I am here on business and this place is really close to my hotel. I saw this place and decided to go. I got the chicken tortilla salad and the sangria margarita. Both were amazing. The portion sizes are very good and prices are perfect. They even have an ice cream machine by the door so as you leave you can get a dessert. The wait staff is nice and very helpful. Went here last night on someone's recommendation. I had the Ponderosa Enchiladas, chicken fajita, cheese, with rice and beans on the side. The portion was huge and the price was reasonable. It was very Tex-Mex, but satisfied my craving. My server was great. I can't remember his name. He was very helpful, and even let me know that my food might take a bit longer than usual because of a large party they were hosting, but I think the wait time wasn't unreasonable. The only reason I took away a couple of stars was because the hostess (I guess that's what they're called) at the front wasn't very inviting. I'm new to the area, so I've been trying out different places alone, since I don't know anyone in the area. Anyway, as soon as I walked in, she turned her back to me. I suppose I can give her the benefit of the doubt that she assumed I would be waiting for someone else, but still, not cool. Her attitude was very cold and unfriendly. As I was leaving, she didn't say "goodbye, have a nice evening" or anything, even though she said that to the people who had left just before I did. I really enjoy their food and sitting at the bar to watch games. But I had a bad experience this past Sunday. As I only get 30 minute lunch ... I asked my friend to order my food and drink and I would be there so that way I am not waisting time. But the waitress/bartender placed my order to go.. I was upset! I just want to say that I love this place! I adore their chicken enchiladas with the Chile con queso and chips with salsa. I usually take my orders to-go which is what I did this past time. I have found 2 count them 2 small pubic-esque type hairs in the salsa!!!!!!!! That's incredibly disgusting and I am no longer dining here. I'm not looking for a refund or remedy. So if your in the mood for a "self serve" atmosphere then this your place to go! Friends and myself got there at 2 on a Friday and the order was taken at 2:32pm. Then the drinks returned 10 minutes later and the food came shortly after. By shortly, 20minutes later is what I mean. The best thing about this place is the green salsa that comes free with the complementary chips and the fresh guacamole they make in front of you. Then again, we are in the 20th century and I feel as if people need a bit more to be WOWed. Anywho, good luck and bring your patience if your looking to eat here. Food is on par (2stars) with all other chain Mexican restaurants, but their salsa is served hot (temperature). Love hot salsa! I've ordered just about everything off of the menu, and it always comes out a little different each time. That's not a bad thing, as it let's me know they're actually cooking back there and not just unzipping a bag, heating stuff up, slapping it in a tortilla, and smothering it with some 3 week old cheese sauce. With that said, their drinks are AMAZING. (2stars). Right amount of kick, perfect amount of tang, and always cold. One of my favorite places for a happy hour margarita. I am a weekly customer at JT Pasadena for many years, today when I went to get my pick up several items were missing but yet on the charge ticket. This is the first time since the opened this location this has happened. I called to ask if I could get them on another day and the manager said, "no way! Every time we dine here, the dishes are excellent. They make one of the best Taco Salads we have ever eaten. We love the salsa here as well. It's always fresh, and has a mix of different peppers that are delicious. My Wife loves the Stuffed Avocado dinner, and I love the Cozumel Special, which is an assortment of shrimp specialties. Whatever you choose here, you will not be disappointed. I do wish the restaurant were not quite so dark inside; that's my only suggestion. They've added extra hanging lights lately, which helps a little. read more

What a breath of fresh Mexican food! We decided to try this place for the first time. And man are we glad we did! The waitress was helpful, sweet and answered out questions. She recommended the El Dorado so I got it and I was not disappointed it was a burst of flavor and the chicken was cooked to perfection! My boyfriend ordered the stuffed avocado and that was delusions as well. He ordered the beef and got the chicken, minor mix up but he said the chicken was really good so he allowed the mistake and gobbled it up. This is definitely a place I would recommend, and will visit again the next time we have a hankering for tex next food! read more

Another bad experience @ Johnny Tamale's, this place has issues. I have had numerous bad experiences but come back hoping they rally...sometimes they do but the past 2-3 times we have eaten here things have been bad so I won't be going back. We literally got our queso dip with no chips and by the time they brought chips (after numerous requests) the dip was cold and congealed...not appetizing at all. The wait staff has attitude and the last straw is that the so called bartender doesn't know how to make a skinny margarita, and they call themselves. TexMex Cantina...I don't think so! read more

The food was decent. I've been to this location many times but I've never ordered to-go. However, last night, we did order to-go. The customer service was good. We didn't wait long to get our food and the ladies who took our order and money were very friendly. That said, our order was almost completely wrong. Luckily, we were too hungry to care too much and it was just the kind of meat that was messed up. But I would be careful about ordering to-go from here. Don't order unless you are ok with eating their mess-ups or taking the food back. We ordered the queso with ground beef and there wasn't any in it so we wasted $1.69. It was annoying. Bottom line: their dine in service has never gotten our order wrong and I would definitely recommend that rather than getting your order wrong on to-go. I recently moved to Pasadena and was happy to know Johnny tamales was right down the street, I'd never been because I'm very picky about Mexican food and margaritas. Wow is all I have to say, i under estimated them and I only order fajitas everytime I go to a Mexican restaurant but their "Johnny Rita straight up" is the best I've ha. I always order them on the rocks and I've had them at plenty of other places but this place is by far my favorite and the best in my opinion. I wish I could give 1.5 stars. The extra half of a star is because I didn't get sick. The one star is because it was food. I picked up food, and was there MAYBE 10 minutes after I ordered. Took eight and a half minutes for someone to take my to-go order. Queso with chorizo was just one solid hunk of hot cheese, and a bunch of very greasy chorizo. To explain it better, just imagine a luke warm mozorella stick. When you bite into it, the cheese comes out in one big hunk. So, I decided to cut it with a knife, and put some on a tortilla. It dripped grease all over my pants. Yeah, that was my appetizer. Since tamale is in the name, I figured the tamale dish would be good. It had zero flavor. By zero, I mean....the meat tasted like air. I didn't even finish it, because I got so annoyed with the lack of flavor (and eating is one of my favorite things in life).
