I could gush all over this review but will try to practice some restraint. I found Dr VanCamp after researching holistic dentistry at length. I have horrible teeth and their issues have been compounded by bad orthodontics as a child and some less than desirable dental work as an adult. The level of professionalism and warmth in this practice is simply astounding! They leverage technology like I've never seen before in dentistry. I had a crown replaced today and for the first time in my life had no nitrous oxide, an easy and painless injection followed by seamless execution of crown replacement. The crown was 3d printed on site in under twenty minutes! I have a long road of work and reconstruction ahead to remove mercury fillings, failed root canals and metal based crowns. But I'm excited to have a more bio compatible approach to dentistry and more thrilled to have Dr. VanCamp and his amazing staff (Dennis and Jose) at the helm. How many products did I walk out of there with, and a cancer screening completely out of pocket because not approved by any insurance. Wow! I just received a really nasty & extremely unprofessional note from Brandy, their accounts manager. Amazing that for a $19 overlooked balance she sees no cause to temper the "Guido" tone. Certainly worth raising a brow, if not a complaint or two. Questionably qualified application of free whitening. The abuse is hardly worth the completely out of pocket last $134 paid & mentioned in the same letter. She wields the words unpleasant & aggressive. You bet! Do they actually approve of her writing to any patient in that manner? The "email us link" on the website goes nowhere, I tried to email this to tell their goon to put her brass knuckles away, they will have my $19 check. Look elsewhere, an expensive mistake. read more

Run!!! Run far and fast from this dental office! Or, go here if you want to lose weight, because you'll feel excruciating pain after they work on you, any time you try to eat cold things, or sweet things, or hot things, or neutral things like water. You will have to sign extensive legal release forms. (How was I so foolish not to realize this was an indication that this isn't the first such event at their office? I guess I thought it was just The American Way.) Then he'll pressure you into getting unnecessary fillings (which other dentists have since identified as nothing more than coffee stains.) He will joyfully laser away "diseased" gum tissue telling you it will grow back, which is just not how it works. He's actually creating more gum recession. Oh, and you'll suffer the hell of badly administered freezing, too, so your jaw will be sore for a week. And, all these unforgettable services will cost you thousands over the insurance amounts! I had five assuredly-small gum line fillings done by Dr VanCamp and I've been in pain for three months now. On my second trip in to correct or assess more than just the pain problem, but also the fact he left the filling surfaces rough and bumpy, (which is causing compressive pain in my molars, and hopefully not a lot worse,) the bumpiness wasn't resolved and he could offer no helpful solutions to the pain. Honestly it's unlikely I'll ever trust a dentist again after this nightmare. I will be contacting the California Board of Dental Examinamers about this experience because the office can offer me no solution other than to come back and let him do further damage. Go here and you'll also enjoy being left waiting in the chair for long stretches with bulky X-ray gear jabbing your soft palate (when they aren't accidentally bumping it there themselves), with a light blasting into your retinas while noxious smooth jazz plays on a loop. Please don't let this happen to you. Respect your dental health and avoid this dental office will all your might, or you might also be unable to escape this Little Shop of Horrors. ...Update! Six months later I am still in pain. In fact, his crappy fillings are now starting to fall out and insurance won't cover getting them done anywhere else within the same year. I am so disappointed with how much I was charged to cancel my appointment $150.00. Dennis didn't really want to hear the reason he automatically said "how are we going to take care of this balance and can you come in on". I had all intentions on going in for my scheduled cleaning which the last one SOMEONE screwed up and "yes" I ended up paying for out of pocket, since I had maxed out my yearly cleanings, did I charge them "No!" I still paid it in installments but I paid. The reason I needed to cancel at 10:20AM this morning for a 3:30PM appointment (which I am sure he called someone and said "we have a cancellation can you come in at 3:30 BANKING AT MY EXPENSE") is my co-worker had a Family Medical Emergency and had to leave the office, NOT MY FAULT!! Again I had all intentions to walk to my appointment and get my scheduled cleaning. I really think it's time to find a new dentist, thanks Greg and Fernando, this has been a NIGHTMARE!! and I am out $150.00 which is ridiculous to charge. read more

