I had an amazing visit here with family on opening weekend of their Christmas decor. Johnny's goes all out for Christmas - amazingly festive both inside and outside the bar in their outdoor patio. They even had disco lights in the bathroom! We were able to get a reservation for the patio as the inside was completely booked up. When we arrived we were amazed at the gorgeous lights and festivity! The opening weekend was without heaters but fortunately it wasn't too cold. The servers mentioned that they were bringing in heaters in a few days. We enjoyed perusing their holiday themed menu and settled on our orders. I decided on the Carol Singer and J opted for the Coconut hot chocolate. I was happy to try these warmer drinks on a nippy day and they were both delicious! I loved the spiced warm cider taste of rage Carol Singer, though the standout of the night was the Coconut hot chocolate. The whipped cream was perfect for giving the hot chocolate Christmas feel while still getting a kick from the rum and amaretto mix. Our servers were attentive and very accommodating. They did inform us of another party coming in to the same table 2 hours after our reservation which was very reasonable and we appreciated the heads up. I've also had the chance to stop by outside the Christmas season and was blown away by the tasty drinks and reasonable prices. Not sure how I haven't put a review for Johnny's before now but has to be one the most hidden gem bars in all of Houston. One of my go to spots for a quiet evening alone or a pre-date night drink or after dinner party! Johnnys has it all. Amazing menu, great happy hour (check out the weeknight specials). Great service, bartenders are quick and attentive and my favorite consistent. I've probably gotten 100 old fashions from Johnnys over the years and they almost always taste the same. If you love Christmas, don't forget to make a reservation to their amazing holiday hours where they deck out the entire bar in Christmas lights and decor it's a site to behold and a great time. There is a parking lot just down the street that's safe and as secure as it can be in Houston (multiple cameras and well lit). On a recommendation 4 of us drove up from Galveston to have a drink. We walked in at 3:55pm, didn't realize they opened at 4:00pm. Their doors were open and the music was on. We started looking at the menu and someone rudely told us that they were having a business meeting and asked if we could wait outside. My mind was blown. I waited till the last weekend of the year, but I finally got to cross Johnny's Gold Brick off my list of places to visit. I've had them bookmarked for awhile, but after recently seeing them on a TV show, my friends and I sped up the process to visit. We were also on a hunt to visit a few Christmas pop ups and Johnny's is known for theirs. Because of the popularity of their pop up, reservations were required. Located in the Heights, parking wasn't as challenging as I expected. It shares a lot with a couple of other businesses in the back and there is street parking as well. We were one of the first groups to arrive for the day and were seated right away. The bar itself is pretty small inside, but for this pop up, they had a tent erected out front, completely decked out just like inside. The holiday décor was quite impressive and very festive. Christmas had just passed, but it got me right back into the Christmas spirit. Customer service was excellent. Ollie was our guy and he took really good care of us and gave us great recommendations. Pop up aside, Johnny's is a local favorite that's been around for awhile. One of the things that they are known for is their 9.99 all day/everyday cocktail menu. It's listed on the wall and has 12 classic cocktails that will please most people in my opinion. The day we came, they were pushing their Miracle at Johnny's menu which had a bunch of holiday drinks and snacks. Nothing spoke to me so I went with a classic old fashioned which is one of my go to drinks. I judge places on if they can this old classic. I liked that even ordering off the regular menu, everything came out in festive glasses. My drink was good. The only thing I did not care for was that they used iced cubes. I followed that up with a Cuba Libre. It was my first time trying that drink and it too was tasty and quite refreshing. I heard good things about their burger so I ordered their holiday smash burger. It was a smash burger topped with green chilies. It was ok. My friend got their everyday smash burger and it was just ok to her as well. It was served with chips. I like my burgers with fries but considering it's coming off a truck, I can see why they go this route to avoid long wait times. Overall, a good time was had by all and the Christmas pop up was a big hit. I would totally come back here on a regular night as well! read more

