I wouldn't say the food was very good a little salty and nothing special except for Queso Taters...totally addictive and yummy! I had a vegetable plate and really didn't like any of them. My husband had the fried pork chops and he said they were decent. Service was not horrible, but I would call it...benign neglect. Brought us our food but no follow up or refills. Recently took a chance and stopped by this little cafe on my way back to Dallas from College Station. So glad I did! What a hidden gem this was. My friend and I wanted to try the chicken fried chicken and decided to share the entree. We order the "large" portion since we were sharing. When the meal was placed in front of us, we realized we could have shared the "small" portion. We each had our own good size chicken fried chicken. It was hand battered and the crust was amazing. The cream gravy was very tasty too. We chose mashed potatoes and the Mac and cheese. Both sides were delicious as well. The Only disappointment were the rolls, if they had been homemade rather than store bought I would have given this place 5 stars. We wanted to try the peach cobbler for dessert, but we were so full after eating every bite of our delicious meal! I will definitely come back here next time I am in the area! read more

The burgers are the bomb! The onion rings could have used a little more seasoning but all were generously portioned. Beware the sampler appetizer.....It is tasty and huge, so don't order it unless you have 3-4 people in your party. Food was great but service was terrible the waitress that took our order messed it up drinks were wrong. Then next server brought our food it was all jumbled between the four of us we ask for more rolls and cornbread it never came the last waitress asked if we wanted to go cups and never got a refill for our drinks. the table next to us asked 3 times for cranberry sauce for their turkey and dressing not sure if they ever got it. I ate lunch here today & I was seated promptly even though they were pretty busy, my order was also promptly taken & the food was likewise prepared promptly. I ordered a ribeye w/ grilled shrimp. The steak was prepared well & was the advertised 16oz I would think by looking at it, the shrimp were a little on the small side, cold & overcooked & the sides were in all likelihood prefrozen microwave fare but it was good. We have been to this cafe a couple of times. Hoping that it would redeem itself. Food is always good. The service is the worst. On top of that their employees were sitting in a booth being rude and loud enough for everyone in the place to hear them. We were sitting two booths away from them. We had to make an effort to talk over them. To have our own conversation. If the management can get the staff to actually take care of the customers, and in turn the staff makes an effort to perform some customer service. This cafe could be a great place to eat. read more

If you're looking for excellent comfort food options, and you happen to be in the Hearne, TX area, look no further. Johnny Reb's has everything from meatloaf to chicken fried steak, burgers, and fried seafood. Don't come here for heart-healthy fare, although I guess you could get a salad, but you'd miss out on what's best here. The restaurant itself is pretty cool, with lots of Civil War memorabilia on the walls. The restaurant has an interesting mix of locals and visitors to the College Station area. I will go so far to say that Johnny Reb's may have the best home cookin' in TX. Get a t-shirt while you're there. read more

An update. Stopped in, as we always do, while passing through Hearne this past weekend. The fried mushrooms and onion rings were excellent as always. Still the very best fried mushrooms (and onion rings and zucchini) you will find. Other items were good, too, which ranged from a chicken salad sandwich to blackened chicken to chicken and rice soup. The soup was especially good, with lots of chicken and flavor. The service was friendly and attentive. One negative - since our last visit, the upholstery has been removed from the booths. There is no padding. You sit directly on the wood and lean against a wood back, which gets uncomfortable pretty quickly. When we asked what happened to the padding, we were told that the owner thought the upholstery didn't look very good and had it removed. We recommend sitting at a table instead of a booth, and hope the owners will reconsider the hard booth seats. Knocked off one star due to the uncomfortable booth seating. The food and service, though, remain consistently good and we can't recommend the fried mushrooms enough! read more

We have been there twice, the food is really good, but both times the service was so very bad! It takes a long time to get waited on and then when you finally get your food everyone over looks you and doesn't never come back to the table. If you need anything you have to find someone to ask. Chose this place while driving through as we had recognized the name from a Texas Monthly review- I wished I had remembered it was from 2008. Started ok with decent rolls and cornbread. Chicken fried steak was ok, not much if any seasoning; mashed potatoes were very "watery"( as in water around the edges of the bowl) but decent. I'm a southern girl and I like banana pudding. If a southern restaurant is brave enough to put it on the menu then they should be prepared for the ripping review when it's below par. This was the absolute worst I have ever tasted. I would drive all the way from Houston to Hearne just to eat their chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken or fried catfish. Dixie cafe cafe is the epitome of fine southern dining. Sweet tea that makes you feel like you are sitting in a rocking chair on the porch of a plantation house. Fried entrees that make you forget about calories and lunge into the depths of pure crispy pleasure. There batter is other worldly! A good example is there chicken fried steak. Normally when I get this at a restaurant I am disappointing with tasteless tough beef with breading that completely falls off before I eat it. The one that Dixie serves is laden with salt and pepper before it is fried and the crusty breading stays stuck to the meat so that every bite has a nice crust. Their mash potatoes are another standout. They leave a few of the skins in their perfectly salted mash that brings a nice rustic touch to the side. It's a little sad of sad they yanked the flag when the remodeled a few years back caving into political correctness, but I guess there aren't too many German restaurants in Berlin that rock a big swazi in the front either. I don't usually drink iced tea but I made an exception because I read the sweet tea was pretty good. It was.The staff was very friendly and helpful and came by the table several times. The waitress was friendly and efficient. There was nothing wrong with the appetizer we ordered. We had a situation that could have easily been handled, but the owner/(manager?) was rude, had quite the attitude and left our table without solving our issue. He never apologized or spoke to us as we left. We have eaten at the Dixie Cafe for years, but never again. He did offer to comp our appetizer, but no thanks. We'll pay our way. We live in College Station, TX. and drive to Hearne at least once a week to eat lunch there. The food is always good, and I end up taking home about half of mine each time. There is so much food and that's on the lunch menu. We are planning to go down one evening to eat as well. Stopped here for breakfast on our way through Hearne. What a nice surprise. If you watch the food channel they tell you that a egg should be fried on medium heat to keep it from crisping up. Thank goodness they do not watch the channel. It was fried crispy and over easy just the way I like them. The hashbrowns were so good I ate them all which I normally do not do. My meal was topped off with a thick slice of ham and the best sweet tea I have had in awhile. My husband had the breakfast special and loved everything except the grits.