van camp seems intense and qualified, but there is an up-sell atmosphere that i felt undermined trust and credibility. the "free" whitening for new clients really means you will pay for an exam and at least one cleaning and some other "therapy" before he will even discuss whitening. that felt like hurdles were put in place on purpose, but of course it was described as necessary for safety. i get regular exams and cleanings, and have always been told i am lucky for having such good teeth. even van camp started with a favorable review, but then he started getting rough with me and said i was in desperate need of services. my favorite statement was "you do not even have to go to dentist school to see how bad that looks". actually, sorry, you do because i did not see what is so bad. instead of admitting my stupidity i asked "how fast will it deteriorate" and "how soon do i need to fix it", but these were clearly alien concepts and van camp said "no way to know", which i took to mean he just fixes everything no matter what the risk. when i started to check out i found that i was being asked to buy a management plan that included oral hygiene instructions, mouth cleaning, a "periodontal instrument with instructions" (e.g. a toothbrush) and home care fluoride (e.g. mouthwash). all this could be yours for a one-time low price of $584. to be fair, that is the cost of two visits, along with a toothbrush and mouthwash. van camp recommended i show up at least four times a year, so my annual cost now would be $1168 just to stay clean. ouch i was asked to sign a waiver if i declined "treatment" and also agree that "routine cleaning will not benefit my health". why do i have to buy a toothbrush and mouthwash from them? i mentioned the rough treatment, but van camp said i was in such bad shape i was extra sensitive. i almost believed him, except for the fact that several times he was grabbing my lips with his thumb and forefinger and squeezing and pulling them in ways i have never felt before. no need for that, thank you. also, i was given a "this new digital x-ray" speech when i first sat down. no doubt that will cost me a pretty penny. but more to the point, the tech said the radiation was 90% less than before. i used to work in radiology, so i am familiar with the technology. what i did not expect was that the tech would proceed to delete and then retake the x-rays, as though he were using a cheap digital camera. at one point i asked him "how many re-shots do you get before you eat up that 90% margin?" the assistant proudly displayed my entire exam process, from x-ray to photographs, from notes to policies, on a screen in front of me. "what do you think?" I was asked. i stared glumly at the lower-right of the familiar task bar and said "well, you you are putting my sensitive health records on XP running an open VNC server with an expired copy of free antivirus." when I arrived home I found an email from the front desk signed "Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG. Version: 7.5.524 / Virus Database: 270.6.3/1613 - Release Date: 08/15/2008 5:58 AM" figures. I should have stood up and left as soon as I saw something with a "Start" button used for medical equipment. sadly, i started out with a really positive impression and ended up guarding myself and my wallet, wishing i had taken more time to find a dentist i could trust. read more

my experience was very disappointing. This dentist was recommended by a friend. At the first visit, they told me I had to pay in full, and then get reimbursed myself from my dental insurance. As it turned out, they did submit to my insurance, for an amount larger than they charged me, and got reimbursed for it. It then took them 3 months to reimburse me. I had never had that happen to me. At my second visit, they recommended to put a crown on my only and lonely wisdom tooth, one that should have come out 20 years ago; the one that every previous dentist had many good reasons to recommend that it be pulled. Needless to say, that at that point my confidence level in their otherwise friendly staff dropped into the freezing range. read more

I had a great experience with Dr. Van Camp. The staff was incredibly friendly and the equipment was state of the art. Digital x-rays were awesome and everything was very comprehensive. I do (sorta) understand the reviews about feeling slightly pressured, but that's what communication is about. Ask questions, it's your mouth. Is something necessary? Or do they "suggest" it. For those who are upset that they don't take your insurance.....well go to someone else! It's not nuclear science. Some medical practices take certain insurances and some don't. It's just how it is. I have been going to Dr. Van Camp for over 7 years. I was referred by my wife who came home one day and said you won't believe the great experience I had at the dentist. They are friendly, knowledgable and very professional. In my previous dental plan Dr. Van Camp was considered out of network. So I pay a little bit extra to get excellent service. A few years back I thought I should go to another dentist in network. The other dentist was like going to Walmart. It was so bad, that other dentist nearly had me spend a considerable amount of money on something that Dr. Van Kamp knew was the problem right away because he knew my history. Dennis, the office manager, was able to schedule an appt for me with Dr. VanCamp that afternoon. My appt was after the last regularly scheduled patient for the week; however, Dr. VanCamp and his staff had no issue staying late on a Friday to see that my emergency was resolved. They did not rush the procedure or compromise the quality of care when they could have otherwise already started their weekend. Do not believe these 5 star reviews for Dr. VanCamp. I do not recommend Dr. VanCamp. My holistic dentist of many years is no longer accepting insurance and so I decided to see Dr. VanCamp. It was time for my regular dental cleaning and I asked for the cleaning when I made the appointment. However when I got there, I was told Dr. VanCamp does not do the cleaning at the first appt. I was told by Dr. VanCamp that I have to do a dental cancer test that he does for all his patients that is mandatory. The reason I went to see Dr. VanCamp is because he was in my insurance network. But guess what, the cancer test is not accepted by insurance. Then Dr. VanCamp did my oral exam and spent about 45 minutes explaining at least 5 urgent very expensive dental work that I supposedly needed. I was very surprised to hear this as I have always maintained good dental health. Dr. VanCamp also required that I do a 3D MRI of my mouth for which he charges over $450 which I declined. So in the end, I did not get the cleaning done which was important and I was charged close to $100 which I had to pay before leaving. Then I found another holistic dentist that is in my insurance network and it turned out that I did not need any urgent dental work and that I did not need the dental cancer test and the 3D MRI would have been completely unnecessary. Keep in mind that while a holistic dentist may accept insurance, it does not mean you won't have to pay a lot more out of your pocket. Make sure to get second and third opinions before spending your entire savings on unnecessary dental work. read more

