If you want quality pizza, Johnny's is an excellent choice. We ordered a large mushroom to share between two people and we could have finished the entire pie if eating for flavor. I never had pizza where the sauce was on top of the cheese but as a person who loves the sauce, I enjoyed it. The slices themselves are ultra thin but crispy enough to have substance and hold the toppings. I consider myself a rainbow cake aficionado - from Fortunatos to Veniero's, I'll never turn down a piece of these hybrid cake-cookies. When I saw that Johnny's Pizzeria was serving not just rainbow cookies but rainbow cakes, I knew a trip to Mt. Vernon was in order. While the cake was as decadent as expected, more importantly we discovered one of the pre-eminent thin crust pizzas in the city. The cake is put in the oven for no more than 1.5 minutes and might best be characterised as a cracker. The sauce and cheese are simple but leave nothing to be desired. Johnny's Pizza style is similar to John's of Bleecker Street - and arguably an improvement - but its peculiar location in a more challenged section of Mt. Some of the best pizza I've had in decades! I'm from Boston (20 years) but have been living in Oakland for 30 years and I keep trying to explain to Californians what REALLY good pizza is. This. Is. IT. Nice and thin. Crispy bottom, chewy on top. I got anchovies and mushrooms. They weren't just slapped on top. It was almost like they incorporated it into the sauce or something, with the perfect ratio. They top the dough almost all the way to the edge so you're gonna wanna eat that crust too. Our party of four went last night, and for the first time, we were Greatly Disappointed . The decor hasn't changed in at least 40 years. Had to park 5 blocks away on the Thursday night! We couldn't put our finger on what changed but the Cheese Pie was tasteless. Was it the mozzarella? The sauce? Both? We had two different soups - Pasta w/Lentils and Pasta Fagioli. The soups must have been heating on the stove all day. The pasta in both was mush. The soups were bland. We tried to pump up the flavor of the pizza and the soups with the grated cheese on the table - ugh! The plastic-like cheese stuck to the soup spoon. Service was just OK. Rare 5 Star Review One of the best pizza's in the US. Bold statement? Not really. This is pretty much the epitome of an authentic old school pizza joint. The staff is friendly. The pizza is just ridiculously good! The crust is always thin and a little well done which makes it have a great flavor and a great crispness. Zero soggy slices here! I am good for two slices usually, but I ate four because it was just that good! We had one pep and one plain pie. Price doesn't matter when you are eating at a legendary pizza place with superb pizza. Tip: The meatball wedge is amazing and the greatest rendition of a meatball grinder that we have ever had. If you like the thin crust crispy no flop pizza, then you will thoroughly enjoy this place. The smell of pizza devours the streets. The rumor is you cannot eat this pizza on the street out due to its potency. It causes fights, many have been mugged for the remainder of their pie. That's what you like to hear, if you ask me. But who am I? Anyways - Our lovely and respectful waitress promised me, a young guppy, that the wait would be worth it. What she was really saying is that my 83 year soul, through war and multiple bodies, could wait a bit longer. Her eyes burned of passion, precision, and persuasion. Her confidence clearly knew no bounds. It reassured me in an instance, not that any doubts had really crept in at the moment. Doubts are the friends of the weak and the foe of the stable. I stand on a table. I let my wisdom known - and everyday it's shown. So, yes, really all her majestic and careful words did was elevate my expectations. I suckered down a few zucchini sticks and some house salad as we waited for our turn on the Ferris Wheel. They went quickly. Should've ate more slowly. Rookie mistake, although I was seated with vets. The vets were peering at my every move, it's difficult to eat with Linguini. What is he thinking? Is it positive? Is it negative? Don't think too much, I surely don't. I'm all action. Anyways I heard some complaint about a slightly dirty salad bowl but I couldn't have cared less. I was there for the pizza. Finally. This story is not your typical fantasy. I provided an exposition. I teased you with some rising action. But there will be no fall. No denouement. Strictly a climax. Oh yea... a climax indeed. My tuckered out but tingling teeth chomped down excitedly on a pizza with the structure of the firmest cardboard. The integrity of the dough was so elite, that I argue you could make a bridge from this yeast. A delicious bridge at that. Each bite filled with a crunch. A light crunch, but a crunch nonetheless. This