I'd been wanting to check out Johnny Doughnuts forever, so decided to stop by on the way up to Sonoma. Sadly, they were already out of their CroDoughs by the time I thought to try and call in an order (9am on a Saturday), so I'm not sure we would have been able to reserve one in any case. It didn't seem like they ran out of anything else by the time I arrived (10am), but it was busy inside and the line started getting long. It would be nice if they had the donuts clearly labeled, since I had to keep asking which donut was which for the flavors I couldn't figure out- this would also speed up the ordering process since everyone would keep asking about the different flavors. I love donuts, especially old fashioned cake ones, so I went out of my way to stop here on a recent trip to the Bay Area. The donuts had a weird consistency! They were... hard. Like bagels? I was expecting them to be buttery, rich, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. But this had the texture of pumpernickel bread. And didn't taste much different either. I picked up 6 doughnuts the other day to take home before the Big Game. Even at 12:30 PM on a Sunday, there was a short line, about 3 customers in front of me. This gave me some time to see what was available. There were also several people eating at some benches in the dining area, a few of them on laptops (I didn't check for wifi, but I wasn't here for long). When it was my turn (less than a 5 minute wait), I chose 2 Crodoughs (one chocolate, one raspberry), 2 Lime Mascarpone Bismarks, one Blueberry and one Sprinkled Doughnut. Each pastry was pretty big, so 6 was enough for my small party. Arriving home, I dove into each baked delight (sharing them with my friends, of course!). The Crodoughs (combination croissant and doughnut) were nice, but since there weren't super fresh, they weren't as flaky as they could have been. (Note to self, eat those onsite.) The blueberry was my favorite, followed by the Bismarks (the lime filling was very tart!). Each of the pastries was larger than a standard doughnut, so you don't need to eat as many as you would normally do. They are more expensive, but worth it! read more

To die for! My fiancé and I stopped in on our way to San Francisco one day. They were VERY busy and we didn't want to hold up the line so we picked a couple doughnuts that sounded yummy. They were both so delicious! Kelsey helped us out and she was so cheerful and relaxed despite how busy it was. I don't think I could handle a crowd like that as well as she did. We came back a few weeks later when it wasn't so busy to try their cronuts (my first cronut ever). It was so good! Kelsey helped us again. She asked us how our day was and if we wanted anything to drink. Excellent customer service! I'm assuming it's only this location that's managed poorly but it's the closest to where we live. At the moment they're only open for curb side pickup but after calling three times and not getting anyone on the phone, my son drove down(30min round trip) and waiting in a short line outside to find out they're sold out. This is the second time we haven't been able to get someone on the line before going down to be told they're sold out. We've also reached someone and been told they have what we're looking for, driven down and been told they sold out hours ago. We're talking about donuts, I'm thinking it shouldn't be this difficult to communicate with your customers. Not that they care as they have the demand but I'm over this place. I brought home a dozen to share with the fam. I had a cronut- its been 4 hours and my blood sugar level still has not stabilized. I've always felt that there was a disconnect between the concept and the reality of the cronut- but Johnny does them right. The jelly doughnuts were awesome- unlike mere mortal doughnuts that are filled with red food dye #2, and a mere suggestion of fruit in a corn syrup base, Johnny doughnut uses real fruit preserves. The donuts: glazed & cinnamon donut holes... Double the size of a normal one (ie: Dunkin Donuts). More of a bready dough compared to your average donut...fluffy and airy, yet with more of a bite. Definitely a different texture, which I personally like. If you like a like airy donuts that are easily compressed, this may not be 5 stars for you, but regardless of what donut type you prefer, if you have taste buds, you'll like these. Ginormous donuts, very filling and very rich. First time we went we ordered three and that was a rookie mistake. One donut apiece is more than enough. Actually, when we'd go, usually ordered two donuts and usually I'd end up having a little bit less than than the full amount and the bf would finish the rest of mine. They sell out fast on the popular flavors, so you have to get up early to get the goods. Or just be me and take whatever is left. There's cake and yeast, and yeast is the winner for me (soft instead of overly dense). They even have gluten free and it was not half bad. Some of the donuts are vanilla-filled and that's splendid. The store was renovated a few months ago and now boasts a lot of added space. It's very open with sufficient wooden tables and benches to have a kids' birthday party at. No espresso drinks available as of yet, but there's drip. Alright. Here comes the sacrilegious part of my review. At the the end of the day, they're just donuts. Give me a break guys. I wasn't born in the US so if we were talking bizcochos I'd be like I WANT TO EAT HERE EVERY DAY and be dipping them in my morning coffee. But to me a donut is still like an overly fried sweet piece of bread so ...ya know. I recently read an article listing the top