This review is for catering/deliveries only: I have to say, Johnny Doughnuts are good! So good that I wanted to have them cater treats for my office. But sadly I can never rely on them for any catering orders or deliveries. (12/2/17) The first time I placed an order for delivery (8 dozen), there were issues with the bakery and my order was delayed. They were proactive and reached out that morning letting me know there were issues with the kitchen and the delivery would be delayed. While I was disappointed with them being late (2hrs), I figured it was due to growing pains with the new shop opening up. (1/28/19) Fast forward one year - I had placed an order for 7 dozen doughnuts (2 weeks in advance) delivered by 7:30am. I called at 7am to confirm they were on their way, only to find out the order was never processed in the kitchen and ZERO doughnuts were made. These doughnuts were for my company's executives so I starting stressing. The person over the phone was remorseful and willing to make the delivery, but it would have taken over 2 - 3 hours for them to arrive. Way too late at this point. So instead I asked for a refund and went to the corner doughnut shop down the street. They asked me to consider ordering with them in the future, but sadly that won't be happening. As much as I love the product, I can't rely on them to follow through with a delivery, even if I pay them 2 weeks in advance. read more

I like the interior, the staff here is friendly, and the vibes are super cool, but the doughnuts have been going downhill for some time now. I keep going back thinking maybe the last batch was a dud, but everytime it seems the same. I pay alot for a mediocre, dry doughnut that just doesn't seem worth it. Maybe I am stuck on stupid on this one, but I can't give this place 4 or 5 stars. I just can't justify the price to get to those last couple stars. I have noshed on the wheat free fritters before off the food truck and it is delicious. Crunchy on the outside with the glaze and nicely textured doughnut on the inside with splashes of blueberry to brighten the fritter. Overall, as delicious as these are, they are a bit dense. There's no way I could finish one alone. It would sit like a brick for the day in my stomach. I recently decided to grab a box of doughnuts for an event I had the next morning. Maybe sitting overnight didn't fare well for these tasty treats but they were all so dense the next morning. I ordered 8 doughnuts at the not so bargain price of $28. I almost choked on my own spit when I saw the total - who spends almost $30 on doughnuts and doesn't even get a dozen?! Me I guess. I picked out a couple of the fritters, zebra, strawberry glaze, cinnamon twist, a couple sprinkles round doughnuts, and the croissant doughnut. All were good, but heavy even for a doughnut. So, got a flat tire today down by Ace Hardware... bad day right? Nope. Walked passed this place on my way to a tire repair shop and decided to try them out. The brainchild of a long time dough master who had a pizza dough company, this doughnut truck has a companion shop in San Rafael I visited. Just as exciting as the freshly made array of donuts is the locally roasted coffee from Weaver's which is run by Peet's Coffee's 30+ year master roaster. Weaver's is not as well known as some Bay Area roasters but it is in top 3 ALL TIME favorite coffees and won a Major Award from the Today Show in a taste test of 100 coffees. The doughnut guy and Weaver's collaborated on matching flavor profiles ... I'm guessing not typical of most Chinese restaurant / donut shops. Came in one morning right when they opened up - excited after hearing something about vegan donuts from here...to find they only have one vegan donut. And on this morning, it was the last one out...I was so sad seeing all the donuts displayed so nicely and then seeing the words vegan on an empty platter. They said they'd be out in 20 minutes and they usually make them with sweet potato flour but they were out so it was regular potato (?) and so I waited. I live close by so I love coming in on a Saturday or Sunday, late morning. Love the atmosphere and interior, a beautiful and modern setting. Lots of seating but it can get packed with families on weekends. It is first come, first serve so if you want a specific donut or a good selection to choose from, you'll need to come in early or call ahead and have it reserved. My favorite are the chocolate crodough (which always sell out early) and the old-fashioned ones. Lines can get pretty long, especially around 10am-12 on weekends. Coffee is good, especially the mocha, but a little expensive. Actually the doughnuts are pretty pricey too but you're getting a gourmet-made doughnut so it's worth it. I am a doughnut savant. I take doughnuts verrrrry seriously. They fuel my workouts, they bring me joy. Johnny Doughnuts brought me misery. It was a rainy Sunday but that wasn't going to keep me from the Doughnut Disco being held at SOMA streat food park. I arrived with my friend with the