is the best dough in the U S of A. That is clear as day. You can argue with a wall, and the wall would still fight back. Believe me, I would know, I was a rebirthed as a wall from 1943 to 1944. The sauce is fantastic, maybe could use slightly more of it. That's not a complaint or a recommendation. I'm just being picky because that's what you pay me to do. Pay in dollar? Nay. Simply pay me in your love and occasional laughter, all I do is provide transparency. You can't really see the cheese but you know it's there. It's of quality. The crust is scrumptious, it somehow distinguishes itself from the rest of the crunchy slice. The lightness of this pie is feather-like. Not just to hand, but to stomach. With 2 large pies shared amongst three you'd think we'd be squeaking out of the front door, but I think I left lighter. I burned more calories chewing than I gained consuming. I could've polished back so many slices. You have to hold yourself back. These things are addicting. You'd think as the temperature decreases that the pizza quality declines.... But in fact it could've even gotten better. What type of wizardry is that? High 9s pizza. We are talking 9.5/9.6 type. This is a certified BAD BOY. I'm a certified BAD BOY. I was looking for a pizza place to feed my kids, went in an older man was so rude since the moment I went in. That should been my sign to leave. I decided to ignore and go ahead and give a try and ordered pasta with another rude lady named Doris I believe. i could not believe it. I told her she does not need to be rude and have an attitude. She said, " it's been a long night, and I said that's not excuse. I told the valet guy outside because I needed to vent and he also saw what happen through the window. He said she is like that sometimes especially if it's busy. I know now I will return again. and I can't believe with the type of attitude and rudeness, the restaurant is packed. Tried to eat here a couple of weeks ago. I think they were on vacation. Came back from NJ stopped in Arthur ave first picked up items then head out to mt Vernon. Was hoping I can get a parking spot. But no space open. They have about 7 spots for customers. Walked in ordered two pies and 2 Pepsi cans. $50. Pizza was ready in about 15-20 minutes. Pizza dough was good. It reminded me of Italian bread you buy from a bakery. That is how pizza dough should be. Sauce was good. Here is the problem. Not enough cheese. And it wasn't the best cheese. Owner knows about Grande while milk mozz. They should be using the best of the best. Especially when customers are paying a premium and going thru hoops to get there w no parking. Sooooo I've been 4 times now in the last month. I may have a bit of a problem lol It's the best pizza I've had in NY, period. Sauce on top of the cheese. Top notch undercarriage and zero flop. Service was a little slow the first time (it was pretty slammed) it's been perfect the last 3 times there. They have been very sweet and attentive. It's a no frills, old school pizzeria. Go there with good friends and family to enjoy this place. They are thin pies so expect to order a little more for a large crowd. As soon as the doors opened up there was a line of about 40 people. Everyone was seated quickly and within minutes the food was coming out. I had a take out order that was easy from start to finish. The three Pizzaiolo's worked in harmony to masterfully pump pizza after pizza; each a work of art in its own right. Servers efficiently hum through their stations as tending to your every need. If you know me, you know that I think pizza is an overrated food. PUT YOUR KNIVES AWAY!!!! I come in peace. So, while I don't LOVE pizza like, what I like to call people who are, Pizza People, I do sometimes try pizza at different places in the event I find one that I truly love. Well, Johnny's is that place for me. My mom and I got for a large pie: 1/2 plain, 1/2 pepperoni and a side of broccoli sautéed in garlic and oil. The broccoli was decent. It could have been cooked longer for me. I wish it had more garlic since I'm obsessed with garlic. 7/10. Now, the star of the show. The pizza!!! Ok, first look, it looks incredible. The reverse action of cheese then sauce is genius. The undercarriage was nicely charred. When I took a bite I was shook. The sauce was nicely seasoned. It had a level of sweetness that I prefer in my tomato sauces. There was just enough cheese. The crust was my favorite part. I prefer a THIN crust. It was so thin and crispy I was stunned. The sauce being on top allowed the pizza to not have that "flop" or soggy bottom. It was perfect. The pepperoni wasn't salty and thinly sliced. I give the pizza a 10/10. It's such a homey feeling place with the memorabilia that's been collected over the years and now displayed. Some other things to note about the restaurant: -cash only -not