donut places in the nation and I was thrilled to see that the Bay Area had two of those places! I've tried Dynamo in SF before, so this place was on my "must eat" list. We came in on a Saturday morning and it was busy, as expected. They had such a great selection of donuts (glazed, cake, filled, crodo, etc) that it was hard to make a decision. In the end, however, we ended up with a crodo and a raised blueberry glazed. The crodo was awesome. They take the cronut (croissant/donut) and take it to a new level with cream inside! The blueberry was very tasty as well. It had a thick layer of the sweet glaze, which was good since it was so big. Both donuts were nice and fluffy, didn't have an oily aftertaste, and weren't overly expensive for quality, high end donuts. My personal recommendations are Maple Old fashioned, and the maple bar. Beyond comparison to any other doughnut shop. They are so tasty, putting your taste buds to the test, and every bite is better than the next. The Old fashion kind have lots of extra spices, ginger, cinnamon, they are dense, but light. The Old fashioned are my favorite. They are also humongous in size, at least double or triple the size of a regular doughnut from typical places. You used to be so good. From the day you were a little shop, to the cool space you are now we always loved Johnny Doughnuts. It fostered a sense of community with everyone commenting and enjoying the doughnuts. Unfortunately, they new system has made it so we do not want to come. Before you were able to choose from a variety of doughnuts that were well made and would satisfy the adults and the kids. Now you get only a few choices that are immediately from the oven. Although this sounds like a good idea, the toppings haven't had time to set and are frankly a mess and not as good. Daughter lives in Outer Sunset and bikes here regularly. We visited her last week, and she couldn't wait to take us here. Unfortunately, since hubby and I don't bike, she had to drive us. This place is very popular with bicyclists, and there was a group of cyclists in line when we arrived. We had called ahead and "reserved" our donuts; they were absolutely fantastic! I went yesterday and got a donut for the first time in ages and it was fantastic. Just like they used to be. But, I don't know - this is between a two and a three. Here's the bottom line. I love the fact that they have a GF donut. I hate the fact that it costs $3.50. As a woman who refused to pay more than 75 cents for a candy bar and more than 50 cents for a donut that is hard swallow paying 7 times that amount for only one. I remember getting a dozen donuts for less than $5. And now I'm looking at paying $7 for two?!? However, the first time they were selling the donuts they were amazing. I would buy 3-4 at a time because they did what most GF donut places don't. They fry these bad boys and you get the crispy outer texture and the cakey inner texture going on at the same time. But my problem is two-fold. Everyone else baked theirs, so instead of a donut, I had a donut shaped cupcake. And if I arrived an hour - an hour and a half into the event, the donuts were gone. I spent a lot of time in long lines where either I, or the person in front of me, bought the last GF donut. Argh!!! But, a couple of problems arose 1) The freshness. The first two donuts tasted fantastic (that night and the next morning) but after that they were just plain gross, unless zapped in the microwave and then they had to be eaten rather quickly. So I would just buy two donuts. After a few weeks I noticed that by day two, they had the same texture as the 3 and 4 day old donuts? Do you follow? Then I would buy a donut and have to zap it in the microwave the next day to get that fresh taste. So I stopped. I assumed that they were selling donuts past their expiry date, because they had to ramp up production. So they just made a lot more and sold them a day or two later. I don't know about the regular donuts, but these donuts showed their age after the second day. 2) There has been one flavor and one flavor only. Blueberry, which replaced the berry (blueberry plus strawberry). It's my wet dream to go and find another flavor, all together. They have so many other flavors and styles, and I wish that I had a chance to join in that bounty. Yesterday's donut was good, but I don't know if the next donut will be as good. Unlike the old days when I'd make a special trip to OTG when they were present or smile or automatically run to the line for my donuts, I feel differently. I tried both the strawberry glazed and a salted chocolate caramel donut and not only were htey delicious but they held up for a few days (since I didn't eat both in one sitting). 5 stars for sure but there were a few misses for me. Cronut - absolutely divine. Amazing texture. Amazing lightness. The cream inside was not too sweet and perfect. Not too big. I could eat 10 of these. Caramel apple fritter - I only had about 1/8 of the fritter but my daughter complained, "I can't taste the caramel" whereas the bite I had didn't have any apple. The fritter appeared to be mostly dough. Twist - good but I personally prefer a dough less dense, less chewy and even more light and fluffy. It was glazed with chocolate drizzle and I found it to be very sweet. Good but I am picky about my donuts. Blueberry - good but again, a tad sweet for my taste and I also like the raised dough lighter and less chewy. The frosting on top had great flavor. Coffee - disappointed. I way prefer Peet's but they do have almond milk and stevia on the condiment counter so yay for that! I would definitely go back to try some other donuts.