I've been coming to this bar for a while, but the last two visits have been unbelievably disappointing. I came in today hoping it was just a fluke before, it wasn't. My friends and I sat down in a booth and were immediately yelled at from across the room to come to the bar for menus and to order there. No greeting. No "hey guys." Just shouting. Fine. We walked up, ordered, grabbed the menus, and sat back down assuming they'd at least bring the drinks out. Nope. We were yelled at again to come back to the bar to get our drinks and then not even five minutes later, I watched them deliver drinks directly to the booth next to us. So apparently table service exists... just not for everyone? To top it off, I walked in finishing a mini Coke I had while walking over. Instead of a polite "hey, we don't allow outside drinks," it felt accusatory and unnecessary. I immediately apologized and let them threw it out -- no argument, no attitude. Yet the person who I believe is the manager continued to glare at me from behind the bar for the rest of the time we were there. It was uncomfortable and completely uncalled for. It's frustrating because I actually liked this place. But when customers feel singled out, talked to from across the room, and treated like an annoyance instead of paying guests, that's a problem. Eclectic crowd - It's the type of place you know you'll always enjoy but at peak times it may be too crowded if you are seeking the true dive bar ambiance. Their cocktail menu is seasonal so your favorite may not always be on the menu, but I can assure you the bartenders will still help you find something you like. I came for the miracle pop up during the holidays. I loved how decked out the bar was with trees, lights and festive decor. It really made you feel like you walked into a winter wonderland. I met a friend there and did not have a reservation. The bar top had a few open seats. Usually a bar is first come first serve but the hostess controlled the seating for the entire bar. It was a lot of back and forth conversation between the staff and we waited about 15 minutes to sit down in those empty seats. We just stood there watching them. It should be an easy task to sit people down in open seats. They have a full bar and the holiday menu drinks that are served in Christmas cups. I ordered the Yippee Kay Yay drink. It has a tropical twist. We talked for a while and started to get a little hungry. The snack menu is not as big as I thought. Last year I went to the other pop up at Winnie's and thought the menu there has better food options. I did not want pork, so the tamales and hot dog option was out. I settled for trying the cream cheese and pepper jelly. I thought it would have came mixed as a dip, but it came out as a block of cream cheese with some jelly on top. It was a tasty snack though. Each cocktail was its own unique EXPERIENCE!! The wait for the drinks was about 5-10 mins but that was because the presentation of the drinks was TOP NOTCH!! Do take note that there is a 90 minute TIME LIMIT at your table. They will really remind you 5-15 minutes that your table limit is approaching. (How do I know? Because we tested the time limit and our waitress came by like a ghost on the dot lol) THE DRINKS: 10/10 Marshmallows & Unicorns - Expect sweetness in every sip! The frothy texture reminded me of slowly sipping a cup of fluffy marshmallows... if you can sip liquid marshmallow. 10/10 Nice Shot - This comes in a CUTE miniature Santa mug!!!! It's rye whiskey and gingerbread. Afterward, I felt a tad bit of regret but mixed with happiness when the burning sensation of rye whiskey reminded me of what a fantastic day to be ALIVE. The best Christmas bar for a fun night out. I went with some friends to celebrate the end of the year before we all went home for the holidays and Johnny's Gold Brick was such a fun atmosphere! We snagged a last minute reservation for the patio which was beautiful decorated. The staff was kind enough to move us inside when another party failed to show up. The entire room was head to floor covered in Christmas decor and all the drinks had a fun twist! I ordered the Jolly Koala and a round of Nice Shots for the table! Both I'd order again! We went to Miracle at Johnny's - the annual Holiday pop up where they transform the bar into a fully decorated and theme dense night out. The holiday decorations are strung heavily along the ceiling, tables, even chairs are wrapped. (and in case you wondered / yep, they did the restroom too) Then the drinks - they have a holiday themed cocktail menu with seasonal twists to the classics. When it's not raining, the outside patio is great and they have a good truck provided tacos and tex mex. (the night we went was raining, so no food options) The drinks - we tried the Christmapolitan, Snowball old fashioned, Jingle Balls Nog and had a "Nice" shot. The favorite was the Nog. The Nice shot tasted a bit like cough medicine with a peppermint ending... not a fan. The Christmapolitan was fruity and sweet. The Snowball old fashioned was a spicy gingerbread taste, good if you'd like ginger But our fave, the Jingle ball nog was creamy with nutmeg and vanilla, not too thick, we just really liked that one. Tip - make a reservation and be on time. You get your table for 90 minutes. Servers are GREAT and dressed in holiday fun outfits. They'll let your know when times getting close. My fiancée and I visited during the Christmas experience and it was such an amazing experience! The covered area outside has a decorations such as a sled (which I'm sure Johnny borrowed from Santa), present bows along the walls, etc. but the real magic is inside the bar. If you check my video you can see the dozens of presents and Christmas decor found all over the walls and ceiling. It's as if a "Christmas tornado" whirled through the bar! We sat at the bar and got recommendations from one of the bartenders for drinks. We ordered the Christmas Cricket and Grandma Got Run Over by a T-Rex (which came in a T-Rex mug!!) and both were delicious. I appreciate that you can really taste the pandan in the CC. We'll definitely be visiting more frequently for the delicious drinks and great vibes! read more