Dr. VanCamp and his entire staff are friendly & down-to-earth, extremely knowledgable and motivated to give you the best treatment available. I recently saw Dr. VanCamp and his team for the first installment of my mercury detoxification, i.e. replacing my toxic, out-dated amalgam fillings with safe, clean porcelain. I originally went in for a consult and received a set of xrays and a thorough exam by Dr. VanCamp. This was the first time I ever had a dentist show me the xrays and discuss each of my problem areas with me. I needed 6 total restorations-- 4 were amalgam fillings that I wanted removed for health reasons (not only was the material toxic, but the fillings had over time caused my teeth to break and decay). The other two needed restorations were composite fillings that were causing decay and needed to be replaced. Dennis at the front desk worked with me after the appointment to prioritize the work that needed to be done and to set up a payment plan that worked for me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to go through with the treatment. He was also able to schedule my procedure only one week from the date of the consult, even though Dr. VanCamp had a very busy schedule. In the course of that week, some things happened in my personal life and I had to make some changes to my original plan for the first set of restorations-- Dennis was more than willing to work things out and was very understanding. The actual procedure went great! I was quite impressed by the lengths Dr. VanCamp goes to protect his patients and staff from further mercury exposure. Sure, it was a bit uncomfortable, like all dental procedures are, but Dr. VanCamp and his staff continually checked in to make sure that I was as comfortable as I could be. Dr. VanCamp was able to make my porcelain inlays right there on the spot-- a huge bonus! I was thrilled by the results when Dr. VanCamp shared before and after photos with me. He recommended that I take a few supplements over the course of the next year to help further rid my body heavy metal toxins-- he even offered the first round to me at no charge. I'm 100% satisfied with my experience so far and look forward to getting the last few restorations completed in the coming months. I hate going to the dentist and after an extremely painful 3 hour root canal I was in no hurry to go back for an implant. My brother told me I should try his dentist Dr. VanCamp before my gums started to recede, yikes! I went in for a consultation. The offices were clean, hi-tech and within walking distance of BART. After a quick exam, Dr. VanCamp laid out the full procedure and costs of a porcelain implant. They are a green office, and he's the only holistic/biological dentist in this part of the country, so that's cool. The implant itself was painless and took just a few visits to complete. I never thought I could get excited about going to the dentist. Well, Dr. Van Camp proved me wrong. First off he's the sweetest guy you'll ever come across. He's got all of the amenities like warm gel wraps for your neck and biscotti, etc. His hygienist Linda is not only a hoot but she's fast, painless and does a great job. The office is totally tricked out with all sorts of high-tech dental stuff. My last dentist screwed up one of my fillings and my tooth took a turn for the worse. Dr. Van Camp said I needed a root canal. Eeeeks! No problemo. It was like getting a filling. It was not only fast and painless but from looking at the x-ray I don't think it could be more perfect. The kicker is that he CNC milled the crown in the office out of a solid piece of ceramic instead of giving me a temporary one and then having some lab do it. The thing fits like a glove. I'm considering having him tear all of my teeth out so that he can just make a full set of perfect crowns. He's THAT good. If you go and see him tell him I sent you. read more

I have always dreaded going to the dentist. Unfortunately, there was a time when I lacked dental insurance and during that time I began to experience various dental issues. As soon as I got dental insurance again, I searched for a holistic dentist and came across Respect Your Mouth. I remember my first visit - feeling nervous and expecting all bad news given the amount of time I went without seeing a dentist. However, my nerves were calmed by the friendly staff and their efforts to make me feel comfortable. The staff is excellent - quick, efficient, and pleasant. I never thought a dental experience could be this great! I have been in for a few different procedures/services. First a 90 minute conultation, an extremely thorough cleaning by lisa, a whitening treatment by Jose, and a few fillings. I have always been terrified of the dentist and a major nervous reck with sharp objects and drilling sounds anywhere near my face, but everyone there really knows how to put you at ease, make you cozy and truly deliver a relaxing experience. I just received four fillings that were completely painless by Dr. John Van Camp and am so amazed with how easy it was for me, 2 hours later i felt like it never even happened!! Seriously, that is a big deal!!! The facility is really clean, nicely decorated, has relaxing music, and fantastic customer service. They are very knowledgable, have top notch technology and equipment, and take lots of before and after photos that you can see right then and there giving results right before your eyes. I had laser gum treatment with Linda the hygienist about 3 months ago and had my follow up appointment last week. I have always had a problem in the past with bleeding gums. Being someone who cares about my health and smile, I never understood why. Well, this is the first time since I can remember ever having gums that don't bleed and a good check up. It was easy and comfortable. My teeth and mouth feel great! Dr. VanCamp's a mercury free dentist and I can't wait to have these ugly black fillings replaced.
