kitchen cabinets with bait. Then explained another company found the same dry wood termites inside and out. Near my front and back porch. Was treated. Inside where the skylight was. Treated there. The lights in my kitchen were opened and guess what termites? He put bait in about 6 overhead led lights. Then found some in the one bathroom and opened up a glass enclosure that had wood inside. He treated that also as it had termites. So I told him they are coming down the skylight. Well his answer was call a handyman. To seal it. Then I asked him to please check out the roof. Well no can do for him. One was on the bedspread and I photographed it. He claims it wasn't a termite. Then explained I had to use a bug zapper to keep them out when they came down the skylight. So he tells me he sees nothing. Call your previous termite company. You bet I will. This is someone who does not do his job. Wasted our time and a no care attitude. Just because they aren't swarming now does not mean anything. Because once the heat starts they will be here again. Thanks a lot for nothing! Bye the way. His wife told me he could do the inside skylight sealing and check the roof. She is the secretary or whatever. Just had my house fumigated on 05/30/24. These folks did a tremendous job. I have a tile roof and was fearing the worst regarding damage to the tiles. No tiles were damaged!! They went so far as to pull off a Jasmin bush that I have fixed to my house off the trellis to save the plant. They left the house in good condition and went through to make sure that there was no items left unwrapped. Overall a great crew and shout out to the ladies who man the office. Debbie and Doty are wonderful and very helpful with the ton of questions that I through at them. Recommend that you get a U-box or Pods to store your stuff temporarily during the fumigation and it is worth hiring a security company to check in on your house while you are away. I was really hoping that our hiring John Kowan to complete our fumigation would have resulted in a much better experience. We received 4 quotes and all where within $250 of each other. I chose this company who was the most expensive because of John's confidence that "his" crew was very familiar with working on and navigating around clay S tiles. He acknowledged that breaking a "few" tiles was probable. No problem. I asked if pictures could be taken before and after so that I knew how many tiles were broken during the fumigation and was told by John that it was not realistic but that I would receive a before and after count. My first issue is that I never received a before count and the crew chief nonchalantly told me at the end of the job that his guys counted 50 broken tiles. That seemed like a high number since I had all the broken tiles replaced 2 years prior and my last fumigator only broke 8 which had been replaced. I called John to express my concern and he stated that he didn't know what to say. It happens, they broke 135 tiles a week after my job and that is why he includes the waiver in his contract. I told him that I had 3 companies come out to inspect the roof and they counted over 100 each which means (1) his crew did not bother to count before or after and lied about the number they broke and (2) they made no attempt to navigate on the roof carefully. Unlike John I was there the day they started and completed the fumigation and saw first hand how the workers walked around like they were on a shingle roof. John gave us a $200 break on our bill but it is a far cry from the $2200 we paid to replace the 133 tiles they broke. In addition, one of the crew used our restroom the day the tarp was removed without asking and did not have the decency to spray or check to see that everything went down. The bathroom smelled horrible and I had to clean the toilet bowl because he left stains on the side (he dry docked). Not a pleasant thing to see and completely unprofessional. Finally, I learned that John is more like a middle man and subs out to another company. His job is to get your business and bring another company in to perform the real work. It would have been nice to have known this from the start and for the business owner to be present during the operation. Oh and by the way. About their inability to take before and after pictures of the tiles. It is very easy John. Stand on a ladder and turn your head left to right then move the ladder and do it again until completed. Attached is roughly 20% of what was damaged. I walked up on the roof the day the tiles were replaced. I'm not a professional roofer, fumigator or "middle man" and was able to cover all 2000 sf without breaking a single tile. Those of you with Spanish tile roof - I suggest that you use another company. The 3 neighbors who I had recommended John to before the work was completed all tore up the business cards and will be contacting the company I should have gone with - Viking Fumigation. read more

Disappointing. Had them come out to take and look/estimate for termite treatment. I told him that another company had already come by but could not decide whether subterreanean needed to be treated. He said probably not but did not bother to try looking around the house or the basement himself to see exactly what needed to be done. Even upon first greeting it seemed like he didn't care at all about the appointment. He just ended up measuring my home and gave me an estimate without really looking at anything. As a first time homeowner it's extremely hard trying to figure out what to get inspected and when to get it inspected. With all the disinformation flying around sometimes it's easier to plunge in and just do it! It's been a few years since the last termite inspection and unsure of if we had to do it or not, we decided to call John Kowan Termite Control to see how this would go. We initially scheduled a full inspection since we don't even know what to quite look for that indicates termites. Before our appointment we had an informative follow-up call confirming and also asking for a few details. From that call we already learned that a typical inspection is around 8-10 years! Fast forward to our appointment and I really have to say, John was definitely the guy you would want coming over anytime anything went wrong. Of course he's in the termite business so that's what I'm going to call him for! Friendly, courteous, quick, on time (few minutes early actually), and knows what he's doing. My review is substantially similar to the other 5-star reviews. John Kowan Termite Control made a difficult decision easy. A high quality, professional and family-owned business that offered the job for a very reasonable fee in a low pressure environment. It was not easy to convince my wife that this had to be done, yet it was the only way to do it correctly. John was able to explain to my wife what I had already tried to explain in that it was necessary, safe and worth the minor inconvenience. And, you only have to do it every 10-years or so. It is not easy to have to move out of your house, double bag food, entrust your home to someone that is going to inject a chemical in it, risk losing plants in the process, not to mention the security concerns given someone my try to break in while the house it tented. Both John and Debbie explained the entire process and what precautions we could take depending on our concerns and other considerations. As others have said, the Kowans' made the decision easy. As it was our first time undergoing fumigation/tenting, and John and Debbie held our hands the entire way. Mostly Debbie held my hand, as I called her often with questions and concerns. She was patient, informative, reassuring and quite pleasant. And, she was easy to reach, and when I got her answering machine, she timely returned my calls and spent quite a bit of time speaking with me each and every time. They were on schedule and highly communicative. The crews were very professional and knew their stuff. Since we were fortunate enough to stay across the street at a neighbor's house since they had left town, we were able to monitor the job and ensure the safety of our house. I can only echo what everyone else here has said. Noticed a pile of frass yesterday. Cleaned it up and there was a fresh new pile awaiting us this morning. Called our regular spot-treat guy, but he wasn't available until later in the week and we wanted to get the treatment done sooner. I'm very wary of termite companies since SO many seem to have commission-based sales reps who are constantly fear-mongering to force immediate tenting. I realize that tenting is necessary every 10 years or so, but am not prepared nor wanting to tent at the moment. Found John Kowan on Yelp and we gave them a call. Debbie was very nice, gave us a rough price quote, and let us know that he could come out within the hour - perfect! He arrived as expected and was very friendly and personable. Showed me exactly where the damage was originating from and where he treated. He also showed me where some other damage I hadn't yet noticed was. I asked him if he thought we needed to tent and he said we should be fine at the moment, but might reconsider if we saw more spots popping up within the next six months or so. As he was preparing to leave I asked about payment and he told me to just call the office and tell Debbie it was a "below minimum" job. I did just that and she gave me a price that was less than the original price quoted on the phone. She also said that if we noticed more frass in the same spot after a couple of weeks, to call and he would come out and re treat for free. She was very friendly and fair.