sole purpose of trying Johnny Doughnuts. I'm hyped him up saying things like "I heard these were bomb af" and "I saw on the gram they are huuuuuge" My friend and I were so hyphy by the time we showed up we didn't care Johnny Doughnuts had the longest line at the food truck park (at that moment). "Confirmation"- I thought this to myself that these $3+ doughnuts were going to be worth it and delicious. Why else would people be lining up like this in the rain? I ordered the strawberry glaze and my friend got an original glaze. "These are enormous" my friend gasped. Indeed Johnny Doughnuts are very large, but that is the only thing impressive about them. My friend took a huge bite. "WTF," my friend mumbled, "these are cooooold!" Yes they were beyond cold. Actually I have never even had a stale doughnut from Safeway that was this cold. When were these even made? To my dismay, not only was the doughnut cold, the consistency was slightly lighter than a cake doughnut. Upon chewing, the flavor of stale oil filled my mouth. Cakey, oily cold dough with no flavor but oil. "This is disgusting," I exclaimed in horror- Never have I had such an awful doughnut in my life. Not only was it cold, oily and an odd texture- the glaze was also coming entirely off on the wax paper provided. So the strawberry glaze ended up mostly on the paper and not in my mouth. Blue Star doughnuts in Portland and Los Angeles suffer from this exact problem. There is no excuse to create a glaze that just falls off like that. Consideration should be made on how someone is consuming the food, especially coming from a food truck. The previously mentioned Safeway provides a better texture, consistency and flavor (depending on the Safeway you go to and the time of day.) Listen to me- spare yourself from this BS. I don't even know how this place is operating under the doughnut flag. This is doughnut blasphemy. This is a doughnut disaster! We ended up throwing them into the streets for the pigeons. Listen to me, if you want a good doughnut in SF then go to Mr. Holmes, Dynamo, or Twisted. They're like the size of a bagel and an half. Made with potato mixed into their flour. We bought four as we were visiting friends in San Rafael. We got the classic glazed, classic chocolate, old fashion and the salted caramel old fashion. $10.25 total. Yummy yummy yum. We cut the classics into bite size pieces. The four of us couldn't even finish the two donuts. I can't describe the texture but they're heavier than your typical glazed donuts. Definitely pair with a stiff cup of coffee. Then last night hubby and I cut the old fashion donuts into bite size pieces and had for dessert. We could only eat a couple pieces each. And this morning with coffee we still were only able to just eat a couple pieces. The old fashion donuts are dense and reminds me of pound cake texture. About two years or so ago, I was walking downtown over towards the West End, when I saw a sign in front of a tiny storefront. There's a doughnut shop here? I peered in to the tiny, empty store. The employees were standing around and began beckoning to me to come in. I was either not hungry or had no money on me or both. I didn't go in and made a mental note to check out the new doughnut store one day. If only I had walked into Johnny's Doughnuts in its earliest days, before it was listed in several places as one of the top doughnut shops in the country, before it expanded into the space next door, before the long lines. Then I could have said that I liked Johnny's Doughnuts before they were a thing. But we must all live with our regrets. Anyway, so I finally actually walked in, now that everyone and their mother in Marin has been there. It's a great space and the doughnuts are all very appealing looking. I had a crodough, which was heavy and satisfying--but, I must quibble, did not, as Johnny's claims, have custard in every layer. I chose a chocolate crodough, so you could really see where the filling was and there were only sparse little globs of chocolate spread throughout. The traditional raised doughnut was light and tasty. Yes, the doughnuts are pricey in comparison to other doughnuts, but that's because doughnuts in general are underpriced when you compare them to other pastries. Cute donut shop that gets bonus points for being aesthetically pleasing. I got a blueberry donut and immediately noticed it was probably the fluffiest donuts I've ever had. The blueberry glaze was also pretty good and wasn't as dry as other ones I've had in the past. Typically I can easily finish a donut in one sitting, but I noticed theirs was definitely more filling. I also ordered a coffee and noticed that they had almond milk out, which was a nice plus since some places charge extra for it. There's also a lot of seating and free WiFi, making it a great place for someone who wants to grab breakfast but also get some work done. That said, if you're expecting those traditional donuts where you can pay less than $15 for a dozen, this is not the place for you. read more