open on Sundays and Mondays -looks to get busy quickly when it gets later in the evening so plan accordingly Overall, if you are not a Pizza Person, I still say give it a try! We went to Johnny's on a Friday evening in December after reading about it in a pizza lovers group on Facebook. There was a lot of talk and a lot of hype about this fantastic thin pizza. I will be going through all aspects. Parking. Parking is horrendous. It took over 40 minutes to find a spot. Within that 40 minutes I had to hop out alone to secure a table to attempt to speed up the process. We were pretty hungry already. When my husband finally found a spot he had to walk another 10 minutes to the pizzeria. They have valet but we looked and the lot was full so. Idk it seemed kind of moot. Timeline. From the time that we started looking for parking, to putting in our order, and waiting for the pizza we did spend over an hour before receiving food. What I'm trying to say is that this whole pizza-getting process at Johnny's was very time consuming. It ate up a lot of our Friday night especially by the time we finished eating we prob met the 2.5 hour mark or close. Service. There's no sign but you're supposed to wait in the front to be seated in the order that you arrive. After I gave my name, I waited in a large back room for a few minutes and then was seated at a two-top. Brenda was our waitress. I can't say enough good things about her. In fact she was the best part of our experience. She was kind, sweet, personable and I didn't feel like a number. We connected over our shared interest in diet sodas (lol). She put in my order quickly to get us moving along. Food. We ordered 2 plain pies and two sodas. Was the pizza thin? ...Was it thin? I felt like I was being pranked. I kid you not. They make these pizzas on a piece of printer paper. They make these pizzas on a base of cellophane. They might even make normal pizzas, freeze them, and then shave and serve them. These pizzas are RAZOR THIN. I'm not kidding when I say that after we finished eating I thought about it and said to my husband, if someone wanted to play a practical joke involving pizza, this is the pizza that I would imagine being served. It was comically thin. Practical-joke-thin. New York pizza style is considered thin and I know and understand that. That's what I'm used to and that's what I grew up eating. This is .......its own category. This is something else. If you've never been and you're just looking at the pictures--its even thinner in real life. A feather. Now, that being said, it wasn't "bad." But it was also--a snack. Thank God we ordered two because my husband would have starved to death if we hadn't. I had seven slices but could have had more (something I never say). We both left feeling hungry, $60 later (with tip). I thought it was still tasty but my husband was fuming. After looking forward to it all week as a huge pizza lover, it was such a drastically different experience than he was expecting and he was not impressed. Not enough cheese, not enough flavor, way too thin, no bang for the buck. One side of my husband's pizza also was burnt and he said the crust was inedible on that side. He said he'll never return again and would give it a zero. I'm going to give it a two because of the server and it wasn't "bad" tasting it was pretty good for me in terms of flavor but also not all that it was hyped up to be. Overall-- a let down! read more

I have heard nothing but great things about Johnnny's and today my husband and I finally took the drive to try their pizza. My review is one word, Wow! The pizza was definitely not what I was expecting, but in a good way. If you are thinking you are coming for a traditional NY pizza slice, then think again. Their pizza is very thin and has less cheese than a normal slice. The sauce is very different, but the more you eat it the more you want to keep eating it. It's the type of pizza where you can finish a pie on your own. We also got the house salad, which was also surprisingly delicious. This place has been on my bucket list for a long time. I took a friend of mine who is a senior, who doesn't like any pizza around because it's usually very limp and too Chewy. Well this isn't the case at Johnny's! It's a very old-school restaurant. Nothing fancy just good food. We started off with Johnny signature salad which consisted of pepperoncini, olives, blue cheese, lettuce, onions and tomato. It was nice and cold, crisp in a wonderful vinaigrette. Loved it. Now for the pizza! The pizza came out looking very saucy. It was extremely crispy, and every piece stood upright as you lifted it towards your mouth. The cheese was under the sauce. The slices cannot be described as Chewy or limp. We both agreed the Pizza was really crispy and delicious. My senior friend has finally found her dream come true pizza!
